    COURSEGeneral English students are encouraged to develop theirbasic knowledge of the English language and the skillsneeded to use English in a global environment. Carrickteachers use examination and practical communicationactivities to prepare students to use the English language inreal world situations.

    Carricks General English program offers six levels ofEnglish, from Beginner to Advanced. Generally, all GeneralEnglish courses are 12 weeks with each level speci callydesigned to take students one step closer to their goal ofbeing uent in English. Each students individual Englishlevel is assessed when they enrol, ensuring that they areplaced at the correct level.

    Carrick offers its General English students a range ofclasses and activities so they can tailor a course to theirneeds and learning style. General English students alsohave the option to study an elective of their choice. Electivesmay include grammar, study skills, Australian idioms andslang, multimedia, pronunciation and more.

    ASSESSMENT Carricks students speak directly to their teachers, whodevelop a plan to improve their level of English. Our quali edteachers regularly assess each students English languageskills to ensure they are on track to achieving their goals.Students take regular assessment in the skills of reading,writing, listening and speaking.

    MATERIALS Teachers in Carricks General English Program useresources that are both informative and engaging. Allmaterials are up-to-date, relevant and include real-lifelistening and reading, communication activities, DVDs andmultimedia.

    The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course prepares students withthe English language skills they need to excel in the Australian academicenvironment. Students will gain the con dence and skills in applying theEnglish language to their higher education studies.

    CoursesENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)

    COURSECarricks EAP program is speci cally designed to givestudents the English language skills they need to besuccessful in an academic environment. Experiencedteachers assist students in gaining a thorough

    understanding and knowledge of the academic culture,expectations and assessment methods of westerneducational institutions.

    Carricks EAP Program has two distinct levels: EAP 1, whichprepares students for vocational courses of study and EAP2, which prepares students for university courses. Eachcourse runs for 10 weeks.

    Students who successfully complete Carricks EAP courseare equipped with the skills required to gain entry into manyof Australias leading universities.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTSEntry to EAP 1 requires an IELTS level of 5.0 or equivalent.EAP 2 requires an IELTS level of 5.5 or equivalent or thesuccessful completion of EAP 1.

    ASSESSMENT Carricks EAP assessment tasks prepare students for theassessment requirements of their future course of study.Students have ongoing academic assessments to preparethem for their university studies, including academic essaywriting, research projects, presentations and examinations.

    MATERIALS Teachers in Carricks EAP course use materials that are bothinformative and relevant to the students future study needs,such as real-life listening and reading, communicationactivities, DVDs and multimedia.

    CoursesFIRST CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH (FCE)

    COURSE The First Certi cate in English (FCE) is a course whichaims to prepare students for the internationally recognisedCambridge examinations. It provides the necessaryfoundation skills for students to build con dence andaccuracy in English prior to sitting the examination.

    Many students enrol in our General English programbefore entering the FCE course to ensure their Englishlanguage is adequate. Carricks teachers prepare studentsfor the examinations, which are held three times eachyear. It is optional for students to sit the test, which costsapproximately $345.     ENTRY REQUIREMENTSEntry requires a minimum IELTS level of 5.0 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT Student progress is regularly monitored through task-based assessment and progress checks. At the end of theprogram, all students are awarded a Carrick Certi cate of

    Attendance and an Achievement Report which indicates thecompletion level.

    MATERIALSStudents are guided through the use of class texts andthe extensive use of materials. It is required that all Englishlanguage students purchase the prescribed textbook,which costs under A$100.

    The English for Vocational Education (EVE) course prepares students forstudy in a vocational course. Particular emphasis is placed on developingthe English skills necessary for students to successfully complete alltasks in their chosen vocational program. EVE also builds studentscon dence and accuracy in the use of English.

    COURSE The English for Vocational Education (EVE) course is

    speci cally designed to give students the English languageand study skills they need to be successful in their futurevocational course. Students will learn from real-life examplesof reading and listening as well as authentic writing andspeaking tasks. They are also encouraged to becomeindependent and active learners through activities insideand outside the classroom environment.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTSStudents are required to have an IELTS level of 5.0 orequivalent for entry into this course. Successful studentsgain direct access into vocational courses at CarrickInstitute of Education and receive a certi cate on completionof this course.

    ASSESSMENT Skill areas assessed include reading, writing, listening,oral presentation and vocabulary. Students are assessedon a weekly basis and provided with feedback on theirprogress. Tasks include oral presentations, job applications,PowerPoint presentations, summarising and othervocational preparation assessments.

    MATERIALSCarricks EVE students will require an exclusive and unique

    course book designed speci cally to prepare students for Australian vocational education courses. All students arerequired to purchase the course book which costs lessthan A$100.

    The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is aninternationally recognised examination that helps students gain entry intotertiary courses and progress in their careers. Carrick English LanguagesIELTS Preparation course focuses directly on the skills students need tobe successful in the IELTS examination.

    COURSE To gain the best possible result in the IELTS examination,students develop the four key skill areas in English: reading,writing, listening and speaking. Carricks experiencedteachers will also help students build con dence in dealingwith the examination.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTS The IELTS Preparation course is designed for studentsaiming for an IELTS score of 5.5 and above. An IELTS levelof 5.0 or equivalent is required for entry. However, studentscan enroll in a General English course rst if their Englishlevel is lower than an IELTS score of 5.5.

    ASSESSMENT Students sit a daily assessment based on IELTS practicetest materials, which assess all four skills areas. Carrickstudents receive regular feedback on their progress fromhighly quali ed and experienced teachers.

    MATERIALSMaterials are speci cally chosen to develop the studentslanguage skills and prepare them for the IELTS examination.

    CoursesHIGH SCHOOL PREPARATION (HSP)

    The High School Preparation course meets the needs of young studentspreparing to enter an Australian High School. We offer students a safeand secure environment and provide classrooms where their Englishlanguage, personal and social needs are always met.

    START DATE: Every MondayDURATION : From 20 to 40 weeks (CRICOS 46 weeks)

    AVERAGE CLASS SIZE: 14 studentsBOOKS AND MATERIALS : Under AUS$100LOCATION: Melbourne

    COURSE STRUCTUREStudents may choose to study 20, 30 or 40 weeks in orderto acquire the necessary English for successful study inthe key curriculum areas of mathematics, science, socialstudies and information technology. Students are taughtmeta-skills such as research, study skills and collaborativelearning techniques. This, combined with a regularhomework program, means students are prepared to notonly enter an Australian High School but to excel there.

    Students are encouraged to participate in a weekly sportsprogram and various social programs organised by theinstitute as well as computer sessions in one of CarricksResource Centres.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTSEntry requires a minimum IELTS level of 4.5 or equivalent.

    AUSTRALIAN HIGH SCHOOL PREPARATION The High School Preparation (HSP) program prepares youacademically and socially to join the Australian high schoolsystem from Year 11 onward and encourages focusedautonomous learning. We take care to develop close ties

    with receiving schools and our HSP teachers will personallyintroduce you to your new school environment.

    This program is recognised by many Australian private andgovernment high schools.

    ASSESSMENT Assessment for the course is conducted both formally andinformally. Your participation and effort in class, abilityto complete the set homework tasks, and independentstudy skills are constantly observed and assessed.

    On successful completion of the program you will receivea Certi cate of Participation and a report of your level ofability, noting any areas requiring attention.

    MATERIALS You will be guided through resources including class textsand other print resources, videos, CD-ROMs and internet-based resources. It is required that all students purchasethe prescribed textbook, which costs under A$100.

Experiencedteachers assist students to gain a thorough understandingand knowledge of the nursing profession, expectationsand assessment methods of western health systemsand cultures.

    Carricks English for Nursing program has the addedadvantage of preparing students to pursue certi cates,diplomas and degrees in the nursing profession. Studentswho successfully complete Carricks English for Nursing areequipped with the skills required to gain entry into many of

    Australias leading Australian universities.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTSEnrolment requires an IELTS level of 6.0 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT Carricks English for Nursing assessment tasks preparestudents for the assessment requirements of their future
