School Absence Notification:
https://beps.vic.edu.au/absent/
Hi everyone,
Well I feel that this week has really been the start of term. We had a large number of
students and parents extend their first term break and take advantage of the public
holidays. I completely understand that it was a fantastic opportunity to take 3 days
annual leave and get an extra 7 days of break. However, if your child is away for any
reason please let us know via the school website
(https://www.beps.vic.edu.au/absent/ ). This also applies to sickness. Unfortunately the
office staff have spent a lot of time ringing parents over the last week and today.
Please let me remind you why we need to know:
1 Legal requirement that we know where students are
2 Students are supposed to be at school unless sick or with permission to be
absent
3 The most important one: we care and want to know if you or your child are
having a problem attending school that we can help with.
We can improve as a school community here.
Toilets update:
Even with the public holidays the builders have been on the job and are making
fantastic progress. Photos below.

You will see further in this newsletter a fantastic poster for our first “Acknowledgement
Day”. We will be holding 2 of these days each year; one to coincide with the
‘traditional’ Mother’s Day and the other to coincide with the ‘traditional’ Father’s Day.
There has been a lot of discussion about the reason we celebrate these days and the
naming of the celebration. I believe that days like this are important because we do
need to stop and show gratitude for those around us. The adults who care for us are
important and it is important that we as a school, help students to think of others and
not just themselves. However, it is also very important that we make these occasions
as inclusive as possible. I have spoken to a range of parents, about ½ the students in
the school and we have discussed this issue extensively at School Council. The
combined outcome from these discussions is that we have decided to call the
traditional “Mother’s and Father’s Day Stalls” Acknowledgement Stalls for
Mother’s/Father’s, Parents and Carers. I sincerely hope that this change in name will
show that we as a community recognise that our Families are not made up of any
particular combination of people and that we no longer subscribe to a binary world. I
am sorry that in the past we have offended some members of our community and I
hope that this acknowledgement goes some way to address any hurt which has
occurred in the past.
Please support this wonderful community and fundraising event. The organisers need
volunteers for the baking and manning the Stall. Can you help out? Please see the
posters further on.
Premiers’ Reading Challenge:
In an attempt to continue to encourage students’ reading we will participate in the
Premiers’ Reading Challenge again this year.
1 ). All BEPS students have been registered for this challenge, thanks to Kerri. Year 4, 5
and 6 students will be encouraged to keep a list of the books that they have read and
record them for themselves. I ask that parents help younger students to record their
books. All students will be provided with their passwords – this week, I think. Anyway
some great reads and if you have a favourite that you think I should read, then please
let me know and I will try to read it.
Dates to remember:
1 Grade 6 transition notes go out this week
2 NAPLAN – 14th, 15th & 16th May
3 Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday – Monday 10th June
4 Curriculum Day – student free – Tuesday 11th June
5 3-way conferences – Thursday 20th June, Monday and Wednesday 24th and
26th June
6 Last day of term Friday 28th June – early finish 2:30pm. That’s it! The term has
