PMA Sindelfingen GmbH (PMA), laboratory physicians Sindelfingen

Due to legal regulations for the determination of alcohol and drugs, respectively their metabolite products for the medical-psychological exami-nation within the diagnostic concerning fitness to drive, a forensic accreditation is compulsory. For this the quality assurance guidelines of the society for toxicological and forensic chemistry have to be observed for a successful validation and acceptation of the German Accreditation body. The PMA has faced up successfully to this analytical challenge in collaboration with the laboratory physicians Sindelfingen.Principle of this examination is the protein pre-cipitation and dilution of the urine samples, a chromatographic separation by means of the HPLC LC20 from Shimadzu as well as a detec-tion with the tandem mass spectrometer 4000 QTrap from AB Sciex, which was purchased from Laborgerätebörse in Burladingen.Here especially the required detection limits for chromatographic, identifying procedures in the context of the assessment of the fitness to

As the determined detection limits are far be-low the required detection limits, and all other quality guidelines are also observed, this me-thod can be used for forensic determination of fitness to drive.

This method was extended to 133 substances for not-forensic samples, for example for sub-stitution patients, which partly cannot be detected in the conventional GC-MS measure-ment. So, amongst others, active ingredients of spice, krypton, LSD and Charge+ are routine-ly determined, furthermore the determination of gamma-hydroxybuyric acid, the so-called knock-out drops, is possible. A measurement of this number of active ingredients happens in 12 minutes and therefore enables a high sample throughput. Finally can be said, that herewith a sensitive and robust method has been develo-ped, that corresponds to the forensic demands of the diagnostics of fitness to drive.

Interview with Sven Biewald, the Marketing and Sales Manager of Labexchange Service GmbH

Editors: Mr. Biewald, the Labexchange Service GmbH exists one and a half year now and thus is relatively young and new on the market. How can you secure a high quality service to your customers after this short time?

Biewald: Of course the company itself is very young, but not the competence behind it.

Editors: How is this to be understood?

Biewald: For several reasons, on the one hand, La-bexchange Service GmbH has resulted from a sec-tion of the Laborgerätebörse GmbH, which exists for more than 23 years. For more than 15 years the devices, that were sold by the Laborgerätebörse, have been tested, repaired and serviced there.

Editors: How did it come to the conclusion to outsource this sector and to establish an inde-pendent company?

Biewald: We have received more and more inquir-ies from customers, who have not bought their equipment from the Laborgerätebörse, and who have asked us to test and repair it. As this would differ too much from the primary concept of the company, the purchase and sale of laboratory and analytical equipment, and it would bring also about a considerably administration effort, it was decided to outsource this sector and to build a discrete and an independent corporation.

We are very interested in all no longer or ne-ver used laboratory and analysis equipment. We will determine the current market value of your equipment. We will directly buy popu-lar models by main manufacturers. All other equipment will be advertised free of charge in our printed and Internet lists.

On request, we can arrange for the installation and explanation of the equipment functions to be carried out by the manufacturer´s custo-mer service department or by an independent service company.

Editors: Ok, and how can I interpret discrete and independent?

Biewald: The Laborgerätebörse GmbH is our par-ent company, partly our eponym and one of our largest customers. All employees know each oth-er very well and the working atmosphere of both companies is excellent. However, in addition, we are working completely separate and independ-ent, quasi for our own account.

Editors: Ok, I understand, this is very interest-ing. Previously you talked about several rea-sons which make it possible for you to offer your customers a high quality service. What are these reasons?

Biewald: In the 23, respectively 15 years existence of the service department, we have socialized with other service companies and partners. Be-cause of this, we have initialized the Labexchange Service network. With more than 200 independ-ent service companies, which cooperate with us or have entered into a direct partnership with us, we have the largest service network in the range of laboratory and analytical equipment in Europe.

Editors: To which extend does this benefit the customer?

Biewald: These discrete cooperation companies consist of qualified and specialized experts, most-ly former employees of the device manufacturers, who have been able to acquire vast know-how in their field.The advantage for our customers is, that we can offer cost-effective services, however, the quality of the work persists.

Editors: This means same quality at lower cost!

Biewald: That’s right. Furthermore we provide a huge spare parts depot of new as well older used devices, we are one of two exclusive suppliers of GS-Tek chromatography columns in Germany, and we also help various manufacturers in the handling of the service when there are problems concerning the capacity.

Editors: This sounds like a lot of work?

Biewald: (laughs) Oh yes, but our employees and partners are full of beans and highly motivated.

Editors: It is very good if you can rely on your employees and if they enjoy the work at the same time!Are there other activities in this year, things which you are planning?

Biewald: This year again we offer a series of train-ings regarding software and equipment applica-tion areas.

We have a HPLC system HP 1090 with DAD, fluorescence detector and an ELSD for the measurement of

many different compounds, aldehydes, ketones, amines, plastic momomers, synthetic additives, etc. In the middle of a sequence for the determi-nation of plastic additive the DAD failed. After having exchanged the deuterium lamp, which did not solve the problem, And as the HP 1090 has already been “out of support” at Agilent for several years, the end of this HPLC system see-med to have come. On the one hand we were in the middle of a project and on the other hand the purchase of a replacement is not only very expensive, but also needs a lot of time at the university. Up to this point we had nothing to do with Labex-change, but I had already heard from the “La-borgerätebörse”. So I googled, called them and asked, whether there can also be carried out repairs and whether a DAD card was availa-ble. My assumption was, that it was defective. Then I agreed with Mr. Biewald, that a service technician could come promptly with a used, but fully functional HP 1090 to our laboratory. The service technician found very quickly that the DAD card was intact and that the DAD itself was probably defective. We gave him our sys-tem and he informed me very quickly that he had replaced the entire DAD of our system with a functional used one and that our HPLC system was working again. Mr. Biewald sent per email the result of the DAD test with the variance comparison and a cost offer. We gladly accepted this and the next day the technician brought the system and installed it at its old place. Since then we are working as usual with our HP 1090.The agreements with Labexchange (Mr. Bie-wald) were uncomplicated, the work of the tech-nician was carried out absolutely professional and and from my point of view the prices are very fair (for example 4 working hours à 95.- Euro for the replacement of the DAD; packaging and transport. Burladingen/Stuttgart 100.- Euro), so that the repair was worth it and we

Our Hitachi spectrophotometer was already bought beginning of the 90s for the examinati-on of our pharmaceutical recipes.

In 2011 there was a defect for the first time. As it was not possible to order a repair at the supplier at that time, I have called spontaneously Labexchange Service and have explained my problem.
