Debunking myths of parent involvement in Middle School
Music Department Comeback
Bronco News
Engaged parents can also reduce
the effects of negative peer pres-
sure that often push kids to be-
come unmotivated in school.
Even though students may roll
their eyes about moms helping at
school, parents can be reassured that their involvement has long-
lasting positive effects on their
children’s academic motivation
and performance.

This year at Spring Lake Middle
School parent volunteers were recognized for their involvement
for the 1st 9 weeks. We at SLMS
promote parent participation in
activities that meet the needs of
both their own students and oth-
ers on campus. With parent in-
volvement we can build a strong
framework for student achieve-
ment.

Four Myths about Parent In-
volvement in Middle School
Five or six different teachers. A
labyrinth building. Lockers. New
friends. Moving up to middle
school can be overwhelming for
parents and students alike. But it doesn’t have to be.
By increasing engagement, par-
ents and their children will be-
come more comfortable with mid-
dle school, sending student moti-
vation and performance skyrock-
eting. Parents often have miscon-
ceptions about getting involved in
middle school. Here is one com-mon myth about parent involve-
ment in grades 6-8 and how to
debunk it.
Myth #1: Children don’t need their
parents as much in middle school. Some parents get to middle
school thinking their kids know all
about the school routine, so they
don’t need to be as involved. But
the evidence says otherwise. Even
at the middle level, parents still
play an important role. Research from Harvard Universi-
ty’s Family Research Pro-ject shows that the children of
involved parents tend to do better
in school across a number of
measures, including a higher
overall GPA, better scores on
standardized tests, and an in-
creased likelihood of enrolling in
college.
Important: The band classroom
restoration is nearing completion!
The music department had a won-
derful Winter Concert. The concert was a huge success and it fea-
tured the Spring Lake Middle
School Orchestra, a flute soloist,
and chorus.
Band students will be auditioning
for the Southeastern Division All-
District Band in January. Infor-
mation to follow.
Our Fall Bronco Cup Fundraiser
was also a success. We would like to send a huge "Thank You!" to
everyone who purchased a cup
from us or gave a donation. The
proceeds from the fundraiser will
help us purchase some new in-
strument cases to replace the
ones that are beyond repair. The
cups will arrive for distribution
sometime in January.

Upcoming Events
We are planning to have another field trip in
January 2017.

At Spring Lake Middle School (SLMS) our stu-
dents have a wonderful opportunity to partici-pate in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gate-
way program. This Science, Technology, Engi-
neering, and Math (STEM) program is hands on
and empowers students to lead their own dis-
covery, boosts classroom engagement, drives
collaboration, inspires “aha!” moments, and
promotes deep comprehension.
So far this year our students have worked in teams as engineers to design foot orthoses for
patients with cerebral palsy, research the vari-
ous fields of engineering, designed and created
furniture using 3D technology, and built models
using VEX robotics.
The 6thand 7th graders are currently designing
and building paper roller coasters. They will be
discussing Newton’s Laws of Motion and calcu-
lating average speed.
The 8th graders are currently building mechani-
cal systems using VEX robotics components.

Club Highlight
The mission of the faculty and staff of Spring Lake Middle is to
provide a safe, orderly, caring environment that facilitates high
academic achievement, fosters awareness of cultural diversity
and individuality and empowers students with essential skills to
become life-long learners. As a result, every adult on our campus
including the receptionists, custodial staff, counselors, teachers,
and administrators, is charged with an awesome responsibil-
ity: We must positively influence the “total child.” We are com-
mitted to this charge here in our small corner of the world, with
the belief that from this small corner will emerge bright, produc-
tive individuals who will make a positive difference in every cor-
ner of the world!
