Bringing Performance Alive in Education

For young people making choices about their courses, university or college and career are a major life transition – one that requires careful thought, planning and work. There are probably two questions they will need to ask:

• What do I want to do?

• How do I get there from here?

The first question deals with how well they know themselves, their strengths, their desires – their GOALS. The second is about the process of how to get there.

For parents, if their child chooses the wrong course or worse, drops out of university, the fees could become very expensive.TH

“Who Am I?”

The more you understand about yourself, the better your decisions will be and the more effectively you will be able to implement those decisions. Knowing your abilities, skills, interests and values are equally as important as having the information about the courses, their availability, entrance requirements etc.

As an example these may be some questions one might ask:

• Is university the right choice for me? Could I get the skills I need in a more vocational way?• Would a gap year give me more confidence?• What kind of study environment would get the best out of me?• Would a university/college closer to home be more secure?• What motivates me to do my best?

As an organisation we are now in the third year of delivering this programme to secondary schools and sixth form colleges in the South West of England. In essence we are starting the personal development process with 16 to 18 year olds, whilst they are still in education. What we have found and continue to find, is the expectation of these students to make difficult choices about their futures and careers at a very early age is a very real and at times intimidating situation. As a business operating in the public, private and voluntary sectors we are able to offer real life experiences of the world of work and prepare these young people with the skills and knowledge that appeals to employers in current markets.

Bringing Performance Alive in Education was developed in conjunction with Dr. Helen Wright, formerly Headmistress of St. Mary’s School, Calne and now Headmistress of Ascham School Australia and students, teachers, parents and employers. We are a recognised Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Approved Centre for learning and have developed our workshops to be the first step in building self-awareness and emotional intelligence, probably the least explored by schools but a very fundamental part of choosing the right course, apprenticeship, university or job.Rachael Bruck-Payne

5 key stages of implementation

1. Introductory Meeting We will arrange a time to come and discuss all the options that are available to you and your school and how the programme could be rolled out.

2. Teacher Implementation In the initial stage we advise that having teacher participation and understanding prior to the student completion stage embeds the structure, information distribution and confidence into the school.

3. Student Programme Presentation This presentation is typically conducted at on open evening or parent/teacher conference. This gains student interest and parental support.

4. Student Workshops Conducted in student groups of approximately twenty to twenty-five.

5. Follow up Sessions Once the programme is complete, we will review the process and outcomes with your school co-ordinator, explaining the research gathered on the trends we have identified within that particular student year.

My wife and I want you to know how grateful we are for Stewart’s extraordinary support and professionalism from the facilitators and staff at Bringing Performance Alive in Education. Josie and Rachael were very flexible with Stewart’s needs and both tutors are extremely professional. The programme has contributed to our son being ready for a consistent future. It has clearly helped both his self-awareness and his academic confidence in thinking ahead.

Bruck Payne Associates, after much consultation, came into Royal Wootton Bassett Academy to deliver the Bringing Performance Alive in Education programme to our current Y12 students. After completing the process students indicated in all feedback that they now had a much better understanding of their psychological type which they viewed as important in making well considered decisions regarding their next steps post 18. At all times the team from Bruck Payne Associates were professional, approachable and most importantly could relate to the individual student. Having seen the benefits to the students from their increased self-awareness this is definitely a programme the Academy would be looking to implement again in the future.

Recommendations

During my GCSE year at school, I was trying to identify what were my “next steps”. This was a difficult decision for me, as no one choice seemed the right option. I was introduced to Josie Payne and the Bringing Performance Alive in Education programme and found my feedback session extremely insightful, making the right options for me seem much clearer. This course gave me the notions that I needed to work in the sports and leisure industry and most of all it clarified what I wanted to do with my future. The tutors are all amazing: interesting, knowledgeable and experienced. Josie and Rachael have the charisma and passion for what they do, that everyone should have!

We at Bruck Payne Associates already work with individuals, teams and organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. We know that effective future leaders and managers need to understand and accept themselves; that they are clear about their values, strengths and weaknesses. We recommend that their understanding needs to start at the beginning of a career not half way through.

We are pleased to announce that Dr Helen Wright, our firmest supporter of Bringing Performance Alive in Education will be taking the programme to Australia in 2014.
