BROOKS/McCORMICK KIRBY SAINE

God’s Shining Star: Next week’s upcoming God Shining Stars are Raegan, Zach and Jack. We can’t wait to hear all about you!

Religion: In religion this week we learned about showing respect in mass, what living our Catholic life should look like, and wrote cards to appreciate our special staff and our parents. We ended our week with a yummy burger madness lunch and dance party outside. Next week we will bring the learners into the Church to visit the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. We will also take a closer look at stories from the bible. The learners will review bible passages and find examples that display love. They will then write about the chosen story and describe how to shows love. These writing samples will be displayed for the month of February.

Social Studies- This week the learners collaborated together to discuss and list what unusual foods they would eat if they were in the New World. We are in the process of crossing off duplicate food items and the winner will be the group that has the longest list of foods left and will earn acres of corn for their settlement map. Next, the learners will try to earn peace with the Native Americans. This will be crucial to their success in the New World.

English Language Arts - Our focus in readingworkshop this week has beenreading with our brains turned onhigh, pausing, and jotting downinteresting points, strong images, curious thoughts, new words andend of section summaries. Thesebig ideas serve as the springboardfor grand conversations. Readersread differently knowing they’regoing to be in conversations withothers. They read, holdingconversations in their mind -increasing comprehension. Ourlearners have engaged in somepretty incredible conversations!

Writing - In writing workshop thelearners have been busy creatingoutlines for their informationalbooks. These outlines areessentially the chapters for theirbooks and will serve as thefoundation for their table ofcontents. This week learners willbegin with the chapter that feelsthe easiest and write - a lot!Fluency, stamina, and speed areimportant for writers; this unitwill give learners ampleopportunity to practice each skill.

Mathematics - Learners began taking multiplication timed tests this week and are making their own flash cards based on their individual needs. Eventually these flashcards will all be on a binder ring and will come back and forth from school to home each day so they may study these facts nightly. We are also changing the format in which we do Simple Solutions. Each week there will be a set 4 lessons that learners will be responsible for and quizzed on each Friday. Learners may go ahead in the lessons, however they will still be held responsible for the weekly quiz. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this change. The lessons for next week will be 61-64.

STEM - We have a teepee in our garden fit with sweet peas that are ready to climb! The sunshine is making our towers thrive and next week our last small garden box will get pea shoots. Thank you to 4th grade for hosting us for Step-up Day. We had a blast making slime!
