CHOIR NOTES Beginning in February we are singing at a nursing home one Wednesday of each month. On February 5 we went to Heritage Health Care and sang hymns for 40 minutes. The reward you get for sharing the music: the smiling face of a lady who was probably a choir director at one time as she knew the words to every hymn and was in the choir director stance with her hands and arms several times. Then there was the man in the grey sweats and jogging shoes who brought himself right up to us in his wheelchair. He was enjoying the hymns so much asking for "one more, one more". He even "led" us one time asking, "are you ready?" and gave us a downswing with his hands. Then there was the twenty something young girl, brought out in a wheelchair snuggling her stuffed animal. When she heard us singing, her enormous smile almost brought tears to our eyes as she enjoyed it so much. And we won't forget the lady who set herself right in the middle of the choir and clutched Sally's hand, saying, "Thank you, Jesus." That's all the reward we need.

LIVING IT UP! Our guest speaker on January 19, 2003 was the Rev. Steve Cain from the Wesley Foundation at Purdue University. Rev. Cain has some Buck Creek connections! He got to know our own Bill Pless when Bill was part of a work team in northeast Brazil where Rev. Cain was a pastor for 8 years. He has also worked with Matt Sharp, Matt Oates and Andy Durbin. It's a privilege to be here! Thank you for being the church that you are. I can sense the power of the spirit here. Abundance is incredible.

We have so much! Spir-it, community, friend-ship, the wholeness of God. So abundant and free. We have life out of abundance. We think we don't have enough, but we have too much! Jesus aid he came so that we would have a full and abundant life. Who's the creator? God! Did God make the earth so people would starve?

No. God is the great creator. Help God to allow His creation to exist so there's not a single hungry child. But men, women, people and sin get in the way of God's creation. I urge you to read the book The Powers That Be by Walter Wink. We know Jesus as our savior and Lord but we don't know His teachings. This book will open those teachings to you. You've heard about taking canaries down into the mines—if there is gas and the canary keels over you know to get out, that things aren't right. A student at Purdue studies salamanders' "love lives". If they are going well, then so is the ecology. In the bible there are 3 groups God always pays attention to. One is the widows and orphans. "how goes it with the widows and orphans?." If they're not being cared for then something is wrong. Second the strangers in your midst—the resident

Bill Pless with Steve Cain.

6

aliens. If they are not being taken care of, then something is wrong. The hospitality to strangers in Brazil is incredible, isn't it Bill? They take the verse very seriously. Strangers are very special and especially favored by Yahweh. Third are the poor and oppressed. In Sodom and Gomorrah was Inhospitality. What was the sin of Sodom? They had it all but they didn't take care of their poor. As a nation we need to pay attention to all three of these. If these 3 are okay, then the Kingdom has come. Jesus knew that you take care of the essential three. When I was canoeing once at the Methodist Camp, a Jack pike jumped into the boat! It was 30 inches long. We took it back to the camp and the cook cooked it up for supper. Creation is that rich and bountiful. Plants, flowers, ask anyone who grows things. It's a paradise we live in. God created it for all. When I went to Hawaii not too long ago, I was out in a 68 foot sailboat. A big whale came by---wow! What a creation God made. The creation is God's and I have a feeling someday he will ask me what did you do with my whales? They're not mine, not yours, they're His. We have to get things right. If we live in harmony with creation the Earth will become new. God's creation is abundant in the world but we mess it up. It's time to get in harmony with God's creation. God help us to live it up in our grace and abundance. We thank you that you have made a home for us. Amen. (Scriptures Galatians 3:28-29, John 10:7-10, were read by Alli Germain.) Rev. Cain encouraged us to check out the Wesley Foundation's website: http://www.wesleyfoundation.org

A MESSAGE FOR MISSIONS! Guest speaker: Kitty Decker Pastor Bonnie first met Mary Katherine "Kitty" Decker in 1995 when Bonnie went to South Bend to be the pastor at her church. Kitty now lives in the Lafayette area. She spoke to the middle school and high school Sunday School classes and during worship service at BCUMC on February 2nd about Operation Classroom and her trip to Africa. I am very pleased to be with you today. Thank you for your generosity for Operation Classroom! You do a wonderful job here with the YES kits! Isn't it wonderful to be involved in this hands on mission? Doing YES kits for Operation Classroom is a long road. You buy the stuff at the store, the material, the supplies. You sew the kits, fill them. Pack them up and take to the warehouse in Lapel. Then they are packed in huge metal containers to be shipped overseas. It's the least expensive way to send them, but it's not very fast. It may take several months for the kits from your church to reach Liberia or Sierra Leone. There is a constant need for the kits and it is an ongoing project. Why

Page 4: BUCK CREEK BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER MARCH 2003 … · Bunch, grandmother Sheryl Dowell, grandfather Bob Dowell, and great grandparents Howard & Judy Skees!) has come. Jesus knew

7

keep making the kits? Because there are always new students. In a country where daily survival is a priority everyday, the children appreciate schooling and education. Do our students (in the USA) really understand the need for education? There are very few discipline problems in Liberia and Sierra Leone schools. The children will carry a chair on their back on their long walk to school so they don't have to set on the floor. Kitty read Matthew 35:25 "For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home." That's what missions are about in the world. In the summer of 1994, my husband Ken was the lay leader at our church in South Bend. He came home and asked me, "Do you want to go to Africa? They are renovating schools and need workers." I was a Home Economics teacher and they were redoing the Home Ec room. I said I wasn't a carpenter or an electrician, but he said they needed people to paint. So I said sure, I would go. It turns out the Home Ec rooms there are no different from the other classrooms! No stoves, kitchens or sewing machines. They have very little electricity in Liberia. When the civil wars came they tore it all out, and the standard of living went down. Our group of 8-9 went for 3 weeks to the College of West Africa. We had a carpenter and a librarian among us. This "college" is really a high school or secondary school. (Your YES kits go to the older children. There is a different kit for younger children which includes crayons and scissors.) Much work needed done on the school as people come in and tear out wood to use for fuel to cook their food. They don't consider it stealing or vandalism, but survival. There were teachers at the school who enjoyed painting the rooms! So we became the clean up crew instead of painters. The African Children and youth will do most anything to make money. They will pull a string across a road and tell you the toll for

Kitty Decker!

8

passage through is 10 cents or 25 cents. Kitty shared seeing very young children under 6 years old on the streets in Monrovia selling hardboiled eggs. A means of support for the child and their family. (Also a source of nutrition to those who purchase the eggs!) She asked us to think how lucky we are that eggs are so easily available and inexpensive to us in the states! Did you know only about 2% of W. Africa high schoolers are able to go on to college? The others need to learn a trade to make a living. Kitty introduced us to a new mission called "Project HANDS": Help Alleviate Needs Distribute Supplies. They will be collecting hand tools, manual typewriters, sewing machines and supplies (pins, needles, thimbles, scissors...) all things to help the people learn skills to make a living. The items do not have to be new. There will be a more specific list and details coming in the next few weeks. It is an effort to re-educate, to get the guns off their backs and give them skills to earn a living and support themselves. (We enjoyed viewing the many items from Africa that Kitty brought with her, including a painted cloth map, a stuffed elephant, carvings of elephants and the African continent, cloth, African figures, and framed black & white drawings.) There is a scholarship program available where your class, group or family can sponsor an Operation Classroom student for $50. The money will pay their tuition for a year. You will receive a photo and bio of the student, and report cards. Write to: Operation Classroom, PO Box 277, Colfax, Ind. 46035, or [email protected].

IN LIKE A LION?

Will March come in like a lion and go out like a lamb, or will these two switch tails? Are we sometimes the lion to someone else's lamb? Or do we find ourselves being the lamb? Wouldn't it be great if they could meet halfway, with the lamb teaching the lion how to be more gentle, and the lion giving strength to the lamb? Mark

the 31 days of your March calendar with the weather "lamb" or "lion" and with whether or not YOU were a lion or a lamb each day. It might look like lamb-lamb, lion-lion, lion-lamb... At the end of March

count up your lions and your lambs, and then read Isaiah 11:6, and 65:25.

A CELEBRATION OF YOUTH! On February 9th, 18 BCUMC youth and their leaders did an outstanding job as they performed five very polished skits for Youth Sunday. A very thought provoking and enjoyable morning. GRAY MATTER > The theme from Jeopardy played as we watched game show host Francis (Kiersten Davidson) welcome players Danny

(Josh Handy) & Halle (Adrian Davidson) to compete in testing their Gray Matter. As the host asks questions, the players write down their answers. What country borders the US on the north? What color is the sky? Who won the NCAA championship in 1989? What year did Napoleon die? Each time Adrian gave the correct answer, but Josh answered incorrectly. However he had such a good defense for all

his wrong answers, he got the points too! [3 John 1:2-4] THE SWITCH > As we hear the music from Happy Days, we see the Mom (Melissa Shepard) setting the breakfast table. Out of nowhere pops Bob Dowell sounding like Rod Serling of Twilight Zone. He tells us a rebellious daughter has been switched with a Christian one. Enters Ali Davidson as the daughter Debbie. Acting very differently than usual. She has dressed like a lady, is using please and thank you. Enters the Father (Zach Doerr). Debbie brings him the newspaper and tells him she has done homework on the weekend. The parents are so surprised as Debbie runs off to school but not before hugging her parents and telling them she loves them. Where is our daughter and who is this! They vote to keep the Christian one. [John 13:34-35]

GO WITH THE FLOW > The theme to Wheel of Fortune theme brings game show host Matt Kojak (Bob Dowell) to center stage.

Today he introduces some celebrity guests: Quentin Gage (Wes Austin) who was attacked by a fanatic fan (Megan Mitchell) on his way to the stage; Candy Carpinski (Casi Davidson), and the Killer from the slice & dice movies (Patrick Balser). Another player is selected from the audience (Alli Germain). Today they are playing for charity. Each player is asked a question and if the other 3 agree, then they win the

money for charity. Alli is asked what would she do if she saw someone hurt and laying by the road. She said she would help them. All the others agree. Then the other players are asked other questions and all agree except Alli. Would she smoke marijuana? No. Play a lead in a steamy movie? No. The others are all angered by her negative response, as now there won't be much money for charity. She responds with "Sometimes in order to do the right thing you have to "go against the flow!" (Alli's charity of choice by the way was BCUMC!) [1 Corinthians 10:12-13] STIR UP THE GIFT WITHIN YOU > We see a receptionist (Megan Mohler) filing her nails as four folks come into her office wanting to see Professor Imaklutz (Patrick Balser). Each has a

gift they want to exchange. Tiffany Faurote (Teacher), Jimmy Stratton (Servant), Travis Germain (Leader), and Amanda Shepard (Giver). She tells them matter of factly to sit in the waiting room and maybe the professor will see them. Enter the Professor in a wheelchair with a broken neck and arm, pushed by his right hand man (Bob Dowell wearing dark sunglasses). In a wonderfully accented voice, the Professor inquires what are they there for? Each tells him they have the wrong gift. He tells them to place their gifts in the big black steaming kettle and stir them up, then to pick out a new one. Each ends up picking out the same gift they put in, but looking at it in a new light. [2 Timothy 1:6-7]

THE DRAMA WITH NO NAME > As the theme from Star Wars played, narrators Megan Mitchell & Allen Church marched down the aisle to the pulpits. Then we see Wes Austin and Patrick Balser enter. A light saber is laying on the floor. Patrick did a cartwheel away from Wes and picked it up. Wes threw down his newspaper to reveal he also has a light saber. A battle ensues. Then our narrators inform us that this has absolutely nothing to do with this sketch! Instead we are to hear "the entire bible, flat out in 10 minutes". As they tell the story, of long, long ago, enter God, who is loving, kind, holy, generous and—PERFECT (played by Megan Mohler). God was lonely, God created people. The people worshiped God. Then the people turned their backs on God and sin entered God's world. (The people took up heavy backpacks with the sign of SIN on them.) God sent signs to the people; then he sent a prophet. Finally God sent His only son into the world (played by Alli Germain). Many followed Him. He was the only person who ever lived that never sinned, but he was

crucified on the cross and took the burdens of our sins away. Some accepted Jesus and walked with Him. Some chose to reject Jesus saying they didn't believe. Others were on the fence, supposing God exists, but not quite getting both legs on that side of the fence. Do you know what it means to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior?

Yes! To live life God's way and do what He tells me! God and sin just don't mix. The Youth ended the morning by having the congregation join them in singing "Celebration!" Pastor Bonnie closed with the benediction. Thanks to the Youth Group members and their leaders (Jim Jr & Anita Davidson, and Steve & Michele Mitchell) for an outstanding performance. Our Youth touched a lot of hearts this morning.

TIME CAPSULE March madness has been around our Buck Creek neighborhood for a long time. Here we share two items in our time capsule. First, this 1929-30 Buck Creek High School basketball schedule which was found written in pencil in the back of the late Donald Eckhart's Literature book. What a treasure to find this long forgotten season's records. Looks like his team had a winning season! Notice how many schools there were then, most close by.

17

And our second treasure is this 60 year old jersey (pictured at left) that belonged to the Editor's late grandfather Charles Schnepp (class of 1944) (pictured at right). He played for Buck Creek HS his junior and senior years.

Also on Charles' team were BC resident Gayland Misner who told me their coach, Arnold Wilson, was drafted at the beginning of their senior year, and the principal became the coach. (Coach Wilson saw a lot of combat and came home from WWII with a medal of honor. He went on to Montmorenci to coach.) Gayland remembers winning the first games of the county tourney and the sectional! The players on the team are shown in the picture below! Renew your spirit and enjoy the March Madness! Note: if anyone has pictures of the 1943-44 team, we'd love to copy it!

MARCH MADNESS REVISITED We asked these former basketball players some questions... Where / when did you play basketball, and what's one of the best (or worst) memories of your basketball days? ANGIE AUSTIN - I played basketball at Harrison in 1978 to 1980. One of the best memories was the night I scored 20 points against CC then the following game was the worst. I broke my ankle when we were playing McCutcheon. RALPH ROHRER - I was a member of the Vernon (IN) Junior High School Raiders in 1964-65 and 1965-66. I sat out much of the 1964-65 season with an injured leg but we won the Jennings county junior high school tourney in 1966. I played in one game with the University of Sussex basketball club in 1973 when I was studying in England one semester. Some friends and I were shooting around in the gym at Sussex. I didn't have my gym shoes so I was playing in my socks. We got into a pickup game. Before the game was over, I was leaving bloody footprints on the gym floor from burst blisters. After my feet healed, I joined the basketball club very near the end of their season. My friend Kevin, who had been a starter for Crawfordsville HS, was already a starter for the club by then. TOM DAVIDSON - I played basketball at East Tipp and my sophomore year at Harrison 1981. Best Memory: (Harrison) I made a last second shot tying the game and forcing a third overtime. The game went to five overtimes the game was at Benton Central. Worst Memory: Also in high school. We were playing at Logansport and we were down by one point with a few seconds left in the game. I was fouled and sent to the free throw line. Maybe the fans from Logansport were yelling at me but all I heard was my mom's voice screaming "do it like you do at home Tom." Even though embarrassed I made both free throws and we won the game. JIM DAVIDSON JR - East Tipp Jr. High 7-9 grades, Harrison Grade 12 I can't remember who we were playing, but it was a tightly contested game and with seconds to go, with all out hustle and determination I stole the ball.....or did the other team pass it to me by mistake (you know how things get a little fuzzy as time goes by)? Anyway, I went in for a lay up and got fouled. The basket was good and I didn't even realize a foul had been called until I was at the other end of the floor. The free throw was made and we proceeded to win the game. After which I was carried off the floor on my teammates shoulders!
