Welcome!Dear participants at the 2011 Conference of the IIEMCA, To begin with, a very warm welcome to Fribourg from all of the conference staff! Over the next few days you have a very busy and interesting academic schedule to look forward to. During the conference, however, you may also have some more practical questions or issues to deal with. For all of these matters, the conference staff are here to help you! You will see many of us around the University during the conference, either at the front desk, or perhaps dealing with technological matters during the plenary and panel sessions. So, if at any point you have a question, a concern, or a query, please dont hesitate to ask any member of the team who will do their best to point you in the right direction. The team all speak English (and many other languages between them) so feel completely free to come and discuss with us at any point. We all look forward to meeting you and to ensuring that you have a pleasant and rewarding stay here with us in Fribourg!Emily (head of conference staff) and the rest of the team: Aline, Alexandra, Cllia, Emmanuele, Lidwine, Loc, Maren, Yannick

Reaching the conference venue from Fribourg train station:By bus Three bus lines run between the train station and the conference venue: No. 1 (direction Prolles/Marly), No. 3 (direction Prolles) and No. 7 (direction Cliniques). They depart from bus stop number 2 just outside the main station exit. The bus stop closest to the venue is Charmettes. After getting off the bus at this stop, cross Boulevard de Prolles and make your way to buildings 21-22, which will be in front of you on the left. On foot The University of Fribourg-Prolles II campus is about a 15-minute walk from the train station. Just follow Boulevard de Prolles from the train station to the roundabout in the Prolles area where buildings 21-22 are located. By taxi or car Taxis are available at the train station. The fare to the conference location is about CHF 15.00. As no official parking area is available, we dont recommend that you come by car. If however you do opt to drive to the venue, you should first head for the city centre and the train station, and then follow signs to Boulevard de Prolles.

5. HOW TO GET A BUS TICKETUnlike on some bus networks, Fribourg bus tickets cant be purchased on the bus itself. You must buy your ticket from one of the ticket machines or at the TPF (Transports Publics Fribourgeois) counter inside the train station next to the store Aperto.

To buy a ticket from one of the ticket machines:First, enter the number 10, which corresponds to the Fribourg conurbation. Next, choose either a short-trip or long-trip ticket: 1 to 6 stops (including the station at which you exit): CHF 2.40, valid for 30 minutes. 7 or more stops: CHF 2.90, valid for 60 minutes. To reach the conference venue from the train station, you will need a short-trip ticket (1 to 6 stops). You may pay using coins, but note that the machine doesnt return change. You may also buy a prepaid TPF card in the kiosks or at the TPF counter in the train station. For more information on the public transport system of the city of Fribourg: http://www.tpf.ch/ We are proud to count the Transports Publics Fribourgeois among the conference sponsors.

8. GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTERS AND SESSION CHAIRSWe kindly request that you stick strictly to the program, start on time and conclude punctually. Within each slot (30 minutes), the presentation should last 20 minutes and the last 10 minutes should be dedicated to discussion. Please dont exceed either the presentation length of 20 minutes or the 30 minutes scheduled for each slot, so that the audience will be able to switch rooms between two papers if necessary. Within each Panel/Individual Papers session, the order of the presentations is fixed and should not be modified. In case of last minute drop-outs, please do not proceed to the next paper but rather use the empty slot for a discussion. Each room is equipped with a video projector/beamer, loudspeakers and an overhead projector. Please note that presenters should bring their own laptops (PC/Windows or Apple/Mac). If you are a Mac user, please do not forget to bring along your VGA adaptor! For information on electrical current and plug/sockets models in Switzerland: http://electricaloutlet.org/. You may want to bring along adapters in case your technical devices require different voltage, plugs or sockets. All sockets at the University classroom are of the Type J Swiss 3-pin (see picture on the right hand side). We highly recommend that you run a short test presentation before your panel or session starts or during coffee/lunch breaks. If you have a problem or question concerning the media equipment, please contact the staff member who will stay in your room during the whole panel/session. You should bring along enough handouts. The staff will not be able to provide you with copies. There are several printers/photocopiers in the building (see point 11 below). There are also several copy centers in the vicinity of the campus - one in front of the bus stop Charmettes - as well as in the city center.

18. SIGHTSEEING IN FRIBOURGFribourg is a city of around 40,000 inhabitants located 32 kilometers (about 20 miles) from Bern, Switzerlands capital. With its position on the cultural border between the German-speaking and French-speaking regions of Switzerland, it is naturally a bilingual city. Fribourg has preserved a medieval character unlike that of any other European city, with its beautiful Old Town area on the banks of the Sarine River. Among the attractions are the Saint Nicholas Cathedral and other magnificent churches, bridges, fountains, and the ruins of the old city wall. Fribourg also offers several museums, including the Museum of Art and History and the Jean Tinguely-Niki de Saint Phalle center. Fribourg is also known as a prime location for sampling some of Switzerlands best food and wine. Cultural destinations in the Fribourg region include Avenches, Bern, Estavayer-le-Lac, Gruyres and Morat, while places such as Charmey and Schwarzsee offer possibilities for extraordinary outdoor activities.
