Backers Say Drones Will ProveUseful for Farmers

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Interest isgrowing in using unmanned drones to helpmonitor millions of acres of crops.

Drones with infrared cameras and othersensors can help identify insect problemsand watering issues early. They can also helpassess crop yields and locate missing cattle.

The Des Moines Register reports that sup-porters believe using drones on farms makessense because the operations are generallylarge and in rural areas.

The Association for Unmanned VehicleSystems International predicts that 80 per-cent of the commercial use of drones willeventually be in agriculture.

Former Kansas State University professorKevin Price said drones will let farmers mon-itor their crops in ways they never have, andhe expects nearly every farm to start usingthe technology in the next decade.

''It is endless right now, the applications inagriculture,'' said Price, who left the univer-sity this month to join RoboFlight, a Denver-based company that sells drones and ana-lyzes the data collected on corn, soybean andother field crops.

Farmer Brent Johnson spent $30,000 on adrone last year to study how the topographyof his 900-acre central Iowa farm affectsyields.

He said using the drone helps him decidewhether to replant an area or avoid it in thefuture.

''I'm always looking for an advantage, look-ing for how I can do things better,'' Johnsonsaid.

Drones can also help farmers determinehow much pesticide, herbicide or fertilizer toapply to specific areas of their fields.

Drones range in cost from $2,000 for abasic model to roughly $160,000 for a mili-tary-style device.

Some farmers may try to operate their owndrone, like Johnson has done, but most arelikely to hire companies with the expertise tooperate the devices.

Privacy and safety concerns have beenraised about the idea of businesses usingdrones. But agricultural use of the devicescould be more likely to gain acceptance.

Gilbert Landolt has protested the way theU.S. military uses drones as part of the DesMoines chapter of Veterans for Peace, buthe's not opposed to agricultural use as longas it's regulated properly.

''There are good uses for drones, I'm notsaying there's not, but we need to get a han-dle on it,'' Landolt said. ''If they had sometype of control over it and could do it in a wayon a farm that makes sense, I don't have anissue with that.''

Bugs Resistant to GeneticallyModified Corn

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Researchers saybugs are developing resistance to the widelypopular genetically engineered corn plantsthat make their own insecticide, so farmersmay have to make changes.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports thatcases of rootworms eating roots of so-calledBt corn have been confirmed in Nebraska,Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota and Minnesota.

Iowa State University researchers foundthat rootworms have developed resistance totwo of the four genetic traits in corn plantsthat are engineered to kill rootworms. IowaState professor Aaron Gassmann said theproblem isn't widespread yet, but farmersand seed companies should consider chang-ing their approaches to pest control.

''Hopefully, people can learn from thesecases of resistance,'' Gassmann said.

The popular corn variety gets its namefrom the insect-killing bacterium it contains,bacillus thuringiensis, a natural insecticidethat is considered harmless to people andlivestock. The U.S. Department ofAgriculture reports that 76 percent of allcorn planted last year was Bt corn.

When rootworms attack, clumps of cornplants can be leveled by summer stormsbecause they don't have the roots to anchorthem.

In areas where Bt corn has failed to controlrootworms, farmers often turn to insecti-cides.

Researchers believe that rootworms aremore likely to develop resistance to Bt cornwhen farmers plant the same hybrid in afield year after year, said Lance Meinke, anentomologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Most farmers rotate corn with other cropsin a practice long used to curb the spread ofpests, but some abandoned rotation to cashin on corn prices that stayed high for severalyears or because they needed more grain forlivestock.

But even with crop rotation, the beetlesmay be finding a way to thrive. Researchersare investigating reports that some cornrootworms in central Illinois found a wayaround crop rotation by laying eggs in soy-bean fields.

The problem of resistant rootworms couldeasily spread because the larvae grow intoadult beetles that can fly to new areas.

Meinke said farmers should think of Btcorn as just one part of their strategy formanaging rootworms. He said it doesn'tappear likely that seed companies will beable to make significant improvements in thecorn hybrids in the next few years.

''Right now there is nothing on the horizonfor the next four or five years that is going tocome out. So we have to manage rootwormswith what we have,'' Meinke said.
