    National foreword

    This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Basic Dataand Performance Criteria for Civil Engineering and Building StructuresStandards Committee. It is identical with ISO 6240 Performance standards in

    building Contents and presentation prepared by ISO/TC 59, Buildingconstruction, and published in 1980 by the International Organization forStandardization (ISO).

    Terminology and conventions.The text of the International Standard hasbeen approved as suitable for publication, without deviation, as aBritish Standard. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identicalwith those used in British Standards; attention is especially drawn to thefollowing.

    Wherever the words International Standard appear, in clauses 0, 1and 3,referring to this standard, they should be read as British Standard. Where thewords International Standard appear in 4.4, 4.5.2, 4.6.1and 4.6.2they shouldbe read as International Standard and/or British Standard. Where the words

    International Standard or Guides appear in 4.6they should be read asInternational Standard or Guide and/or British Standard or Guide.

    NOTE Textual error.In line 5 of clause 0, clause 2 should read clause 1.

    A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of acontract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.

    Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunityfrom legal obligations.

    0 Introduction

    This International Standard has a particularly wide

    range of applications within the standards field, aswell as a number of further potential applications tobuilding documents incorporating performancestatements; these are described formally in clause 2below. Its application extends to standards that arewide-ranging in scope covering, for example,groups of products or assemblies ofcomponents as well as to the more customarystandards for specific products. Different kinds ofinformation on performance will be required inthese different levels of standards, and thisInternational Standard is intended to provide abroad, common basis of headings and sequence forarranging this information.

    The scope of the information to be given will alsovary depending on whether the standard beingdrafted

    a) covers all relevant aspects of the performanceof a component or assembly, i.e. forms acomprehensive performance specification orstatement;

    b) is restricted to one or a limited number ofperformance attributes, or

    c) includes both performance requirements andother types of requirement, for example foraspects of material or construction.

    The detailed guidance in this InternationalStandard relates to comprehensive standardswritten in performance terms only [paragraph a)above]. A measure of selection or interpretation willbe required to determine which aspects of theguidance apply to standards of the other types[paragraphs b) and c) above].

    1 Scope and field of application

    This International Standard specifies the basiccontents to be included in performance standards

    for building components and assemblies, andindicates a standard order for their inclusion.

    It is intended primarily for use by standardscommittees preparing performance standards forbuilding components and assemblies.

    It should also be useful for the preparation of othertypes of document, such as:

    a) statements of required performance in buildingregulations and other statutory documents;

    b) statements of required or achievedperformance in guidance documents for buildingdesigners;

    c) statements of required or achievedperformance in contract documents forpurchasing components;

    d) statements of required or achievedperformance in briefs and contract documents for

    the construction of buildings as a whole;e) statements of achieved performance indescriptive documents about manufacturersproducts.

    NOTE A document covering preparation of performancestandards in building has been submitted for testing to thesub-committees and ISO technical committees concerned.

    2 Reference

    When International Standards are being produced,reference should be made to the Directives for theTechnical work of ISO, Part 3:Presentation ofInternational Standards, whose recommendations

    for general layout should also be followed.

    3 Definitions

    For the purposes of this International Standard, thefollowing definitions apply:

    3.1component

    a product manufactured as a distinct unit to serve aspecific function (or functions)

    3.2assembly

    an aggregate of components used together3.3performance

    (the) behaviour (of a product) related to use

    4 Clauses for inclusion in performancestandards

    4.1 Scope

    Give the name of, or otherwise identify, thecomponent or assembly which is the subject of thestandard.

    4.2 Field of application

    Define the intended uses of the standard itself, andof the component or assembly which is its subject.Sufficient indication of any related uses to whichthey are only partially applicable should also begiven in this clause.

    4.3 References

    Refer to the other relevant standards anddocuments regarding applications.

    4.4 Definitions

    Define all specialized terms used in the standard,

    following relevant International Standards.

    4.5 Purpose and context of use

    4.5.1 Describe the role that the component or

    assembly is intended to play in satisfying applicablefunctional requirements, either solely or incombination with other parts of construction.

    4.5.2 Indicate the agents relevant to theperformance of the component or assembly(for example the agents or actions to which it maybe subjected, or which it may generate under theintended service conditions or range of conditions).

    The factors shall be expressed quantitatively, and inaccordance with International Standards on meansof expression, where applicable.

    4.6 Performance requirements

    Performance requirements must be listed for finaluse in the building and, if necessary, for supply,transport, intermediate storage, handling andinstallation, in accordance with any orderrecommended in applicable International Standardor Guides. A distinction may need to be drawnbetween those requirements which always applyand those which apply only in certaincircumstances, according to the purpose andcontext(s) of use stated under 4.5.

    Each performance requirement must bedefined (4.6.1) and then each requirement must

    have specified methods of assessment orverification (4.6.2) and performance values (4.6.3),together with a commentary (4.6.4), if appropriate.

    4.6.1 Definition of performance

    Define each performance requirement in terms of afunction which is to be fulfilled, together with thephysical or chemical property or properties on whichassessment or verification will be based. Use termsand expressions capable of quantification and inaccordance with any applicable InternationalStandards.

    NOTE It may be necessary to define properties that acomponent or assembly shall NOT possess, for exampleunacceptable side-effects.

    4.6.2 Methods of assessment or verification

    For each performance requirement, describe fully or

    cross-refer to:a) the means (measurement, calculation, test ormethod of examination) by which the achievedperformance of the component or assembly will beassessed or verified; and

    b) the means of predicting the performance overtime of the component or assembly.

    Cross-references should be to InternationalStandards where possible.

    4.6.3 Performance values

    For each performance requirement, state upper and

    lower limits to the range of acceptable performancevalues or grades, against which the achievedperformance of any particular component orassembly will be required to be stated.

    Indicate the relationship of the values or grades tothe purpose and context(s) of use stated under 4.5,giving appropriate increments for the selection ofspecific values.

    4.6.4 Commentary

    Give any observations, examples or data that mayassist understanding.

    4.7 Description of achieved performance

    State any requirements for the description (forexample by manufacturers) of the achievedperformance of products complying with thestandard.

    4.8 Applicability to certification

    Give details of the standards applicability tocertification, making reference as necessary toquality control procedures, marking, etc.
