1 Introduction 1.1 Scope This document describes the BTS Power Management feature. It mainly covers the two basic functions provided by the BTS Power Management feature, that is, hierarchical power-off and voltage abnormal protection.

1.2 Intended Audience This document is intended for:

Personnel who need to understand the BTS Power Management feature Personnel who work with Huawei products

1.3 Change History This section provides information on the changes in different document versions.

There are two types of changes, which are defined as follows:

Feature change: refers to the change in the BTS Power Management feature of a specific product version.

Editorial change: refers to the change in wording or the addition of the information that was not described in the earlier version.

Document Issues The document issues are as follows:

01 (2010-02-20)

2 Overview of BTS Power Management BTS Power Management supports hierarchical power-off and voltage abnormal protection. The BTS Power Management feature enhances power management and self-protection of the BTS, thus improving the reliability of the system and prolonging the lifespan of products and the serving time of the system. With this feature, the BTS stability is improved, thus improving the Quality of Service (QoS). In addition, the O&M cost for the BTS is cut, thus indirectly increasing the revenue of operators.

3 Technical Description The BTS hierarchical power-off function takes effect when there is no mains supply available. This function aims at reducing the power consumption of the BTS equipment and thus extends the discharge time of the battery. In addition, the BTS hierarchical power-off function can also prevent over-discharging of the battery.

The BTS hierarchical power-off function also takes effect when the working environment in the BTS cabinet is severe, for example, when the temperature inside the BTS cabinet exceeds the predefined thresholds or when the Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) far exceeds the limits. In such cases, the system automatically shuts down the Power Amplifiers (PAs) for some TRXs to reduce the heat consumption.

Hierarchical power-off

When there is no mains supply available, the BTS hierarchical power-off function is performed to reduce the power consumption and extend the discharge time of the battery. In this case, the system automatically blocks all TRXs, except the BCCH TRX. This is called a soft shutdown. When the capacity of the battery drops to the preset value, the system automatically shuts down all the TRXs to prevent over-discharging of the battery. This is called a hard shutdown. Whether to use automatic power-off is configurable. The hierarchical power-off function especially suits the cascaded BTSs. When the mains power of the upper-level BTS is disconnected and the mains power of the lower-level BTS is normal, this function can be used to prolong the working time of the transmission module of the upper-level BTS to reduce the impact on the lower-level BTS.

Voltage abnormal protection

When the working environment is severe or the temperature regulation unit does not work properly, the TMU shuts down the PAs for some TRXs to reduce the heat consumption if the temperature inside the cabinet exceeds the predefined thresholds. This prevents any negative impact on the system. If the TRX is faulty or the VSWR far exceeds the limits, the TRX is made out-of-service and is shut down. The PA for the TRX is also shut down. This is to minimize the possibility of total damage. Whether to use this function and the related parameters to be used for this function are configurable. In this manner, the flexibility of the system is improved.

4 Engineering Guidelines BSS

Issue 01 (2010-01-20)

4 Engineering Guidelines This chapter provides engineering guidelines regarding the configuration of the BTS Power Management feature.

4.1 Support of Hierarchical Power-off The SET BTSAPMUBP command is executed on the LMT to enable the hierarchical power-off function. Note that the Board Parameter Configuration Enabled parameter must be set to YES(YES) to enable the configuration of other parameters. The Hierarchical Power-off Config. Enabled parameter is set to YES(YES), which indicates that the hierarchical power-off function is enabled. The Load Shutdown Voltage parameter is set to 440, which is the threshold of the battery capacity. When the battery capacity drops to a value smaller than 440, a hard shutdown is performed. Note that the Load Shutdown Voltage parameter is set to 475 when the Power System Type parameter is set to SC48200(SC48200), and that the Load Shutdown Voltage parameter is always set to 4294967295 (equals to the hexadecimal number FFFFFFFF) and cannot be modified when the Power System Type parameter is set to EPS4815(EPS4815). One is advised to set the Load Shutdown Voltage parameter to 440 when the Power System Type parameter is set to values other than SC48200(SC48200) and EPS4815(EPS4815). The Load Shutdown Flag parameter is set to ENABLE(ENABLE), which indicates that the hard shutdown function is validated.

4.2 Support of Voltage Abnormal Protection The SET BTSAPMUBP command is executed on the LMT to enable the voltage abnormal protection function. Note that the Board Parameter Configuration Enabled parameter must be set to YES(YES) to enable the configuration of other parameters. The High Temp Load Power Off parameter is set to YES(YES), which indicates that the PA for the TRX will be shut down when the temperature rises to a high value. The Shutdown Temperature parameter is set to 52, which indicates that the PA for the TRX is shut down only when the temperature inside the cabinet reaches 52°C. The PA is automatically shut down when the VSWR far exceeds the limits or the TRX is faulty. Therefore, the PA shutdown function does not need to be configured for these two cases.

5 Parameters This chapter describes the parameters related to the BTS Power Management feature.

For the description of each parameter, see . For the default value, value ranges, and MML commands of each parameter, see .

Table 5-1Table 5-2

Table 5-1 Parameter description (1)

Parameter Description

Board Parameter Configuration Enabled

Whether to allow the configuration of alarm parameters. The value "YES" indicates that the configuration is allowed, and the value "NO" indicates that the configuration is not allowed. If the parameter is set to "YES", all the other parameters are reset to the default values in this command. In multi-mode scenario, the value of this parameter in one mode must be the same as the value of the corresponding parameter in another mode.

Hierarchical Power-off Config. Enabled

Whether to enable the configuration of power system parameters. In multi-mode scenario, the value of this parameter in one mode must be the same as the value of the corresponding parameter in another mode.

Load Shutdown Voltage Load power-off voltage threshold. If "Load Shutdown Flag" is set to "Enable" and the load voltage is lower than the value of this parameter, the load is automatically powered off. In multi-mode scenario, the value of this parameter in one mode must be the same as the value of the corresponding parameter in another mode.

Low Voltage Shutdown Flag Whether "Shutdown Voltage" is valid. In the multi-mode base station scenario, the value of this parameter in different modes must be the same for the same multi-mode base station.

Temp Of High Temp. Load Power Off

When the temperature of the BTS cabinet is greater than the value of this parameter, the TRX is powered off.

Shutdown Temperature High temperature threshold for triggering power shutdown of the battery. If the power shutdown upon battery high temperature is enabled and the battery temperature is higher than the value of this parameter, the battery is automatically powered off. In multi-mode scenario, the value of this parameter in one mode must be the same as the value of the corresponding parameter in another mode.
