Che cos’è il Meeting
É la fine degli anni ’70. Tra alcuni amici di Rimini, che condividono l’esperienza cristiana, nasce il desiderio di incontrare, conoscere e portare a Rimini tutto quello che di bello e buono c’è nella cultura del tempo. Così ha origine il Meeting per l’amicizia fra i popoli nel 1980. Un incontro tra persone di fede e culture diverse. Un luogo di amicizia dove si possa costruire la pace, la convivenza e l’amicizia fra i popoli. Una trama di incontri che nascono da persone che mettono in comune una tensione al vero, al bene, al bello.
Da allora ogni anno arrivano grandi personaggi della politica, manager dell’economia, rappresentanti di religioni e culture, intellettuali e artisti, sportivi e protagonisti dello scenario mondiale. Storie di uomini al centro di incontri, mostre, spettacoli e eventi sportivi. La cultura al Meeting si esprime come esperienza, originata dal desiderio di scoprire la bellezza della realtà. Tutto questo nei sette giorni dell’appuntamento che è diventato negli anni il festival culturale più frequentato al mondo.
Nell’ultima settimana d’agosto Rimini diventa la capitale della cultura internazionale e viene invasa da “il popolo del Meeting”, come è stato definito dai media: gente curiosa, aperta, capace di giudizio, proveniente da tutto il mondo per questo evento che si ripete da oltre trent’anni.
Sin dalla sua origine il Meeting ha scommesso sul desiderio e la passione che ogni uomo ha nel proprio cuore, quel desiderio di bellezza, verità, giustizia che don Luigi Giussani, fondatore del movimento di Comunione e Liberazione, ha chiamato esperienza elementare, terreno comune per l’incontro e il dialogo.

I volontari, il cuore del Meeting
Per ogni edizione, dall’Italia e da ogni parte del mondo, arrivano a Rimini migliaia di volontari che, pagandosi viaggio e alloggio, organizzano, allestiscono, gestiscono e poi smontano il Meeting. Una testimonianza vivente di come la gratuità sia un valore possibile e sperimentabile; la bellezza di uomini che gratuitamente si spendono per fare esperienza della verità e renderle testimonianza.
Una identità certa, una apertura infinita
Questa posizione umana e culturale è il punto di partenza per uno sguardo rivolto a tutto il mondo. Il Meeting è un luogo dove è possibile la valorizzazione reciproca, dove la differenza dell’altro è una provocazione positiva, un aiuto a scoprire la verità corrispondente alle esigenze dell’uomo. Per questo ogni anno partecipano ebrei, buddisti, atei, ortodossi, musulmani.
Temi trasversali, in rapporto con il mondo
Ogni anno, attorno a un titolo, si parla di economia, arte, letteratura, scienza, politica, problemi sociali, musica di ogni genere. Una curiosità e trasversalità unica al mondo. Per 30 anni associazione privata, ora fondazione, ogni anno il Meeting dialoga con istituzioni, rappresentanze diplomatiche, enti pubblici e privati.
I grandi numeri
Ad ogni edizione 800.000 presenze, 20 nazionalità presenti, 4.000 volontari, 130 incontri, 250 relatori, 8 mostre, 35 spettacoli, 10 eventi sportivi, 170.000 mq allestiti, 1.000 operatori dell’informazione accreditati, oltre 200 partner e sponsor.
What is the Rimini Meeting?
It is the end of the seventies. Among some friends from Rimini who share a Christian experience, a desire is born to meet, get to know, and bring to Rimini everything good and beautiful that is present in the culture of those times. This is how the Meeting for the Friendship Amongst Peoples was born in 1980. An encounter among persons of different faiths and cultures. A place for friendship where peace, socialization, and a friendship among peoples may be established. These are encounters born from people that share a tension towards what is true, good, and beautiful.
Since then every year great political personalities, managers, representatives of different religions and cultures, intellectuals and artists, athletes and protagonists of the world scene visit it. It offers stories of men and women through conferences, exhibitions, shows, and sporting events. At The Rimini Meeting, culture expresses itself as an experience, originated by the desire to discover the beauty of reality. All of this happens in the seven days during which the world’s most attended cultural festival takes place.
During the last week of August, Rimini becomes the international capital of culture and gets invaded by “the people of the Meeting,” as the media described it: people that are curious, open, able to judge, come from all over the world for this event that takes place every year since more than thirty years.
Since the beginning, the Meeting has bet on the desire and the passion that each man has in his own heart, the desire for beauty, truth, and justice that Father Luigi Giussani, founder of the movement Communion and Liberation, has called elementary experience, common ground for encounter and dialogue.

Volunteers: the heart of the Meeting
For each edition thousands of volunteers go to Rimini from Italy and from all over the world; they pay for their own trip and lodging, and organize, stage, manage, and dismantle the Meeting. A living witness of how gratuitousness is a possible and testable value; the beauty of people that freely offer their work in order to live the experience of truth and to give witness to it.
A certain identity, an infinite openness
This human and cultural position is the starting point for a gaze towards the whole world. The Meeting is a place where it is possible to value each other, where the other’s differences are a positive provocation, a help to discover the truth that corresponds to the human needs. For this reason every year Jews, Buddhists, atheists, Orthodox, and Muslims attend it.
All-encompassing themes, in relationship with the world
Each year, starting from a particular title, we speak about economy, art, literature, science, politics, social affairs, and different kinds of music. A unique curiosity and openness. For thirty years a association, now a foundation, every year the Meeting dialogues with institutions, diplomatic delegations, public and private corporation.

La prima edizione del Meeting, svoltasi nel 1980, fu organizzata da un comitato promotore che già l’8 dicembre del 1980 si costituì in associazione. La stessa fu riconosciuta con decreto del Presidente della Repubblica n. 869 del 6 agosto del 1986, per trasformarsi poi nel 2008 nella fondazione Meeting per l’amicizia fra i popoli, l’ente che attualmente organizza ogni anno la manifestazione.

The first edition of the Meeting, which took place in 1980, was organized by a promoting committee that constituted into an association on December 8, 1980. It was recognized by the decree of the President of the Republic No. 869 of August 6, 1986; in 2008 it became the Foundation Meeting For Friendship Amongst Peoples that is the institution which organizes the festival every year.

Collaborazioni con l’esteroSin dalla sua origine il Meeting ha girato il mondo per raccontare la sua esperienza: Parigi (Unesco), Vienna, Mosca, Berlino, Budapest, Novasibirsk, Bruxelles, Madrid, New York, Washington, San Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte.
Nel 2010, inoltre, si è svolto il primo Meeting Cairo in Egitto dal 28 al 29 ottobre. Alcune personalità musulmane egiziane avendo partecipato al Meeting di Rimini ne erano rimaste colpite desiderando proporre la stessa esperienza nella loro terra d’Egitto. Tema: “La bellezza, lo spazio per il dialogo”. L’iniziativa ha avuto un successo inaspettato: 150 volontari, cristiani e musulmani, che hanno offerto gratuitamente il loro lavoro, oltre 1000 persone presenti alla serata inaugurale presso la Cairo University, centinaia di persone il giorno successivo che hanno seguito gli incontri e le mostre in programma. La stampa egiziana ha definito l’evento come “un possibile inizio di un nuovo protagonismo della società civile”.

Moreover, in 2010 the first Cairo Meeting took place in Egypt from October 28 to 29. Some Egyptian Muslim personalities had attended the Rimini Meeting and had been struck by it and desired to propose the same experience in their own country, Egypt. Title: “Beauty: The Space of Dialogue.” The event had an unexpected success: 150 volunteers, Christians and Muslims, who have freely offered their work; more than 100 persons attending the inaugural evening at the Cairo University; on the following day hundreds of people attended the scheduled conferences and exhibitions. The Egyptian press defined the event as “a possible beginning for the society to be a protagonist.”

Grandi MostreDopo il felice tentativo del 1985 “Gli Atzechi e le loro radici”, dal 1992 si susseguono importanti e prestigiose esposizioni, le cosiddette “grandi mostre”, che diventano patrimonio culturale importante anche per la città di Rimini.
Queste esposizioni, realizzate in una sede diversa da quella in cui si svolge il Meeting, vengono allestite per periodi più lunghi della manifestazione. Si tratta in genere di eventi di eccellenza nel campo dell’archeologia o delle arti figurative. Si caratterizzano per un percorso culturale originale e stimolante, per l’alto livello dei comitati scientifici e per la quantità e spesso eccezionalità delle opere e dei reperti.
In questi anni, collaborando con i principali musei di tutto il mondo, il Meeting ha proposto 22 grandi mostre che hanno accolto complessivamente oltre 1 milione di visitatori.
Great exhibitionsAfter the successful attempt of “The Aztecs and Their Roots” in 1985, since 1992 important and prestigious exhibitions, the so-called “Great Exhibitions,” have been following each other and have become an important cultural patrimony also for the city of Rimini.
These exhibitions, realized at a different location than where the Meeting takes place, are displayed for longer periods than the length of the Meeting itself. They are generally excellent events in the archeological field or in the figurative arts field. They are characterized by an original and stimulating cultural path, by the high level of the scientific committee, and by the quantity and—often—the exceptionality of the works of art and of the archeological finds.
In these years, in collaboration with the main museums of the world, the Meeting proposed 22 great exhibitions that have been visited by 1 million people as a whole.
Una menzione a parte merita la mostra proposta nel 1996 con il titolo “Dalla terra alla genti”; a tema le origini del cristianesimo e la storicità dei vangeli. Due temi che il Meeting ha sempre avuto cari e che hanno raggiunto la massima espressione con questa rassegna archeologica dedicata al sorgere e al diffondersi del Cristianesimo nei primi secoli. Dal 31 marzo 1996 al 6 gennaio 1997 si è realizzata una mostra che ha fatto storia, portando in Italia per la prima volta i frammenti di Qumran. L’esposizione riminese si è conclusa con l’eccezionale traguardo di 100.000 visitatori. La versione itinerante della mostra è stata esposta in decine di città italiane e del mondo, da Minsk a Kampala, da Buenos Aires a Taiwan, toccando i cinque continenti.
The exhibition proposed in 1996 entitled “From the Earth to the Nations” deserves a special mention; its subject was the origin of Christianity and the historical authenticity of the Gospels. Two subjects dear to the Meeting and that were deeply studied with this archeological exhibition shedding light on the origin of Christianity and its dissemination in the first centuries. From March 31, 1996 to January 6, 1997 this historical exhibition was displayed that brought to Italy fragments of the Qumran Gospels for the first time. The exhibition in Rimini ended up with the exceptional result of 100,000 visitors. The touring version of the exhibition has been displayed in dozens of Italian towns and around the world, from Minsk to Kampala, from Buenos Aires to Taiwan, touching six continents.
