It’s a new day and I am certain 2013 will be an incredible year for The Conservatory family. We have profound and diverse programming planned that will no doubt challenge and motivate our students and faculty, and inspire all of our audiences. I want to thank my teammates (board, staff and mentors) for their commitment to our students; the CSC families for their devotion and support; and our community for embracing all that we are and do. I am grateful for each day that I have the privilege to be a part of this astonishing and magical place.

The Colorado Springs Conservatory has received accreditation from the following distinguished organizations:

Exciting movement is taking place all around The Colorado Springs Conservatory! Many talented people are investing their time, attention, and resources into the magic that is The Conservatory! John Ruskin once said, “When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece!” That is what we find at The Conservatory…people who love music and performing, matched with skills that then create an incredible masterpiece. The Conservatory is a regional and statewide gem that we can experience right here in our very own backyard. What a true blessing!

About Maestro Lawrence Leighton Smith Conductor, pianist and composer Lawrence Leighton Smith is known locally for his decade as music director of the Colorado Springs Symphony and its successor, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Prior to arriving here, he was music director of orchestras in Louisville (with which he recorded extensively), Austin, Oregon and San Antonio. Smith was the first American conductor to record with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Other positions include assistant conductor of the Metropolitan Opera and head of Yale University’s conducting program.

Smith has worked with many of the word’s finest musicians, including conductor/composer Leonard Bernstein, violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman and pianist Van Cliburn.

About Mark ArnestComposer and pianist Mark Arnest first met Lawrence Leighton Smith on a phone interview, when Smith was a finalist for the position of Colorado Springs Symphony music director and Mark was arts writer for the Colorado Springs Gazette. He is currently music director at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, and teaches at the Colorado Springs Conservatory. Mark and his wife Lauren have written a dozen plays, a musical, and an opera-and-a-half.

About Beethoven Symphony No. 3Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 - called the “Eroica” - was a turning point not just in Beethoven’s career, but in music history. When composed in 1804, it was the largest and most ambitious symphony ever written, in both its expressive range and intensity, and its musical language. The symphony’s boldness, originality, and energy still shine through after more than two centuries.

Thomas Dawson – Keyboards Thomas Dawson auditioned to play keyboards with The Commodores in 1988 and has held that chair for over 20 years. “It was amazing. notes from the director

Need Photo of Allyson

Never underestimate the ingenuity of young artists on a mission. On the first day of this semester, the Senior COMPANY students found a stack of Samuel Beckett’s most cryptic work waiting for them…short plays filled with difficult themes, broken language, and ambiguous characters. “Now,” instructed their faculty mentors, “take these plays and make art!” Like most of Beckett’s work, the pieces explore the absurd and tragicomic elements of humanity: betrayal, corruption, disease, and fear; characters fighting against the invisible wind, plodding on through the same destructive routines, and marching towards an appalling ending as if they had no power to change the outcome. These are difficult themes for anyone to digest, but our students reveled in the challenge, spending an entire semester in composition, collaboration, and creation.

Some of the pieces you will see tonight are entirely Beckett -- word for word, action for action, exactly as Beckett wanted it. Others are student-created pieces inspired by his work, but re-imagined to reflect the students’ own perspective on the absurdity of their world. And finally, as the great playwright did not leave behind a score for his pieces requiring music, a few of this evening’s pieces are a collaboration between Beckett’s words and the students’ own compositions. Each of the pieces, however, has one common element -- the bravery and ingenuity of this exceptional group of gifted young artists.

About Ormao Dance CompanyOrmao Senior Repertory and Ormao Junior Repertory dancers are selected from annual auditions. They experience professional training from Ormao Dance Company members, with an eye on solid technique who challenge dancers in a positive, encouraging style to grow and improve at their own personal pace. Their repertory covers a diverse dance language experience with choreography in modern, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, musical theater, and anything in-between with a variety of different choreographers. All performance opportunities are non-competitive, community oriented events. Upon graduation, dancers are well prepared for advanced study in higher education at any college or university. For more information, contact Ormao Dance School at 719-471-9759. www.ormaodance.org

Ballet Society“For the past five years, Beautiful Chaos has been an important part of our dancers training and growth as young artists. This unique opportunity for students to explore their art at every level from collaboration, music selection, choreography, costuming, and rehearsals; to promotion, advertising and ticket sales; gives them first hand insight into so many elements of performing. We are pleased that our students have been able to produce a quality annual concert that the community looks forward to each year.” Patricia Hoffman, Ballet Society Founder and Director

Revolution“Revolution Dance Academy students are inspired and exhilarated from the experience of Beautiful Chaos. The process of choreographing and ultimately performing their creation live with the musician/vocalist is an incredible performance opportunity. Beautiful Chaos provides a fantastic outlet for the dancers to share their passion with the musicians and vocalists and tap into their own creativity in a wonderfully rewarding event. You could feel the mutual respect they had for each other as fellow artists and the talent was exceptional. Our dancers really enjoyed the process and meeting the other dancers, musicians, and singers- and Linda Weise! Thank you for the experience and the opportunity to be a part of Beautiful Chaos!” -

Comedy

Director’s Notes (Allyson):

The opening number of Alice in Wonderland, Jr, asks the question “How do you get to Wonderland?” Let me assure you, it is no easy task! The production you are about to see is the culmination of an entire semester’s preparation involving students and instructors from the Novice, Apprentice, Pre-Company and Junior Company classes at CSC. That’s 53 students, 8 instructors, 26 characters, 150 costumes, dozens of parent volunteers and countless hours of rehearsal to bring all of these elements together! Full of zany characters and memorable music, Alice is the perfect vehicle for such an ambitious endeavor. We sincerely hope that you find yourself smiling, laughing, and maybe even singing along as you journey with us through Wonderland!

Thank-yous:The production staff would like to thank the CSC staff, faculty voice teachers & coaches, and most importantly our wonderful CSC parents for all of their assistance bringing this project to the stage!
