[INSURANCE, PREVENTION, ASSISTANCE

Since 1811 the “Etablissement Cantonal d’Assurance” (Cantonal Establishment of Insurance, ECA) against fire and natural disasters has been ensuring the safety of personal property and real estate belong-ing to individuals and businesses.

On the basis of solidarity between all of its insured, insurance for fire and natural disasters is obligatory for everyone. This principle, not only ensures the best premiums, but also guarantees coverage, irrespective of risk exposure.

Furthermore, ECA is proactive in fire prevention, fire fighting and the efficiency and safety of rescue teams.

[IT AFFECTS ALL OF US

Fire, lightning, explosion, surface flooding, etc., don’t only happen to other people. It is wise to be ahead of the game by updating your insurance policy as soon as possible.

Thanks to ECA, you should find a similar situation to the one prior to a claim. We provide you the means to repairing damaged property or buying new property of the same quality.

[WHAT DOES YOUR ECA ” PERSONAL PROPERTY ” POLICY COVER ?

All personal property, for example, all of the belongings which you and your family possess for your own usage, including leasures.

However, property used for a professional activity (whether indus-trial, commercial, artistic, etc.) or for agricultural purposes is not included. As it is also obligatory for such property to be insured, it must be covered under a professional or agricultural insurance policy.

[WHAT RISKS ARE INSURED ?

Your personal property is insured against the risks of “fire” and “natural disasters”.

Risks

Fire

- fire- lightning and atmospheric discharges- explosions- smoke (sudden and accidental effects)- falling aircraft or parts which become detached from aircraft Damage caused by scorching or burning without there actually having been a fire, by short-circuits, power surges or heating caused by overloading. No indemnity isprovided for losses of less than CHF 50.–.

Natural disasters

- rockslides and rock falls;- landslides;- avalanches;- excessive weight and sliding snow;- high water and flooding;- hurricanes: violent windstorms which overturn trees or tear the roofs off of houses in the proximity of the damaged property;- hail;- sinkholes: subsidence and collapses over karstic phenomena.

Damages caused by natural disasters are subject to a deductible of minimum CHF 200.–. This amount will be deducted from the compensation.

32

[HOW MUCH SHOULD I INSURE?

If the sum insured is less than the replacement value, you are underin-sured. In the event of a loss, the indemnity will be reduced accordingly.

You must insure the price which you would have to pay today in order to buy similar goods in new condition.

Be careful: being underinsured can cost you a lot!

Only you know the value of your personal property. You must insure the exact amount on the inventory form.

[BEGINNING OF THE INSURANCE POLICY AND PREMIUMS

The coverage for insurance takes effect as soon as the duly completed and signed inventory of personal property is given to ECA. If it is sent by post, the postmark is evidence of the date.

The premium is due starting the day on which the insurance coverage begins (the amount is calculated pro rata to the length of time), and there-after on the 1st day of January yearly. The premium is sent yearly based on the values insured on the first day of January.

The minimum annual premium is CHF 20.–. Swiss stamp duty is payable in addition.

Now follow the guide and remember to let us know later about any import-ant purchases!

[PERSONAL INFORMATION

This information is intended to enable us to identify you to better serve you.

1 to 7. Surname, first name, address, date of birth and profession

Please confirm, complete or correct.

Rubric 4 “care of” is intended for people who do not live in their own apartment (lodgers) or who wish for correspondence from ECA to be sent to an address other than their home address.

State your current profession, function or title.

8. Telephone numbers and e-mail address

These will enable us to exchange information quicklier.

9. Does this policy replace an existing policy?

Generally speaking, the new policy automatically replaces the existing one. If the existing policy is to be maintained, however, check no. You will then have more than one policy covering personal property.

This is appropriate in particular in the case of a second home.

10. Does this policy cover the property of anyone living in the same household other than your wife/husband and children?

A single policy for the whole family!

It is up to either spouse to ensure that all members of the family are insured.

If you live with someone else, you also have the option of having just one policy covering your personal property and the other person’s property. If this is the case, please mention it here.

Remember to get the other person to sign the form as well; in that way he/she will receive payments from us in the event of a claim.

If this other person already has a policy covering personal property, please mention if it is to be replaced (check  yes). In the absence of , the old policy will be maintained.

11. Number of rooms

Do not count the bathrooms, kitchen, cellar or attic.

Personal property stored there is included within the values recom-mended on pages 10 and 11.

12. Number of people whose property is insured under this policy

Count the people (adults and children) residing at the same address.

13. Location(s) of the property

Your property is covered at the insured location(s) stated on your inventory. If the risk location (building where the property is usually kept) is different to the address stated at the top of your policy or if your property is spread over several different locations, you must specify all locations, for example, family gardens, mobile home, caravan, storage facility (wines, furniture), etc.

If you have a chalet or secondary home in the canton of Vaud, com-plete a separate policy to insure the property located there and men-tion the address, for example “Le Lavanchy, Les Diablerets”. Property temporarily removed from the home for work purposes, for a trip or a holiday, remain covered, without any additional charge, for up to a maximum of CHF 20,000 and for no longer than 60 days. Personal property transported for the purposes of military service, also remains insured, without any additional charge for the length of that period.

 A. VALUE OF PERSONAL PROPERTY

The table on the next page has been drawn up to make your job easier. It includes all common personal property.

We have used values which will enable you to replace damaged prop-erty with new property. Depending upon the quality and importance of your property, you have the choice between a coverage for “simple quality” or “higher quality”.

Thus, for example, a couple with one child, living in a four room apartment, will choose an amount between CHF 101’500.– and CHF 151’700.–.

You may also make your own evaluation, for example, by drawing up an inventory of your personal property.

Specific objects (electronic devices, travel, DO IT YOURSELF, etc.) are listed separately (rubric B of the policy).

In the case of property where ownership is divided on a floor-by-floor basis, home improvements carried out by or on behalf of the co-owners must be insured under the building policy. Look into this issue with the administrator of your property. However, in the event of difficulties, you may, exceptionally, include these home improvements under this rubric. Note that if you move, it will be up to you to review the sum insured under your policy and advice the new owner to insure these home improvements in his policy.

However, equipment which forms an integral part of the building (e.g. fitted kitchens, floor, wall and ceiling coverings) are insured with the building.

[B9. RESERVE FOR FUTURE PURCHASESThis reserve is intended to cover any purchases which you may make in the relatively near future. It will avoid you having to revise your policy too often.

If, however, future purchases are significant (in terms of value or quality) or if they relate to special items (rubrics D1 to D4), we advise you to update your insurance inventory in order to avoid the disappointment of an under-insurance in the event of a claim.

We suggest you subscribe 10% of rubric A. Note that this rubric cannot, under any circumstances, be requested for any purchase made prior to the establishment of the policy or in the event of coverage under rubric F being insufficient or non-existent.
