Well, it’s a tradition.“Kin” Hubbard, creator of those

cartoony figures you see around Nashville, drew “Abe Martin of Brown County” for the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. The Abe Martin character offered wit and wisdom with a questionable grasp on English, but a firm root in old-time practicality.

Hubbard published five “Almanack”s full of Martin’s sayings, intended as parodies of “Poor Richard’s Almanac” or the “Old Farmer’s Almanac.”

Brown Countian Tom Hensely published the first Brown County Almanack in 1965, retaining the Hubbard spelling and sensibility. The Brown County Democrat revived the tradition in the early 1970s, and has carried on quarterly ever since.

Considered the Art Colony of the Midwest, Brown Coun-

ty boasts more than 70 artists and working studios, and

each year several artists swing wide their studio doors to

locals and guests. Approximately 14 years ago, the Studio

& Garden Tour began inviting visitors to see the work

spaces of local artists over the course of one weekend in

June. Quickly, the tour became so popular, though, that

it was difficult for much one-on-one interaction between

artists and guests, and so, three years later, The Back

Roads of Brown County fall tour was born.

The autumn addition (www.browncountystudiotour.

com/falltour2012.htm) spans the entire month of

October, with 11 studios staying open for a set

number of hours each day. The T.C. Steele State

Historic Site, approximately 10 minutes from

downtown Nashville, serves as the tour’s

headquarters. There, guests can pick up a

brochure and a tour map, detailing the hours

and addresses of the studios featured. A wide

range of media will be represented in the self-

guided tour; this year’s guests can visit the work

spaces of a local blacksmith, a jeweler, a weaver, a

potter, several painters, a bookbinder and more.

artists might shy away from showing how they

work. Not so in Brown County.

some cases get their hands on—approximately

26 weaving looms. Gustin’s 1,500-square-foot

studio houses approximately 18 of those looms,

each with projects in various states of completion.

Gustin regularly offers day weaving classes and

workshops from her studio, which she and her

husband, Robert, have filled with looms, she says,

in order to give others the chance to try their hand

at the craft—without spending money on the

equipment. “It’s hard to do when you don’t have

the equipment,” she said. “We wanted to have the

looms so that people who think they might want

to try weaving can actually try it.”

Gustin will offer weaving and spinning demon-

strations throughout the month, and—if the tim-

ing is right—a dye kettle may be in use. Each year,

the artist plants a weaver’s garden on her property,

from which she grows plants like flax and cotton

that she can later dye from natural ingredients,

such as onion skins and basil. All in all, Gustin

says she hopes to help cultivate a love for weaving

in her studio guests. “There are a lot of people who

nowadays say, ‘I did some weaving in college, and

I’ve always wanted to go back to it,’” she explains.

“I’m trying to be the bridge there, to bring them

back to it.”

Like Gustin, self-taught potter Larry Spears

(Spears Gallery, 5110 S. State Road 135, Nashville,

the studio tours since their inception. This year,

however, Spears will open two locations for visi-

tors to peruse. His original location on State Road

135 South is his “working” studio, he says, where

guests will find—and can purchase—his func-

shops, including one called “Clay Day,” which

takes place every August.

Spears’ new retail spot at 15 S. Van Buren St.,

next to the Nashville House restaurant, offers

hundreds of handmade items for purchase, all cre-

ated by local and regional artists whom Spears has

met over the years while attending regional and

national art shows. The new store features works

made not just from stoneware and porcelain, but

also includes a wide array of styles and influences,

as well as media. Fiber jewelry, photography,

woodworks and more are available for purchase,

he says. “There’s nothing else like this around.”

HOWWhen the Little Nashville Opry burned in Sep-

tember 2009, and then—just a year later—Indiana

University’s Theatre Department announced its

plans to pull out of event programming at the

Brown County Playhouse, it felt like the options for

evening entertainment around the county were—

to use a cliché—dropping like flies. The Palace

Theatre of Brown County was still holding its own,

yes, but the appeal of the area for locals and guests

alike lay in its variety of nighttime offerings, as well

as the multitude of shopping and dining options

offered by day.

Enter Suzannah Levett Zody and five other local

supporters. “When the Opry burned and then IU

was out, it was a shock,” she says. “On the heels of

the Opry, it (the IU announcement) was severe.” So

the group, under the leadership of Zody as presi-

dent, did something to ease the pain. They formed

a six-member board, secured nonprofit status for

the playhouse and opened its doors once again. “It

was such a part of the community. I just saw it as

something that had to happen.”

Beyond changing the official name of the play-

house (it’s now called the Brown County Playhouse

Performing Arts Center), the group took a look at

how to bring more variety to the center’s produc-

tion offerings, as well as how to make it active and

open to the community for use year-round.

They’re well on their ways to achieving their

goals. By the end of 2012, the board will have

produced or hired companies to produce approxi-

mately 100 shows with a variety of themes. “We feel

our focus is not to be just music or theater or film,”

Zody explains. Instead they want to appeal to a

wide range of audiences with quality productions,

she adds.

The process has had its share of trial and error,

she says. “That’s showbiz. We all have this vision

of a vibrant art center, and I don’t know how that’s

going to formulate in the future. There are things

we’re doing now that I never thought would hap-

pen.” Things, she says, like the finger-style guitar

competition that took place at the playhouse in July.

Or the John Denver tribute show that was also held

this summer. “I didn’t see that coming,” she says.

“It was an absolute nostalgic evening. It was some-

thing that was really special. We just continue to

focus on what we think is special. We’ll get it right

and wrong. So far, we’ve gotten a lot right.”

Theatre offers shows that are written,

directed, produced and oftentimes

performed by its owners, as well as

its powerhouse team of perform-

ers. “All of our shows are original

musicals,” Zumwalt says. “We write

them.”

Variety is also key to the Palace

Theatre’s production schedule, he

says, as well as sticking to what

works. Zumwalt says the theater re-

cently brought back “Tumbleweed,”

a show that was a “huge hit two years

ago. We’re really doing what’s popu-

lar this season. We’re doing the sure

hits. We have people who come back

over and over to these shows.”

Productions like “It’s Only Tem-

porary,” “Tumbleweed” and “Classic

Country Jukebox,” which features

country music from the 1920s to the

’90s, fill out the season’s schedule.

And from the sounds of it, the pro-

ductions are keeping local and out-

of-town guests happy.

Zumwalt tells a quick story about

a recent busload of tourists who ar-

rived at the theater for a summer

production. “They paid us the best

compliment,” he says. “I had the

tour operator tell me that we didn’t

charge enough. When someone who

pays the bill tells you that you’re not

charging enough, you know your

show is good.”

Motor Sports Live music, a bike contest, arm wrestling, a scavenger hunt and

more mark the Bean Blossom Biker Fest, annually at Bill Monroe

Memorial Music Park. This family-run affair is now in its 10th year,

says Holly Farabaugh, event coordinator. “We provide a lot of en-

tertainment with four days of music, field events, a bike show, pool

tournaments, vendors, et cetera, but our attendees really make the

event,” she says. “They are laid back, fun-loving people who are very

respectful to our staff and each other.”

Those fun-loving people attend in droves, too. Approximately

4,500 people arrive for the event each year. “If you have never been

before, you should expect to have a great time with great people,”

Farabaugh says.

Presented since 1972, the Cider Run gives Indiana Street Rod

Association members and their friends a chance to enjoy Brown

County while meeting up with old and new acquaintances and

showing off their rides. Antique cars, hot rods, street rods and more

are welcome to be placed on display at the two-day event. Guests

also can take part in (or just watch) the annual “Flag Drags” races

or take a ride on the annual southern Indiana cruise that explores

the hills and valleys across the lower half of the state.

Pedal Power If bicycling is more your style, the biggest fundraising event of the

year for the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association

arrives each year with the turning of the leaves. The Brown County

Indiana offers wheeled wonders for every enthusiast.

Breakdown is now in its eighth year, and each event sees hun-

dreds hopping on their bikes for a ride along beautiful trails in

the world-renowned hardwood forests of southern Indiana.

A full weekend’s worth of fun, with free bicycle and product

demonstrations, live music, a complimentary beer tasting, a

hog roast and more, accompanies the rides. “It’s a great family

event,” says Tania Juillerat, event director. “We get people of all

ages who come out.”

The weekend offers a family ride, she says, on a trail that any-

one can tackle, and every ride is a “celebration of mountain bik-

ing in Indiana,” she says. “It’s not a race. It’s a great ride in the

woods.”

Though no longer running through Brown County, the Hilly

Hundred covers miles of beautiful southern Indiana through

adjacent counties. Hosted by the Central Indiana Bicycling As-

sociation, the Hilly brings more than 5,000 bicyclists to the area

for a weekend of riding, music and entertainment. This year, the

45th annual event also boasts a costume contest and a variety

show, beyond the miles of road.

Though it might seem like the Hilly is all about bikes, Skip

Higgins, managing director, assures us it’s not. “The rest stops,

the entertainment, it’s more of a people event than a bicycle

event,” he says. “We invite people to bring their friends and to

make new ones while they’re here. We emphasize the people.”
