Overview of project

This project aims to develop your understanding of film pre-production and production methods. Throughout this project you will be required to; explore the pre-production requirements for a film; analyse and interpret the meanings created by media language techniques; develop an understanding of genre codes and conventions and explore narrative structures and theory. This knowledge will be key in the development of your own production work in which you will create an idea for a new film; undertake a variety of pre-production planning tasks; and produce a final moving image piece."Production Task: You are required to produce a short moving image sequence. The scene can be from any part of the film but it must be engaging and create tension (3-5mins).

Scenario

“Sundance Institute is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences. Through its programs, the Institute seeks to discover, support, and inspire independent film and theatre artists from the United States and around the world, and to introduce audiences to their new work.” - Sundance mission statement"Obafam studios are looking to develop new talent and enter a film into the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of film language, pre-production and planning processes and film-making skills.

Inspiration for your project

The film industry is one of the most popular forms of contemporary media with many new films being released on a weekly basis. You should draw inspiration from a range of film texts, both historic and contemporary.

ScenarioObafam Studios feel that it is essential that you demonstrate your knowledge of the key concepts; genre, narrative, representation, audience and media language before you produce your film. You should begin by exploring existing film texts, analysing how media language has been used to create meaning and how codes and conventions have been deployed.

1. What is a single camera production? Create an information leaflet that explains the differences between single and multi camera productions. You should use real examples and images in your work."

2. Produce a media language leaflet, ebook or presentation that deconstructs and explains the 4 key areas; mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing and sound. Your work should contain appropriate media terminology and reference to theories and approaches. You should support your work with examples from real media products."

3. Demonstrate and understanding of narrative structures and theories by creating an information sheet that explains the following; linear and non linear approaches, 3 act structure, omniscient and restrictive perspectives."

4. Apply your knowledge of single camera productions and analyse a 3min sequence from a thriller film of your choice. You can choose from the following methods of presentation.A. ScenarioIn order to demonstrate to Obafam’s executive producers that you are able to put together a pre-production documents they, have asked you to put together a portfolio for BBC Films’ An Education (2009); due to its similar production circumstances. This task enables you demonstrate an understanding of the preproduction requirements of a feature film.

1. You are required to produce a 1500 word pre-production exploration of the film An Education (2009). Your work needs to be able to explain the requirement for the production and contain detailed information on the following:"1. Type of production (film)2. Source material3. Talent (Experience and contacts)4. Finance, production and distribution (sources, budget and production requirements, e.g. equipment,

travel and crew)5. Filming locations and permissions - choose three locations to investigate, including one studio.
