V. GeneralEducationObjectivesforBiologicalSciences

Biologicalsciencecoursesprovideinstructioninthebasicconcepts,theoriesandtermsofthescientificmethodinthecontextofthelifesciences.Coursesfocusonmajorscientificdevelopmentsandtheirimpactsonsociety,scienceandtheenvironment,andtherelevantprocessesthatgovernbiologicalsystems.Studentswillformulateempiricallytestablehypothesesderivedfromthestudyoflivingthings,applylogicalreasoningskillsthroughscientificcriticismandargument,andapplytechniquesofdiscoveryandcriticalthinkingtoevaluateoutcomesofexperiments.

TheGeneralEducationobjectivesandtheassociatedStudentLearningOutcomesforBiologicalSciencesareachievedthroughlectures,inclassdiscussion,interactive“clicker”responsesystems,andonlineactivitiesandexercises.ThelearningobjectivesandSLOsarefurtherreinforcedbyinquiry-basedandactive-learningexercisesinthecompanionlaboratorycourse,BSC2010L.Inparticular,thecompanionlabexpandsupondevelopmentandtestingofspecifichypotheses.

XII. AssessmentsandGrading

A. ExamsTherewillbethree"midterm" exams,butnocumulative "final"exam.Themidtermexamswillbeadministered duringthenormal semester andduringthenormalclassmeeting times.Eachexamwillcovermaterial fromlecture, theonlinediscussions, andtheassigned reading inthetextbook.Theexamswillnotbecumulative. Eachexamwillbeworthapproximately 28%ofthecoursegrade.

Allexamswillbemultiple---choiceandmachine graded.Answersheetswillbeprovided andmustbefilledinusinga#2orsofterpencil.Eachstudentmusttaketheexamduringher/his registeredsection time.Eachstudentmustbringher/hisGatorIDtoclassonexamdays.Nostudentwillbeallowed tostartanexamafterthefirststudent tocomplete anexamleavestheclassroom.
