Brilliant Brighton Farm and rural attractions from around the UK gathered at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Brighton for the annual National Farm Attractions Network (NFAN) conference, exhibition and awards, celebrating the best in farm parks and countryside attractions. The theme of the conference was “people are our business” focusing on customer service excellence, trends in catering and social media marketing. Mark Russell at the Art of Brilliance, urged delegates to have a positive attitude and think differently to be the best you can possibly be and improve customer service. Rick Turner from The BIG Sheep shared his experiences of applying the principles of the Art of Brilliance to his business. Chris Brown at Turpin Smale Catering Consultants challenged delegates to visit coffee shops, bakeries and street food vendors for inspiration. These sectors are growing and farm attractions can learn from them by daring to be different and personalising their catering offer. Katie Milbourne from Walby Farm Park shared their secrets to increasing catering sales. And Chris Mitchell from the Genuine Dining Co gave an insight into catering operations in a different sector and the way his company is incorporating new food trends and presentation into contract catering. With adults on average spending 80 minutes a day on social media, Anita Waddell at Agility Marketing explained the potential of cost-effective social media marketing, using Odds Farm Park as a case study. Nicky Hyde gave a case study presentation on Cannon Hall Farm’s top 10 social media wins. Colin Evans, NFAN chairman said, “This year’s annual conference and trade exhibition has been the biggest yet. It is heartening to see the sector growing and developing. Delegates were able to visit two great Sussex farm attractions during the three-day conference, and I’d like to thank Fishers Adventure Farm Park and Knockhatch Adventure Park for their hospitality.” The NFAN annual awards dinner was sponsored by Lappset Creative with wine sponsored by Timberplay. Day Maker Award

Lifetime Achievement Award

The AGM, held at the annualconference in Brighton, sawthe election of NFAN’smanagement committee.

Our thanks go to Andrew Wolfe ofWillows Activity Farm and RichardWaring (NFAN Treasurer) fromRand Farm Park who have madetremendous contributions to thecommittee and have now stooddown. We welcome KatieMilbourn from Walby Farm Parkand Sally Jackson from the PinkPig who have joined thecommittee.

Richard Powell from Park HallFarm has now taken on theresponsibilities of Treasurer.

There was a standing ovation asAndrew Wolfe from WillowsActivity Farm in Hertfordshire wasnamed recipient of the LifetimeAchievement Award.

Andrew said: “I’m humbled toreceive this award from NFAN – it isa huge honour to be a part of thisinspiring group of people who aresimply brilliant at what they do.”

Presenting the award NFANChairman Colin Evans said;

“Andrew has been a father figure tomany in the industry, offering hisexperience and advice, andinviting countless numbers of farmpark operators to visit his operationat Willows. He has been an activemember of the NFAN committeefor many years and his input will begreatly missed. He is stepping downas Chief Executive of Willows inSeptember and we wish him all thebest in his future plans.”

The Day Maker Award was anew category for 2017 and thewinner was Adam Price atCantref Adventure Farm in SouthWales. This customer serviceexcellence category was hotly-contested with seven finalists.Adam’s commitment to “goingthe extra mile” as standard,great sense of humour and‘can-do’ attitude won the day.

Gwen Evans nominated Adam forthe award and said: “Adam isalways up for the challenge andhas never backed away fromdelivering first class customerservice.

“One stand out is the way in whichhe led the Santa ExperienceDecember 2015. We had aseverely disabled child in amotorised wheel chair that waslarger than the usual. Although thegrotto was up to DDA standards,Adam quickly moved Santatogether with the majority of thecontents of the grotto into theElves Workshop. The parents of thelittle boy were overwhelmed -most definitely a "day maker"moment that the child andparents will remember for manyyears to come.”
