Ebony is one of the most intensely blackwoods known, fine texture, and ability to polish very smoothly, has made it very valuable as an ornamental wood.

Rosewood refers to any of a number of richly hued tim-bers, often brownish with darker veining. All rosewoods are strong and heavy, taking an excellent polish.

The European Black Pine (Pinus nigra) wood is modera-tely hard and straight-grained. It does however tend to be rougher and softer.

Bone or even Ivory are both natural materials. They are actually used to craft numerous items.

Owing to the relatively high density of the wood (it is one of the few woods that are denser than water), Boxwood is a common material for the manufacture of recorders.

Because of its rot resistance, Juniper fine-grained (brittle pinkish- to brownish-red heartwood) is fragrant, very light and very durable, even in contact with soil.
