been- ^' orn to a side ofNew York Gov. Nelson Rocke-feller for a good many years,is about to be appointed byPresident Nixon to a high hon-orary - post, ^ Buckley will be.made a member of the UnitedStates Information Agency'sAdvisory Commission. The Commission is one of

the most prestigious in Wash-ington, and has a direct bear-ing on American imageabroad.

Its members Include, aschairman, Dr. Frank Stanton, president of Columbia Broad-casting Co.; Palmer Hoyt, edi-tor and publisher of the Den-ver Post; Thomas Van H. Vail, editor of the Cleveland PlainDealer; Morris Novik, radioand television advisor to theAFL-CIO and founder of theUniversity, of the Air; and Sig-urd Larmon, Sigurd'Larmon, whom Buckley will replace, isa distinguished Republicanwho has served on the Advi-sory Commission for 15 years.

Buckley, who ran as a Con-servative for Mayor of NewYork against the present Re-publican Mayor, John Lindsay, has been the chief organizerof the Conservative Party inNew York State, and has man-aged to take a sizeable shareof the Republican vote awayfront Gov. Rockefeller;s organ-izatio n.

protested a recent column list-ing the amounts they receivedfrom United CongressionalAppeal, a Nazi front Con-gressmen claim they had noway of knowing that any naziism was involved in the moneythey received. However, hereare the facts:United Congressional Ap-

peal was organized by WillisCarto, the mastermind behindthe Nazi movement in' America, who has declared that hisgoal is to "capture" politicalpower.Through United Congres-

sional Appeal he,handed out$90,000 last year to the con-servative Congressional candi-dates and governors whom welisted. We have pointed out that

the candidates who acceptedthis money were by no meansNazis, but were careless zn,notchecking into who was behindtheir contributors.

If they had looked at thesignature on the checks theywould have seen Cartq's name.As early as October, 1966, wepublished correspondencefrom Carto praising Adolf Hit-le

fgat of ,Europe and of Amer-ica,'; Caro wrote in one letter."How could we have been soblind? The blame, it seems, must be laid at the door of theinternational Jews.

"If- Satan himself, with all.his superhuman genius anddiabolical ingenuity, had triedto -create a permanent disinte-gration and force for the de-struction of the nations, hecould have done no betterthan to invent the Jews."On two occasions, the Lib-

erty Lobby, which , Cartofounded, sued this column, once for libel and once forpublishing the above letter to-gether with other correspond-ence. The libel suit involvedCurtis Dall, president of theLiberty Lobby. The suit for in-vasion of privacy was basedupon the grounds that we hadno might to publish Carto's orLiberty Lobby's correspond-ence.-We won both suits, Includ-

ing. appeals to the U.S.. Courtof Appeals. The SupremeCourt refused to -reverse,the,lower courts.

Wise Conservatives °It also had been widely pub-I

fished that Carto controlled, led the spitting and shovingthe Liberty Lobby. Any candi-date could have learned by asimple phone call that UnitedCongressional Appeal was op-erating out of Liberty Lobby's

sheadquarters.The danger in the contribu-

Etions to Congressmen lies in

,the fact that Carlo has alwaysisought to hide behind legiti-

;mate conservatives. He tried

to recruit such a board of con-

servative"s for United Congre-ssional Appeal. Several con-servatives, however, were wisearid refused to have anythingto do with his fund-raising,drive.Among those who refused to

let him use their names wereOhio Rep. John Ashbrook, Wil-liam Buckley, Goldwater's pol-itical manager DenisonKutehel, broadcaster FultonLewis III, Young Americansfor Freedom leader J. AlanMackay, Adm., Ben Moreell(Ret.)' of Jones-Laughlin Steeland Human Events editor TomWinter.

Those who permitted Carteto use their names includedformer Rep. Bruce Alger, who

crowd against Lyndon `and

Lady Bird Johnson in Dallas

in 1960 ; Richard Cotten, a

right-wing fanatic die-hard;

Curtis Dall; and Tom Ander-

son, a member of the John

Birch Society's national board. All have been associated withLiberty Lobby.

This information was availa.ble to the candidates whocashed the Carto-signedchecks from United Congres-sional Appeal. Yet a few recip-ients still defiantly declarethat they would accept contri-butions from this Nazi frontagain.

"I welcome contributionsfrom such distinguished Amer-scans," said Rep. Jim Haley, ahard-nose Florida Democratand former manager of Ring-ling Brothers circus. "I hopethe next time I run they sendme another $1000."

"I find them to be conserva-tive Americans who have longbeen devoted to freedom andthe preservation of our Consti-tution," said Sen. Ed. Gurney,a Florida Republican who gota $2500 check signed by Carte.

When he took over as conductor inchief of the Houston Symphony in1967, Composer-Pianist Andre Prev'joyfully exclaimed: "At last I•am doiiexactly what I want to do!" Now liecan look for something else that hewants to do. Orchestra President Mau-rice Hirsch• abruptly announced last^ee that Previn's contract will not be

Hewed. Hirsch indicated that the or-chestra's sponsors were disgruntled overPrevin's outside commitments, notablyhis romance with the London SymphonyOrchestra. Another problem seems tohave been Previn's mod, madcap ways. His romps in blue jeans through thecity's nightspots with Mia Farrow havebeen amply recorded by local gossip col-,umnfsts. For his part, Previn is out-raged. "The town is musically wide-open for new things," he said, "but theorchestra is run by the most conservativegroup of people I've ever seen, even incartoons."

A small but rabid band of Welsh na-tionalists has been sounding off angrilyever since the announcement that Brit-ain's Prince Charles would be formallynamed Prince of Wales this July 1. Butthe protests all seemed more bark thanbite. Now nine Welshmen are on trialfor organizing a paramilitary outfitcalled the Free Wales Army, and lastweek the court was told of a documentfound in the home of one defendant de-tailing plans to murder young Charles"if necessary" to prevent his investitureat-Caernarvon Castle. Unmoved, Charlesmaintained his royal composure andwent about his studies of Welsh lan-guage and history at the University Col-lege of Wales.

At 74, he is four years past theusual mandatory retirement age for.-fed-eral employees. But last week, as he cel-ebrated his 45th anniversary in,the samejob, FBI Chief J. Edgar Hoover al-lowed that he has "many plans and as-pirations for the future. None of them,"said Hoover pointedly, "include retire-ment. As long as God grants me thehealth and stamina to continue, I haveno- ambition other than to remain inmy post as.director of the Ft31."

It has to be the most bizarre writer-v.-writer confrontation since WestbrookPegler took on Drew Pearson. Chargingthat Gore Vidal waged "a campaign of

The iriimense tarpaulin dropped and100 doves soared into the sky as JacquesLipchifz's latest sculpture, Peace onEarth, was unveiled tit the Music Cen-ter in Los Angeles. Donated by Phi-lanthropists Lawrence Deutsch andLloyd Rigler, and valued at $250,000,the 29-ft.-high, 10-ton design gives el-oquent testimony to the career of the 77-year-old sculptor. Lipchitz spent threeyears on the project, laboring in his stu-dio in central Italy. His efforts were in-terrupted by the Florentine floods of

Student dissent has infected even thesecond-graders at Beauvoir School ofthe National Cathedral in Washington-or so says Senator Ted Kennedy. The morning after a stormy homeworksession with seven-year-old Ted Jr., hefound the following note outside his bed-room door. "You are not ascing me qes-tungs abouat the 5 pages. You are notcreting my home work, it is a freewrold." Said Ted Sr.: "I called for thecampus police."

As escort for her first official WhiteHouse party, a masked ball, Tricia Nix-on chose the capital's newest Congress-man and most eligible bachelor, BarryGoldwater Jr. Blessed with his father'sstrong-jawed good looks, young Barryis nothing if not a romantic figure, andhe and Tricia made a handsome coupleas they danced to the beat of the Tur-tles and the Temptations. Republicanmatchmakers immediately started buzz-ing about yet another White House wed-ding. But their concern seems apremature ; after all , it was only Trfciaand Barry's first date.

•There are some who might be im-pressed by Tittenhurst Park, a 72- acre es-tate 26 miles west of London , completewith a rambling Georgian mansion, Tu-dor, tea pavilion, tennis court, heatedswimming pool, gate lodge and fourstaff cottages. There are also those whoare unaffected by such trappings. Amon;them are Tittenhurst's new owners: Beat-le John Lennon and his Japanese bride,
