Activity Feed - Limited release to US and Canada | NewActivity Feed is a new course homepage widget for Brightspace Learning Environment available to clients in the US and Canada. Activity Feed provides a central location for instructors to post messages and links to course materials. It gives learners the ability to quickly access links to important materials, and comment on messages made by instructors and classmates.

This features implements PIE item D2983.

Slight impact to administrators due to a configuration variable that needs to be enabled, and having to map IMS roles to Brightspace Learning Environment roles.

Before this widget can be used, the configuration variable d2l.Tools.ActivityFeed.ShowWidget must be enabled. Features of the tool can be turned on for specific courses by adding override values in the Config Variable Browser. Administrators must access Admin Tools > IMS Configuration to map IMS roles to Brightspace Learning Environment roles.

The configuration variable to enable Activity Feed will be available at the end of April, after all continuous delivery wave deployments are complete. It will not be visible when Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.0 is first released.

Activity Feed is a service located in the following Amazon Web Services™ (AWS) locations:

U.S. East (N. Virginia)

Canada Central (Montreal)

Client regions are determined by D2L and routed accordingly.

This feature is dependent on the Authentication Service, and Landlord Service.

1. In the Config Variable Browser, set the d2l.Tools.ActivityFeed.ShowWidget configuration variable to on.

2. From the Admin Tools menu, select IMS Configuration and map IMS roles to Brightspace Learning Environment roles. Brightspace Learning Environment roles for student, parent, and instructor must be mapped to the IMS roles for student, mentor, and instructor.

3. Add the Activity Feed widget to the default course homepage, or notify instructors that the widget is available for them to add to custom homepages.

Please make sure that you have the appropriate permissions to enable these features by checking your organization’s policies regarding data residency, and by consulting with your legal advisors.

Brightspace Daylight - Optional course image banner on widget-based homepages | NewInstructors can now add a course image banner below the navigation bar on widget-based course homepages. The banner provides a venue to personalize the look and feel of course homepages and provide a connection between the course tile in the My Courses widget and the course homepage.

Administrators control the prominence of this feature in the Brightspace Daylight Experience. By default, the d2l.Tools.Homepages.Banner.EnabledByDefault configuration variable is turned off, indicating that instructors can opt in to using the banner image. If the configuration variable is turned on, and the form element Use Course Image is set to Is Displayed instructors can remove the banner using an option on the Course Offering Information page.

If the d2l.Tools.Homepages.Banner.EnabledByDefault configuration variable is turned on, instructors are required to set a banner for their courses. In the Course Offering Information dialog box, instructors can select the course image.

The Brightspace Daylight Experience features are now optimized for production environments when using the Google Chrome or Apple Safari browsers. The core tools and workflows in Brightspace Learning Environment have been tested extensively on these two browsers. In the coming months, D2L will continue to make updates across the product suite that reflect Daylight design and will continue to optimize the Daylight Experience in other browser environments. Turning on Daylight does not modify your content or other settings in Brightspace. All workflows and features in the Brightspace Daylight experience are available on all supported browsers; however, D2L is continuing to optimize performance and improve page load times on browsers other than Chrome and Safari. If you turn on the Brightspace Daylight Experience to do some testing, you can turn off the configuration setting to restore your site to the original look and feel.

Configuration Variable Look and Feel

On-Premise


Slight impact to administrators who can set the content image banner to optional or required.

The Brightspace Daylight Experience feature is now available to clients who turn on the d2l.system.BrightspaceDaylightExperience configuration variable.

Administrators can set the d2l.Tools.Homepages.Banner.EnabledByDefault configuration variable to require instructors to use a course image banner. By default, this variable is turned off.

Note that the maximum display size for the course image banner is 1230 by 200 pixels. Larger images and images with different aspect ratios are automatically resized appropriately.

You must have the Brightspace Daylight Experience configuration variable turned on before you can use this feature.

Administrators should consider turning on the image banner by default if instructors have requested increased personalization options in the Brightspace Daylight Experience.




Slight impact to instructors due to the ability to add a course image banner to their course homepage or review the banner if it is turned on by default.

If the d2l.Tools.Homepages.Banner.EnabledByDefault configuration variable remains turned off, instructors can select the Display the image in a banner on the course homepage checkbox on the Course Offering Information page.

If the d2l.Tools.Homepages.Banner.EnabledByDefault configuration variable is turned on, users can click the More Options menu on the course banner remove the course banner.

Note that the maximum display size for the course image banner is 1230 by 200 pixels. Larger images and images with different aspect ratios are automatically resized appropriately.

Instructors need the See Course Info and Change Course Image permissions to add, remove, or edit the course image banner.

Data Hub - Brightspace Data Sets | NewTo provide administrators with access to more comprehensive data, this release introduces a new type of data set to the Data Hub tool: Brightspace Data Sets. This new data set type consists of raw, user-level data from Brightspace Learning Environment, which grants administrators the flexibility to filter, aggregate, and transform the data according to their needs.

Specific benefits of Brightspace Data Sets include:

Gain access to raw, user-level dataUse the Data Hub UI or API to gain access to Brightspace Data Sets in CSV format.

Easily combine data setsBrightspace Data Sets are designed to work with each other. Import your data sets into a database to combine the data sets you need to create more complex data sets or reports.

Create custom aggregations and filtersImport your data sets into a database to filter and aggregate on the fields that answer your questions. You can always review the user-level data to fine-tune your results.

Brightspace Data Sets are compatible with Brightspace 10.7+, and are available to existing Brightspace Insights clients and new Brightspace Core clients.

Brightspace Data Sets are CSV extracts of data from Brightspace Learning Environment, available in the following regions:

APAC

With Brightspace Data Sets, administrators download the complete historical data for the data extracts. However, there are the following exceptions:

There is a default system limit to return 150 million rows of the most recent data.

There are a few data sets where the data is limited to the last two calendar years (noted in the descriptions of the data sets).

Brightspace Data Sets are refreshed daily. During the enablement process, D2L sets up a scheduled task to generate the data sets, which refreshes the data.

Significant impact to administrators due to new role permissions and configuration variables.

The ability to run Brightspace Data Sets is controlled by data set-specific permissions.

From Admin Tools > Roles and Permissions > Brightspace Data Sets, grant the permissions that correspond to the data set you want the user to be able to run. For example, to run the User Enrollments data set, grant the Can execute User Enrollments permission at the org level.

Brightspace Data Sets use the following configuration variables for performance tuning, visible only to D2L:

d2l.Tools.BrightspaceDataSets.BatchSize (Org) - Batch size to use for the Brightspace Data Sets queries. The default is 100,000.

d2l.Tools.BrightspaceDataSets.RowLimit (Org) - Maximum number of rows that any Brightspace Data Set outputs to a file. The default is 150,000,000.

d2l.Tools.BrightspaceDataSets.TruncateLimit (Org) - Limit of how many characters are exported for fields with no maximum length from the Brightspace Data Sets. The default is 1,000.

1. Ensure that the Data Hub tool is enabled.

2. From the Admin Tools menu, select Roles and Permissions, and grant the following Brightspace Data Sets permissions at the org level:

Can Execute <data set name>. For example, to run the User Enrollments data set, grant the Can Execute User Enrollments permission.

Document Conversion Service | NewTo improve the document viewing experience for users, this release introduces the Document Conversion Service. When documents are uploaded to the Content tool, Assignments tool, Brightspace Learning Repository, or Brightspace ePortfolio, the documents are converted to PDFs, which display inline in the tool or product. Previously, the DocumentBuilderService rendered documents as images at different zoom levels.

Moderate system requirement impact for administrators because of potential data residency issues.

The Document Conversion Service is automatically enabled for all new and existing clients hosted in Amazon Web Services™ (AWS) data centers, and is only available to these clients.

The Document Conversion Service is located in all AWS locations currently used by D2L.

A call from the Brightspace platform is routed to the appropriate region based on its geographic location using the Amazon Route 53 DNS web service. Currently, Canadian servers are routed to Canada Central, Australian servers to Asia-Pacific, and all others default to U.S. East.

The Document Conversion Service depends on the Authentication Service, located in AWS U.S. East (N. Virginia).

D2L recommends checking your organization’s policies regarding data residency, and consulting with your legal advisors.

For detailed information regarding data residency, privacy, and transmission, refer to the updated Microservices in the Brightspace Cloud guide when it is released.

Slight impact to instructors and learners due to the valid file types that can be uploaded.

Documents are converted during upload instead of during user access, which reduces wait times when serving documents to users.

Valid file types include: .ppt, .pps, .pptx, .ppsx, .doc, .docx, .rtf, .odt, .odp, .xls, .xlsx.

Converted documents display as inline PDFs in the tool or product. If an uploaded document is an invalid file type, it fails to convert and render in the tool or product.

When users download documents, they are saved in their native file formats.

HTML Editor - New Question Authoring experience | UpdatedThe HTML Editor tool now makes use of the updated Math Editor when instructors create quiz questions using the New Question Authoring experience. As a result, instructors can preview equations inline when creating quiz questions.

HTML Editor - Accessibility Checker | NewAn accessibility checker is now available within the HTML Editor for use within Content, Widgets, Quizzes, Assignments, Calendar, and any other tools where an instructor or student can access the HTML Editor.



The accessibility checker is available on the HTML Editor bar. After you add content to the HTML Editor, you can click the checker to ensure that the HTML page conforms to WCAG and Section 508 accessibility standards.

Note that the accessibility checker does not check multiple files at the same time, and does not check files that you have imported into a course. Also be aware that the accessibility checker is only available for HTML files in the HTML Editor; it does not check any other type of file, such as MS Word, PDF, PowerPoint, and so on.

IPSIS - Improved Logging | UpdatedTo help administrators troubleshoot errors more efficiently, IPSIS log messages have been improved to include the context in which the error occurred. Log messages are also now titled in a consistent manner so they are grouped in the error view. Additionally, when metadata is available in the log message, users can search and display the metadata in more detail.

Integration Look and Feel


Slight impact to administrators due to additional error information included in log messages.

When metadata is included in log messages, it displays in a Metadata section. It consists of all data points gathered from the original request, which might not display in the error message itself.

To view IPSIS log messages:

1. From the Admin Tools menu, select IPSIS Administration.

2. Select one of the log messages to see the error information.

Fixed IssuesTo keep you informed about the improvements D2L has made to Brightspace Learning Environment, the Fixed Issues List consists of issues that have been fixed in the current release, unless otherwise noted.

Assignments

PRB0040463Previously, if an announcement had a quicklink to an assignment that was controlled by release conditions, learners who had met the conditions were unable to access the assignment for the first time directly from the link in the announcement.

Now, if an announcement has a quicklink to an assignment that is controlled by release conditions, learners who have met the conditions can successfully access the assignment for the first time directly from the link in the announcement.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.3.0.

PRB0054191Previously, if you were using an iPad and you tried to submit a file to an assignment submission folder on an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that had Daylight enabled, the Upload button did not work.

Now, if you are using an iPad and you try to submit a file to an assignment submission folder on an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has Daylight enabled, the Upload button works, as expected.


To reproduce this fix:

1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has Daylight enabled.

2. Go to a course that has learners enrolled and create an assignment submission folder.

3. Using an iPad, as a learner, access the course where you created the assignment submission folder.

4. Go to the assignment submission folder.

5. Click Add a File.

6. In the Add a File dialog window, click Upload.

7. Observe that the Upload button works, as expected.

PRB0053608Previously, while using any browser other than Chrome, when you attempted to access a quiz through Content, you might have observed that the Submit Quiz button was missing.

Now, while using any browser, when you attempt to access a quiz through Content, the Submit Quiz button is visible, as expected.

PRB0053486Previously, in Brightspace Learning Environment, with the preferred locale and language set to French, when you viewed an award with multiple release conditions in the Evidence (Preuve) section, you might have observed that the release conditions were delimited by the word and.

Now, in Brightspace Learning Environment, with the preferred locale and language set to French, when you view an award with multiple release conditions in the Evidence (Preuve) section, the release conditions are delimited by the word et, as expected.


Brightspace Valence

PRB0052663Previously, when you ran the MyUpdates API, it returned values for learners unenrolled from a course or section. As a result, instructors believed that they had unread/unfinished work.

Now, when you run the MyUpdates API, it does not return values for learners unenrolled from a course or section.

Fixed in Brightspace platform 10.6.6.


1. In Brightspace Learning Environment version 10.6.6, enroll a learner in a course offering or section.

2. Create an assignment submission folder.

3. Log in as or impersonate a learner, and submit an assignment to this assignment submission folder.

4. Run the MyUpdates API to see what is returned from the organization unit (/d2l/api/le/unstable/<orgunitid>/updates/myupdates).

5. In Assignments, observe the accurate number of unread files.

6. In Brightspace Learning Environment, unenroll the user from the course offering or section.

7. In Assignments, observe that the number of unread files is less after unenrollment.

8. Run the MyUpdates API again to see what is returned from the organization unit.

9. Observe that the value is the same as after the unenrollment.



Classlist

PRB0054086Previously, when you attempted to view grade information for learners who had been withdrawn from a course, an error occurred.

PRB0054366If users apply custom font settings or the OpenDyslexic font to their Brightspace Learning Environment that override the default font settings, the Activity Feed widget does not respect the override settings and renders its default font and size.

As a workaround, users can increase or decrease the font size using their browser's settings to make it easier to read.


To reproduce this issue:

1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has the Activity Feed widget on a course's homepage.

2. In your Account Settings, under Font Settings, select the Use the OpenDyslexic font to improve readability check box.


4. Go to the course's homepage that has the Activity Feed widget and observe that the widget does not reflect the font override but still shows the default font and size.

PRB0040465If an instructor downloads a submitted file from Assignments, the time of the index.html file within the ZIP file is in UTC (GMT) time regardless of the user's regional time. This might cause instructors to grade the submission as late, even if the learner submitted it on time.



1. Log in to Brightspace Learning Environment as an instructor or administrator.

2. Access a course and enroll a learner.

3. Create an individual assignment submission folder and then click Save and Close.



4. Impersonate the learner and submit a file to the assignment submission folder.

5. End the impersonation.

6. Access the submission folder and on the Submissions page, select the file and click Download.

7. Save the downloaded ZIP file to your local computer and take note of the location.

8. Open the ZIP file and observe that the time on the index.html file is in UTC (GMT) time.

PRB0054075When a group assignment submission folder is added to Content, users can't see feedback files attached to their assignment submission when they view the submission folder in Content.



1. As an instructor in Brightspace Learning Environment, create a group assignment submission folder.

2. As a learner, add a few assignment submissions to the submission folder.

4. Add the group submission folder to Content.

PRB0053576If you add or edit a date for an assignment submission folder, such as a due date, start date, or end date, an associated calendar event might display in the Calendar tool multiple times.



1. As an administrator or instructor in Brightspace Learning Environment, go to the Assignments tool.

2. Click New Submission Folder and enter a name.

3. Click the Restrictions tab, and add a date (either a Start, End, or Due date).

4. Click Save.

5. In the Restrictions tab, repeat the following steps until a duplicate calendar event appears:

1. Modify one or more of the dates, that is, either change an existing date or select or deselect a date type, and click Save.



2. In a different browser tab, access the same instance of Brightspace Learning Environment and go to Calendar.

3. Refresh the page several times.

6. Observe that a duplicate calendar event displays for the same date setting for the same assignment submission folder.

Awards

PRB0054307When a user updates the expiry date of an award, the new date does not propagate to awards that were already issued to users. The message that displays suggests it may propagate to awards that have already been issued, but it does not for expiry dates.



1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has Awards enabled and the necessary permissions granted, for example, that learners can receive awards.

2. In a course, go to the Awards tool and click Course Awards.

3. Click Add Award To Course.

4. Click Create Award.

5. Enter a name and a description, and set the Award Type to Badge.

6. In the Availability section, ensure that the Make this award available to all of my courses radio button is selected.

7. Under Expiry, select Fixed Date, and then enter a date in the future.

8. Add an image for the award and click Save.

9. For the award you just created, click Edit Properties.

10. Create a simple release condition such as Classlist: Role in current org unit and Enrolled as: Student.

11. Ensure there is at least one learner (Student role) enrolled in the course.

12. Go to Classlist Awards and verify that the learner in the course received the award you created.

13. Click the badge icon for the learner and take note of the expiry date (the one you set previously).

14. Return to Course Awards and click Edit Award for the award you created.

15. Notice that the pop-up message reads, "Changes made will propagate to all instances of this award including those who have already earned this item."

16. Click Ok.

17. Edit the expiry date to be something different from the existing date.



18. Click Save and notice the warning message that includes a similar message about the change being propagated to all awards, including those that have already been issued.

19. Go to Classlist Awards.

20. Click the badge for the learner who was issued the award previously.

21. Observe that the expiry date remains as it was before you changed it.

Bulk Course Configuration

PRB0054254Bulk Course Export does not export discussion forums that don't contain any discussion topics.


Content

PRB0054061In a non-Daylight environment, when a content item is dynamically linked from Brightspace Learning Repository and you click to view it, the View content in new window button displays without a border.



1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has Brightspace Learning Repository set up.

2. Upload a file (PDF, DOC, or DOCX) and publish it to Brightspace Learning Repository.

3. In a course, go to the Content tool and dynamically link the file you added to the LOR to a content topic.

4. Click the content topic that the file resides in.

5. Observe that the View content in new window button displays without a border.

Discussions

PRB0054410In Discussions, with the Grid View and Unthreaded options selected, if group filtered topics are enabled and you delete a group or group category whose members had posted to a discussion topic with group restrictions, the group information continues to display and there is no indication that the group associated with the discussion thread was deleted.



As a workaround, view Discussions using the Threaded view.



1. Log in to Brightspace Learning Environment as an administrator and from the Admin Tools menu, select Config Variable Browser.

2. Search for d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGroupFilteredTopics and ensure that the variable is enabled.

3. In Roles and Permissions, ensure the administrator role has the See Grid View permission under the Discussions tool.

4. Access a course, create a group category, and from the Enrollment Type drop-down select # of Groups.

5. In the Number of Groups field, enter 1.

6. In the Additional Options area, select Set up discussion areas and save.

7. On the Create Restricted Discussion Areas page, click New Forum and create one.

8. Select the Create one topic with threads separated by group radio button.

9. Click Create and Next > Done > Save.

10. On the Manage Groups page, click the link for the group you created.

11. Click Enroll Users.

12. Enroll one or more users to the group and save.

13. Impersonate one of the learners you added to the group.

14. Go to Discussions and click the group discussion.

15. Start a new thread and post to it.

16. Stop impersonating the learner.

17. Go to Groups and delete the group or group category that you created.

18. Go to Discussions Settings and ensure that in the Personal Settings area, Grid View is selected, and in the Grid View Settings area, Unthreaded is selected.

19. Click Save.

20. Access the discussion topic you created and observe that there is no indication that the group assigned to the discussion thread was deleted.

PRB0053505When you create or update a discussion post, you can enter up to 400 characters for the title, but when you save the post, the title truncates to 250 characters without warning.

3. Save the post and then open it.

Document Viewer

PRB0044124If you are using an Apple Mac computer and you create a PAGES file that contains a long table, export it as a DOCX, and then upload it into the Content tool, some of the contents of the file might not render in the document viewer.

This issue is being included in the 10.7.0 Known Issues List (KIL) due to additional details being made available since it was first included in a KIL (10.5.3).

1. Using an Apple Mac computer, create a PAGES file that contains a table spanning three or more pages.

2. Export the file as a DOCX file.

3. In a course in Brightspace Learning Environment, upload the DOCX file into the Content tool.



4. Click the content item so the document viewer renders the document.

5. Observe that some of the table content does not properly display.

Brightspace ePortfolio and Brightspace ePortfolio Mobile

PRB0052425In Brightspace ePortfolio presentations, if the Banner Title is longer and spans multiple lines, there is no space between the lines when you view the presentation.

Found in Brightspace ePortfolio 10.4.12.


1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has Brightspace ePortfolio.

2. Go to ePortfolio, and in the Build your ePortfolio section, click New Presentation.

3. Name the presentation.

4. On the Banner tab, in the Banner Title field, enter a long title, for example, 10 or more words.

5. Click Save and then click View Presentation.

6. Observe that there is no space between the lines of the banner title.

PRB0047034In Brightspace ePortfolio, when an HTML file (web document) is contained in a presentation and you click the buttons in the HTML editor to edit the file, they do not respond.

As a workaround, modify these HTML files from the My Items view.

Found in Brightspace ePortfolio 10.3 SP4.


1. In an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has Brightspace ePortfolio, go to the My Items page.

2. From the Add button, select Web Document.

3. Give the artifact a name and then save and exit the creation mode.

4. On the ePortfolio page, create a new presentation.

5. Give it a name, and then click the Content/Layout tab.

6. Add a component to Content Area 1, and choose the document you created previously.

7. Close the presentation setup and go to the ePortfolio page.



8. Find and edit the presentation you created.

9. In the Content/Layout tab, edit the web document component you added.

10. In the Edit Artifact dialog box, click Edit File.

11. In the Edit File dialog box, click some of the buttons such as Insert Stuff, Insert Quicklink, and HTML Source Editor.

12. Observe that the buttons aren't responsive in this HTML editor.

PRB0046495If you customize the theme for a Brightspace ePortfolio presentation and then copy or export it, the properties that you customized revert to those of the theme template.



1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has Brightspace ePortfolio.

2. Create a new presentation and enter a name.

3. On the Theme tab, customize your theme by changing the banner title font to be 8 pt., for example.

4. Save the presentation and go to the ePortfolio page.

5. Copy the presentation you created and give it a distinctive name.

6. View the copy and observe that the font size for the banner is the original for the chosen theme.

PRB0046168In Brightspace ePortfolio, when you are in the process of sharing an item with other users and you search for one, the search results are not ordered with the highest number of matches first, as you might expect.

As a workaround, increase the search results list length to 100, for example, to check the results more quickly without having to click through as many pages. Furthermore, you can use your browser search to find a specific result.



1. As a user that has permission to create users and share with other users in Brightspace ePortfolio, such as an admin, access Brightspace Learning Environment.

2. Create several learners with names that are similar, for example, John Doe, Jane Doe, Doe John, John Test, Test Jane, and so on.

3. Go to Brightspace ePortfolio and create a presentation.

4. Enter a name for the presentation and save it.



5. On the My Items page, from the context menu of the presentation you created, select Share.

6. In the Sharing Settings dialog box, click Add Users and Groups.

7. Search for a learner by entering their first and last name, for example, John Doe.

8. Observe that the names with multiple matches (John Doe or Doe John) do not rank higher than those with only one name that matches (John Test or Jane Doe)

Grades

PRB0054342If instructors publish a grade to a group assignment submission from the submission list view page, they receive a grade item update notification if they are enrolled in the group, even though their role does not have the Can be graded in Grades setting enabled.

As a workaround, publish feedback for group assignment submissions from the Evaluate Submission page.



1. Access Brightspace Learning Environment as an administrator.

2. From the Admin Tools menu, select Roles and Permissions and from the Instructor role context menu, select Edit Settings.

3. Ensure that the Groups > Access all course groups setting is selected, and the Tool Behavior Options > Can be graded in Grades setting is not selected.

4. Access a course that has an instructor and at least one learner enrolled.

5. Impersonate the instructor and go to Notifications.

6. Enter your email address, select all the Grades notifications for email, and click Save.

7. Access the course and go to the Groups tool.

8. Click New Category, enter a name, and from the Enrollment Type drop-down list, select # of Groups - No Auto Enrollments.

9. In the Number of Groups field, enter 1.

10. In the Create Workspace area, select Set up assignment submission folders, and click Save.

11. On the Create Assignment Submission Folders page, enter a name for the folder.

12. Create a new grade item and click Save.

13. Ensure that it is selected from the grade item drop-down list.

14. In the Out Of field, enter 10.

15. Click Create, Done, and then Save.



16. Enroll the learner in your course into the group that you just created.

17. Impersonate the learner and make a submission to the group assignment submission folder.

18. Impersonate the instructor again and access the submission folder.

19. Evaluate the submission and in the Score field, enter a value.

20. Click Save Draft.

21. Click Back to Submissions and on the submissions list view page, select the check box of the group, and then click Publish Feedback.

22. After a couple of minutes, observe that you receive a grade item update notification.

PRB0044375The value of grade items is inconsistent on the Manage Grades page, that is, the Weight value is rounded but the Max. Points value is not rounded.



1. Log in to Brightspace Learning Environment as an instructor.

2. In a course, go to the Grades tool.

3. Click Settings, and then click the Calculation Options tab.

4. In the Grading System area, select Weighted.

5. Click Save, confirm your change, and then click Close.

6. On the Manage Grades page, from the New button, select Item.

7. Click Numeric and enter a name for the grade item.

8. In the Maximum Points field, enter 3.75.

9. In the Weight field, enter 3.75.


11. On the Manage Grades page, observe that the value in the Max. Points column is as you entered it (3.75), but the value in the Weight column is rounded up (3.8).



PRB0045271In a weighted grade book, when you create a new grade item and put it into a grade category that has the Distribute weights by points across all items in the category option selected, and then select the Bonus check box, the Weight field becomes uneditable until after you save the grade item. The default weight is set to 0.

As a workaround, when you create your grade item, select the Bonus check box when you first begin editing the grade item, enter the value in the Weight field, and then select the grade category that has the Distribute weights by points across all items in the category option selected. The value in the Weight field remains as you entered it and you can still edit it before you save.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.3 SP5.


1. In a course in Brightspace Learning Environment, go to the Grades tool.

2. Ensure the grade book is set to Weighted.

3. Create a new category and enter a name.

4. In the Distribution area, select Distribute weights by points across all items in the category.


6. Create a new grade item and assign it to the category you created.

7. Select the Bonus check box and notice that the Weight field becomes uneditable.

8. Click Save and Close. By default, a weight of 0 is assigned to the item.

9. Edit the grade item and observe that you can now modify the weight.

PRB0053663If you are using the Arabic language in your instance of Brightspace Learning Environment, the chart containing grades statistics is incorrectly formatted and does not fully display.



1. As an administrator in Brightspace Learning Environment, go to Account Settings.

2. In the Locale & Language area, from the Preferred Locale and Language drop-down list, select the Arabic language.


4. Go to Grades and ensure there is at least one grade item for the course.

5. From a grade item's context menu, select View Statistics.

6. Observe that the chart that is supposed to show the grade statistics is incorrectly formatted, and does not fully display.



HTML Editor

PRB0054411The HTML Editor table properties of width and height only interpret values in pixels, rather than in pixels or percentages.



1. Access a course in Brightspace Learning Environment.

2. In Content, create a module and then from the Upload/Create button, select Create a File.

3. Insert a table of any size, 3 x 3, for example.

4. Select the table and from the table button, select Table Properties.

5. Enter values in both the Width and Height fields, and click Update.

6. Click the HTML Source Editor button and find the table style tag with the width and height values.

7. Observe that the values are in pixels.

PRB0045374If you create or edit HTML files in Content and add empty paragraph tags between paragraph tags that contain text, the window in editing mode shows the empty lines between the lines with text, but the published topic does not show the empty lines, which is the expected behavior. The HTML Editor should omit the empty lines in all views.

1. In Brightspace Learning Environment, go to the Content tool.

2. Create a new HTML file in a module and enter a topic title.

3. Click the HTML Source Editor icon and add the following code:1st paragraph5th paragraph

4. Click Save.

5. Notice that in the HTML editor window, there are three blank lines between the lines with text.

6. Click Publish.



7. When you view the published topic, observe that the blank lines do not appear between the lines with text.

Manage Files

PRB0054362If you create a folder called QuickLinks in Manage Files, upload a file to it, and then try to add that file to a content topic, an error occurs saying the content topic cannot be found.



1. In Brightspace Learning Environment, go to Manage Files.

2. Create a folder and name it QuickLinks.

3. Upload any file to the folder.

4. Go to the Content tool.

5. From the Upload/Create button, select Add from Manage Files.

6. Select the file in the QuickLinks folder and click Add.

7. Click the link to the file you just added from Manage Files.

8. Observe the error message that reads, "The file associated with this content topic cannot be found."

Notifications

PRB0054205Regardless of whether the d2l.Tools.Discuss.DisplayNotificationMessageBody configuration variable is set to ON or OFF, instant notifications for the Discussions tool contain the body text of the discussion post.



1. Access Brightspace Learning Environment as an administrator.

2. From the Admin Tools menu, select Config Variable Browser.

3. Browse to the d2l.Tools.Discuss.DisplayNotificationMessageBody configuration variable and set it to ON.

4. As a learner, post to a discussion topic that you're subscribed to.

5. In the instant notification the learner receives, notice that the body text of the post is included.



6. Return to the Config Variable Browser and set d2l.Tools.Discuss.DisplayNotificationMessageBody to OFF.

7. As a learner, post to a discussion topic that you're subscribed to.

8. Observe that when the configuration variable is turned off, in the instant notification the learner receives, the body text of the post is still included.

Quizzes

PRB0045804In some cases, there might be inconsistencies in the recorded number of completed and graded quiz attempts on the quiz list page due to users who have unenrolled, and this could affect the average score that is calculated.

As a workaround, after a user has unenrolled, in the quiz grading area turn off the Published option for the quiz, save, and then turn it on again. The number of attempts on the quiz list page should be updated.



1. Access an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment that has at least three learners enrolled.

2. Create a quiz.

3. As each of the three learners, complete the quiz.

4. View the quiz list page and notice that x/3 displays (x can be anything).

5. As an administrator, unenroll a single learner.

6. On the quiz list page, observe that the count still shows a total of three attempts.

PRB0053454If you grade a quiz attempt that has random sections, the random section summary subtotal does not display.



1. In a course in Brightspace Learning Environment, access Quizzes and click New Quiz.

2. Give the quiz a name and make it active.

3. In the Properties tab, click Add/Edit Questions.

4. From the New button, select Section.

5. Give the section a name and click Save.



6. On the quiz page, from the New button, select Random Section.

7. Give the random section a name and click Save.

8. Add a question of any type to the standard section and save.

11. Impersonate a learner in the course and take the quiz.

12. Stop the impersonation.

13. Grade the quiz attempt and view each section's subtotal.

14. Observe that the subtotal for the random section does not display.
