John Moses Browning

Browning

John Moses Browning was bornon 23 January 1855, in Ogden,35 miles north of Salt Lake City(Utah, USA), between the GreatSalt Lake and the Wasatch-CacheNational Forest.

Gun-making ran in the familyof the young John Moses, as hisfather was a gunsmith who hadalready been responsible for anumber of innovations in theeld. As a young boy, he spenttime in his fathers workshop,and knew the name of every partof a gun before he could read.

From the age of 6, he madeshing accessories from scraps

of metal which he hammeredinto shape on a child-sized workbench made from a woodencrate. His 19th-Century Ameri-can boyhood abounds with anec-dotes, all of which point towardshim becoming an internationallyrenowned genius inventor.

It didnt take long for those whohad observed his creative traits tomake up their minds: at the age

of just 23, Johna Moses lodgedhis rst patent, for the J.M.Browning Single Shot Rie. Thisinvention simplied the percussionmechanism, making it moredurable and reliable.

Shortly before his death, his fatherhanded over his business to JohnMoses. With his brother Matt, evenwith less than one thousand dollarsin the bank and no experience ofmachine-tool operation, youngBrowning transformed the humblestore into a small gun makingworkshop with seven employees.

The remoteness of their store, thelow number of ready customers,and the lack of capital meant thatthe business struggled to surviveuntil luck intervened to makethe inventors talents known to aconnoisseur: a representative fromWinchester.

In another state in the US, thisrepresentative had come acrossa gun made by the Browningbrothers. Firmly convinced of theinterest of their conception, hebought it from its owner and sentit to his superiors in the companys

head ofce. So impressed werethey that the managing director ofWinchester himself set out straight

away on a six-day journey to what,at that time, was still the Wild West- the real Wild West, to meet theBrowning brothers.

Despite his astonishment at ndingtwo young men in their twentiesin a rustic workshop, the manwas perceptive enough not to befooled by appearances and signedcommercial deals with them assoon as he could. The decisionwas a wise one: these agreementswould last for several decades.

Browning had a future. Over theyears, Browning granted licenses toseveral manufacturers for dozensof inventions and rearms. Heinvented almost everything in theeld of rearms. The creativity andlevel of perfection of his inventionswere so signicant that the vastmajority of his technologicalinnovations could not be improvedupon or replaced for several years.

The world of rearms is like theart world: the success of creatorsdepends on the interest of well-informed amateurs. In 1897, itwas one of the directors of theFabrique Nationale (National

Weapons Factory) at Herstalin Belgium, who noticed a 7.65Browning pistol incorporating a

new locking mechanism. He sawthe appeal straight away and theNWF obtained the manufacturinglicense.

Thus began an uninterruptedperiod of collaboration between theinventor from the Great Salt Lakeand the factory on the banks of theMeuse River.

Browning reached the pinnacleof its craft with the Auto-5 semi-automatic shotgun, which was atremendous commercial successand prompted John Moses rstvisit to the Herstal workshops.

But his world-wide acclaim is

without doubt due to the 9 mmHi-Power semi-automatic pistol.More than 10 million of theselegendary pistols have been sold.Starting in 1907, it was adoptedby most police and armed forcesacross the world. The fact that thegeneric name for this type of gunis Browning demonstrates theuniversal acclaim and recognition ithas received.

Brownings success is not at all theresult of chance. Like all American

pioneers of that time, he turnedluck to his advantage only throughan enormous amount of hard work.

His strength of character and thesteadfastness of his principles wereout of the ordinary.

Thus it was that, towards theend of his life, when offered anhonorary title by a university, herefused it for the simple reasonthat he had made it a rule neverto accept anything that he had notearned as a result of his own work.

In 1925, John Moses Browningput the nishing touches on theprototype of an Over and Underwhich would change the history ofthe hunting shotgun. He called itsimply B25, for Browning 1925.

He died of a heart attack whileworking in his ofce in Herstal on26 November 1926. It was his 61stvisit to Belgium.

His body was repatriated to theUnited States, where he was buriedwith full military honours. His sonVal continued his collaborationwith the Belgian factory withoutinterruption.

That collaboration continues to thisvery day.

Before they are launched in themarket, Browning rearms aresubjected to several very stricttests that are specic to Browning,known as the B.A.C.O. (BrowningArms COmpany) tests.

We also carry out a full andcomplete systematic inspectionof each serial gun, which consistsof a wide number of controls toensure that each gun put on themarket will bear Brownings criteriaof quality, performance, andreliability.

No product will be authorised if it

does not fully satisfy the followingdemands.

Highly demanding tests are carriedout both for shotguns and for ries,and have the purpose of verifyingthe correct functioning of theguns, regardless of the types ofcartridges or shells used.

Thousands of cartridges are red totest the reliability of the guns, nobroken parts are tolerated duringthis test, and excessively wornparts are also unacceptable.

If any of these faults are found,there is a systematic return tothe Research and Developmentdepartment.

During the development of a newproduct, this test has the purposeof testing the guns in the worstclimatic conditions, with polar coldof 30 C or very hot temperaturesof up to +50 C.

The gun must function perfectlyat these temperatures with a widerange of cartridges.

You can therefore use our gunsin the most difcult conditions, inall circumstances, and with totalcondence.

During the development of a newproduct, it is subjected to severaltests, greatly superior to the C.I.P.norms in force, which are known astorture tests.

The rearms are subjected tooverload and obstruction tests toensure the solidity and reliability ofour guns.

We also perform safety tests,consisting of a series of droptests on all its sides to verify thereliability of its safety.

The legendary solidity and

reliability of Browning rearmsare largely due to their successfulpassing of all these tests.

During production, each gun issubjected to several visual checksas well as numerous measurementsof its dimensions. All guns mustmeet the specications in all points.

100% of the weapons produced arered to conrm their accuracy andproper functioning.

We verify the precision of eachgun that leaves our productionworkshops.

For shotguns, we check the qualityof the shot patterns as well as thecorrect convergence of the barrelsat 35 metres.

For ries, we verify the accuracyand grouping of each weapon.

1.ncreasedspeedandpenetration

Thanks to the Back Boredtechnology there is less friction be-tween the shot load and the wallsof the barrel. Instead of needing toovercome friction, powder combus-tion gasses can devote more ener-gy to propelling the cartridge wad,which results in higher load speedand greater shot penetration. Thisalso applies to greased wads.

2. Better shot patterns

With less friction on the bar-rel walls, the amount of shot notdeformed on ring is greater,which enables it to keep its ballisticqualities. As ballistic qualities areconserved, you will obtain excep-tionally regular impacts with muchmore shot that effectively hits yourtarget.

3. Less recoil

In a Back Bored barrel, the shotload travels through more easilyand, for this reason, the shooterfeels less recoil. Our Researchand Development department hasmeasured a reduction in recoil of6%.

Adjustable Invector Plus chokeshave been specially developed byour Research and DevelopmentDepartment for our Back Boredbarrel system.

They have been designed for at-taining maximum effectiveness onthe basis of two criteria: obtain-ing a perfect target at differentshooting distances.

1. The perfect target

Our objective is: To obtain shot pattern efciency

of 80% on target, i.e. 80% of theshot contained in the cartridgemust be on target inside a diam-eter of 75 cm.

A perfect shot pattern: the shotpattern must be such that thereis a minimum number of emptyareas, i.e. areas in the targetsurface where there are no shotimpacts.

The nvector Plus chokerecommended for differentshooting distances

2.Atdifferentshootingdistances

Our objective is: To obtain the perfect target at

different shooting distances.Depending on the type of chokeused, the efcient shootingdistance will be different For ex-ample, at 15 m, with an InvectorPlus Cylindrical choke, we obtaintarget shot pattern efciency of80% with a minimum numberof surfaces without any shotimpacts.

Depending on the Invector Plus youchoose, you will obtain a perfecttarget depending on your shootingdistance and the type of game youare hunting.

Browning offers a perfect balancebetween a shot-pattern efciencyof 80% and a perfect shot-patternmaterialised by a minimum numberof empty areas.

One competitors gun alone offersgood shot-pattern efciency, butthe pattern itself is much less ef-cient due to the numerous emptyzones in the target area.

Tests against competition

In its permanent concern forimprovement, Browning regularlytests its own products by compar-ing them with other guns on themarket.

Our tests show that the chokes onother guns provide good perform-ances but their shot pattern is byno means perfect and thereforelead-shot tiering is not as perfectas with Browning.

The exclusive barrel convergenceadjustment system: cannot be

altered but can be adapted todifferent types of ammunition.

Thanks to this system, theDouble Express CCS525 ries areoriginally set to 60 m by the LigeTest Bench and the two impactsmust be within a 5 cm square.

Whatever the diameter of theadjustment ring installed in the

muzzle of the gun, the barrelconvergence angle maintainsa natural pressure and, thus,permanent contact between themuzzle of the upper barrel and thebarrel spacer wedge.

As this wedge is itself silver-brazedon the lower barrel, the position ofthe muzzle of the upper barrel isperfectly maintained on the axis ofthe muzzle of the lower barrel.

The ammunition used isWinchester Partition 12.96 g and18.53 g for the 8 x 57 JRS and 9.3x 74 R calibres, respectively.

For the 30R Blaser, Blaser CDP10.7 g ammunition is used. Ifyou would like to use a differentammunition, you must adapt yourgun using one of the 6 adjustmentrings delivered with your rie.
