Brightspace Data Platform - End-of-life of the ODBC Driver | RemovedD2L announces the end-of-life of the Brightspace Data Platform Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver. The ODBC driver allowed clients to create and run their own queries to access Brightspace event data in the Brightspace Data Platform. As of this release, the ODBC Driver is no longer available or supported.

Slight impact to users due to the removal of the legacy Help tool.

If you previously had the legacy Help tool link on your navbar, it automatically changed to the new Brightspace Help link in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.6.9. If you had created your own links to the legacy Help, those links will no longer work.

The new Brightspace Help is a full website, external to Brightspace Learning Environment. It contains Continuous Delivery help resources for the suite of Brightspace products, microservices in the Brightspace Cloud, integrations, and Semester Start "frequently asked questions."

If you had your own links to the legacy Help, D2L recommends creating links to the new Brightspace Help site (https://documentation.brightspace.com).

You can also embed and customize help packages directly in your instance of Brightspace Learning Environment. Copy Course Components - Copying final grade properties includes calculated and adjusted grades | UpdatedWhen you copy final grade items, the copy process includes properties from the calculated and adjusted final grade items. In the Copy Course Components tool, when you select Copy All to select everything in the course, all final grade properties are now copied. If you copy individual components, Final Calculated Grade and Final Adjusted Grade appear in the list of components to select.

Daylight Experience - Improved learner workflows and responsive dialog boxes | UpdatedSome important learner workflows have been improved in the Daylight Experience. The following components of the Insert Stuff dialog are now responsive: My Computer, Insert Link, and Enter Embed Code. The Add a File dialog (used in Assignments) is also responsive. This makes the core learner workflows of adding and submitting files easier on tablets or mobile devices.

The Brightspace Daylight Experience features are now optimized for production environments when using the Google Chrome or Apple Safari browsers. The core tools and workflows in Brightspace Learning Environment have been tested extensively on these two browsers. In the coming months, D2L will continue to make updates across the product suite that reflect Daylight design and will continue to optimize the Daylight Experience in other browser environments. Turning on Daylight does not modify your content or other settings in Brightspace. All workflows and features in the Brightspace Daylight experience are available on all supported browsers; however, D2L is continuing to optimize performance and improve page load times on browsers other than Chrome and Safari. If you turn on the Brightspace Daylight Experience to do some testing, you can turn off the configuration variable to restore your site to the original look and feel.

Slight impact to administrators due to a required configuration variable to make this feature available.

The configuration variable d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGroupFilteredTopics must be turned on for these features to be available. As of Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.1, this variable is on by default.

In the Config Variable Browser, ensure that the Organization Value for d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGroupFilteredTopics is set to on, or no Organization Value is set.

Slight impact to instructors due to a change in workflow when posting to group discussion topics.

When posting to a group discussion topic, instructors have the option to post their thread to an individual group or all groups.

From a group discussion topic, click Start a New Thread and use the Post Thread to dropdown list to select an individual group or All Groups before posting.

Discussions - Default value for Discussions configuration variable | UpdatedThe default value of the configuration variable d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGroupFilteredTopics is changing from off to on. This variable controls whether discussion topics can contain group specific posts. Clients who do not want this feature available can edit the Org Value of the variable and set it to off. Changes to the configuration variable's default status do not affect Org Values that are already in place. If no Org Value is set, the default behavior for your organization changes after the 10.7.1 update is complete.

Slight impact to administrators due to the change in the default status of the configuration variable d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGroupFilteredTopics.

The d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGroupFilteredTopics variable determines if improvements to group discussions are available to instructors and learners. This variable changes the default value when creating group discussions to Create one topic with threads separated by group. This type of topic simplifies instructor workflows when navigating between group discussions, assessing discussion topics, and copying groups between courses.

For more information on improvements to group discussions see the Brightspace Platform 10.6.9 Release Notes https://community.brightspace.com/resources/documentation/release_notes/files/january_2017_release_notes/brightspace_platform_1069_release_notes.

If you want the improvements available to your users, ensure that the d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGroupFilteredTopics configuration variable does not have its Org Value set to off.

HTML Editor - Improved paste functionality in Quizzes | UpdatedThe HTML Editor tool has improved paste functionality for the new quiz question authoring experience in the Quizzes tool. Administrators and instructors can copy content from external sources such as Microsoft Word and various HTML sources, and paste it as question or answer content in a quiz question, while retaining the formatting and images from the source location.

IPSIS - Reactivate users | NewIPSIS administrators can now reactivate users that have been deactivated, that is, they can change an inactive user’s status back to active. Previously, a user’s status could only be set upon creation.

Additionally, the Standard SIS integration now considers the user’s status from the CSV file that administrators must generate. Previously, the user status column wasn't captured.

Slight impact to IPSIS administrators who now have the ability to change a user's status after it has been set at creation.

Now, when a deletePerson request deactivates a user, IPSIS provides the ability to change the user’s status back to active using a replacePerson request.

To interpret the user’s status information from the CSV file, a new translator was created: D2L.IM.IPSIS.LIS.RequestAdapters.PMS.Default.PersonRequestIsActiveTranslator. The translator is released as inactive and must be configured to become active.

To reactivate a user:

1. Since the user status does not match directly with a field from the LIS specification, you must implement an extension field on the replacePerson request to make use of this feature. See the IPSIS – Administrator Guide, when it is released, for more information on how to implement the extension field.

2. From the Admin Tools menu, select IPSIS Administration, and click the Configuration tab.

3. Within the LIS area, under Person Management, click Person - Replace.

4. In the Available Plug-ins area, select the D2L.IM.IPSIS.LIS.RequestAdapters.PMS.Default.PersonRequestIsActiveTranslator check box.

5. Click Add to Configuration. and ensure the sort order of the Active Plug-ins is correct (see the IPSIS - Administrator Guide for more information).

6. Click Save and Close.

IPSIS - Support for departments with upper org units | NewSome organizations want to have an org unit above the department level for purposes such as advanced reporting, custom login logic, or competency structures. For organizations that have a custom org unit above the department level, but below the top organization level, IPSIS now recognizes that org unit even if it was not created through IPSIS. Previously, IPSIS didn't recognize custom org units manually created between the organization level and the department level.

Slight impact to IPSIS administrators due to the ability for custom org units above the department level to be recognized.

Now, when the ReplaceDepartmentRequest call is processed, it does not remove custom org units above the department level, but recognizes them and leaves them intact.

A new handler has been added that preserves org structure above the department level: D2L.IM.IPSIS.Default.OrgUnits.Departments.Handlers.ReplaceDepartmentParentsNoUpdateLMSHandler. The handler is released as inactive and must be configured to become active.

To preserve org structure above the department level:

1. From the Admin Tools menu, select IPSIS Administration, and click the Configuration tab.

2. Within the IPSIS Platform area, under Org Unit, click Departments - Replace.

3. In the Available Plug-ins area, select the D2L.IM.IPSIS.Default.OrgUnits.Departments.Handlers.ReplaceDepartmentParentsNoUpdateLMSHandler check box.

4. Click Add to Configuration. and ensure the sort order of the Active Plug-ins is correct (see the IPSIS - Administrator Guide, when it is released, for more information).

5. Click Save and Close.

Using the Attach Web Links picker, you can enter a web URL and title that is styled and formatted as a clickable attachment to the post. Using the Attach Google Drive File picker, you can select a file that is styled and formatted as a clickable attachment to the post. These links are included below the post rather than as a part of the inline text. After an external weblink or Google Drive file is attached, an icon appears indicating the type of attachment on the post.

Google Drive attachments must originate from the instructor's personal Google Account. Before attaching the link, the instructor must ensure that the file has proper visibility permissions in Google Drive.

2. Click anywhere in the Create a post text box and type a message.

HTML5 is the now the recommended Virtual Classrooms client when using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. HTML5 is not yet available in other browsers due to missing technical dependencies.

Assignments

PRB0053509Previously, in Brightspace Learning Environment, while using a Chrome browser, when you entered your email address in the Notification Email field, and if that email address was saved in your Chrome auto-fill settings, you might have observed that the quiz and assignment name and other fields were populated with auto-fill information.

Now, in Brightspace Learning Environment, while using a Chrome browser, when you enter your email address in the Notification Email field, and if that email address is saved in your Chrome auto-fill settings, the quiz and assignment name and other fields are not populated with auto-fill information, as expected.

Awards

PRB0053409Previously, when you revoked an award from a user and you had another award with an associated release condition that specified a user needs to earn the revoked award, the new award was automatically issued to the user.

Now, when you revoke an award from a user and you have another award with an associated release condition that specifies a user needs to earn the revoked award, the new award is not automatically issued to the user.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.6.3.

PRB0053310Previously, when you were editing an award and you tried to create a release condition, you might have observed that a dialog box appeared but did not load successfully.

Now, when you are editing an award and you try to create a release condition, a dialog box appears and loads successfully.

To reproduce this fix:

1. In Brightspace Learning Environment, go to the Awards tool.

2. Navigate to Course Awards.

3. Select an award (or create a new one) and click Edit Properties.

Brightspace Data Sets

PRB0054810Previously, the User Logins data set returned a much smaller volume of data as specified in the BatchLimit setting (default of 100,000 rows), rather than the RowLimit setting (default of 150,000,000 rows). This might have resulted in retrieving data worth a few days for clients with large volumes of user login data, rather than retrieving data for two years, as expected. This defect might have had no impact on clients with smaller volumes of data.

Now, the User Logins data set returns the expected volume of data as specified in the RowLimit setting.

This issue was fixed as part of a later Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.1 bundle.

Brightspace ePortfolio and Brightspace ePortfolio Mobile

PRB0054433Previously, in Brightspace ePortfolio, when you attempted to open a file from the Dashboard or from My Items, and if the file name contained special characters, you might have encountered an error.

Now, in Brightspace ePortfolio, when you attempt to open a file from the Dashboard or from My Items, and if the file name contains special characters, the file opens, as expected.

Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.0.

Brightspace Learning Environment

PRB0054482 (Daylight)Previously, in Brightspace Learning Environment with Daylight turned on, when you applied the open dyslexic font type, the system font did not change.

Now, in Brightspace Learning Environment with Daylight turned on, when you apply the open dyslexic font type, the system font changes, as expected.

PRB0054611Previously, OAuth 2.0 client integrations may not have worked due to new dedicated security requirements.

Now, wildcard permissions for specific scopes are allowed, and as a result, OAuth 2.0 client integrations work as expected.

This issue was fixed as part of a later Brightspace platform 10.7.0 bundle.

Content

PRB0052429Previously, in Content, while using Internet Explorer, if your HTML page contained the <style type="text/css"> tag, you might have observed that the HTML Editor tool did not load completely.

External Learning Tools

Now, some courses imported directly from Blackboard version 9.1 generate quizzes without submission views configured and when learners access these quizzes, default submission views are generated, as needed.

To reproduce this fix:

1. In Brightspace Learning Environment, import a Blackboard 9.1 export package containing quizzes to a course.

2. Once the import is complete, edit a quiz that was created by the Blackboard package.

1. Access Brightspace Learning Environment and ensure that Daylight is turned off.

2. Within either a quiz or Question Library, create a multi-select question.

This ability was previously enabled in Brightspace Learning Environment version 10.6.7 for the following tools: Content, Discussions, Announcements, and Email. Image pasting was not supported in legacy quiz question creation pages.

Now, in the new quiz question creation experience, you can paste images from Microsoft Word (or other sources like Google Docs) directly into the HTML Editor tool. Image pasting is not and will not be supported in legacy quiz question creation pages.

2. In the Restrictions tab, from the Status drop-down, select Active.

3. In the Assessment tab, select the Allow attempt to be set as graded immediately upon completion check box.

4. Return to the Properties tab and click Add/Edit Questions.

5. From the New button, select Short Answer Question (SA) and enter question text, for example, "There is an equinox in the months of ______ and ______."

6. Enter the first answer in Answers for Blank 1, for example, March.

7. Click Add Blank and enter the second answer in Answers for Blank 2, that is, September.

12. Click the link for the attempt you just made as the learner.

13. Observe that on the Grade Attempt page, in the Quiz Results area, the correct answers are denoted as correct.

PRB0054010Previously, when you attempted to delete sections within a quiz, you might have encountered a timeout error.

Now, you can successfully delete sections within a quiz, without error.

Widgets

PRB0054468Since the My Courses widget did not recognize user enrollment in departments or semesters if it was not done explicitly (it was usually implicit, that is, users were enrolled into courses that were part of departments/semesters), the filter options on the All Courses page might have not displayed when they were expected to.

Improvements have been made to the filter options for the My Courses widget and the filter now shows semesters and departments to filter by based on implicit enrollment in a department or semester that is a parent of a course rather than only explicit department and semester enrollments.

User Management

PRB0042995Previously, when you used the API call PUT /d2l/api/lp/1.3/users/(userid) to update user information, you might have encountered an error message if you had specified an incorrect case for any character in an existing username.

Now, when you use the API call PUT /d2l/api/lp/1.3/users/(userid) to update user information, this API no longer treats the Username field as case-sensitive.

PRB0054718Using iOS on mobile devices (iPad or iPhone) with Apple VoiceOver turned on, you cannot change the edit permissions for a Google Drive document directly in the app using swipe motions.

Announcements

PRB0049901When a user has the Add/Edit/Delete Global Announcements permission but not the Add/Edit/Delete Announcements permission, they cannot edit and delete items from all the places they should. For example, on the Announcements page, selecting Edit from the context menu of the item you want to edit gives an error, but clicking on the link itself opens the Edit page correctly.

To reproduce this issue:

1. Create a user who has a role with minimal permissions, for example, Student.

2. From the Admin Tools menu, select Roles and Permissions.

3. Click the role of the user that you created.

4. From the Filter by Tool drop-down list, select Announcements.

5. Add the See Announcements and the Add/Edit/Delete Global Announcements permissions for the Organization, the Course Template and the Course Offering.

6. Log in as or impersonate the user you created.

7. From the Admin Tools widget, select Global Announcements.

8. Create a new global item.

9. Click Publish.

10. From the context menu of the global item you just created, select Edit.

11. Observe the error message that displays.

12. Browse to My Home.

13. From the context menu of the Announcements widget, notice that the Edit/Delete Global Announcements Item option is missing.

Assignments

PRB0054710 (Daylight)In instances of Brightspace Learning Environment that have the Daylight experience enabled, in the Assignments tool, the delete icon for individual file submissions is not in the Submissions view. This means that you cannot delete individual submissions for a user, but can only delete all submissions at once.

6. Observe that you cannot delete an individual submission for the user, and the only option is to delete all of them at once.

Brightspace platform

PRB0054349 (Daylight)With the Daylight experience enabled, in the Roles and Permissions table, the icons you use to horizontally scroll might not always display, or might align incorrectly in the center of the table.

PRB0047355A learner without the Audit Users permission can select actions related to auditing another learner.

To reproduce this issue:

1. Ensure that the d2l.Tools.UserManagement.OrgHasAuditors configuration variable is turned on.

2. Create two learners and enroll them into a course.

3. From Roles and Permissions, view the learner role and ensure that:

User Auditors > Audit Users is turned off for all organization unit types.

Class Progress > See User Progress is turned on for the organization and course offering levels.

Class Progress > See User Progress for All Users is turned off for all organization unit types.

4. Navigate to the course offering you enrolled the learners in and view the classlist.

5. From the context menu of the first learner, select Manage Auditors, and then click Users <learner1> audits.

6. Hover your mouse over the yellow icon and notice that it states that this user does not have permission to audit users, which is correct.

7. Add the second learner as a user to audit.

Calendar

PRB0053262In some cases, if you use the Internet Explorer browser, the Week view in the Calendar tool displays events pushed to the left of each day or time slot so that you cannot read them. This affects events that have an End Date, such as discussion items, submission folders, and quizzes.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.5.5.

To reproduce this issue:

1. Using Internet Explorer, access a course in Brightspace Learning Environment.

2. Go to the Calendar tool and select the Week view.

3. Go to Content, and in a module, from the Upload/Create button, select New Discussion.

4. Enter a title, select a forum, and click Publish.

5. In the Activity Details tab, click Add Dates and Restrictions.

6. Add an End Date that falls on the next available Saturday.

7. Click Update.

8. Return to Calendar.

9. Observe that the calendar doesn't load correctly, the columns might be misaligned, and your event that ends on a Saturday is pushed to the left of the timeslot it should be in.

Checklist

PRB0054064If you create a checklist item from Content, and then if you delete the checklist item from within the Checklist tool, an error occurs. This is because the Display in Calendar check box is automatically enabled for the checklist item, even if you didn't add a due date to the item, because the associated calendar event doesn't actually exist.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.5.5.

To reproduce this issue:

1. In an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment, access a course.

2. Go to Content, and from the Upload/Create button, select New Checklist.

3. Enter a title and instructions, and click Publish.

4. On the checklist page, click Add a New List.

5. Enter a list title and click Add a New Task to <checklist title>.

6. Navigate to Course Admin > Checklists.

7. From the More Actions button, select Delete.

8. Select the check box corresponding to the checklist you created, and then click Delete Selected.

9. Observe the internal error message that displays.

10. Return to the checklist you created.

11. Click the link for the checklist item.

12. On the checklist item editing page, notice that the Display in Calendar check box is selected by default, even though a due date hasn't been added.

Content

PRB0054403Using the Internet Explorer browser, if you select a new quicklink destination for an image in an HTML content topic, the original link destination is not removed from the HTML code as it is in other browsers.

1. As an instructor, on the navbar, select Content.

2. From the Upload/Create button, select Create a File, and enter a title.

3. Click the Insert Image icon and upload an image file.

6. In the HTML editor, click the image to select it, and then click the Insert Quicklink icon.

7. In the Insert Quicklink dialog box, select a tool, Assignments, for example, and select an assignment submission folder.

8. Click Publish.

9. Click the image and you are taken to the submission folder you selected.

10. From the context menu of the content topic title, select Edit HTML.

11. Click the image to select it, and click the Insert Quicklink icon.

12. Select a different tool, Discussions, for example, select a discussion forum, and then select a discussion topic.

13. Click Update.

14. Click the image and it takes you to the discussion topic you selected.

15. From the context menu of the content topic title, select Edit HTML.

16. Click the source code icon.

17. In the HTML Source Editor, observe that the HTML code for the first quicklink displays below the image in a separate tag, and the second quicklink HTML code displays above the image.

PRB0053725 (Daylight)If you add a PDF file to Content that is dynamically linked from Brightspace Learning Repository, and then you access that PDF on an iPad, you cannot scroll beyond the first page.

5. From the Upload/Create button, select Add Object from LOR.

6. Find the PDF file you published and click Next.

7. Select the Dynamic Link to Newest Version radio button and click Next.

8. Click Create Topic.

To reproduce this issue:

1. As an administrator in a course (C1) in Brightspace Learning Environment, create a discussion forum, topic, and a content topic that links to your discussion topic.

2. Impersonate a learner in the course and post to the discussion topic.

3. Return to the content topic page and refresh it. Notice a checkmark displays beside the topic indicating that you've completed it.

4. Stop impersonating the learner.

5. Copy C1 to another course (C2).

6. Copy C2's content back to C1.

7. In C1, access Content and click the link for the content topic you created.

8. Click the Completion Summary tab.

9. Observe that the learner you impersonated does not appear to have posted to the discussion topic, and therefore hasn't completed the content item.

PRB0054068If you fix a broken link in Content and then re-associate the broken link to an existing discussion item, quiz, or other linked item, learners who have already completed that item do not see the checkmark indicating that it's complete.

5. In Discussions, delete the topic you just created.

6. Return to Content and click the link to the discussion topic to establish that it's a broken link. Notice that an internal error message displays.

7. Navigate to the Table of Contents view in Content and notice that the topic linked to the discussion topic displays 'Broken Topic'.

Discussions

PRB0054596If you use grid view in Discussions, the following unexpected behavior might occur when working with Draft posts:

1. After you post a previously saved draft, the page reloads and the post is no longer open in the reading pane. However, the draft was posted successfully, and is visible in the grid.

As a workaround, manually select the post you made to view it in the reading pane.

2. If you open a saved draft, edit it, and then post it, the draft post is posted to the topic successfully; however, a copy of the draft post remains in the draft folder.

As a workaround, manually delete the draft from the draft folder.

1. Log in to an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has both Grid View and Save Drafts enabled for the Discussions tool.

PRB0054097If you create a grade item with Brightspace developer platform using a Text description instead of an HTML description, and then you save the grade item within Brightspace Learning Environment, you see HTML tags because the HTML editor automatically inserts them. This is because the API call can set the grade description as Text, but the HTML editor always inserts the description as HTML.

PRB0054136If a course has sections and then you disable the Course Offering Info > Course Has Sections option, the sections turn into groups. Additionally, if you enable the Course Has Sections options again in that course, the sections still display as groups.

1. Access or create a course in Brightspace Learning Environment.

2. On the navbar, click Course Admin.

3. Click Course Offering Information.

4. Select the Course has sections check box.

5. Specify a department and a semester.

8. Click Create Sections, and create sections of any kind and number.

9. Click Create.

10. Navigate to Course Admin > Course Offering Information.

11. Deselect the Course has sections check box, and click Save.

12. Go to the Groups tool.

13. Expand the View Categories drop-down list and observe that there is a section category that includes the section(s) you created.

HTML Editor

2. In a course, enroll eight users with a role that can be auto-enrolled into groups.

3. In Groups, create a group category with Enrollment Type > # of Groups.

4. In the Number of Groups field, enter 4.

5. Under Advanced Properties, select Auto-enroll new users.

6. Click Save.

7. Create a second category with Enrollment Type > Groups of #.

8. In the Number of Users field, enter 2.

9. Under Advanced Properties, select Auto-enroll new users.

10. Click Save.

11. On the Manage Groups page, notice that each group category has four groups of two people.

12. Create a second course and enroll the same eight users.

13. Go to Import/Export/Copy Components and select Copy Components from another Org Unit.

14. Click Search for offering and find the first course you created.

15. Click Add Selected and then click Select Components.

16. Select the Groups check box and click Continue.

17. Click Finish and wait for the copy to complete.

18. Access the course with the copied components and go to Groups.

19. Observe that the group with the "Groups of #" enrollment type has users in each group, but the group with the "# of Groups" enrollment type does not.

Integrations

PRB0053969If a user has a role that has the Access All Course Sections permission but does not have the Access All Course Groups permission, and you try to unenroll that user from a section using the IPSIS integration, the user is only unenrolled from the section, and not the course offering above the section.

As a workaround, grant the user's role the Access All Course Groups permission before you submit the unenroll request.

1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment and ensure that the new quiz question editing experience is enabled.

2. In a course, create a quiz.

3. Add a multiple choice question.

4. In the question editing view, paste a large image from Microsoft Word or drag and drop a large image file from your computer into one of the question or answer text HTML editors.

5. Click Save, and if the dialog displays saying the image is not done uploading, observe that the image doesn't show any indication that its upload is not done complete.

PRB0054627When you paste from Microsoft Word into an HTML editor within the new quiz question editing experience, a dialog box displays asking you to choose whether to keep or remove the associated formatting. 6. Click Insert, and after a couple seconds, notice the equation displays in the Question Text field with the top line colored red.

7. Enter some text in the answer fields and select one correct answer.

9. Open the question again in editing mode, and observe that the colors of the quadratic equation are different than when you saved.

PRB0052619Previously, in the My Courses widget, when you did an advanced search and you set filters for semester and department that resulted in there only being one search result, you were automatically redirected to that result. The search also saved those filters so that if you navigated to the search tool in the future, you were automatically redirected to that single search result again, which made the search ineffective for any other criteria.

As a workaround, return to the organization level and access the advanced search option.

To reproduce this issue:

1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has the My Courses widget, and as a user that is enrolled in a semester and a department.

2. Click View All Courses.

3. On the All Courses page, click Advanced Search.

4. Set search filters for Department and Semester that cause there to be only one search result.

5. With those filters set, click the link for the single course offering.

6. Once in the course offering, access the advanced search again and notice that you are redirected back to the course homepage.

7. Repeat step 6 several times.

8. Observe that you are continuously redirected back to the same course homepage.
