LOCAL HISTORY - Whites Guide 1842
COLSTERWORTH is a large village, 8 miles south of Grantham, in a picturesque valley of the Witham, at the point where the great north road eaves the Roman Erwin Street. Its parish increased its population from 649 souls, in 1801, to 1017, in 1841, and contend upwards of 3000 acres of land, including the hamlets of Twyford, half a mile south, and Woolsthorpe, half a mile west of the village, which was made a post town when the turnpike was completed, in 1752. Cpbr. Turnor, Esq., is lord of the manors of Colsterworth and Woolsthorpe, which contain about 2400 acres; and Earl Dysart lord of the manor of Twyford. They own the greater part of the soil; and the rest belongs to R. K. Kelham, Esq., Mr. Robert Taylor and many smaller freeholders, some of whom are residents. The parish extends westward to Cringle Brook and the borders of Leicestershire, and contains several large woods. The Church (St. John the Baptist) is a neat structure, with a low embattled tower, ornamented with pinnacles. The arches on the south side of the nave are Anglo-Saxon, but all the others are pointed. The chancel was rebuilt in 1770, and the porch to 1800. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £14. 9s. 10d., and now at £585, is in the incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Henry Mirehouse, who, as prebendary of South Grantham, in Salisbury Cathedral, is also the patron. The glebe is 23 acres, exclusive of the gardens and grounds round the Rectory House. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1836. The National School, with a house for the master, was built in 1824, by the late Edmund Turnor, Esq., who bequeathed, in 1829, £1000 three per cent. consols, in trust, to pay £20 a year to the master, and to lay out the remainder of the dividends in fuel for the school, and in cleaning and repairing the buildings, except £l to be paid as rent for the house. The school is open to all the poor children of Colsterworth, Woolsthorpe North and South Stoke, and Skillington, but they pay Id. each per week to the master, who also takes six children in respect of Dodwell's Charity in Stoke.WOOLSTHORPE, an ancient hamlet, half a mile west of Colsterworth, consists of the old Manor House, and a few small farm houses and thatched cottages, one of which was formerly a Chapel of Ease and still retain, a Gothic window and a zig-zag Norman arch. The Manor House, an ancient building, now occupied by a farmer, was the birthplace of the immortal SIR ISAAC NEWTON, whose father. John Newton Esq., was lord of this small manor. Sir Isaac was born on Christmas-Day, 1642, and having made some proficiency in the classics, &c., at the grammar School in Grantham he was taken home by his widowed mother (being an only child) to assist in the management of his paternal estate. The love of books and study occasioned his farming concerns to be neglected, and in 1660, he was sent to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he passed rapidly through Euclid, &c., to the Analysis of Des Cartes, Kepler's Optics, &c., making occasional improvements on his author, and entering his observations on the margin. He soon obtained the notice and friendship of that eminent mathematician, Dr. Barrow. In 1664, he took the degree of B.A., and employed himself in speculations and experiments on the nature of light and colours, grinding and polishing optic glasses, and opening the way his new method of flexions and infinite series. Next year, the plague raged in Cambridge, and he retired to Woolsthorpe, where be laid the foundation of his universal system of gravitation, the first hint of which be received from seeing an apple fall from a tree; and subsequent reasoning induced him to conclude, that the same force which brought down the apple might extend to the moon, and retain her in her orbit. He afterwards extended the doctrine to all the bodies in the solar system, and demonstrated, in the evident manner, the laws which Kepler had discovered, that the planets move in elliptical orbits, describe equal areas in equal times, and that the squares of their periodical times are as the cubes their distances. Every part of natural philosophy received improvement from his searching mind.

I don’t know how long the old eyes will stand up to the
strain of preparing the artwork on a low resolution monitor.
The computer that I used to do it on had a nice
large screen but it decided to give up. So is there someone
who would like to take on the editorship and preparation?

KURLINGWell, it's all over for another year. I am, of course talking about the Kurling Competition. Bill has moth balled his clip board and the Trophy is standing on the mantelpiece of the winner. Now of course dear reader, you are all agog to know who the winner was. Well the winner was Bill! Before you even think about it, it was all straight and above board. Bill played his way right through to the final and his every move was monitored. This wasn't easy because Bill does shift around a bit. Seriously he played a very good competition coming up against our brilliant lady finalist Rona. The result was very close but the best man won!
On 10th August we had our Barbecue. The morning dawned rather dark and we thought that it would have to be an indoor event. However the rain that was forecast never did materialise and we were able to congregate on the Sports field. Our thanks to the Sports and Social club for allowing this.
Bill and Fran were the chefs (my word Bill is featuring a bit in this report hope it doesn't go to his head) and they made a very good job of the beef and sausages. Well apart from Fran dropping a plate of sausages on the grass but as he commented they would be fine for the Committee! Please be assured that no one else was served them and no sausages were hurt in the fall!We had a most enjoyable time with some lingering well into the afternoon. Too much wine I think and were unable to get out of their seat. Many thanks to those who provided puddings, salad and raffle prizes.
On a more serious note now. Some of our members have not been too well recently .We are delighted to hear that some are now getting better. For those of you who are still not too good we send our best wishes and want you to know that you are in our thoughts.
LUNCHEON CLUBAt the end of July we dined at the Tollemache in Buckminster. This is the first time we have returned since it was taken over by new owners. The transformation is delightful. It has been refurbished to a high standard and the food was superb. June has the Menu for the Christmas Lunch to be held at Belton Park Golf Club. She tells me that it's a cracker (sorry I know it's only August)
For information on the Luncheon Club please ring June on 861400

WOMEN'S INSTITUTEWith an almost one hundred percentage attendance, and a visitor, the clubroom was abuzz with the expectation of spending an afternoon with Queen Victoria. With a touch of the theatrical Betty Elmer, in the guise of Her Majesty sat upon her throne (it was just Gillian's dining chair really), and told us all about Victoria's life, her husband Albert and her children. Betty is an exceptional speaker, no notes, an incredible memory for dates, names and events. She kept her audience's attention throughout the talk. Helen Scorror thanked her, saying that she could remember taking her small children to Betty's storytelling at the Grantham library years ago. This brought the news that Betty is to retire from public speaking at the end of the year and went on to tell us all about her family. So we had two talks for the price of one, certainly she was very good value for money. With the absence of our president, Janet Bennett still recovering from her knee operation, Gillian Dexter took the Chair welcoming back Mary Cowley now recovered from her recent spell in hospital. It was also lovely to see Rosemarie who hasn't been able to attend for some time; she was doubly welcome especially as she brought a most delicious cake for refreshment time. Our business included appeals
for help for the coffee morning to be held on 16th September, W.I.Day at the White Lion from 10 to 12 noon to celebrate the formation of the W.I. a hundred years ago. We have invited our neighbouring Institutes and we extend the invitation to any of our former members of our Institute to celebrate the occasion. You will be most welcome. County Federation have events lined up for the winter, a quiz evening, AGM resolutions discussion and debate, a craft workshop in November, The last one they staged, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall dropped in. ( I've not heard if there is to be a special guest this time though). There is a Christmas lunch with a talk and fashion show (Vintage Versace) to follow in December, not a bad price either £14.50. see me for tickets. We came third in the Lincolnshire Show cake challenge, not bad for the size of our membership. Gillian has been successful in the Take-a-Chance Federation lottery' which we enter to keep the Federation afloat. It's only a fiver for the year. Tickets are now available for the Kesteven Group meeting to be held at Walton Girls' School in October. The speaker is Chris Wright who will tell us of the trials and tribulations of clearing his aunt's belongings following her death. There are both amusing and sad elements in his talk we are told
and he comes highly recommended. We are door stewards at the event. We are all set for the Centenary Exhibition at North Kesteven Council Offices in Sleaford. It is open to the general public (see the posters in the village) , so if you are in Sleaford on the 19th September why not pop in and see what the ladies of the W.I. have produced. It sounds as if it will be worth a visit. The competition for a Victorian item proved very popular with lots of entries. Betty Elmer who judged it, said that it was very difficult and she wished that everyone should win. However, in the end she decided that Audrey Wheatley's diamond jubilee mug was in first place and my great grandma's brooch in second place. Lucky Audrey even won the raffle prize along with Mary and our visitor Kath Miners. Our next meeting on 15th September in the Sports and Social Club at two o'clock will be a "potpourri" as they say. We are entertaining ourselves, a social afternoon. Why not join us? Bring along any memorabilia you have for the coffee morning. We will take great care of it. You will be most welcome and you know that there will be a good cup of tea and cake, although we will have to go some to beat Rosemarie's cake that we had this last month. See you at 2.o'clock then Dot Williams

“Community Lincs” is actively involved in a national initiative to develop a Good Neighbour Neighbours Network
across rural areas of England.A Good Neighbour Scheme is a community project run on a voluntary basis by a group of local residents who
recognise the value in having 'good neighbours' particularly in areas where public transport and other local services can be limited and where families of residents live some distance away.
Each volunteer decides what sort of help they are able to offer, how much and when. They do not undertake tasks best left to qualified professionals but can help with things like occasional lifts, companionship, small
household jobs or shopping. All volunteers are fully insured for extra peace of mind. Anyone who needs some extra help can ring the Scheme's telephone number. Calls are answered by a volunteer phone-handler who then
matches the request for assistance with an appropriate and available volunteer. In the first instance, a new Scheme requires a group of interested people who would be prepared to set up a properly constituted steering group. If you are interested in being part of this organising group, you can find
out more information by contacting the Parish Clerk for an information pack on 01476 861888 or by email to

NATURAL HISTORY BULLETIN
The Purple Emperor butterfly has been seen and photographed in Twyford Wood. One was also seen in Morkery Wood. If this is not an introduction, then it is an interesting find. If it is an introduction then it is meaningless as a wildlife record. Unless introductions are approved and monitored by the relevant conservation organisations, they confuse and obscure the status of species. A white admiral butterfly seen in Twyford Wood 10 years ago was probably an unofficial introduction as was one of chalk hill blues in Ancaster in the l980s. In both cases new colonies didn't become established.
The status of the purple emperor is difficult to establish because the adult spends its life in the woodland canopy, feeding on aphid honeydew. Only the male, with the nickname 'His Majesty' shows a purple sheen in sunlight on the dark

upper side of his wings. The underside of the wings of both sexes is similarly patterned in browns and creams. It is the fully grown green caterpillars, feeding on willow, which have a distinctive appearance. They develop a pair of horn-like protuberances on their heads. To see the adults enthusiasts have been known to tempt them down from the trees with decaying banana skins. The most excitable of the observers may be rewarded by the butterfly landing on them. His Majesty also likes the salts in human perspiration!
Another exotic sighting was reported in August. Two local people travelling between Thistleton and South Witham spotted a large bird of prey with a white head sitting atop an oak tree. It was possibly an osprey.(escaping the crowds at the Rutland Bird Fair?)
Changes noted in our gardens in August were the appearance of the Vanessid butterflies (peacock, small tortoiseshell and comma (but no red
admirals). An occasional small copper and holly blue were found amongst the hordes of whites. A pair of mating common blues were seen near their food plants the bird's foot trefoil. In one garden an unusual sight was a meadow grasshopper in the long grass. Ladybirds have finally made an appearance. Yellow and black mullein moth caterpillars at the end of July were replaced by yellow and black cinnabar caterpillars in August. The swifts were gone by the second week in August and house martins have started to congregate. An encouraging number of hedgehogs has been reported.
The best of our roadside verges have purple scabious, knapweed and thistles peeping through the tall seedheads with all manner of yellow species of the dandelion group.
To look for in September Still plenty of insects to find on flowers and finches on the seedheads. Look particularly for goldfinches on their preferred plant , the teasel. The amount of fruits on trees varies from year to year and it is worth noticing the differences along with the galls unique to each species. There may also be some spectacular dragonflies about.
I look forward to your records at 61 Woolsthorpe Road, 860465 e-mail
