BIDDESTONE VILLAGE HALL AND RECREATION TRUST The Biddestone Village Hall & Recreation Trust AGM will be held on Wednesday 18 June at 7.30 p.m. The current committee have all served for some years (most since the trust was formed) and a num-ber feel its time to hand on this responsibility to oth-ers. This is a great way to become more involved in vil-lage life and get to know your fellow residents. No particular skills or qualifications are needed just some enthusiasm and the will to put back something into the village we all enjoy living in so much. The commitment is minimal with one short meeting a month and occasional participation in other events. At the moment we have definite vacancies for Bookings Secretary Treasurer Why not come along to the AGM and find out what you can do to help. BVH&RT

SPONSORED WALK Dwaine and myself would like to thanks all the villagers that supported our walk from Lord's to Biddestone. We had some amazing donations from villagers - thank you so much! it has also be great that so many villagers have also been interested in the project and been really supportive of our end plan for both cricket and also the local village community. We raised £5,100 in the end, which was fantastic. Also thanks to all villagers who came out to welcome us back to Bid-destone on Good Friday at The Biddestone Arms. Andy Short & Dwaine Perry NEW CRICKET PAVILION PROJECT. We are pleased to confirm that we have received planning approval from Wilts Council for our proposed new wooden pavilion. The project was explained at the open PC meeting but if anyone is interested to see the ideas, then please give me a call. Wilts Planning are also willing to accept that the existing building stays as it is until we move on the new plans. Thanks to the BVH&RT Committee for their full support with this project, it was very important to have this. We have received a £5,000 Grant from Wiltshire Coun-cil Area Board towards this project. We are now working on a grant proposal to Sport England for up to £50,000 towards the new pavilion project. We are being mentored by Paul Pritchard of Wilts Council, who is giving us all the help that he can. FAWNS FUN CRICKET. This starts on Friday May 2nd from 6 pm until 7pm at Biddestone Crick-et Ground. We hope to have the bar open for parents - so please put the word around - any parents that would like to help we will be pleased to see you all! Andy Short. DOG MESS With the start of the new Cricket Season the unpleasant topic of Dog Fouling of the playing area returns. Despite many appeals, a plethora of notices, bins, the designa-tion of the land under The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 and dog control orders some owners refuse to clean up after their pets (some even attempt to pull down the signs). It would be nice to think that these people are all outsiders although it is clear that some are villagers!! BVH&RT and the Sports Clubs would like to appeal yet again for all owners who exercise their dogs on the sports field to behave responsibly and clean up after their pets.

In the last edition of the Broadsheet plans to replace the old Biddestone Cricket Pavilion where an-nounced. For a number of us, construction of the old pavilion was a major job and formed a major part of our lives at that time. With its planned demise its would seem appropriate to hold a wake to commemorate its loss when the bulldozers move in. To that end should any of the past members wish to remember the construction and commemorate its passing I would be grateful if they would contact me, an excuse to meet up for a meal somewhere. Record of Biddestone & Hartham W.I. Meeting on 16th April 2014 President, Jo Hancock, welcomed ten members and one guest to the meeting. She then introduced speaker, Mrs. Sa-rah Buttershaw, to talk about St. Helena and the Ascension Islands, which she had visited five years ago. She gave a very interesting talk, with some excellent photographs of the islands, which were formed by volcanic activity in the mid-Atlantic Ridge running under the sea and are 700 miles apart. Although first discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, they, together with Tristan da Cunha, form a British Overseas Territory. St. Helena is at last going to have its own airport, due to be completed by 2016; at present the only way of getting there is by a five day journey by sea from Capetown. The Ascension Islands are used for a telecommunication centre and base for the U.S. Air Force. Guest, Mary Mullens, gave a vote of thanks. Her daughter and family lived on St.Helena for some time and Mary has visited St. Helena twice, so was particularly interested in the talk After refreshments, the Record of the previous meeting was read and approved. Minutes arising The W.I. programme is now displayed on the notice board in the Village Hall A letter had been received.from Ann Hooper with thanks for the donation for the Animal Sanctuary. Jo welcomed back Margaret Beswick after her operation Valerie Spencer-Jones has agreed to talk in favour of the Resolution on “Increasing Organ Donation” at the May meeting. Correspondence There is an Action Pack for “Back our Bees” campaign A list of new Speakers resulting from the New Speakers Day at Upper Seagry has been received. Also received, the Annual W.I. Review booklet and the Agenda for the AGM.

Free admission:- An invitation has been sent to all Parish Councils, who we have requested extend the invitation to representa-tives from all your key groups with in the community ie Village Hall, Sports, School, Church, Tennis/Football/Rugby, Scout/Guide committee's & local public houses. Are you someone who would be interested in learning more about CPR, & how this links to the importance of the intervention of a defibrillator? Come along to do a fact finding exercise, so you can make an informed choice for your community. We are supported by the presenters who are:- The South Western Ambulance Service, Com-munity Heartbeat Trust, St: Johns Ambulance, Wilts Fire & Rescue & other partners. Please book your place through [email protected]. Tel No. 01249 706448 Or contact Alison Butler for further information & I will book for you. Tel. No. 07590806719 or [email protected] There are already a number of public access defibrillators available in the Chippenham & Villages Area. However to promote a full geographical coverage & their location, particularly in Rural Areas, we need to raise awareness of the importance of how to perform CPR, use of a defibrillator, & first aid. The presentations will cover:- demonstration of defibrillators, how to perform CPR, first aid awareness, plus all the ancillary information around planning considerations, funding sources, ongoing costs, liability, opportunity for practical individual support & networking. People associate a defibrillator with being used on a person who has suffered a heart attack, however people across a wide age range collapse with undiagnosed arrhythmias of the heart. Recent publicity around high profile sports-men/women have raised the publics awareness of this syndrome. Quick intervention with CPR & an AED is the best way the heart has a chance to return to sinus rhythm to enable it to maintain oxygen to the brain. From the team of committed people who are putting this event together on your behalf.......see you there! The gifts are kindly donated by parents, and bought for a £1, and we made a pleasing £180. Our Easter fair was on the last day of term – the rain held off so we had games and stalls inside and out. The chocolate tombola was as popular as ever, which helped raise an impressive total of £500! The Summer term will be just as busy – I’ll report back on our annual bike ride at Castle Combe circuit next month. We hope our Boden Shop-ping party on Thursday 1st May will be a success, and we will need many helpers when we manage the car park at the charity Car Boot Sale again at Castle Combe on 1st June. Claire Gray, FoBBVS.

The Wrong Way Round & Round Sunday 8 June 2014 For the fifth year, the residents of Yatton Keynell are organising the Wrong Way Round Bike Ride, and extend a warm welcome to their neighbours in Biddestone. This year’s event is a new format. Instead of riding home from Hyde Park Corner, it’s an easy 19-mile circuit based on Yatton Keynell, and you can go round as many times as you like. Hence the new name. In previous years, this family-friendly bike ride had seen a good contingent from Biddestone. The organisers would be delighted if some Biddestone villagers wanted to take part again this year. Start and finish at The Bell Inn, Yatton Keynell. If you want a relaxing day, you can do one lap or two laps. Whatev-er takes your fancy or inspires your enthusiasm. If you’re looking for a challenge, complete five laps to achieve the 97-mile total displayed on the iconic milestone at the centre of the village. And you’ll earn yourself a medal as well. You can do it for charity, or do it for fun. Go fast, or go slow. Ride solo, or with friends and family. It’s up to you. As long as everyone has a fun day out on two wheels. The Bell Inn will be open all day. Supporters and spectators most welcome to come and cheer the riders as they go round and round. For entry forms and other information, please see www.yattonkeynell.com/wrong-way-round

Audrey Kirby Smith 1925 – 2014

Audrey was born in Ealing, Middlesex. She never talked much about her early life, possibly because it did not appear to her to be out of the ordinary. Her Brother Brian was seven years younger than her, and it would appear that they got on well, judging by their close affection in later life. She never talked about her schooling, but we know she went to Pitmans College where she learnt her typing skills. Audrey met and married Arthur Smith, known as Kirby, in 1949, and in September 1950 gave birth to her first daugh-ter, Kathleen. Father had secured a job at Westinghouse in Chippenham, after the firm he worked for in Middlesex had gone out of business, and had lodged in Corsham for a while looking for a place to settle with his family. Mum used to tell us about the time when she visited Wiltshire one weekend and was taken to view houses in Colerne, Box and Corsham, but she fell in love with Westbury in Biddestone. In August 1951, and with Audrey heavily pregnant with their second child, they moved into a house that was still being renovated, and work was still being done when I left home seventeen years later. But it was not long after this that it became the house of their dreams. Audrey’s story is not especially remarkable yet it is unique, as all our lives are, and not devoid of interest. She brought up four children, engaged in village activities and played her part by taking on various community offices in support of the WI and this Church. Mum had learnt to drive whilst expecting her third child, Edward. Father was her teacher and she was proud to say she passed on the first occasion. Their final daughter, Margaret, came along in 1956, which balanced the family, two girls and two boys. She was committed to her family and the community in which we lived and, I believe, very content with her lot. As we all grew up and went our separate ways, some of us further than others, I do not believe she fretted for us, being confident she had instilled the right values in her children. She liked to know what we were doing and encouraged us in our endeavours. As a mother she was not overbearing but was ready to cor-rect where correction was required. Audrey was able to see all her children married, her grandchildren grow up and then be presented with great grandchildren. Her life was not without sorrow. Immediately after his retirement, her own fa-ther died suddenly which changed the expectations of her life. The loss of any child is a great sorrow and to see her eldest daughter precede her to the grave, struck down by cancer whilst she was still a young mother, was a great shock. There was great love between Audrey and Kirby which continued through to the end. She was ready to be laid to rest alongside him. The legacy that she and Father left is a well established family. Precis of eulogy given by Stewart Smith at her funeral.

Tribute by Mary Mullens

To me, Audrey was always behind the scenes in anything happening in the village. For many years she was the Treasurer of the Church, as well as sacristan, washer of the church linen, changer of the altar frontals, and no doubt cleaner of the church brass. She attended all church services in all weathers, even after she had to use a buggy to get there. For many years she was president, secretary and treasurer of the WI, always attending meetings and going on many outings. Any church or village function that required teas, supplied by the WI, whether it was the Fete, Prefete, Manor teas, or social functions at the village hall, you would find that not only had Audrey made several cakes but she had helped at the functions as well, even if latterly it was only washing the dishes. As long as Audrey could, she either drove or caught an early lift into Chippenham, where she would be found on a Friday morning at the WI market stall in WI uniform while in the Saint Andrew’s Hall, and later when it moved out-side, muffled up in all weathers, being the cashier. WI Members from the surrounding villages would bring in their cakes and other baking, also flowers and produce from their gardens. In those days there was no cash register, just Audrey’s head and mental arithmetic to work the change out. And of course, no Health and safety regulations to ad-here to. For a long time, Audrey would open her house in the summer as a B&B with full board, her visitors came year after year knowing that they would always get a warm welcome in a very comfortable place and that the food would be excellent. Even after she had left Westbury, some of her friends would continue to come for their holidays. Despite her failing eyesight and hearing she was always cheerful, pleased to see any visitors and wanted to know all that was going on in the village. She bore any illness or trials with fortitude and never complained about her lot. After many years of not being able to read she was thrilled when a machine was found that would scan her book or maga-zine and would relay the picture onto her television screen so that she could read it. Sometimes she would sit up well

into the early hours caught up in a story. Audrey never stopped cooking, even when her sight was getting worse, and would continue to make cakes and bis-cuits and also many different types of marmalade, which were greatly enjoyed by many villagers and ex-villagers. She was a great card player, whether it was whist in the village, or canasta with her friends and family. She attended a course to learn bridge with me many years ago, but never really played as by then she could not tell which suit was which, despite having a pack of cards which gave each suit a different colour. Her skill at Scrabble was phenomenal – she could hardly see the board, but still managed to get long words with high scores in places no one else could see, and that was two weeks before she died. Audrey was always adamant that she did not wish to be a burden to anyone, and she wasn’t. It was always a pleasure to be with her and help her when she asked for it. It was a privilege to have known her, she was a very easy person to love, and I will miss her a lot.

We are two mums from Chippenham who inspired by our love of baking, wanted to get together with fellow home bakers to share knowledge, recipes and tips for successful baking and have set up a club for likeminded people. We are confident, especially given the recent interest in baking that the club will be a success, however this is dependent on raising awareness of the club. We have a website and facebook page and hoped you may be able to give the club a much needed mention to let the people of Biddestone know about it. We hope to run a meeting at the village hall in the future. Below is some more information but please do not hesitate to contact us if you need more or if you have any questions. We aim to meet on a monthly basis at a venue local to Chippenham and the surrounding villages. The idea is simple: we all bake something, bring it along and share what we have baked with each other. So whether you're a beginner or you could give Mary Berry a run for her money, we would love y ou to join. It's not a competition, just a way for home bakers to get together, share ideas and their love of baking, make new friends and eat as much as possible! Each month has a theme which could be seasonal, based around an ingredient or technique. Our first event is on Friday 25 April 2014 at 7.45pm. The theme is My Favourite Bake, so whether it’s biscuits, a large cake, cupcakes, meringues, pastries or a quiche, bake it and bring it! There is no judging of bakes, it is not a competition. There is a small charge of £3 per person payable on the night. This is to cover the venue hire and unlimited tea and coffee.
