(This is the 69th in a series ofbiographies of great traditional jazzmusicians.)
By Hal SmithPresident, AFCDJS
Chicago pianist Oro “Tut” Soperonce said, “A Chicago Jazz musicianwill always have to fight to keep a free, wild heart.” For over 60 years, clarinetist Frank Chace fought for thatsame freedom.
Chace was born in Chicago on July22, 1924 — over three years before thefirst classic recordings that would definethe Windy City’s musical style. As ayouth he played flute, but did not staywith the instrument. In 1943, whileattending Yale University, he wasdrafted by the U.S. Army. The Army isoften castigated, justly, for its treatmentof musicians such as Lester Young.Luckily for Frank Chace, his Army hitchyielded a benefit — a posting to NewYork, which resulted in an opportunityto hear Pee Wee Russell at Nick’s.Chace was instantly drawn to Russell’sidiosyncratic sound. He took up clarinetand used Pee Wee Russell’s music as atemplate for his own playing.
His first recordings were made withthe “Cellar Boys” in New York in 1951.The personnel included three musicianswho became lifetime friends of Chace:guitarist Marty Grosz, multi-instrumentalist John Dengler and pianistDick Wellstood. (The great NewOrleans bassist Pops Foster and JellyRoll Morton’s drummer TommyBenford also played on the records).
Later in 1951, Chace played with
Wild Bill Davison at George Wein’sStoryville Club in Boston. Two of theevenings with Davison were recordedand several tracks were issued on theSavoy label.
In 1952, Chace played at the Barrelin St. Louis. The band included anotherlifelong friend, pianist Don Ewell. Liverecordings made at the Barrel indicatethat although Pee Wee Russell was stillhis main inspiration, Chace had alsolistened to Omer Simeon, Johnny Dodds,Frank Teschemacher and DarnellHoward.
After the St. Louis job ended, Chaceestablished permanent residence inChicago. In 1955 he played with theSalty Dogs. He also recorded withpianist Dave Remington for the Jubileelabel and with Natty Dominique’s NewOrleans Hot Six for Windin’ Ball.(Dominique’s group also included the
legendary Baby Dodds and Lil HardinArmstrong). Two years later Chaceplayed a concert in Minneapolis withDoc Evans, later issued on a Soma LP.
One of Frank Chace’s greatestperformances was recorded in 1957,when Marty Grosz organized arecording session for the Riverside label. The record, “Hooray For Bix,” by theHonoris Causa Jazz Band, featuredChace on clarinet and bass sax. Theother sidemen were Carl Halen, cornet;Bud Wilson, trombone; Bob Skiver, tenor sax and clarinet; Tut Soper, piano;Chuck Neilson, bass; and BobSaltmarsh, drums. Bill Priestley, alongtime friend of Bix Beiderbecke, played cornet and guitar on a few tunes.Grosz played guitar, led the band andwrote the arrangements. His charts werebased on the sound of Bud Freeman’sSumma Cum Laude band (which wasalso the inspiration for the band name).Chace is in top form throughout therecord, but his first chorus on “Sorry” isthe crown jewel of the session. Afterthe four-bar introduction by the hornsand string bass, the horns play themelody in tight harmony. Chace floatsabove the ensemble, joyfullydeconstructing the melody in the besttradition of Pee Wee Russell. His use ofextended harmonics and rhythmicsuspension is as close to “free jazz” asone can get in a swing setting. Thisbreathtaking chorus is Chace’s suprememoment and one of the most inspiredsolos in the history of recorded jazz!Continued in the July-August Rambler
