More about britainGreat Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and Northern Ireland.

Contents

scotland The Land of Thistle & Heather Scotland is a haven of purity, beauty, wilderness and romance. Its ruggedness, honesty and authenticity makes it one of the most interesting countries in the world. This evocative nature coupled with the buzz-world of film, celebrity, challenge, adventure and reality makes Scotland a must-see country.

England England is the lifeblood of Great Britain and has had a huge impact on the history of the world. All the regions of England are easily accessible from the capital city, London, famous for its history, culture and pageantry. With its pomp and pageantry, wonderful idiosyncrasies and vibrant diversity, today’s England is friendly, welcoming, fascinating and fun.

WalEs A small country with a lot to offer. With dramatic mountains, spectacular seashores, tumbling rivers, fresh green valleys and Europe’s largest concentrations of medieval fortresses, it is a real gem. The Welsh have a unique culture, language and heritage that distinguish them from the English. Although best known for their unpronounceable place names, roaring men’s choirs and fierce Rugby teams - this is a friendly and hospitable nation.

northErn irElandNorthern Ireland is a land of immense variety, with wave swept coastal drives, hazy mountains, vast open moorland, loughs and glassy lakes, heavy with fish. There are intriguing towns and villages, tucked away or cosmopolitan cities, each with their own history and culture. Compact and accessible, it’s a region you can tour at your own pace.

london – one of the world’s great cities – merits that title not just on sheer size but through its influence on history, commerce and the world of the arts and ideas. For the student of history, London is a vast tapestry whose elements are Roman, Saxon, Norman, Medieval, Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian and the modern day. For the tourist, there is an abundance of treasures: museums, galleries, theatres, nightlife and old English taverns... to name just a few.

The story of London starts with the invasion of Britain in AD43, when the Roman legions moved up from the Kentish Coast and crossed the Thames at what is now Lambeth. The building of the first bridge over the Thames then set the course for London’s continued growth over the past two thousand years.

No-one can say they have truly travelled until they have visited this great city and spent a few days, weeks, months or even years enthralled by the past, present and future possibilities of London.

perfect london and manchester locations.

Take a close look at the hotel addresses and you realise something wonderful – they enjoy perfect locations. On Leicester Square, or fifty yards from Oxford Street, or in the heart of Covent Garden, or even overlooking the British Museum. It takes all the stress away – ‘easy walking distance’ means just that – everything happens right on your doorstep.

may Fair The location in the heart of Mayfair. The famous service. The space and luxury. It has been this way ever since the day in 1927 when King George V declared the May Fair open.

hampshire The location – overlooking the West End’s most famous square – is exceptional. It places you in the heart of theatreland. The hotel has a distinct buzz – Europe’s biggest film premiere’s often hold first night parties here.

Berkshire Overlooking Oxford Street, in the heart of the West End. The hotel has a fascinating history – back in the 1920s this was a favourite hotel for the horse-racing world. Newly redesigned, the Berkshire is filled with commissioned artworks.

mountbatten In the heart of Covent Garden and theatreland, Built in 1904, the hotel was re-opened in 1985 by Patricia, Countess Mountbatten of Burma and named after Earl Mountbatten, mementoes of whom are displayed in the lobby.

grafton On Tottenham Court Road in the West End, puts Regent’s Park, the British Museum and Soho right on your doorstep. We hope you’ll enjoy the designer furniture and furnishings – and our collection of eastern art including Qing dynasty temple bells.

kenilworth Bright and elegant, in a prime location just 50 metres from the British Museum in Bloomsbury, in the centre of the West End. The mood is tranquil with deluxe new facilities and a well-displayed fine art collection.

sussex Just off Oxford Street, close to Marble Arch, puts you in the heart of the West End. Now completely redesigned, features lighting and furniture from Italian designers.

Vanderbilt Located in South Kensington and within walking distance of Harrods, the Kings Road, Hyde Park and the great museums, puts you in the heart of London’s most fashionable quarter. Formerly the London home of the Vanderbilt family.

manchester The historic location places you at the heart of Manchester city centre. You are right next to the G-Mex and MICC Conference Centres as well as the Bridgewater Hall and many of the city’s finest galleries bars and restaurants.

carnaby street, londonCarnaby Street is a street in London, in the district of Soho, near Oxford Street. Carnaby Street was made popular by followers of the Mod style in the 1960s, and became closely associated with the Swinging Sixties, when many independent music shops, fashion boutiques, and designers such as Mary Quant were located there.

Today, Carnaby Street is more mainstream, being mostly chain stores and restaurants, with few independent outlets, and is popular with young shoppers and tourists.

thE giant’s caUsEWay The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. It is located on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland, about two miles (3 km) north of the town of Bushmills. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, and a National Nature Reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland.

In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant’s Causeway was named as the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven and eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (36 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres thick in places. The Giant’s Causeway is today owned and managed by the National Trust and it is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland.

scottish Kiltthe kilt is a knee-length garment with pleats at the rear, originating in the traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands of the 16th century. Since the 19th century it has become associated with the wider culture of Scotland in general, or with Celtic (and more specifically Gaelic) heritage even more broadly. It is most often made of woollen cloth in a tartan pattern.Although the kilt is most often worn on formal occasions and at Highland games and sports events, it has also been adapted as an item of fashionable informal male clothing in recent years, returning to its roots as an everyday garment.

loch nEssis a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extending for approximately 37km southwest of Inverness. Its surface is 15.8m above sea level. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster.

the loch ness monster (Scottish Gaelic: Niseag) is reputed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and around the world, though its description varies from one account to the next. Popular interest and belief in the animal has varied since it was brought to the world’s attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with minimal and much-disputed photographic material and sonar readings.

The scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a modern-day myth, and explains sightings as a mix of hoaxes and wishful thinking. Despite this, it remains one of the most famous examples of cryptozoology. The legendary monster has been affectionately referred to by the nickname Nessie (Scottish Gaelic: Niseag) since the 1950s.

One of the most iconic images of Nessie is known as the "Surgeon's Photograph". Its importance lies in the fact that it was the first photo and only photographic evidence of a “head and neck” – all the others are humps or disturbances.

gUinnEss is a popular dry stout that originated in Arthur Guinness’ first brewery in Leixlip, Co Kildare but it then moved to its present home at St. James’s Gate in Dublin. The beer is based on the porter style that originated in London in the early 18th century. It is one of the most successful beer brands in the world, being exported worldwide.

The distinctive feature in the flavour is the roasted barley which remains unfermented. For many years a portion of the beer was aged to give a sharp lactic flavour, but Guinness has refused to confirm if this still occurs. The thick creamy head is the result of the beer being mixed with nitrogen when being served.

It is extremely popular with the Irish and, in spite of a decline in consumption over recent years, is the best-selling alcoholic drink of all time in Ireland, where Guinness & Co. makes almost €2 billion’s worth annually.

the kilt is a knee-length garment with pleats at the rear, originating in the traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands of the 16th century.
