Ophthalmology as a AN interesting paper withthe above title wasTask of- Social published in the last issiIb of the Bulletin of-;.Hygiene the Czechoslovak MedicalAssociation, by Pro-

fessor Loewenstein. It amounts to a'plea for improved teaching ofsocial hygiene as a means of preventioh of blindness and preserva-tion of sight. While we pcssess a great numb&r-of statistics ofblinidness, there is a lack in the classification of the causes and aninternational classification is needed. This is under preparation bythe! International Association for the Prevention of Blindness.Loewenstein refers to one of the best statistics of blindness, drawnup by Dr. Zahor, of Praha, in 1935. This paper refers to the blindin Bohemia. Among a population of 7,109,376, were 4,037 blindcivi-lians and 316 blind soldiers. The percentage per 1,000 inhabi-tants is given and appears to be slightly lower than the officialfigures for the whole republic, which includes Moravia and Slovakia(the latter with far higher trachoma frequency). The main groupsare due to venereal disease (1 8-2.per cent.), predominantly congenitalor- affections of the newly born, injuries (151 per cent.), andcongenital blindness (aXbout 10 per cent.). Zahor does not take intoaccount " a special group of cases due to hereditary diseases, whichother statistics assume to be 20-30 per cent. of all cases of blindness."About 2 per cent. of cases are due to -glaucoma. Loewensteinproceeds to outline his ideas on the measures which he thinksnecessary.

THE meetings of the Section of OphthalmologyRoyal Sciety oXf during the session 1942-43 will be held asMedicine
