Broad Run Rolls in Season Opener Over Booker T. Washington

As the Broad Run marching band took to the field to play the national anthem, Head Coach Matt Griffis had to like what he saw as he peered down the home sideline. He looked down that line and saw his quarterback, dual threat Brady Reitzel, a senior who has been playing in meaningful varsity games since his freshman year. Next to Reitzel he saw three year starter on both offense and defense, senior Chuck Davis. Further down, Griffis saw proven returning senior leadership on both sides of the ball in players such as Jashawn Banks and Jack Hawkins on defense, and Will Yancey, Shane Faett, and Jimmy Fiume on offense. He also had to be pleased to see valuable underclassman such as Matt Meier, Meech Hembry, Chris Moore and Clyde Bryson pacing the sideline, anxiously awaiting the opening kickoff. Griffis also had the opportunity, however, to look across the field, and what he saw when he glanced over must have given him pause. The Mighty Bookers of Washington High School were lead by 6'5', 250 pound sophomore quarterback Brandon Gaddy and five , count 'em, five lineman weighing in at 300 pounds or more. Earlier in the week, Griffis mentioned how hard his Spartans had worked to get in shape throughout the summer, and he hoped that all of that hard work would pay off under the hot August sun against their much larger opponent. The Spartan offense found it tough going early on, as they were forced to punt on their first two possessions. The defense, however, led by Meier and Banks, was swarming, and they also forced two quick punts. The offense was then able to settle in, and put together their first scoring drive of the

season. Reitzel, given time by his line, was able to find junior Jaleel Robinson open on an 18 yard strike for a touchdown. Will Sherman connected on his first extra point try and the Spartans found themselves up 7-0 midway through the first quarter. Just before the end of the first quarter, the Spartans found themselves deep in their own territory. Trying to run the ball out of harm's way, senior running back Willie Smallwood was swallowed up by the monstrous Washington defensive line for a safety. The defensive score temporarily energized the wilting Bookers, who continued to cause trouble up front for the smaller Spartans. With the

Spartans leading 7-2 and only a minute and a half left until halftime, Reitzel turned to his most trusted receiver in Chuck Davis. Reitzel found Davis open and then watched his other receivers make several key blocks downfield, enabling Davis to go the distance for a 54 yard touchdown. Momentum had certainly reverted back to the Spartans, and could not have come at a better time as the first half drew to a close. Broad Run came out in the third quarter and immediately began to impose their will on the Mighty Bookers. Reitzel's acumen at running the read option was giving the Bookers fits, and resulted in two rushing scores by the quarterback. Content to pound the ball, the Spartans controlled it for almost the entire third quarter, and found themselves up by a score of 26-2 with only two minutes left in the third quarter. Just when it looked as though things were comfortably in hand, however, Washington return man Demonte Smith took the kickoff and raced 90 yards for the touchdown. The score did not remain 26-9 for long, however, as the Spartans went on yet another long drive. Reitzel would eventually find senior Alex Galloway for his third touchdown pass of the day. Galloway's 28 yard touchdown reception came just 13 seconds into the 4th quarter. At this point, Griffis turned the game over to his second string, who responded beautifully. The fresher Spartans completely dominated their worn out guests the rest of the way, adding three more scores including a 28 yard sprint by senior Jayden Bunting and two touchdown runs by sophomore quarterback Kyle Brickerd, making the final score 53-9 in favor of Broad Run. The Spartan coaching staff had to be pleased with the overall effort, as Broad Run dominated every facet of the game. The Spartans held the Mighty Bookers to 77

yards rushing while churning out 267 yards themselves. In addition to his two rushing touchdowns, Reitzel connected with three different receivers for his three touchdown passes and the Spartans did not turn the ball over. The Spartans were able to put up 413 total yards while holding their opponents from Norfolk to just 175. Next up for the Spartans is a road match-up against the Dominion Titans and Clemson recruit Chad Smith. The Spartans were able to defeat the Titans last season, handing the 7-5 Titans their worst defeat in a 41-0 drubbing.

Spartans Look Impressive Against Dominion Coming off of their impressive 53 - 9 drubbing of Booker T. Washington last week to open up the 2014 season, Broad Run Head Coach Matt Griffis set some lofty goals for his units on both sides of the ball, as well as special teams, this week against a Titan team that was coming off of their best season in school history in 2013. Some goals were met, some were not, but the end result was a solid 30-6 win against the Dominion Titans this week in Sterling. Sam Sergi set the tempo early for the Spartans, as his opening kickoff sailed into the end zone for a touchback. The senior, making his debut for the 2014 season, would go on to boom all of his kickoffs on the night into the end zone, forcing the Titans to consistantly have to start their drives from their own 20 yard line. Dominion was having some early success moving the ball on their first drive, but on 3rd and 4 from the Dominion 36, junior Matt Meier made the first of his many bone-jarring hits on the night, forcing the Titans to punt. The teams punted back and fourth until there was 5:44 left in the first quarter. Right after quarterback Brady Reitzel picked up a big first down on 3rd and inches, the senior dropped back and found junior Jaleel Robinson wide open in the left corner of the end zone, and Broad Run took a lead that they would not give up.

Following another Sergi touchback, Meier immediately made his second impact tackle in as many plays, causing a fumble that was scooped up by senior Willie Smallwood. On the next play, hard running tailback Jashawn Banks found a seam up the middle from the Dominion 14, and the Spartans found themselves up 14-0, scoring their two touchdowns just 11 seconds apart. Another defensive stop gave the Spartans the ball once again, and Banks scored on the first offensive play of the drive, this time running in untouched from 19 yards out.

Finding themselves down 21-0, Dominion was forced to throw the ball, and found some success through the air. Junior transfer quarterback Scotty Forbes, who was practicing with the Briar Woods Falcons until just a couple of weeks ago, found Clemson recruit Chad Smith wide open for a 44 yard gain, down to the Spartan 4 yard line. The Titans picked up three yards on first down, but on 2nd and goal from the one yard line, senior Alex West came hard off the edge and recovered a Forbes fumble on a low snap. The Dominion defense made a few plays of its' own, forcing a couple of Reitzel punts. The Titans found themselves back deep in Spartan territory, but Fobres couldn't get the ball to tight end Smith on a couple of passes in the end zone, and the half came to an end.

Page 9: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON IN REVIEW · BROAD RUN VARSITY FOOTBALL ROSTER 2014 1 Moore, Chris WR/DB 11 6'2 180 47 Raymond, Evan WR/DB 10 5'8 165 2 Davis, Chuck WR/DB 12 6'1 175

Smallwood, who stands about 5'6 but plays much taller, took the second half kickoff all the way back to the Titan 48. The Spartans got down to the Titan 26, but instead of going for it on 4th and 2, Griffis called on his senior kicker. Sergi's 43 yard field goal attempt was good, and the Spartan lead was now 24-0. After the kickoff, Forbes again turned to his senior tight end, and Smith found an open lane and rambled for 47 yards. Smallwood saved a touchdown by catching Smith from behind. Matt Meir's personal highlight show continued as he made a tackle behind the line of scrimmage on 2nd and 7, and then recovered another Forbes fumble on the very next play.

With the ball back in his hands, Reitzel found senior Alex Galloway open for a 40 yard completion, but the gain was wiped out by a holding penalty. Reitzel again turned to Galloway, but this time, the pass slipped through his fingertips for a Titans interception. Forbes threw to junior wide receiver Derrrick Kouame for a couple of receptions totalling 32 yards. Forbes then found Taliek Washington in the flat on 2nd and goal, and the Titans were finally on the board. There was no more

scoring in the 3rd quarter, but early in the 4th, Reitzel found some running room behind his offensive line, and picked up 30 yards on two keepers. Smallwood, spelling Banks at tailback, completed the nights's scorong when he found the end zone from ten yards out. Seniors Will Yancey and Shane Faett led the offensive line in opening up some huge lanes for Reitzel, Banks, and Smallwood. The Spartans rambled for almost 250 yards rushing on the night. Dominion hung tough on this hot and humid night, and showed that they have a bright future, with underclassman at many of the skill postions. Forbes in particular gave the Spartans all they could handle, buying time with his feet and extending plays despite being under constant pressure from the Spartan defensive front. Coach Griffis and his Spartans seek to go to 3-0 when they host the Heritage Pride next Friday at 7:00. The Titans are also at home next Friday, hosting Freedom-South Riding.

Spartans Roll Up 55 as They Cruise Past the Pride A 30 yard punt return. An 8 yard touchdown catch. A jarring tackle behind the line of scrimmage on a 3rd and 1. An interception. A 20 yard reception. A blocked extra point. And a second interception, this one returned for 35 yards. Pretty impressive game, right? Well, Broad Run senior Chuck Davis was able to accomplish all of that, and more, in the first half alone in leading his team to a big victory over the Heritage Pride on Friday night in Ashburn. Broad Run won the toss to start the night, but deferred, and the move paid off quickly as the Spartans were able to force a 3 and out to start the game. Davis took that first punt and zigzagged his way for 30 yards, setting up Broad Run at the Heritage 28. Davis was aided on the return by one of the best blocks of the year (or any year!) by his defensive backfield mate, junior Chris Moore. The Spartans soon found themselves in a 4th and 1 situation, and Spartan Head Coach Matt Griffis turned to his bruising senior, Jashawn Banks to get the job done. Banks plowed his way through the middle for a big first down. Spartan quarterback Brady Reitzel then found Davis wide open in the left corner of the end zone and the Spartans were off and rolling. Heritage Head Coach Reed Prosser was faced with his own 4th and 1 on the next drive from his own 38 yard line. Electing to go for it, elusive sophomore quarterback Alex Carlin rolled left, but was unable to connect on a long pass downfield. Given a short field, Reitzel came out firing. Two completions and a scramble later and the Spartans were down to the Pride 5 yard line. Senior Willie Smallwood found a huge hole up the middle for the second Spartan touchdown. An unsportsmanlike conduct call against Broad Run following the touchdown prevented Spartan senior Sam Sergi from putting the kickoff into the end zone for the first time this year, but senior Jack Hawkins made a big tackle for a loss on the Heritage drive, forcing the Pride to punt.

Reitzel found junior Jaleel Robinson open for a 33 yard catch before Banks plowed it in from the 1 and the Spartans were up 21-0 early in the second. Davis picked off a pass by Carlin, and Reitzel then hit senior Tyriek King on a slant for the touchdown. Sergi's fouth extra point in as many tries put the Spartans up 28-0. Down by four touchdowns, Carlin then led his teammates on a 62 yard drive. Somehow, the Spartans didn't see 6'4" junior Cole Miller streaking down the middle, and the two hooked up for a 37 yard touchdown catch. Davis got through, however, and blocked the extra point.

Page 12: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON IN REVIEW · BROAD RUN VARSITY FOOTBALL ROSTER 2014 1 Moore, Chris WR/DB 11 6'2 180 47 Raymond, Evan WR/DB 10 5'8 165 2 Davis, Chuck WR/DB 12 6'1 175

Broad Run gave the ball back to Heritage following a Reitzel pass that was picked off by Heritage senior Jefferson Garcia. The Pride were not able to capitalize, however, and Davis returned the favor and picked off his second pass of the night, returning it for 35 yards. A Sergi field goal from 35 yards out was good and the lead was pushed to 31-6. Prosser again gambled on a 4th and 1 after the Pride had driven down to the Spartan 37. Smallwood made a big stop just short of the first down marker so the Spartans took over with 1:43 left in the half. Reitzel hit on five completions on the ensuing drive, finding senior Alex Galloway for his third touchdown pass of the game. Early in the 3rd quarter, Reitzel found some daylight and rambled for a 20 yard score, thus ending his night. A Banks sack of Carlin ended the next Pride drive. Smallwood again was able to find a huge hole up the middle, this time running for 37 yards, before sophomore running back Jayden Bunting punched one in from the 2, giving Broad Run a 52-6 lead. The only scoring in the 4th quarter came on junior Will Sherman's 20 yard field goal, capping an impressive Spartan performance. Following the game, when asked how he felt that he and his teammates had played, senior captain Will Yancy felt as though the coaching staff had prepared them well for the game, that each man knew what was expected of him, and were then able to go out and execute. With their third win in as many games now behind them, Yancy was then asked about the following week's opponent. Yancy's eyes lit up when he spoke of the big game next Friday at Stone Bridge. He shared how the Spartans knew the Bulldogs and vice versa, and how they had all played together in the highly successful Ashburn Youth Football League while growing up. When asked to describe his feelings about playing Stone Bridge in his senior season, Yancy was able to sum it up in one word - "Excited." Yancy then ran off to join his teammates. There was no need to say anything more. Stone Bridge week had officially begun.

Stone Bridge Wins a Thriller as Broad Run Falls 17-9

It was just nine months ago that Matt Griffis enjoyed his most important victory as the Spartan's Head Coach, knocking perennial state power and crosstown rival Stone Bridge from the 5A state playoffs. That Spartan team was a decided underdog in that game. This year's version, however, was not. Coming into the game ranked # 6 in the latest Washington Post Football Rankings, the Spartans hoped to accomplish something that no other team has been able to do - knock off the proud Bulldogs in consecutive attempts on their home field. Coach Mickey Thompson and his outstanding group of seniors, led by the tandem of Chance Frye and Collin Buckley, came rushing out and held off the Spartans in the latest Battle of the Burn by the score of 17-9. The Spartans won the coin toss but elected to defer and Stone Bridge got started quickly, as Frye took the ball on the second play from scrimmage and rambled 61 yards, down the to Spartan 17. Bulldog workhorse Buckley (26 carries for 114 yards) took it the rest of the way, scoring on a 6 yard run. Junior kicker Brett Smedley added the extra point and the Bulldogs were up 7-0. The Spartans were hit with an unsportsmanlike penalty and rather than have Smedlley boom his kickoff into the end zone for a touch back, Thompson elected to go for an onside kick. Senior Michael Kuzbel recovered the ball for Stone Bridge, and the Bulldogs were back in business at the Spartan 36 yard line. Thompson elected to try and convert on 4th and 7 from the Spartan 33, but Buckley was unable to haul in a screen pass from junior quarterback Joe Thomson, and the Spartans took over on downs. On 3rd and inches from their own 42, senior Jashawn Banks then found a seam up the middle that went for 20 yards. The Bulldogs held, however, and senior Sam Sergi came out to attempt a 39 yard field goal. Sergi missed for the first time this year, and the Bulldogs took over with 5:02 left in the 1st quarter. Following a Thompson to Frye reception that went for 23 yards and a Buckley run that gained 16, Spartan defensive end Banks was able to get to Thompson, and the sack put the Bulldogs in a 4th and long. Smedley came out and nailed a 38 yard field goal, giving the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead. The Bulldogs attempted another onsides kick, but this time senior Marcel Mingo came up with the ball, giving the Spartans excellent field position on their own 46 yard line. Senior Willie Smallwood was then able to sneak through the line and following several broken tackles, found himself with a 21 yard gain. Bulldog linebacker Tanner Karafa ( Boston College commit) made three tackles on three consecutive plays, and Sergi came out to again attempt a field goal. The 32 yard attempt was good and Broad Run was on the board. With 9:36 left in the half, Stone Bridge took over on their own 12 yard line following a muffed return attempt. Faced with the formidable Bulldog rushing attack, the Spartans had to try and commit to stopping the run. Thompson took advantage and found senior receiver Andrew Ciampini open on a post pattern, but the

Spartan safeties were able to converge and knock the ball from his hands in the back of the end zone. A roughing call on Thompson, however, gave the Bulldogs a first down at the Spartan 22. Three straight running plays, however, only netted three yards, and Smedley came out to attempt his second field goal, this time from 36 yards out. The attempt was wide left, however, giving the Spartans one more possession before the half. After being sacked by Stone Bridge's James Prohaska, senior quarterback Brady Reitzel took over, going 4 for 5 on

the drive for 78 yards. The Spartans found themselves out of time outs, however, and had to settle for a 21 one field goal by Sergi with under a second left before halftime. Thompson attempted a third onside kick to start the 3rd quarter but junior Chris Moore recovered. Once again finding themselves with excellent starting field position, the Spartans were able to drive down to the Bulldog 20. On 3rd and 11, Karafa was able to make a big stop on Reitzel when it looked like the Spartan quarterback might have found enough room for the first down. Sergi's third field goal on the night was good, and the Bulldogs lead was down to one. On the ensuing possession, Stone Bridge was forced to punt following heavy pressure by senior Jack Hawkins on a 3rd and 11 pass attempt to Ciampini. The Spartans were then able to move the ball down to the Bulldog 22 yard line, but a Banks fumble was recovered by Prohaska. The Bulldogs were unable to take advantage, however, and were forced to punt on 4th and 15 from their own 17 yard line. Senior Chuck Davis, aided by several crushing blocks by junior Chris Moore, was able to race down to the Bulldog 41. A sideline penalty was then tacked on, but the Bulldogs kept wraps on Reitzel, and a pass attempt and two keepers were able to net only four yards. Sergi's fifth field goal attempt, which would have given the Spartans their first lead of the night, was hooked to the left and the Bulldogs took over with 4:13 left in the 3rd quarter. The Bulldogs took the ball from their own 20, and quickly marched to midfield. A Buckley fumble rolled out of

bounds much to the Spartan's chagrin, and on the next play Thompson found the speedy Frye open for a 45 yard touchdown down the right side. The two minute drive put the Bulldogs up by eight, 17 to 9. Coach Thompson must have been disappointed when he finally elected to kick one deep. Junior Jaleel Robinson fielded the kick at his own 26 and raced up the middle for 20 yards, giving the Spartans the ball on their own 46 yard line. The Spartans were unable to get anything going, however, and Reitzel's attempt on 4th and 10 fell incomplete as the third quarter came to an end.

Furious Fourth Quarter Rally Lifts Broad Run over Liberty 38-35

8.6 seconds left in the game. Ten yards left to reach the end zone. Down by four. A time for heroes in a game full of them. As Spartan senior quarterback Brady Reitzel surveyed the Liberty defense one last time, he tried to figure out the Eagles' coverage scheme. His offensive line, minus injured captain Will Yancey, had been under a barrage of blitzes throughout their fourth quarter rally. The line held for one last play, as senior Tyriek King found an open patch. Reitzel then fired a strike and King held on in the

end zone as the Spartans were able to escape Liberty with an improbable, exciting 38-35 win to run their record to 4-1 at the season's midway point. Coming into the game, Spartan Coach Matt Griffis had no illusions that this year's contest would be as one sided as last year's 52-24 triumph. This Liberty team had outscored their first three opponents by a combined score of 144-7. More daunting, perhaps, was the fact that their massive offensive line averaged 290 pounds across the board. Griffis was confident that his team would be able to move the ball and put points on the board, but was worried about how his defensive front seven would match up against such an imposing unit. Things started out well for the Spartans as they scored on their first three possessions, including the first score of the game on a Reitzel keeper from the 1-yard line following a fumble by Liberty's Martin Parker. Liberty would answer back quickly, as their powerful ground game found traction, and following a touchdown run by Liberty senior TJ Hogan, the score was tied at 7. Liberty's strategy of pooching their kick-offs gave Broad Run excellent field position to start their next drive, taking over on their own 46 following a return by junior Jaleel Robinson. Showing confidence in his own offensive line, Griffis called upon senior Jashawn Banks to convert on 4th and inches from the Eagles' 23. Following the big conversion, Griffis kept the ball in Banks' hands for the next two plays, and the senior rewarded his coach with a powerful blast into the end zone from 13 yards out. The Spartan defense then forced a big stop and took over on their own 8 yard line. Senior Willie Smallwood then put together a drive to remember, as he sandwiched two long runs around a beautifully executed screen pass, gaining 60 total yards in the process. The Eagle defense was able to keep the Spartans out of the end zone, however, and Broad Run had to settle for a 32 yard field goal by senior kicker Sam Sergi. The Spartans were hoping that their 17-7 lead would hold as halftime neared. Liberty had 2:26 in which to cover 41 yards. With elusive junior quarterback Aaron Walters doing most of the damage, the Eagles found themselves at the Spartan 4 with just seconds remaining in the half. Walters followed his monstrous teammates up the middle, cutting the Spartan lead to 3 as the 2nd quarter ended.

Page 18: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON IN REVIEW · BROAD RUN VARSITY FOOTBALL ROSTER 2014 1 Moore, Chris WR/DB 11 6'2 180 47 Raymond, Evan WR/DB 10 5'8 165 2 Davis, Chuck WR/DB 12 6'1 175

The Eagles came out roaring to start the second half. Walters and Parker were each able to follow their blockers for easy scores and the Spartans found themselves down 28-17 with 47 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. Reitzel, moving quickly now, hooked up with senior Chuck Davis for 38 yards and King for 16 more. Following two hard runs by Banks, the Spartans found themselves with 1st and goal from the Liberty 4 yard line. The Eagles stiffened, however, and on 4th and goal from the 9, Griffis elected to go for the touchdown. Liberty blitzed, and forced Reitzel into his first interception of the night. Walters and his Eagle teammates looked to be in control as they attempted a 47 yard field goal with 7:15 left in the game, but the kick fell short and the Spartans clung to life. Reitzel, came out firing and, after hitting Davis four times on the drive, handed off to Smallwood (12 rushes for 93 yards) on the Eagles 30 yard line. Smallwood found a hole, broke a tackle, and fell into the end zone, cutting the lead to 5. The quick strike Spartan offense had covered the 80 yards in 2:08 seconds. The two point conversion was no good, however, as the Eagles clung to their lead, 28-23. Griffis, now clearly worried about the Eagles ground and pound strategy, attempted an on-side kick with 5:07 left. Liberty recovered, and things looked bleak for the Spartans, especially after Walters was able to push past Banks on 3rd and inches for a first down. Banks, a three year starter and two way player, immediately came back with arguably the biggest play of his storied Spartan career. Walters took the snap on 1st and 10, and tried to go off tackle, only to have Banks come flying in and strip the ball right from his arms. The stunned Eagles watched in disbelief as Banks then rambled 60 yards for the go-ahead score. The two point conversion was good as the visiting bench erupted.

Liberty wasn't going to go down without a fight. Down by 4 with just over three minutes left, Walters regained his composure and led the Eagles on a 10 play, 70 yard drive. Walters completed 3 out of 5 passes on the drive, including a clutch 14 yard completion on 4th down from the Broad Run 31. TJ Hogan found a huge hole up the middle and scored with just 1:08 left in the game. The extra point gave Liberty a three point lead. Liberty inexplicably pooched the ensuing kickoff, and junior Clyde Bryson took advantage, returning the kick from the Broad Run 30 into Eagles' territory at the 48. The Eagles, applying pressure from their blitzing linebackers, forced two quick incompletions. The disciplined Spartan line then remained still as the anxious Eagles jumped offsides on consecutive plays, giving the Spartans a much needed first down. The penalties helped to slow the formidable Eagle pass rush as Brady had plenty of time to locate King on a hook route on the next play for a gain of 14. With just 14 seconds left, Griffis called the exact same play, with the exact same result, only this time for a touchdown. Sergi's extra point, Broad Run's twenty-first of the quarter, completed the scoring. The Spartans held on as Walters tried to get his team in position for a potentially tying field goal try, but it was not to be, as the Spartans swarmed to field to celebrate. The huge victory could not come at a better time for Broad Run as the Spartans head into their bye week before facing an undefeated Tuscarora squad and cross-town rival and perennial powerhouse Briar Woods in consecutive weeks. For now, however, it is time to savor the hard fought win in enemy territory against a big, strong, and talented opponent. This night was a night for heroes.

Tuscarora Rallies in the 4th to Defeat Broad Run 35-28 in Epic Battle On a night when both teams would honor the memory of Coach Adam Fortune by naming Tuscarora's field after him, it was the Tuscarora Huskies who would prevail following a furious fourth quarter comeback over the Broad Run Spartans by a score of 35-28. In a classic battle of power versus speed, senior running back Noah Reimers rushed for 377 yards on 38 carries and scored three touchdowns, including the game winner, to lead the Huskies to the hard-fought victory.

It was the speed of Broad Run senior receiver Marcel Mingo, however, which allowed the Spartans to strike first. After stopping Reimers and the Huskies on their first two possessions, the Spartans took over on their own 15 yard line. On 3rd and 8, quarterback Brady Reitzel (12 for 25 for 231 yards) found a streaking Mingo open down the middle and hit him in stride. A key block downfield by Spartan senior Chuck Davis allowed Mingo to sprint the rest of the way to the end zone for an 85 yard touchdown, and the Spartans led 7-0.

The Spartans were having some early success keeping Reimers in check, holding him to 40 yards on his first 9 carries. On the Huskies' third possession however, from his own 37 Reimers was able to cut back on a toss sweep, and ramble for 61 yards down to the Spartan 2. Tuscarora Head Coach Mark Burnett kept the ball in Reimers' hands, and the Harvard bound senior scored on the next play, knotting the score at 7. Riverboat gamblers have nothing on Burnett and Spartan Head Coach Matt Griffis, who each tried to convert on fourth downs in the second quarter. Burnett went for it on 4th and 12 from the Spartan 44 yard line. It looked like the Huskies might have a chance to convert, but Davis knocked a pass out of the hands of a Husky receiver and the Spartans took over. Reitzel once again found Mingo (4 catches for a career high 167 yards), this time for 17 yards. The Huskies were able to stop Reitzel on 4th and 1 from the Tuscarora 30, and took over with 7:02 left in the half. Sophomore standout Demetrius Hembry then made a big stop on 3rd down, and the Spartans were back in business. Following a pass interference call on the Huskies, Spartan senior Willie Smallwood (11 carries for 56 yards) found some running room and brought the ball down to the Tuscarora 25. Reitzel then found Davis open for a 25 yard score and Sam Sergi's extra point gave the Spartans a 14-7 lead. Following the kickoff, junior defensive tackle Brandon Steele, making the most of

his his first start of the season, sacked Husky quarterback Daniel Smith on the final play of the half, ending the Husky threat. Broad Run took the second half kickoff and three penalties by the Huskies and a 59 yard completion from Reitzel to Mingo gave the Spartans the ball on the Husky one yard line. Reitzel's sneak put the Spartans up 21-7. Now trailing by two scores, Tuscarora didn't abandon their original game plan coming in, and continued to attack the Spartans up front. Reimers found another huge hole and was able to gain 48 yards before being brought down. The Huskies didn't miss a beat as Reimers took a rare breather, as senior Ishmael Williams, making the most of a rare opportunity to tote the rock, then scored from 22 yards out,. A missed extra point by Tuscarora left the score at 21-13. The two play drive covered 70 yards in just 36 seconds. Broad Run was unable to put much together on their next drive, and Tuscarora took over on their own 36. With the Spartans having to concentrate on trying to stop Reimers and the Husky running game, Smith was able to take advantage by hitting consecutive passes for the first time on the night. Smith found a wide open receiver in senior Jason Chubbuck to convert on a 3rd and 10 before Reimers got loose again for 25 more yards. On 3rd and inches from the Spartan one yard line, Reimers was able to punch it in. Husky senior Caleb Lokey was unable to hold on to the two point conversion however, and the Spartans kept the lead, although now only up by two, 21-19. Smallwood snared the Husky kickoff and was able to return it all the way to the Spartan 49. Spartan speed was again on display as Reitzel was able to get outside of the contain end and outran the rest of the Huskies for a 51 yard touchdown. Sergi remained perfect on his extra points and the Spartan lead was 28-19 heading into the fourth quarter. A heavy dose of Reimers on the drive gave the Huskies the ball on the Spartan 36. The Spartan D stiffened, however, and Burnett had no choice but to go for it on 4th and 6 from the Spartan 32. The Spartans brought heavy pressure on the play, but Smith, who missed last week's game against Loudoun County due to a knee injury, was able to roll right and find Nicholas Speroni open for the touchdown. Reimer's two point conversion cut the Spartan lead to one, 28-27, with 8:44 left.

Clyde Bryson of the Spartans returned the ensuing kickoff to the Spartan 44 yard line. The Spartans turned to their own power running game at this point, hoping to chew some clock and put up some points. Three Smallwood runs and a Tuscarora facemask call gave the Spartans a first down on the Husky 15. On 1st and 10, Reitzel looked to one of the heroes of the Liberty win two weeks ago, but Tyriek King was unable to haul in the pass in the end zone. Runs by Reitzel and Smallwood netted nine yards, bringing up a 4th and one from the Tuscarora six yard line. Griffis, realizing that his team needed a touchdown in this spot, gave the ball to senior Jashawn Banks to try and get the first down. Although the pile appeared to move forward, the spot was just short, and the Huskies took over on downs, much to the delight of the now delirious home crowd. There was little doubt what Coach Burnett was planning as the Huskies took over on their own 5 yard line with just under five minutes left to play in the game. Four Reimers carries and 95 yards later and the Huskies had their first lead of the night. For good measure, he ran in the two point conversion to put his team up 35-28. The big blow came on another Reimers burst, this one covering 68 yards before he was brought down from behind by Spartan junior Chris Moore. The Spartans took over on their own 28. With 3:35 left, Griffis and Reitzel knew that they had plenty of time to march down the field for the tying score if they were able to convert. Reitzel hit Jaleel Robinson on first down for four yards. Chuck Davis, with defenders draped all over his back, was unable to catch the ball on second down. A third down pass attempt to Mingo fell incomplete, setting up a 4th and six. Reitzel dropped back and fired a strike to King. King was unable to haul in the pass, and the Huskies knew then that their dreams of an undefeated season were still intact as the ball fell harmlessly to the ground. With the win. the Huskies, ranked # 2 in the state by Maxpreps, move to 7-0. They travel to Potomac Falls next week to take on the Panthers. There is no rest for Coach Griffis and the Spartans (4 - 2) next week, as they host rival Briar Woods.

Spartans Rally Falls Short, Lose to Falcons 28-21

It was a great night for football. Really. Even Spartan players, coaches and fans will look back on this night, and remember that this was a truly memorable high school football game. A game like this only reinforces this as the best rivalry in Loudoun County. A game like this can make the winning team, and break the losing team. And that is why Coach Griffis was so adamant after the game in loudly praising his team. He knew that his Spartans had outgained the Falcons. He knew that they had more first downs. And he knew that this was a game that could just as easily have gone their way,

the Spartan way. But in the end, the scoreboard showed 28 for the visitors, to just 21 for the home team. But Coach Griffis has been around for awhile now. He knows that these things have a way of evening out. And that is why he heaped praise on his team for their efforts, even if they fell just a little bit short this time. He knows that there is always a next time. Things didn't start out so well for the Spartans. Briar Woods quarterback Jake Maffe came out firing, and he was able to complete long scoring strikes to senior wideout Tristan Carter and junior tight end Mark Birmingham. The Spartans were quickly down 14-0 and they were reeling. Anyone who was in the stands when the Spartans played the Liberty Eagles knows that there is no quit in this team. Tonight would be no exception. Spartan quarterback Brady Reitzel came out chucking in the second quarter. He found Chuck Davis open for a 46 yard gain before getting the ball out to junior Jaleel Robinson for the first Spartan touchdown. Following a stop by a more confident Broad Run defense, Reitzel again found Davis open, this time covering 32 yards. Reitzel would eventually sneak it in for a 1 yard touchdown run and things were all tied up at 14 as the first half drew to a close. The Spartan defense continued to have success against the Falcon offense with Maffe at the helm. So much success, in fact, that Falcon Head Coach Charlie Pierce turned to Jake's younger brother, Ben, late in the third quarter. Seeking a spark,

Page 26: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON IN REVIEW · BROAD RUN VARSITY FOOTBALL ROSTER 2014 1 Moore, Chris WR/DB 11 6'2 180 47 Raymond, Evan WR/DB 10 5'8 165 2 Davis, Chuck WR/DB 12 6'1 175

Pierce found it. Sophomore Ben Maffe plays a much different game than his older brother. Behind Ben, the Falcons employed a variation of the read option, although the younger Maffe rarely threw the ball. He was able to get to the corner for much of the third quarter and into the fourth, as the Spartan's struggled to stop this new wrinkle that had been thrown their way. Maffe ran for consecutive first downs as the third quarter came to an end with the game still tied. A quick pitch to senior speedster Brandon Polk gave the Falcons a first down on the Spartan four yard line. Maffe kept the ball on the next two plays, finally plunging in for the go-ahead score. Broad Run then went on an 18 play drive that saw each team flagged with three penalties. Davis, who had gotten his team down close on each of their previous scoring drives, was this time rewarded with a touchdown of his own, as Reitzel found him from 19 yards out. Once again the score was tied, this time at 21. Briar Woods then came out in what can only be described as a wildcat formation on their next possession. Speedy receivers Bandon Polk and Josh Thomas alternated carries and quickly marched from their own 40 yard line down to the Spartan 14. Thomas took it in for the go-ahead score. The only consolation for the Spartans and their fans was that the Falcons had scored so quickly and in doing so, had given the Spartans plenty of time to try for the tying score. The Falcons aided the Spartan drive once again with back to back penalties. After Reitzel found senior Alex Galloway open for a 16 yard completion, the Spartans found themselves with a 1st and 10 from the Briar Woods' 12 yard line. The Spartans were unable to push forward, leaving themselves with a 4th down from the nine yard line. Reitzel dropped back, and appeared to have a receiver open! He let fly with a strike down the middle, but with a defender draped over his back, senior Tyriek King was unable to haul in the pass. Everyone in the stands and on the field looked for a flag, but none was forthcoming, as the Falcons held on for a hard-fought 28-21 victory. With the win, the Falcons move to 6-1 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 4-3. After the game, Griffis was asked what he had said to his players following yet another difficult defeat. He simply pointed out that the schedule becomes more favorable, and that they still have the chance to achieve all of their goals. One question that did not have to be asked was whether or not he would like to see a rematch in the playoffs. You could see it in his eyes, as well as in the eyes of the players, that the answer to that question would be a resounding "yes".

Broad Run Gets Back on Track with 38-13 Win Over Potomac Falls Broad Run Spartan Head Coach Matt Griffis knew when the 2014 schedule came out that the middle of the season would be difficult, to say the least. Facing consecutive games againstf Stone Bridge, Liberty, Tuscarora, and Briar Woods (with a current combined recored of 29-4! ), Griffis knew that this stretch would test the make-up of his team, both mentally and physically. So, immediately following a tough no call on 4th down

in the end zone that could have tied the game in last week's loss to Briar Woods, Coach Griffis could be overheard shouting at his Spartans in his post game address. But rather than simply yelling at his players, Griffis was shouting words of encouragement to his team, telling them that he and his staff were proud of how hard they had battled and the resiliency they had shown in fighting right down to the game's final play. The Spartans would need this resiliency once again this week against the Potomac Falls Panthers, who came into this 5A tilt with an identical 4-3 record, as many of the Spartan offensive starters were affected by a stomach bug during the week. And so it was on this night that it would be the Spartan defense that would set the tempo, holding the Panthers to three yards on three rushing attempts to start the game, and quickly forcing Potomac Falls to punt. Senior Brady Reitzel (12 for 20 for 217 yards in just 3 quarters) was leading his Spartans methodically down the field with a mix of passes and runs, when he found Marcel Mingo open on the sideline for a 35 yard gain down to the Panther 2 yard line. Reitzel scored on a keeper on the next play and after

Page 29: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON IN REVIEW · BROAD RUN VARSITY FOOTBALL ROSTER 2014 1 Moore, Chris WR/DB 11 6'2 180 47 Raymond, Evan WR/DB 10 5'8 165 2 Davis, Chuck WR/DB 12 6'1 175

Sam Sergi converted the extra point, the Spartans found themselves up 7-0. Will Yancy then had a series to remember, as the senior made two tackles behind the line of scrimmage before recovering a Panther fumble. Given excellent field position following the turnover, Reitzel continued to find his receivers open, as two completions to Chuck Davis and Alex Galloway brought the ball down to the Panther 15. Potomac Falls then responded by bringing heavy pressure up the middle, resulting in two Panther sacks of Reitzel. Immediately after forcing the Spartans to turn over the ball on downs, Potomac Falls junior quarterback Brady Williams dropped back and let fly a long ball down the right sideline. Senior wideout Wayna Allen was able to come with the pass, and sprinted down the shocked Spartan sideline for a 74 yard touchdown. The Panthers were unable to convert the extra point, however, and the first quarter ended with the Spartans holding on to a one point lead. The Spartans didn't wait long to strike back, however. After a nice return by senior Calvin Strahin that gave them the ball on their own 42, junior Clyde Bryson showed some burst in a 17 yard run. Three straight carries by Jashawn Banks netted 12 yards and another first down. Sophomore quarterback Kyle Brickerd, in for Reitzel at quarterback for the series, found senior Andre Chinnery for a 24 yard gain down to the Panther 7. Willie Smallwood then took it in from the 5 and after Sergi's extra point, the Spartan lead was 14-6. On the ensuing possession, Junior Matt Meier's big tackle behind the line of scrimmage forced another Panther punt, and with Reitzel back in, the Spartans moved from their own 41 down to the Panther 13. After

the offense stalled, Griffis called on Sergi once again, and the senior placekicker was true from 30 yards out to put the Spartans up by 11 at halftime. Early in the third quarter, first year Panther Head Coach Jason Allen, sensing that his team needed a spark, rolled the dice and tried a fake punt on 4th and 8 from midfield. The Spartans were ready, however and the attempt fell six yards short. The Spartans were unable to capitalize and after trading punts, found themselves backed up to their own 13 yard line. Sophomore Meech Hembry, in at running back, ripped off a 47 yard gain, only to have

the play nullified by a holding call. Backed up now to his own 10, Reitzel then found Chuck Davis on a crossing pattern and hit him in stride, and Davis did the rest, taking it 90 yards for the touchdown. Trailing now by a score of 24-6, the Panthers abandoned the running game, and came out firing. The Spartan secondary put the clamps on, however, and took over on downs following four straight incompletions by Potomac Falls. That burst that Bryson showed earlier? The junior showed that he was just getting started, as he sprinted through the Panther defense on consecutive possessions for a 50 yard touchdown, and then another from 38 yards out. The Spartans were then able to empty their benches in the fourth quarter, giving some valuable experience to their underclassman while getting some much needed rest for the starters. Late in the game, Kash Jackson would close out the scoring, as the Panther sophomore took it in from 15 yards out, making the final score 38-13. Coach Griffis had to be pleased with the balance shown by his offense, as the Spartans rolled up 218 rushing yards and 217 passing yards. Bryson led the way on the ground, churning out 113 yards on only 5 carries. Davis led the Spartan receivers with 122 yards on 5 catches, as the Spartans outgained the Panthers on Senior Night at Potomac Falls, 435-192. The Spartans have a big game scheduled next week for Homecoming, as the Woodgrove Wolverines come to town with a record of 6-2 after rallying to defeat Dominion on Friday. The Panthers will travel to downtown Brambleton to face the 7-1 Briar Woods Falcons.

Broad Run Holds Off Furious Woodgrove Comeback in Homecoming Victory

Spartans Put Game Away with Epic 4th Quarter Drive to Seal the Deal With 8:35 left in the second quarter of Friday night's Homecoming game against the Woodgrove Wolverines, Broad Run Head Coach Matt Griffis looked up at the scoreboard and saw that his Spartans were already leading by a score of 20-0. Something told him on this Halloween night that things aren't always as they seem, and that it would get more than a little tricky later as the game wore on. The Spartans came flying out to start, scoring touchdowns on their first four possessions. Willie Smallwood got things started early, as the senior plunged into the end zone from a yard out following a defensive stop of the Wolverines on their first possession. The Spartan D quickly forced another punt, and this time it was sophomore Meech Hembry who found the end zone, exploiting a seam down the middle created by his offensive line that resulted in a 18 yard touchdown run. Both teams were hit with unsportsmanlike conduct penalties after the score, and in a quirky ruling, the Spartans had to attempt the extra point from the 9 yard line. Sam Sergi's extra point attempt sailed just left of the goal post and the Spartans led 13-0 with 2:49 left in the 1st quarter. Yet another stop by the Spartan D gave quarterback Brady Reitzel the ball once again. This drive would culminate in a 25 yard pass play from Reitzel to Chuck Davis (6 catches for 95 yards) as the lead was extended to 20-0. Woodgrove finally found some traction on their fourth drive of the night as senior quarterback Billy Sheehan found sophomore receiver Mason Gryniuk on a 13 yard pass to cut the Spartan lead to 13. With yet another solid return by the Spartan special teams, Reitzel once again led the Spartans down the field before taking off after a beautiful fake that left the entire Wolverine sideline shaking their heads in disbelief. The 32 yard touchdown run looked to give the Spartans a seemingly insurmountable 27-7 lead right before halftime. However, there would be no quit in the Wolverines on this night. With less than two minutes to go before the Homeciming festivities, Sheehan was able to connect with his favorite target, senior Dylon Mellor (7 catches for 86 yards) in the corner of the end zone. The extra point made the score 27-14 at the half, but more importantly, gave the Wolverines some sorely needed momentum for the second half.

The Wolverines were finally able to stop the potent Spartan offense on their fifth drive of the night to begin the 3rd quarter, and their own offense took advantage, as running back Uzoma Kpaduwa punched it into the end zone from 1 yard out. The Spartan lead had been cut to just six, 27-21, midway through the third quarter, and for the first time of the night, there was genuine concern on the faces of the Spartans.

Page 33: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON IN REVIEW · BROAD RUN VARSITY FOOTBALL ROSTER 2014 1 Moore, Chris WR/DB 11 6'2 180 47 Raymond, Evan WR/DB 10 5'8 165 2 Davis, Chuck WR/DB 12 6'1 175

On the ensuing possession, Griffis, who has a seemingly endless supply of talented backs to run the ball, turned to an unlikely source as senior wideout Marcel Mingo took a handoff from Reitzel and sprinted 21 yards for the touchdown, pushing the Spartan lead back to 13 with fifteen minutes left in the game. Once again, the resilient Wolverines battled back, as Sheehan turned to Mellor on consecutive pass plays. Mellor, who seems to catch anything

thrown in his general direction, was able to haul in his second touchdown grab of the night, this time from 9 yards out. Following a missed extra point, the Spartan lead stood at 34-27. Reitzel, who led the Spartans in rushing with 57 yards on the night while passing for 170, kept the Wolverines off balance once again while deftly mixing the run in with his high percentage passes. Up by 7 with 11 minutes left, Griffis turned to his senior kicker to try and give the Spartans a two possession lead when the drive stalled on the Wolverine 5 yard line. Sam Sergi did not disappoint as he drilled the 22 yarder and the lead was pushed to 37-27. The Woodgrove offense then did their part, putting together another crisp touchdown drive in just under two minutes. This time Sheehan found his tight end, Matthew Whalen, open down the middle, and the senior hauled it in for a 15 yard touchdown. The Spartan lead had been cut to 3 with 9:13 left in the contest. On a night when his offense would score on six of their nine possessions, Griffis noted that it was on a drive that they didn't score that turned out to be the most impressive one of the night. Taking over on their own 30 yard line, Broad Run went on a drive that they won't soon forget, converting on third downs of 5, 2 and 7 yards to keep the ball away from the Wolverines. Watching the Spartans milk the clock with their slow, steady march down the field, the Wolverines were helpless to stop them and never did get the ball back. The Spartans breathed a collective sigh of relief as they came out in their victory formation to close out this hard-fought battle, 37-34. Broad Run totaled 393 yards of total offense for the night, while Woodgrove finished with 360 after their slow start. Balance was the theme of the night for Broad Run, as five different Spartans scored, six if you include Sergi's all important field goal. An astounding six Spartans carried for twenty yards or more as Broad Run would finish with 223 yards rushing to go along with Reitzel's 170 yards passing. With the big win, along with Briar Woods' shocking 8-7 loss to Potomac Falls and a Falls Church loss to Hayfield, the Spartans now find themselves sitting as the 4th seed in the playoff standings. The Spartans will look to cement that 4th seed next Friday during Senior Night against the Freedom Eagles, as Coach Griffis seeks his 40th career win, against only 17 losses. Woodgrove (6-3) looks to get back on the winning track before they make their own playoff run, as they face cross town rival Loudoun Valley in their final regular season game.

Spartan Seniors Go Out in Style in 63-0 Win Over Freedom

Reitzel Throws for 5 TD Passes in Just 20 Minutes! Looking back on their 2014 schedule as they prepared for their regular season finale against the Freedom Eagles, the Broad Run Spartans had a lot to be proud of. Eight of their first nine opponents would finish with records of .500 or better. All eight of those teams would go on to qualify for the playoffs in their respective divisions. There was also a very big win over Liberty that prevented the Eagles from finishing their regular season undefeated, and the hard fought loss to undefeated Tusacarora, the only game all year that the Huskies trailed going into the 4th quarter. Although the Spartans had all but locked up the # 4 seed in the 5A North bracket heading into the Senior Night contest against Freedom, this would be no time to let up.

1st Team All-District quarterback and team captain Brady Reitzel, who still somehow manages to be underrated, got the scoring started early and often in his last regular season game as a Spartan. After his defensive mates forced a three and out on the first Eagle possession, Reitzel marched his Spartans down the field before finding Tyriek King open for a 15 yard touchdown. Sam Sergi then made the first of what would turn out to be nine consecutive extra points made by Broad Run kickers, and the Spartans were up 7-0. Spartan coach Matt Griffis then turned to

the pooch kick, and was rewarded with consecutive recoveries, the first by Nick Drake and the second by fellow senior Jeff Boynton. In between, Reitzel ran it in from 5 yards out for the second score before finding Andre Chinnery open on a 16 yard completion following the second recovery for the game's third score. The Spartans quickly found themselves up 21-0 only five minutes into the game. With Freedom unable to get anything going on offense, the Spartans took over and Reitzel turned to Chinnery once again for this third touchdown pass of the quarter from 15 yards out. Not quite done, Reitzel then found fellow three year starter Chuck Davis open for a 46 yard catch and run that made the score 35-0 with eight seconds left in the first quarter. The Eagles were then able to mount a mini-drive which resulted in a first down as well as their only penetration into Spartan territory on the night. Unfortunately for Freedom, a procedure call went against them, forcing them back into their own half of the field and they were soon forced to punt. Reitzel wasn't finished yet, as he found Marcel Mingo for a 17 yard pass which resulted in his fifth touchdown pass of the evening.

Page 37: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON IN REVIEW · BROAD RUN VARSITY FOOTBALL ROSTER 2014 1 Moore, Chris WR/DB 11 6'2 180 47 Raymond, Evan WR/DB 10 5'8 165 2 Davis, Chuck WR/DB 12 6'1 175

Griffis then turned the reigns over to Broad Run's future QB, as sophomore Kyle Brickerd led consecutive drives down the field, each resulting in touchdowns for the Spartans. Davis ran the first one in from 26 yards out, followed by Alex Galloway's 10 yard burst into the end zone which closed out the scoring in the first half, 56-0. With a running clock, Griffis watched his sophomores and juniors march down the field in impressive fashion to begin the second half. The younger Spartans held the ball for the entire third quarter before calling upon senior Jeff Boynton to punch it in from the 4 yard line to complete the scoring as the whistle blew to signal the end of the 3rd quarter. Will Sherman's extra point try was true and resulted in the final score of 63-0. The Spartan defense, led by seniors Jack Hawkins and Will Yancey up front, Nick Drake and Meech Hembrey in the middle, and Davis and junior Chris Moore in the secondary, held the Eagles to just 11 yards of total offense on the night in pitching their first shutout since last season's game against these same Eagles. Reitzel finished 7 of 8 for 149 yards, as Davis, King, Chinnery, and Mingo each finished with more than 30 yards receiving. That balance was even more prevalent in the running game, as twelve different Spartans were credited with carries totaling 207 yards. Griffis and his coaches were obviously pleased with the outcome, as the squad made it through with no serious injuries, and some of the hard working underclassman were able to log some meaningful minutes. In his post-game speech to his squad, Griffis reminded his group of how hard they have worked throughout the season, but that even more work, concentration, and effort would be required as they prepared for their "second season." He closed by imploring this group to go out there and "create some memories." The Spartans hope to do just that on Friday at 6:00 pm, as they host the high scoring (29.5 PPG) Halifax County Comets from South Boston. If the Spartans are fortunate enough to win that game, by virtue of their # 4 seed, the Spartans would then host the winner of the Mountain View Wildcats/Briar Woods Falcons contest to be played in downtown Brambleton.

Spartans Defeat Comets 59-0 in Round of 16 For winning seven of their ten regular season contests and playing a very daunting schedule in the process, the Broad Run Spartans were rewarded for their efforts with a # 4 seed in the 5A Northern Region. By finishing as the # 4 seed, Broad Run Coach Matt Griffis knew that his Spartans would be guaranteed two home games in this year's playoffs, but only if they could get past their first round opponent, the Hanover County Wildcats. The Comets, seeded # 13, came into Friday's game with a 5-5 record, and were also forced to endure a five hour bus ride from their home in South Boston, near the border of North Carolina.

Since they come from well over 200 miles away, not much was known about the Comets prior to game time. Coach Griffis knew that the Comets could score, as evidenced by the 32.5 points they had averaged over their last five contests, but he also knew that his team would be able to score, as the Comets had given up 35 PPG during that same stretch. Perhaps what Griffis could not anticipate was, when it was all said and done, just how well his team would play and how easy it would be to advance to the Round of 8 and a rematch and cross-town rival, Briar Woods.

Things didn't look all that promising for the Spartans as the game began, as the Comets quickly moved the ball into Spartan territory on the game's first drive. After back to back first downs, Comet sophomore quarterback James Smith inexplicably heaved the ball down towards the end zone, resulting in an easy interception for Broad Run corner Chris Moore. Brady Reitzel and his offensive teammates took over on their own 5 yard line, but were able to cover thosee 95 yards in only three plays, as Reitzel found wide out Jaleel Robinson open from midfield after consecutive first downs and Robinson did the rest, taking it in for a 50 yard score. All-District kicker Sam Sergi made the extra point and the Spartans were off and running. Senior captain Alex West recovered the ensuing kickoff for the Spartans. The Spartans wasted little time scoring on the possession, and Reitzel's second touchdown pass of the game, this one to Chuck Davis from 11 yards out, put the Spartans up by 14 as the 1st quarter came to a close. By the time the 2nd quarter began, the Spartan defense had the Comets on lockdown, and forced a three and out. A nine play drive for the Spartans offense, ending in a Willie Smallwood touchdown run from three yards out, put them up by 21. Chuck Davis, energized by some trash talking by the visitors, was then able to pick off a pass by Smith, and aided by a devastating block downfield by Jashawn Banks, took it 71 yards for the touchdown and a 28-0 lead. The Spartan defense kept the heat on the Comets on the next possession. Sophomore Connor Gorey, living out a lineman's dream, was able to pick off Smith's next pass and

returned it 36 inches to the Comet 43 yard line. Fellow sophomore Meech Hembry found a huge hole up the middle from two yards out, and the lead stood at 35-0 following Sergi's fifth extra point conversion of the half. Smallwood deftly picked off a shuttle pass attempt by the Comets on the next possession. Following the first stalled drive of the night for the Spartans, Griffis elected to send in Sergi on 4th and 16 from the Comet's 24yard line. Despite near freezing conditions, Sergi was able to make the 41 yard field goal and the lead stood at 38 as the first half came to a close. In the second half, the Spartan coaches were able to give some deserving seniors and underclassman some valuable experience and memories. Junior Clyde Bryson sprinted past the Comets early in the third quarter for another long touchdown run, this one covering 47 yards. On the next Spartan possession, sophomore Kyle Brickerd executed a beautiful quarterback draw and rushed into the end zone from 6 yards out. Classmate Jayden Bunting closed out the rout with another 6 yard touchdown run. Will Sherman's extra point made the final score 59-0. The Spartans outgained the Comets by a margin of 400 to 62. Broad Run pitched consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2011. The defense forced 5 turnovers and completely shut down the Comet's offense. Bryson led the balanced rushing attack with 61 yards on 5 carries, while Robinson paced the receivers with 64 yards on 3 receptions. Reitzel and Brickerd combined to hit on 67% of their passes, totaling 177 yards. With the playoff win behind them, Griffis and his staff now turn all of their attention to the Briar Woods Falcons. By virtue of their # 4 seed, the Spartans will host next Friday's quarter-final. The Falcons, entering the playoffs on a rare two game losing street, broke open a close game at halftime in eliminating the Mountain View Wildcats from the playoffs for the second consecutive year, this time by the score of 50-13. No one in Ashburn who was at last year's playoff game can forget Briar Woods' thrilling 37-34 overtime victory in Brambleton. Griffis implored his troops to keep working hard following Briar's thrilling victory earlier this year, knowing that there was a good chance that these two programs would find themselves matched up once again. The Spartans and Falcons will once again meet in the playoffs, this time on Broad Run's home field. Quite simply, it is a game that you don't want to miss.

Spartans Exercise Demons in Thrilling 17-15 Win over Falcons

Big games should have big plays, don't you think? In a game as big for the Broad Run Spartans and the Briar Woods Falcons as it gets, here is the rundown of the big plays that shaped yet another epic battle between these two neighborhood rivals. Big Play # 1 - All-District center Shane Faett and All-District quarterback Brady Reitzel were unable to connect on the snap, turning he ball over to the Falcons on the Spartan 30 yard line. This is the first fumble on the exchange all season between the two. Big Play # 2- On the next play from scrimmage, Jake Maffe drops back and lets fly, finding a wide open Tristan Carter for the touchdown. Big Pay # 3 - Junior defensive back Chris Moore, still smarting from getting beat on the touchdown pass, comes off the edge and blocks the Falcons' extra point attempt. Big Play # 4 - In a game where points would be hard to come by, Falcon kicker Jackson Funke connects on his 33 yard attempt, pushing the Briar lead to 9. Big Play # 5- Broad Run junior Clyde Bryson emerges untouched on a perfectly executed draw play for a 17 yard touchdown, getting the Spartans back into this one. Big Play # 6 - On 4th and 4, Marcel Mingo takes a swing pass from Reitzel and jukes his way into the end zone from 35 yards out. Sam Sergi makes both of his extra points so the Spartans now lead 14 to 6. Big Play # 7 - With only a few seconds left in the half and from deep in their own territory, the Falcons heave the ball downfield, only to have senior Chuck Davis intercept the pass, leading to... Big Play # 8 - In the cold November air, with only seconds remaining before halftime, Sergi rushes out to attempt a 41 yard field goal. The field goal is good, and the Spartans go to the locker room at half time up by a score of 17 to 9. Big Play # 9 - Following a scoreless third quarter, the Falcons were finally able to move the ball in the waning minutes of the fourth. Still, with under a minute to go, the Falcons face a 3rd and 15 situation from their own side of the field. Jake Maffe avoids the blitz and heaves his pass to the left. Tristan Carter comes up with the big catch only seconds before the clock winds down.

Big Play # 10- Maffe is able to connect with Mark Birmingham for the touchdown, cutting he Spartan lead to 17-15. Big Play # 11 Maffe finds an open receiver for an apparent two point conversion and a tie ball game, but there are penalty flags all over. A player (or two) was moving for Briar Woods. Big Play # 12 -From the nine yard line, Maffe throws to the corner of the end zone, where the play is broken up by Chuck Davis. The ball falls hamlessly to the ground and the Spartans begin their celebration! The Falcons finish their season 8-4 while the Spartans move to 9-3. Just another epic tilt in the Barkyard Brawl!

Huskies Remain Undefeated as Spartans Finish at 9-4

At Broad Run High School, the pre-season goals are always lofty ones, and this year was no different as the Spartans looked to improve upon last year's Final Eight finish in the 5A playoffs. Coming into their regional semi-final against the Tuscarora Huskies, the Spartans defense was playing their best ball of the year, having pitched back to back shutouts against Freedom High School and Halifax County before holding their archrival Briar Woods to 15 points in a riveting quarterfinal victory a week earlier.

There would be little mystery in this match-up, as the Huskies clearly hoped to be able to run the ball with Virginia High School Gatorade Player of the Year Noah Reimers. The Spartans knew that to have a chance in this game, they would at least have to contain Reimers, while also trying to be sure to limit Husky quarterback Daniel Smith on the rare occasions when he didn't turn around and hand the ball off. Spartan coach Matt Griffis looked to set the tempo early, as Broad Run won the toss but elected to defer. The strategy appeared to pay

off, as the Huskies were faced with a 4th and 1 from their own 44 on the game's first series. However, Husky Head Coach Mark Burnett gambled and won, as junior quarterback Daniel Smith was able to successfully sneak up the middle for a big first down. Reimers found paydirt on the very next play, bursting through a hole on the right side and scoring from 54 yards out. The Spartans, crisp and concise on offense in the first meeting between these two teams, were unable to put together any momentum. Despite a big stop from the defense following a Spartan turnover on their first possession, the offense didn't fare any better on their second possession, and Reimers soon added his second touchdown on the day. Trailing 14-0, the Spartans showed the same resiliency and determination that had become so familiar throughout this season. The Spartan defense was able to force a turnover, with sophomore Meech Hembrey recovering a Reimers fumble on the Tuscarora 33 yard line. Nothing would come easy for the Spartans on this day, as even this short drive required two crucial third down conversions. However, following a Reitzel to King touchdown that was aided by yet another fine downfield block after the catch by Marcel Mingo, the Spartans found themselves only trailing by a single score with just over seven minutes left in the half, 14-7. The problem when you score against Tuscarora is that you then have to kick the ball back to them, thus giving Reimers yet another opportunity to hurt you. Reimers and his powerful, cohesive offensive line spent the next seven minutes grinding out yard after yard. Make no mistake, the Spartan defense was making him earn every yard, but earn it he did. Two more fourth down conversions by Reimers and another important quarterback sneak by Smith and the Huskies went into the locker room up by a score of 21-7. Following the break, Broad Run emerged with a sense of urgency. The Spartans moved the ball on their first drive of the second half, able to convert two third downs of their own. Reitzel then turned once again to Chuck Davis, but Tuscarora safety Anthony Zorb was

able to haul in the pass intended for Davis. The interception at that time might have seemed like too much to overcome, but the Spartan defense, now playing with reckless abandon, was able to force the Huskies into a 3rd and long from Husky territory. The Spartans brought heavy pressure, but the elusive Smith slipped several tackles and while rolling to his left, found a streaking Jordan Fisher open for a 40 yard gain. Reimers soon after plunged in from a yard out and the Huskies were now up by three scores. Reimers, a Harvard commit, kept running hard, and in the fourth quarter, after being stopped cold for little or no gain on the previous two plays, broke loose once again in the secondary, scoring this time from 53 yards out. Down 35-7 the Spartans showed why they have four playoff wins in their last two seasons. The Spartans kept working hard, and found paydirt with just under five minutes to play, as Reitzel connected with Davis one final time, this one resulting in a 21 yard touchdown that closed out the day's scoring. With the 35-14 victory, the 13-0 Huskies have earned the right to host the 5A North Regional Championship game at Fortune Field in Leesburg.against the only other undefeated 5A team in the region, the Massaponax Panthers, with the winner of that game advancing to the state championship final in Charlottesville. For the second straight year, the Broad Run Spartans end their season with a record of 9-4, losing in the regional semi-final to the eventual regional champion. This year's team has a great deal to be proud of, even as they fell just short of their lofty goals. They finished the year ranked # 21 in the state in Maxpreps.com, were ranked # 783 in the entire country out of over 16,000 varsity teams. Time heals all wounds they say. Plus, this group of players and coaches will always have that little ol' playoff win against Briar Woods, and even years from now, no one can ever take that away from them.
