BVFD Notes We were busy around the BVFD during July. We spent 221 man-hours responding to 42

emergency calls during the month. We responded to 25 EMS calls, 6 River Rescue

Calls, 1 Vehicle Accident and 8 Miscellaneous calls for a Trees Down, a Natural Gas Leak, a

Trash Fire and 3 flood related calls. The members also spent 24 man-hours performing station and vehicle maintenance with their

assigned duty crew. Well I don’t know where the time has gone. By the time you read this article, the summer will be over (for the kids anyway). There will be plenty of warm weather and summer activities

still to come, but the kids will be back in school. So, after the 24th of August, keep an extra eye out for school buses and the speed

limits around the area schools. On a different note the Buffalo Fire Dept. will

be having an Open House on August 29th to celebrate our 145 years of serving the

community. It will be from 1pm to 4pm. We hope you all can stop in and have a piece of cake, something to drink and let us show you the station and you can get a chance to meet

the members. Respectfully submitted by: Terry Adams, Fire Chief

BUCKAROO NEWS One of my favorite parts of our Civil War re-enacting weekends are the Church services held on Sunday mornings at camp. This sparked my curiosity about the role of Christianity in the Civil War and how opposing sides both believed that they were justified by God? Abraham Lincoln knew the Bible thoroughly and spoke often of an Almighty God. However, he was the only United States president never to formally join a church. By 1860, there were nearly 4,000,000 slaves in the United States. (Yet most Confederate soldiers didn’t own any slaves.) The Presbyterians, Methodists, and Baptists—were all divided over slavery or related issues. These church divisions fractured political parties, and ultimately divided the nation.

As early as 1818, Presbyterians unanimously declared that “the voluntary enslaving of one part of the human race by another” is “utterly inconsistent with the law of God.” Ironically, however, they upheld the decision to depose a Presbyterian minister because he

held anti-slavery views. And in 1845, they agreed that slavery was a biblical institution. Before the Civil War, it was rare to find chaplains in American armies. During the war, they earned a lasting place. Sometimes preaching and praying continued 24 hours a day, and chapels, sometimes built in quarters, couldn’t hold the soldiers who wanted to get inside. Millions of tracts were distributed to soldiers during the war. The U.S. Christian Commission alone distributed 30 million tracts, including many through a young agent named Dwight L. Moody. Christians who opposed the war were often persecuted, but were allowed to be exempted from military service if they paid $500, but most suffered for their stance. For example, John Kline, moderator of the Brethren Annual Meeting, became distrusted because he provided medical aid to soldiers from both armies, and in June 1864 he was ambushed and murdered. Blacks were not allowed to serve as chaplains (or soldiers) until 1863. Altogether, 14 black chaplains served U.S. regiments. Abraham Lincoln was also the first President to use the phrase, “This nation under God,” leading to the words “one nation under God” being added to the Pledge of Allegiance. Many Civil War generals stood so committed to observing the Sabbath that it influenced their military operations. Some generals attributed defeats to the fact they had violated the Sabbath by fighting on that day. Many preachers, especially in the North, felt that through the war the final glorious reign of God would begin and that the war would be over in three months. Instead, it lasted four years, with 600,000 soldiers dead from bullets and disease. More Americans died in the Civil War than died in all other American wars combined. News from Echo Bluff

Ranch BUFFALO IA

The acorns and walnuts have begun to fall.

There are pumpkins on the vine. Burrs are clinging to the long hair on the dogs and horses! Summer is winding down. I have so many projects I dreamed of doing this past winter, waiting for the weather to get better. My list grows longer everyday, as new things get added and the existing ones never come off. Two of the things on my list are to ride my horses and paint the sheds and fence. I haven’t done either. It’s not like I am not doing anything. Things that get in the way of our projects are the same for everyone, I am sure: time, money and energy! My other obsession, my dogs, takes up a good portion of those resources. The job I go to to pay the bills is especially draining these days, and it is not what I want to be when I grow up! If I were to win the lottery, not much about my life would change, but many other’s lives would change☺ Get out there and enjoy each day! We LOVE our life on this little Buffalo farm☺Thanks, Chris and Steve Thornton www.echobluffranch.com, or visit us on FB.

. BUFFALO TRIVIA QUESTION OF THE MONTH:

What year was the old school at 4th and Washington built? ANSWER TO LAST MONTH’S TRIVIA QUESTION

Mr. H. Baker was the barber in 1881 in Buffalo and it was written that he gave a clean shave and a good cut!

THE BASICS OF CANNING (although I have never personally tried it☺)

There are basically 5 things you will need and that's ALL. 1) Canning jars.

2) New lids with rings that fit the size jars you have. 3) A large pot (that you can fill with water up to the neck of a quart canning jar) 4) Jar lifter

5) Jar funnel to fit a regular jar mouth (it will also fit a wide mouth).

That’s all I know….. I suggest you look online or a good cook book for some recipes (or talk to Jan Carson)!
