Elective Courses
Elective courses are any courses that you choose beyond the required courses.
They can be academic courses or FA/AS courses.
In Grade 10, you have two elective spots.
Language 11
Some post-secondary programs require a Language 11 and some do not.
Our best advice: ►Keep your options open.
► Check individual university/college programs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I take Grade 11 elective courses in Grade 10? The Grade 11 elective courses that are open to Grade 10s have been
underlined on the Course Options sheet (back of the course selection sheet).
Can I take Grade 11 academic courses in Grade 10? You must have the pre-requisite Grade 10 course before you can take
a Grade 11 academic. But, remember, you have lots of room in Grade 11 and 12 to take all the academic courses that you may need for various PSI programs. Grade 10 can be a difficult year (more homework and three provincial exams). Think carefully about why you would like to take an extra academic in Grade 10.
Do I need a Language 11 to graduate? A Language 11 course is not required for graduation requirements;
however, it can be a requirement of some PSI programs. For example, UBC and SFU still require a Language 11 to enter any of their programs.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I take any of my courses online? The Brooks Online program offers many courses to our students inside of our
timetable. The most successful online students are independent, organized, and motivated. Your teachers are there to help guide you, but students must be capable and willing to direct their own learning. Students must plan for an online course to be included in their schedules…spaces are limited.
Which math course should I take…Foundations and Pre-calculus 10 or Apprenticeship and Workplace 10? Your math teacher can help you decide which course would be better suited
to your current skills and abilities. AWM 10 is useful for direct entry into the workforce, or for some trade options. FMP 10 is for students who would like to attend university. Please note: many colleges and trades require an academic math 11 for entry into some of their programs.
Can I still change my courses once the school year begins? We encourage students to make any course selections by the end of July. The
timetable can be quite difficult to change for students once it has been created and changes may not be possible.
