    Foreword

This Part of BS 302 has been prepared under the directionof the Mechanical Handling Standards Committee. It s onePart of a combined revision of BS 302 : 1968, BS 236 : 1968,BS 329 : 1968, BS 330 : 1968, BS 365 : 1968 andBS 3530 : 1968, which are withdrawn. BS 302 is nowpublished in six Parts and takes account of both nationaland international developments since 1968.-This Part (Part 4) specifies requirements for ropes for lif tsadditional to the general requirements in Part 1. Other Partsspecify the additional requirements or other particular usesof ropes:

Part 2 Specification or ropes for general purposesPart 3 Specification for zinc coated ropes for shipsPart 5 Specification or ropes for hauling purposesPart 6 Specification or ropes for mine hoisting

Two further Parts are in preparation, covering larger diameterropes (64 mm to 205 mm diameter) and higher strengthropes and will be Parts 7 and 8 respectively. In line with the principles of international standardI S 0 2408, publishedby the International Organizationfor Standardization (ISO), the constructions are groupedaccording to the number of outer wires in the strands. The general requirements of BS 302 : Part and themethods used for calculating breaking loads and approxi-mate masses comply wi th IS 2408. In respect of individualusages the ropes in Parts 2 and 3 are fu lly in accordancewith I S 0 2408 and those in section two o f Part 4 are inaccordance with IS 4344. In each of these Parts however, certain additional ropes s t i l l in common use i n the UK havebeen included. In line with current international practice, the term 'zinccoated' has been adopted in this standard in place of'galvanized'. The terms are synonymous.Purchasers ordering to BS 302 are advised to specify intheir purchasing contract that the manufacturer operate aquality system in compliance with the appropriate Part ofBS 5750, or suitable equivalent, to ensure themselves thatproducts claimed to comply with BS 302 consistentlyachieve the required level of quality.Wire rope users will find valuable information in thecompanion publication BS 6570 'Code of practice for theselection, care and maintenance of steel wire ropes'.Compliance with a British Standard does not of i tsel fconfer immunity from legal obligations.

    Section one. General

1 ScopeThis Part of BS 302, which consists of three sections, specifies the requirements for single and dual tensile steelwire ropes for lifts and i s for use in conjunction withBS 302 : Part 1.Section two applies to suspension and ancillary ropes forelectric lifts which:

    (a) are new;(b) have been modified to use 1370/1770 grade dualtensile rope; or(c) are capable of using 1370/1770 grade dual tensilerope.

NOTE 1. Section two i s generally aligned with I S 0 4344 except thatthe 1770grade single tensile ropes which are not used in the UK arenot included. It also aligns wi th and i s complementary to BS 5655 :Part 1 which is the English language edition of EN 81 : Part 1.Section three applies to suspension and ancilliary ropes forexisting electric li fts that require replacement of 1180/1770grade ropes and are not capable of accepting the ropesspecified in section two with higher tensile outer wires.NOTE 2. The ropes in section three were previously specif ied inBS 329, and include some non-preferred sizes.NOTE 3. Information to be given by the purchaser on the enquiryand order is given in appendix F of BS 302 : Part 1 : 1987.NOTE 4. Recommendations or the handling, use and care of steelwire ropes for electric lifts are given in appendix A.NOTE 5. Appendix A. Recommendations orhandling use and care of steel wire ropesfor electric liftsA. l StorageThe wrappings of a rope should be removed immediatelyafter delivery and the rope examined.Ropes should be stored in a cool, dry building whosetemperature i s kept reasonably constant to preventcondensation, and should not be in contact with the floor.Ropes should never be stored where they are liable to beaffected by acid fumes, steam or other corrosive influences.Rope in store should be examined periodically.A.2 Uncoiling and handlingRopes should be paid out from a reel or coil and, to preventthe possibility of kinking or disturbance to the lay, shouldbe paid out without slack and in a straight line. A coil ofrope should preferably be paid out from a turntable. A reelof rope should be set up with a spindle supported on jacks.A rope should never be unwound by throwing off turnswith the coil or reel flat on the ground.Langs lay rope is more liable to deform than ordinary lay,and will give satisfactory service only if handled with duecare.A 3 End fittingsAll rope terminations should comply with the appropriateBritish Standard*. They should be strictly compatible wi ththe wire rope, correctly fitted, tested and certified whereapplicable.

    .e . BS 462, BS 463 or BS 464.

    8

A.4 Hand splicingA thimble or loop splice made in the wire rope should havea t east three tucks with a whole strand of the rope, and twotucks with one half of the wires cut out of each strandmade under and over, against the lay of the rope. The spliceshould be tightly drawn and neatly made.A 5 Ferrule secured eye terminationsFerrule secured eye terminations fi tted to wire ropes shouldbe in accordance wi th BS 5281.A.6 InstallationIt i s recommended that al l the ropes of any one liftinstallation should be taken from one rope-making(production length).Prior to installation of a new rope, grooves of drumssheaves and pulleys should be examined to ensure that theprofile i s correct for the size and type of rope to be fitted.Where necessary worn grooves should be machined to thecorrect profile. A new rope installed on to a worn sheavewi ll suffer damage which could greatly reduce i t s service life.Care should be taken when installinga rope to preventunlaying of the rope due to rotation o f the free end. This i sparticularly important with Langs lay ropes.Servings should not be removed without ensuring that thelay of the rope wil l be held.Care should be taken when installing multiple ropes toensure tensions are equal, and provision should be made forany necessary length adjustment. After installation ropes should be checked for lengths andtensions.A.7 MaintenanceMaintenance should comprise regular inspections andcleaning, with records kept of any adjustments carried out,any defects noted, or any other incident relative to ropeperformance. The inspection should always include any endfittings, with emphasisa t the point of entry.
