General Information, Registration

Refund policyUnless specified, refunds for memberships or programs already in progress will be issued within the first two weeks or first two classes. A $15 administrative fee will be deducted. After two weeks or two classes, refunds may be issued due to extreme circumstances (injury, accident, permanent relocation outside the Niagara Region). Written documentation may be required.

Refunds for certification programs will only be issued when the Welcome Desk receives notice of cancellation at least five business days prior to the course start date. This is due to financial commitments to the instructor, the certification governing body, and 100% attendance requirement.

We reserve the right to cancel any program that does not have sufficient registration. Participants will receive a full refund and notification prior to the beginning of the course. Please ensure that the phone number, email address, and mailing address we have in our system is current when you register.

Returns or exchanges on clothing and merchandise can be made within 2 weeks of the purchase date. An original receipt must be presented and the tag must be intact. A refund will not be issued for items that have been worn, washed or stained.

Register earlyClasses can fill quickly and often require a minimum number of participants to run, so please register early. Classes with low enrolment may be cancelled.

Confirmation of registrationWhen registering online, you can print a copy of your receipt. If registering in person or by phone, an official receipt will be emailed to you for confirmation and tax purposes. Check your receipt for course information. Please ensure that we have your most up-to-date contact information in our system. If you do not have access to email, please request a printed copy of your receipt when you are at Brock.

Please note that if you prefer to mark your email as “private”, a child tax credit receipt will not be automatically emailed to you at the end of the year. You will need to pick one up in person at the Walker Complex Welcome Desk.

IntramuralsWho can participate?Full-time and part-time students with a valid Brock I.D. card and members of the Walker Complex (faculty, staff, alumni and community) can participate.

How to enter (two ways)As a team1. Register your team on the dates indicated for the sport. You

can register at the Walker Complex Welcome Desk or online at brocku.ca/recreation-services

2. After registering and paying, register your team on our online scheduling system at IMLeagues.com/brocku

As a free agent (individual)Sign up at the Welcome Desk or online at brocku.ca/recreation-services and pay the individual registration fee. We will do our best to place you on a team or form a new team. You must sign up before the registration deadline for your league. After registering at the Welcome Desk, make an account with IMLeagues at IMLeagues.com/brocku and join the individual team. Following the captains’ meeting, you will be contacted by the convenor.

Note: • Leagues must have a minimum of four teams to run.• League format will be determined based on the number of

teams. • Officials will not be provided. You will call your own game. • A time keeper/score keeper will be provided. • Attendance at the Captain’s meeting is mandatory.

Intramural LeaguesIn person registration opens Monday, April 27 and ends Monday, May 4. Leagues run May 5 to June 18.

Co-ed Basketball Tuesdays, 6-8 p.m., May 5-June 16$20 entry fee + $40 performance bond per team. The captain’s meeting will be held immediately before the first game on May 5.

Co-ed 4’s VolleyballWednesdays, 6-8 p.m., May 6-June 17$20 entry fee + $40 performance bond per team. The captain’s meeting will be held immediately before the first game on May 6.

First Aid, Advanced Aquatic Courses

Standard First Aid CPR C-AEDTraining is provided on all aspects of first aid and CPR (adult, child, infant) and is designed for those who want an in-depth understanding of first aid such as medical/legal, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns and medical emergencies. Certification is recognized by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.

Training includes prevention, risk management, recognition and treatment for anaphylaxis including how to use an auto-injector (EpiPen and Twinject).

Standard First Aid recertification procedureCurrent Standard First Aid (SFA) award holders may recertify their Lifesaving Society SFA certification once on a Lifesaving Society SFA Recertification Course not more than three years from the Standard First Aid date of issue. To renew SFA certifications subsequently, award holders must repeat the full SFA Course. Thereafter, individuals may renew by alternating recertifications and original courses. Holders of Standard First Aid certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate on a Lifesaving Society recertification course. They may recertify only with the original certifying agency.

Emergency First Aid CPR BLearn first aid principles and emergency treatment of injuries including victim assessment, CPR, choking, respiratory and circulatory injuries such as heart attack and stroke, and how to deal with external bleeding. Emergency First Aid is recognized by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.

Canadian First Aid Manual 2010 version: $15

Bronze Medallion Gain an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education – judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, as well as defence methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 m timed swim. Prerequisite: 13 years of age by the exam date or Bronze Star certification.

Bronze CrossDesigned for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. Includes a timed 600 m swim. Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion, Emergency First Aid CPR B from either Lifesaving Society or Canadian Red Cross or St. John’s Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol First Aid certification.

Sport Fundamentals Camp (ages 8-15)Improve your strokes with 25 m swims in front crawl, back crawl and whip kick. With 100 m workouts and 25 m sprints, fitness levels should increase. Touch and go turns will also be introduced. Hitting a target with a rope, movement with flippers, swimming underneath an obstacle, securing a rescue tube to a manikin and treading water while supporting an object, are some of the sport skills to be enjoyed. Participants should be comfortable in the deep end, able to swim 25 meters and tread water for 45 seconds. Prerequisite: Swimmer 3.

National LifeguardValid in all provinces and recognized as legal certification for lifeguarding throughout Canada, training consists of core material plus content specific to a working pool environment. You will be trained in emergency care, how to prevent accidents, spot potential trouble and intervene. You will identify hazards, determine safe practices and educate the public about hazards and risks associated with aquatic activities and how to be Water Smart. Prerequisites: 16 years of age by the exam date, a Bronze Cross certification and Standard First Aid CPR C from either Lifesaving Society or Canadian Red Cross or St. John’s Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol certification.

Check-in or replacement cardCheck in at the Central Equipment Room each time you visit with your Brock student I.D. and/or membership card with photo I.D. and obtain a wristband. Should you forget your membership card, you will be granted two free look-up entries to confirm your status. Following this, if you cannot produce your card, a look-up fee of $2 will be charged. Should you require a new membership card, the replacement cost is $15. If your Brock student I.D. card is lost, you will need to visit the One Card office to replace it.

Apparel• Clean, non-marking indoor athletic

shoes must be worn in the gyms, courts, Zone and track.

• Baggy tank tops, bare torsos and street clothing/footwear are not permitted in activity areas.

• Pants and shorts should not have protruding metal which can cut the equipment (i.e., belts, zippers).

• Shorts must have a minimum inseam of two inches.

• Gym bags, knapsacks, jackets, keys and other personal items are not allowed in activity areas (gymnasia, The Zone, pool).

• Lockers are available in the change rooms for day use. Please bring your own lock or rent/buy one from the Central Equipment Room.

• Bathing suits must be worn in the swimming pool and family shower.

• Infants and toddlers who participate in the fun and leisure swim with a parent must wear a swim diaper. Cloth or disposable diapers are not allowed. Swim diapers are available for purchase from the Central Equipment Room.

• Proper attire must be worn while using the squash and outdoor tennis courts (includes shirts).

• It is strongly recommended that goggles be worn while playing squash.

Nightly closingPlease note that the use of activity areas is expected to cease 10 minutes prior to closing to allow you time to shower and retrieve your belongings.

Pool deckAnyone who wishes to remain on the pool deck must wear proper swim attire. Parents will be directed to watch their children from the pool gallery.

Brock Student lockersLockers can be purchased for the duration of your membership while quantities last. See membership upgrades on previous page for more information.

LockersMembers are required to empty the contents of their locker or renew by the expiry date. Athletics and Recreation is not responsible for items left in your locker. If contents are removed by our staff, they will be stored in the Central Equipment Room for two weeks and then disposed of. If you have rented a locker, you must use the lock that is provided by the department. Locks are to be left on the locker at the end of your rental term.

Staff will attempt to contact you by phone and/or email to request that you pick up your belongings.

All gym bags/knapsacks must be stored in lockers prior to entering any of the activity areas. Day lockers and coin lockers are for one day use only. Locks and contents will be removed at closing and a $5 administrative fee will be charged to retrieve your belongings. Locks are not supplied for day use lockers; however, coin lockers are available.

NOTE: Parents with children of the opposite sex must use the family change room. Personal items should not be left in the changeroom cubicles.

Helpful information for membersConducting personal businessConducting or soliciting for any form of business within the facility (e.g., private lessons, personal training, sales) is strictly prohibited.

Risks involved in activityParticipating in physical activity has many inherent risks including, but not limited to, personal injury. Prior to registering for a membership or program, it is recommended that you consult your physician if you have any medical concerns. The Department of Athletics and Recreation requires all members and program participants to read and sign a release of liability, waiver of claims and indemnity agreement at the time of registration.

Injuries Please report any injuries to the Central Equipment Room staff or ask for assistance.

Please ensure that The Zone and Rowing Centre weights are placed on the floor safely (not dropped). Spitting, foul language, grunting, use of chalk and monopolizing the use of equipment is considered unacceptable conduct and may result in loss of privileges.

Lost and foundItems of value are sent to the Campus Security office (x4300). Student I.D. cards are sent to the Brock One Card office located in Guernsey Market. All other items will be held at the Central Equipment Room for two weeks (x3377).

ParkingCommunity and alumni Walker Complex members may purchase a special parking permit for Lot B through Athletics and Recreation. Community and alumni program registrants (e.g., swimming lessons) may purchase a 10-punch parking pass for Lot D. NOTE: Parking is monitored and tickets are issued for violations. These permits are not available to Brock students, faculty or staff.

Please report broken or unsafe equipment to a facility supervisor at the central equipment room.

Security camerasThe Walker Complex is monitored by surveillance cameras that record 24 hours per day. Tapes are reviewed when it is deemed necessary.

Photography/VideographyFor the protection of all guests at the Walker Complex, the use of photographic equipment, including cellphones with photographic capabilities, is strictly prohibited in the locker rooms. Use of photographic equipment in other areas of the Walker Complex requires departmental and participant permission.

DefibrillatorPublic access automated external defibrillators (AED) are located to the left of the entrance to the locker rooms and outside of Ian Beddis Court 4 in the Walker Complex. All facility supervisors and aquatic supervisors are trained to use the AED.

Swimming poolBe sure to take advantage of Brock’s 50 metre pool (no charge for Brock students)! Weekly schedules are available online at brocku.ca/recreation-services/aquatics.• A wristband will be issued for entry to

the pool.• Anyone using the swimming pool

or whirlpool is required under the Ontario Public Health Act to take a shower and rinse thoroughly before entering or re-entering the pool.

• Anyone using the swimming pool must wear a bathing suit or modesty bathing attire. T-shirts and cut-off shorts are not permitted.

• A child admission procedure is in effect for children nine and under. Please visit

brocku.ca/recreation-services/aquatics for details.

Annual pool and whirlpool maintenance shutdownDuring our annual maintenance shutdown, the 200 m track and The Zone are made available to pool members. Credits or extensions will not be issued for the shutdown period.

StudiosThe fitness and dance studios are multi-purpose rooms with hardwood floors and full length mirrors. When not in use for academic classes, varsity practices and scheduled programs, the studios are available for appropriate indoor activities.

Staff membersAll staff members who work for the Department of Athletics and Recreation at the Central Equipment Room, Welcome Desk, The Zone and pool, have first aid/CPR certification as well as certification/training required for their job. Supervisors have Automated External Defibrillation certification.

Bottle filling stationsThirsty? The Walker Complex has four water bottle filling stations. Two beside the Central Equipment Room, one in the Zone and one in the hallway near the Welcome Desk.

Facility maintenance and special event bookingsOn occasion, certain facilities may not be available due to maintenance or special events. Athletics and Recreation will provide notice whenever possible, but memberships will not be extended.

The Zone (Fitness Centre)The Zone contains state of the art strength training and cardio equipment. It is staffed at all times by Certified Personal Trainers.

TrackThe 200 metre indoor walking/jogging track is located above the Ian Beddis gymnasium with a view to the outdoors.

Squash and outdoor tennisTake advantage of our year-round squash and seasonal tennis courts. Reservations can be made up to one week in advance at the Central Equipment Room or by phone at x3377. Squash and tennis have priority over other activities on the respective courts.

Sauna and whirlpool Relax in one of our dry saunas located in the men’s and women’s locker rooms, or take a few minutes to soak in the coed whirlpool located on the pool deck.

GymsBrock has three gymnasia located in the Walker Complex that can be used for casual recreation and appropriate indoor activities when available. Schedules are available at brocku.ca/recreation-services

Free beginner fitness orientationA free one-on-one hour long orientation session per year is included with each Zone membership and is provided by a Certified Personal Trainer.
