OBITUARY

Frank Andrew Roundtree was born on October 18, 1941, to Rev.

and Mrs. Frank (Willie Mae) Roundtree, Sr. He was the first born

of his parents four (4) children. At the age of seven, Frank and his

family transition from Jacksonville, Florida to Douglas, Georgia

after his father’s death. The family came to Douglas to live with

his maternal grandmother. His parents, grandmother, and two of

his siblings preceded him in death.

As a youth, Frank became an active member of Gaines Chapel

AME Church and remained a committed and dedicated member

until his health failed recently. Frank developed some very strong

work ethics at an early age. He cut grass, cleaned offices, cropped

tobacco, and picked lots of cotton as a teenager contributing his

wages for the welfare of the family. He became a certified

lifeguard and worked during the summer months for the Douglas

City Recreation under his mother's supervision.

He attended Carver High & Elementary School and graduated at

the age of sixteen (16). He received his undergraduate degree from

Morris Brown College at age 20 and began his teaching career

immediately. He taught at Carver High School and was later

transferred to Coffee High School, where he taught for 31 years

totally before his retirement. He loved teaching and loved to teach

2nd and 3rd generation students. Early in his career as an

educator, he met the love of his life, Juanita Garland. After dating

for six years, they married and remained married for 49 years until

her death.

Precious Memories OBITUARY

They were such good parents to their students but were even better

parents to their nieces and nephews. Both made their family members

a high priority. The two spent most of their time being good stewards

of what God blessed them with. They gardened, harvested pecans,

groomed, and landscaped their property.

They were caregivers to their parents and each other, and they loved

shopping and short term traveling. They went fishing together.

Whatever the two did, they enjoyed doing it together. Frank would

only golf without her.

Frank enjoyed being an educator so much he continued after

retirement, working as an educator at the RYDC in Ocilla, Georgia,

and later at the adult prison in Nicholls, Georgia, graduating a

historical number of students from the prison population. He spent

time as a jailor for a brief period also as a limousine driver, loving

interaction with his clientele during trips to various venues.

Frank, while he never played sports in high school nor his collegiate

years, he was an avid sports fan. He coached for many years for the

Douglas Recreation League having winning seasons; won two state

championships in baseball and basketball in his role as head coach.

His players honor his role as a character builder, utilizing sports as

the conduit, even at present. Whatever his employment entailed,

Frank was an excellent provider for any and all of his family. He

gave freely to his family, friends, church, and community, where he is

faithfully known as “Tree.”

Frank is survived by one (1) sister, Rev. Viola Roundtree (Terry)

Parker, her daughter, Joann M Ross, Joann’s five children, nieces,

nephews, grandnieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of other

family and friends.
