THE DOUBLE EXPANDING GATE VALVES OPERATING PRINCIPLE:
The stem drives only the “female “wedge segment at all times via a precision “T” head dive connection, the male segment is permanently attached to the female
segment by the centralizer mechanism which ensures the wedge segments are fully contracted during cycling while permitting the female to develop the
expanding capability. The male and female wedge segments are also mechanically aligned by the centralizing components. The closure member segments expand
in the open and closed positions via the open/closed slopes between each wedge segment, this enables the valves to seal in both directions. While in the open
or closed position, the valve cavity is also isolated.
GATE IN THE FULLY CLOSED POSITION
The “male” wedge segments inertia is first to stop once contact is made with the body’s integral stop. The “Female” wedge segment continues to run along the
wedge close slope and a mechanically dependent expansion of the closure member results, simultaneously sealing upstream and downstream.
GATE IN FULLY OPEN POSITION
A full expansion occurs at the full open position and the backseat is energized. Consequently the body cavity is isolated from both the upstream and downstream
side. The primary seat sealing surfaces are protected by the expansion that occurs in the full open position. This factor makes this valve ideal choice for pig-
ging applications where high integrity isolation on a long term basis is a must.
GATE IN RUNNING STROKE
From the fully closed position or the fully open position, once the closure member is mobilized by the cycling valve, the centralizing mechanism pulls the wedge
segments together to develop a clearance between the primary seal faces in order to minimize the potential for wear on these critical surfaces at all times dur-
ing every cycle. This thereby extends the life expectancy of primary seals.

You will note a solid forged female wedge segment lapped and polished to
provide the cavity sealing function. The engineers’ reflection on the close
slope demonstrates our attention to detail. PetrolValves does not employ cast
wedge segments and both wedge slopes open and closed are completely
carbide hard faced using HVOF technology. Petrolvalves wedge segments
have no integral stop built on which can influence negatively the valves
sealing integrity. All stops are integral to the body and bonnet.

The Stem drives only the female wedge segment at all times via a typical T Head drive mechanism,
the male segment is permanently attached to the female segment by two casehardened
shoulder bolts acting as guide pins which allow the male segment to float up or down against the
female to develop the expanding capability. The male and female wedge segments are also
mechanically retained at the lower toe end of the closure member assembly and this acts as a limit
stop controlling the centralizing mechanism when the closure member expands, the same
mechanical preload is discharged as soon as the valve starts its cycle from closed to open, thereby
dramatically reducing friction between the primary sealing surfaces during each and every cycle.

GATE IN FULLY CLOSED POSITION
• The stem pushes downward on the Female wedge segment, the Male simultaneously follows.
• The Male wedge segments’ inertia is first to stop once contact is made with the body’s integral stop
provided in trim material and located on the bottom of the body.
• The Female wedge segment continues to travel along the wedge slope and an expansion of the
closure member segments occurs and results in a simultaneous upstream and downstream seal
seating.
GATE IN FULLY OPEN POSITION
• No expansion occurs at the full open position. The stem backseat seal can be energized if needed.
GATE IN RUNNING STROKE
• From the closed position, as soon as the stem “T” head begins to lift the female wedge segment, the
mechanical preload stored in the centralizing mechanism discharges to centralize the wedge
segments and thereby contracts them to develop a clearance between the primary seal faces in order
to minimize the potential for wear on these critical surfaces as the valve cycles.
