NORTHUMBRIAINDUCTION

The Newcastle Business School, NU, was awarded a full five-year Business Accreditation by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). Being the hallmark of excellence in business education, only 711 business schools maintain AACSB accreditation from 15,700 institutions worldwide.

Northumbria University representatives visited Bangkok School of Management (BSM) from June 4th-6th for their annual new cohort induction. The sessions were carried out by Dr. Guy Brown, Head of Department for the Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University, and Ms. Claire Hoy, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader.Currently, there are only two support centres for Northumbria University in the world, one of which is Bangkok School of Management. NU representatives visit the two support centres one to two times a year to help new students get acquainted with the year ahead in their studies. The visit also serves to provide students with actual face to face contact, to ease communication once they return to the UK. Students currently undergoing the programme also have the opportunity to meet one to one with Dr. Guy and Ms. Claire to discuss their progress, receive feedback, as well gain support and ideas for future assignments. The visit concluded with a tapas social and speeches at the Galleria 10 Leapfrog Bar & Grill.

We look forward to their next visit in November!

THE SCOOP

The World Cup is getting more heated than ever! Football lovers from all over the world are looking forward to their team matches every single day. Hence, Brazil has become the most desired destination at this time. The World Cup 2014, from the perspective of global fans, is a tournament full of excitement. However, in an economist’s point of view, this big opportunity has challenged Brazil economically and socially.

On October 30 2007, Brazil was chosen to be the host of the World Cup 2014. With this selection, Brazil is the fifth country to hold this tournament twice, after Mexico, Italy, France and Germany.

So how does a country such as Brazil prepare for the World Cup?

THE BUSINESS OF FOOTBALLBehind the celebration of “We Are One (Ole Ola)”By: Ngoc Pham (Gem), Student Intern @ BSM

This map presents 12 cities, where football matches are staged.

Stadiums:The 64 matches of the tournament are taking place at 12 stadiums across Brazil. Initially, the cost of building these stadiums in 12 cities was stated to be $1.1 billion US.

Infrastructure:Transportation needed to be upgraded in order to serve the high demand during World Cup season. As 600,000 tourists will be travelling by plane to Brazil in addition to three million passengers to be transported between matches, air transportation

is a major point of focus. Thirteen terminals were required to be improved prior to kick off. Besides air transport, on the to-do list for Brazil included construction of road systems, light rail, and bus rapid transit lines. These were required to transport fans from airports to the city and stadiums.

Security:Additionally, $900 million US has been spent on security measures. It is said that there is one police officer for every 50 people in the audience attending matches and one for every 80 tourists at public viewings.

This list only reveals estimated numbers, which Brazil is responsible to bear for the World Cup 2014. We have not yet mentioned about the accommodation network, tourist services and so on.

Consequently, there have been controversies about Brazil even being the host of the tournament. Since the FIFA’s appointment, protestors across Brazil have hung up banners saying “We don’t need the World Cup”, “We need money for food and education”. According to many Brazilian citizens, the money used for World Cup has been rather wasteful; the government should have spent that amount on societal improvement.

Despite having rapid economic development, Brazil still faces high rates of poverty, lack of education, and large gaps between the rich and the poor. There is an estimated capital of $3.6 billion US that has been used on stadium work so far (and just for the stadium construction). Regardless, the World Cup has already begun and things are going well thus far. With all the emotions and struggles to prepare for the tournament, at least the tourism industry is getting a boost. Politics aside, Brazil can still smile and enjoy their win against Chile.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO COMPETE IN MISS THAILAND UNIVERSE 2013?I was initially a little nervous about my Thai language abilities, but throughout the competition I have become much more confident. Overall it was a very interesting experience and a lot of fun. We spend three weeks doing various activities with the Miss Universe Thailand Organization such as visiting organizations, and taking acting & singing classes. We even had a swimming class!

WHAT HAVE YOU GAINED FROM THE COMPETITION?This is the best experience I have ever had. In a way I feel more like a woman and officially a grown-up. I have become more feminine, responsible, and patient. We were required wake up at 3 am to start doing hair & make up for a 6 am activity and then continue through the day until 11 pm. I have also changed my way of thinking and have matured ever since I have been given the responsibility to represent Thailand as a beautiful country to locals, as well as foreigners. I am now more open to meeting new people.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE NOW?Currently, I am training with the current Miss Universe Thailand to prepare to represent Thailand in another international contest this year. We are not sure which one or

destination but I am excited nonetheless. The Miss Universe Thailand Organization has trained us (and is still training us) to become the face of women in Thailand. We are required to have a certain image and present ourselves in a way that puts Thailand in a good light from activities we are involved with, to the way we dress, to even the people we interact with.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?The competition has given us castings for lakorns (Thai soap operas) as well as some model castings. My ultimate goal is to go to Hollywood, perhaps maybe as a model to help get me in the business, but more importantly to establish a career as an actor. In the meantime, I am looking to possibly start playing a role in a lakorn as I believe it helps establish my credibility as an actor, finish my Higher Diploma at Bangkok School of Management, then move to France to jumpstart my international career and complete my Bachelor’s Degree. I hear it’s a beautiful country and I look forward to the possibilities I can gain there.

One year ago, BSM student Wanvisa Maya Goldman participated in the internationally renowned Miss Universe Thailand Pageant 2013. Maya, who also goes by Vanvisa (Jampa) Prapasiri, received the honor of placing third overall in the competition. While she was busy representing Thailand at various events in and around Bangkok, BSM met with Maya to learn a little bit about how her life has changed since the competition. We wish Maya all the best as she continues to represent Thailand domestically and internationally!

ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD?Yes, I would like to thank BSM for being very flexible with my study schedule throughout the competition. My teachers were very helpful and kind when I came to them to negotiate a schedule.

WHERE IS MAYA NOW? (JUNE 2014)Wanvisa Maya Goldman has now completed her Higher Diploma at Bangkok School of Management and is completing her Bachelors Degree at INSEEC Business School, Paris, France.
