The PIAB mission is to be a global leader in industrial vacuum technology and, with innovative solutions, improve the productivity and working environment of vacuum users around the world.

PIAB was founded in 1951, and since then we have been in the forefront of vacuum technology, leading the way to new innovative solutions. The products and systems we develop are always at the cutting edge of technology. Marketed around the world, these products are used mainly in automated material handling and factory automation processes.

In 1972 PIAB introduced the patented multistage ejector that still is the guiding-star for many companies in the industry.

The first PIAB product was a pair of compasses that simplified the work of designers and draftsmen. This pair of compasses has given the company its name, Pi (=3.14) AB.

Welcome!

PIAB’s latest patent: The COAX™ technology – a further development of the multistage ejector principle that offers new possibilities of customization and integration, etc.

The first USDA accepted pneumatic vacuum conveyor was launched in the year 2000. The conveyor meets the requirements of the food industry.

DURAFLEXTM — for increased productivity and performance

Increase your productivity and security with DURAFLEX™, a strong and elastic material with excellent sealing capability. High friction and reduced micro-leakage increase the lifting capability and the cup’s outstanding wear resistance extends the change-over intervals. PIAB’s unique dual-hardness cups are ideally suited for applications where micro-leakage can occur, for example when a suction cup does not properly conform to a handled material, such as corrugated cardboard. Dual-hardness cups provide both the strength and flexibility needed to seal on uneven or coarse surfaces.

PIAB’s suction cups increase your productivity

For better economyPIAB’s new suction cups are made of an extremely elastic and resilient material that has excellent sealing capacity which minimizes leakage between the suction cup and the object that is handled. This means that you can use a smaller vacuum pump or, as an alternative, lower the feed pressure of the pump you are using, which in turn means lower energy costs.Lower energy consumption contributes to increased productivity.

For better operational reliabilitySuction cups from PIAB are known for their high wear resistance. PIAB’s new suction cups have now become even more wear resistant. Suction cups with high wear resistance guarantee a long life, while the risk of unplanned stoppages of the production is lowered. High reliability without any unplanned production stoppages increases your productivity.

For higher efficiencyMaterial with high friction improves the gripping capability and the holding power of all suction cup models. As a result of this, it is possible to increase the speed of the handling process and thus shorten the work cycles.Shorter work cycles give bigger volumes and higher productivity in your manufacturing processes.

You can grip almost everything...

Do you need to handle fragile, cumbersome, compact or porous objects with flat, round, angled, dome-shaped or uneven surfaces in a smooth and careful manner? If so, suction cups are your best choice.Suction cups lift all kinds of products and materials carefully, smoothly and safely, whether they weigh only a few grams or several hundred kilograms.

Vacuum creates possibilitiesDespite its name the suction cup does not suck onto an object. Instead it is pressed against it when the pressure between the suction cup and the surface of the object is lower than the surrounding pressure — the atmospheric pressure. In order to create a lower pressure in the suction cup (under-pressure), it is connected to a source of vacuum. The lower the under-pressure, the larger external force that presses the suction cup against the object. Increased lifting force is the result.

You can rely on PIABUsing suction cups is a lifting technique of many possibilities. You can, for example, handle board materials or concrete slabs, open bags, pick electronic components, label and hold objects. But different applications need different requirements.PIAB offers one of the market’s widest ranges of suction cups so that each application will have its own solution. You are welcome to tell us about your needs. We are your partner whatever your needs might be.

Almost everything is possible with the right suction cup

Do you need to handle rough surfaces?

Are the objects oblong?

Are there corners or edges on the objects?

Is the material sensitive to static electricity?

Is there a requirement for mark-free suction cups?

HOW TO CHOOSE CORRECT SUCTION CUP

Suction cups are suitable for lifting, moving, positioning, holding and even separating objects. Fields of application can be found in, for example, the packaging industry, automotive industry, graphic industry, wood working industry, electronic and semiconductor industries, etc.In all industries and fields of application the requirements on suction cups are different.

Among other parameters, think of the following when choosing suction cups:

Conditions Suction cup parameters

Shape and surface of the object to be handled Suction cup model, number of suction cups

Vertical forces in relation to the weight of the object Dimension of suction cup(s)

Horizontal forces due to movements in the handling Dimension of suction cup(s), high friction

Breakage forces due to dynamic loads when an object is handled Number of suction cups

Requirements of good grip (high friction) Suction cup material, cleats in suction cups

Environmental requirements Suction cup material

Temperature requirements Suction cup material

Requirements for mark-free handling Suction cup material

Thin objects may not be deformed Cleats/supports in suction cups

Connection to equipment used Type of suction cup fitting

Particles that may be sucked into the system Filter in fitting and/or suction cup

Suction cups applied outside of the object that is handled Valve in suction cup

Besides these suction cup parameters one should also think of accessories that might improve the reli -ability and the functionality of the system, such as fittings with springs and ball joints.

FittingsYou can choose from a complete range of threaded connec-tions from M2.5 to G 3/4” depending on the size and model of the suction cup. For suction cups that are Ø20–25 mm there is a multi -connection that can be used as an alterna-tive. The fittings are made of aluminium. Several versions are fitted with a filter of steel to prevent small particles from being sucked into the system.Certain suction cups are complete with moulded fittings.

Valve systemsCone valvePIAB’s fittings with built-in cone valve eliminate leakage that occurs when the suction cup is not in contact with the object being handled. Fittings with cone valve are available for suction cups that are Ø30 mm and larger. This valve is best suited for non-porous materials.

Dual flow control valveFittings with dual flow control valves limit the leakage that occurs when the suction cup is not in contact with the object. Built-in dual flow control val-ves are available for all suction cups that are from 20 to 50 mm in diameter. They are used only when lifting sealing materials. The atmospheric pressure is quickly restored via the clack valve when the work cycle is completed.

(a) The air that is sucked up by the pump can flow only through a small opening (the restriction). Even if the suction cup should be placed outside of the object, the leakage will be minimal and will not disturb the system to any larger extent.

(b) When the suction cup contacts the object, only its own volume needs to be evacuated, and vacuum is therefore quickly created.

(c) When the object is to be released and the vacuum to be turned off, the built- in clack valve opens automatically so that air can flow out through a larger opening, thus releasing the object very quickly.

When the suction cup contacts the object, the cone valve closes the opening in the fitting and eliminates the risk of leakage.

The cone valve opens only when the suction cup is pressed against the object.

The best guarantee of good reliability in a suction cup system is to make certain that the suction cup connec-tion is adapted to its application. Here we present some different connection accessories that will cover most situations.

Accessories

Level compensator

A level compensator is used to compensate level differences, especially when multiple suction cups are mounted in a rigid frame. When a suction cup is used in a handling robot or a similar device, it is an advantage to use level compensators, as this means that the requirements of precise height positioning does not need to be so strict. This resilience also has a certain amount of damping effect.

Ball joint

When heavy objects are to be handled, breaking forces can easily occur in the suction cup. In order to avoid this from occurring, the suction cup can be fitted with a ball joint. When lifting large metal sheets by using a certain number of suction cups, it is often necessary to use ball joints in order for the suction cups to be able to adjust themselves to the sheet’s deflection, which is caused by the sheet’s own weight.

Angle adapter

An angle adapter facilitates the connection of vacuum when there is limited space and where the available height is limited. The angle adapter can be used even for T-connections in order to connect multiple suction cups in a system.
