FeaturesBrightspace Learning Environment

Daylight Experience - Improvements to My Courses widget | NewImprovements to the My Courses widget include the following items:

Users can now include a catalog and custom image in Copy Course Components, Bulk Course Copy, course templates, import content, and export content. Select the image as a component during the copy, export, or import workflow.



Users can display the course code in the widget using a widget setting.

Figure 1: By setting the Show Course Code on the Customize Widget settings, the code appears below the course name in the My Courses list.

The course search functionality has been improved.

For the purposes of the early release of the Daylight Experience, it is recommended that you only turn on the Daylight Experience in test environments. By installing Daylight in your test environment, you can see how it affects core tools and workflows in Brightspace Learning Environment and follow the progress each month as we apply more Daylight design updates across the product suite.

Quizzes - Create / edit Short Answer questions | UpdatedAs another stage in the visual redesign of the Quizzes tool, the Short Answer (SA) question creation and editing layouts have been updated. Administrators and instructors can opt in or out of this new look and feel.

Some additional updates were made to Short Answer questions along with the visual redesign:

All answers for a blank are assessed using the same comparison method, that is, either Text (case insensitive text), Case-Sensitive Text, or Regular Expression. Each blank can still be assessed using a different method. In the original experience, each answer for a blank can be assessed using a different method.

Points for each blank are calculated automatically and evenly distributed. In the original experience, each blank can be weighted differently.

Configuration Variable Global Change





Moderate impact to administrators due to the change in the Quizzes > create/edit Short Answer question user interface.

Administrators can opt in to create or edit Short Answer questions using the updated create/edit Short Answer questions user interface.

This feature is dependent on the Authentication Service microservice in the Brightspace Cloud.

To enable the new Short Answer question experience (along with the other new question experiences) for instructors at any org level, turn on the d2l.Tools.Quizzes.NewExperienceOpt-In configuration variable.

To return to the original user interface for the org unit, in the Welcome to the new Question Creation Experience! flyout, click Turn it off.

Moderate impact to instructors due to the change in the Quizzes > create/edit Short Answer question user interface.

To use the new create/edit Short Answer questions user interface, in the Welcome to the new Question Creation Experience! flyout, click Leave it on. To return to the original user interface for the org unit, click Turn it off.

If you do not see the new create/edit Short Answer question user interface, contact your administrator and request that they enable the appropriate configuration variable.

Slight impact to administrators due to a new configuration variable and permissions that must be set to use the URKUND integration.

The d2l.3rdParty.Urkund.ServiceUrl configuration variable must have an Org Value set and a remote plugin created for this integration to function.

Permissions must be set within the URKUND integration to determine which features are available to users.

Contact your D2L Account Manager to request URKUND contact details,the Launch Point URL, and LTI Secret to set up the URKUND integration. Direct all sales, support, and implementation questions to URKUND.

Fixed IssuesTo keep you informed about the improvements D2L has made to Brightspace Learning Environment, the Fixed Issues List consists of issues that have been fixed in the current release, unless otherwise noted.

Assignments

PRB0052679Previously, if multiple users made simultaneous changes to assignment submission folder grade association settings, the assessment might have not properly connected to the grade book.

Now, if multiple users make simultaneous changes to assignment submission folder grade association settings, the assessment properly connects to the grade book.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.3.0.

To reproduce this fix:

1. Log in to Brightspace Learning Environment and access a test course.

2. On the navbar, select Assignments.

3. Click New Submission Folder, enter a name, and click Save and Close.

4. Navigate to the grade book and create two grade items.

5. Return to the Assignments tool and open the edit submission folder page in two different browser windows.

6. In the first window, set the Grade Item to one of the newly created items and click Save.

7. In the second window, select Restrictions to move away from the Properties tab.

8. In the second window, return to the Properties tab.

9. Observe that no grade item is listed as being associated to the folder.

10. Navigate to Manage Grades from either window and observe that your grade item has an association listed.

11. Return to the edit submission folder page and observe that a grade item is set on the submission folder Properties tab, as expected.

12. From the Grade Item drop-down list, select another item to associate the folder to and click Save.

13. Observe that the grade item is associated, as expected.



Accessibility

PRB0050065Previously, the color of many buttons in Brightspace Learning Environment was not 100% WCAG AA compliant.

Now, the color of many buttons in Brightspace Learning Environment is 100% WCAG AA compliant.

1. Log in to any Brightspace Learning Environment 10.5.1 instance.

2. Access a course.

3. Click on the Content tool.

4. Create or access a module.

5. Observe that the color of the New, Save, and Save and Close buttons are as expected.

Brightspace Banner Adapter

PRB0050438Previously, if a course with the Last Date of Attendance and Drop Ungraded Items options selected had one or more users with no Adjusted Final Grade or Calculated Final Grade, an internal error appeared when you attempted to export grades to the SIS.

Now, if a course with the Last Date of Attendance and Drop Ungraded Items options selected has one or more users with no Adjusted Final Grade or Calculated Final Grade, you can successfully export grades to the SIS, as expected.


1. Set up the grade export process with Last Date of Attendance.

2. Verify that d2l.Tools.Grades.ExportToSIS.SISPassword and d2l.Tools.Grades.ExportToSIS.SISUsername are correctly set.

3. In a course, verify that the course grading uses a Letter Scheme.

4. Set up the grades to drop ungraded items and to use Final Adjusted Grades.

5. For a user in the course, leave the Final Adjusted Grade empty.

6. Click Export to SIS.

7. Observe that the export process runs successfully without error.



Brightspace platform

PRB0053714Previously, when you used Mozilla Firefox® or Microsoft Internet Explorer® browsers, and you had enabled the Personal Dashboard, Course Setup Tour, and My Courses at the same time, the homepage and the MyCourses widget did not load completely.

Now, when you use Mozilla Firefox® or Microsoft Internet Explorer® browsers, and you enable the Personal Dashboard, Course Setup Tour, and My Courses at the same time, the homepage and the MyCourses widget loads, as expected.

PRB0053607Previously, when you copied a course, the Calendar tool displayed duplicate events for each quiz availability date.

Now, when you copy a course, the Calendar tool displays only one event for each quiz availability date, as expected.


PRB0053885Previously, on the minibar, when you clicked Select a Course, you might have observed that it took a long time to load the list of courses.

Now, on the minibar, when you click Select a Course, the list of courses loads in a reasonable amount of time, as expected.


Content

PRB0052789Previously, if you had two content modules with start dates in the next seven days, and the Content Arrangement was set to Content Type, an error occurred when you tried to view the Course Schedule.

Now, if you have two content modules with start dates in the next seven days, and the Content Arrangement is set to Content Type, you can view the Course Schedule, as expected.



1. Go to Content and create two content modules.

2. Click Settings, and from the Content Arrangement drop-down, select Content Type.

3. Click Save.

4. Edit the first module you created, and set the start date to tomorrow.

5. Edit the second module you created, and set the start date to two days from now.

6. Go to the Course Schedule.



7. Observe that you can view the Course Schedule, as expected.

PRB0053751Previously, when you uploaded binary files using the upload content API, these files were incorrectly converted to UTF-8 format.

Now, the upload content API contains an optional parameter that supports base64-encoded files. As a result, binary files are not incorrectly converted to UTF-8 format.


Customizations

PRB0052565Previously, when you set up a standard data export, the data export was triggered at the organization's timezone and not at the user's timezone. The description of the trigger time in the user interface did not clearly state that the timezone being used was the organization's timezone. As a result, the pickup and dropoff files of the data export process were missed by other processes.

Now, the description of the standard data export trigger time in the user interface better describes the timezone that is used.


PRB0052808Previously, when you deleted a course after it had been added to the list of courses to export, but before it could be recalculated and exported, a call to the following API failed but did not terminate the entire export process:

/d2l/api/le/(version)/(orgUnitId)/grades/final/calculated/all

Now, when you delete a course after it has been added to the list of courses to export, but before it can be recalculated and exported, a call to the following API skips the deleted course and proceeds to the next course, as expected:

PRB0053338Previously, the Course Learning Outcome Evaluation (CLOE) data export failed and displayed an error when it encountered a grade scheme name that included strings in excess of 30 characters. You might have also observed that the AssessmentThresholdCriteria was limited to two characters even though it can be set to 100% in Brightspace Learning Environment.

Now, the CLOE data export runs successfully when it encounters a grade scheme name that includes strings in excess of 30 characters. The AssessmentThresholdCriteria is also set to 100%, as expected.




Discussions

PRB0053855Previously, when you saved a discussion post as a draft and published it while you were in Grid View, the post became unavailable.

Now, when you save a discussion post as a draft and publish it while you are in Grid View, the post is published and available, as expected.



1. In a test course, create a new discussion forum and topic.

2. Ensure that the d2l.Tools.Discuss.EnableGridView and the d2l.Tools.Discuss.SaveDrafts configuration variables are turned on.

3. Ensure that the learner role has the Discussions > See Grid View permission enabled at the course offering level.

4. As a learner, navigate to the Discussions tool > Settings and ensure that Grid View is set.

5. In the discussion forum, start a new discussion thread and save it as a draft.

6. View the draft using the You have ( 1 ) draft(s) saved in this topic. alert and publish it.

7. Observe that the discussion post is published and available, as expected.

Email

PRB0053456Previously, if a user pasted an image in the body of an email, that image was saved (with a unique name) in the organization's files area.

Now, a user is not permitted to paste an image in the body of an email. Users can still use the attachment feature to attach files to an email.


PRB0052788Previously, when you attempted to email a large classlist that had forwarding enabled, and if you added all the email addresses in the TO or CC fields, you might have observed that it caused the sending out of the email to be delayed.

Now, if you attempt to email a large classlist that has forwarding enabled, and if you add all the email addresses in the TO or CC fields, you are prompted to move email addresses to the BCC field. This change prevents errors and delays with outgoing email.




Grades

PRB0053602Previously, when a learner's mark on a grade item was exempted, the No grade received release condition still functioned as though the user had a grade.

Now, when a learner's mark on a grade item is exempted, the No grade received release condition does not function as though the user has a grade.



1. Ensure that the d2l.Tools.System.Features.IsExemptionsEnabled configuration variable is turned on.

2. Access a test course with learners enrolled in it.

3. On the navbar, click Grades and navigate to Manage Grades.

4. Click New > Item > Numeric.

5. Enter a name and click Save and Close.

6. On the navbar, click Content > Upload/Create > Create a File.

7. Enter a title, include some text in the HTML Editor, and click Publish.

8. Click Add Dates and Restrictions.

9. Under Release Conditions, click Create.

10. Set the Condition Type to No grade received.

11. Select the grade item created in the previous steps and click Create.

12. Click Update.

13. Navigate to Manage Grades and from the context menu of your grade item, select Enter Grades.

14. Select the check box next to a learner's name, click Exempt, and then click Save and Close.

15. On the navbar, click Classlist and impersonate the learner you exempted from the grade item.

16. Navigate to Content and observe that the topic is visible.

17. End impersonation of the learner and return to Manage Grades.

18. From the context menu of your grade item, select Enter Grades.

19. Select the check box next to the learner's name, click Unexempt, enter a grade for the learner, and click Save and Close.

20. Return to Classlist and impersonate the same learner as before.

21. Navigate to Content and observe that the content topic is no longer visible, as expected.

22. End impersonation of the learner and return to Manage Grades.

23. From the context menu of your grade item, select Enter Grades.



24. Select the check box next to a learner's name, click Exempt, and then click Save and Close.

25. Return to Classlist and impersonate the same learner.

26. Navigate to Content and observe that the content topic is not visible.

PRB0053491Previously, if a course had sections with end dates, those section enrollments were filtered out when you exported grades and chose to export the section membership information.

Now, if a course has sections with end dates, these section enrollments are included, as expected.


PRB0053370In some cases, when changes were made to the Final Adjusted Grade denominator but not the numerator, changes were not saved in the Grades tool.

Now, changes made to the Final Adjusted Grade denominator and numerator are saved in Grades, as expected.



1. Log in to Brightspace Learning Environment and access a test course with learners enrolled.

2. On the navbar, click Grades and click Settings.

3. On the Calculation Options tab, ensure that Automatically keep final grades updated is selected.

4. Return to Manage Grades, click New > Item.

5. Select Numeric, enter a name, and click Save and Close.

6. Navigate to Enter Grades and click Switch to Spreadsheet View.

7. Grade the newly created item for one of the users and ensure the user does not have a perfect score.

8. Click Save and confirm your changes by clicking Yes in the dialog box.

9. From the Final Adjusted Grade context menu, select Grade All.

10. In the Final Adjusted Grade column, click the green chevron to transfer the Final Calculated Grade information into the Final Adjusted Grade column.

11. Make a change to the denominator in the Final Adjusted Grade column.

12. Click Save and Close and confirm your changes by clicking Yes in the dialog box.

13. Observe that the changes are saved, as expected.



PRB0053879Previously, in the Grades tool, when you attempted to bulk grade learners who appeared in a grade item by selecting the Grade All option, you might have encountered a Grade object does not exist error.

Now, in the Grades tool, you can successfully bulk grade learners who appear in a grade item by selecting the Grade All option.


Groups

PRB0053967Previously, in the Groups tool, when you clicked Groups, you might have observed that it took a long time to load the list of groups.

Now, in the Groups tool, when you click Groups, the list of groups loads in a reasonable amount of time, as expected.

This issue was fixed as part of a later Brightspace platform 10.6.9 bundle.

HTML Editor

PRB0053541Previously, you could not preview or insert MathML equations from the HTML Editor.

Now, you can preview and insert MathML equations from the HTML Editor, as expected.



1. Log in to Brightspace Learning Environment and access a test course.

2. On the navbar, click Quizzes.

3. Click Question Library, click New and choose any of the available question types.

4. Toggle the Question Text field to full screen.

5. From the context menu of the Equation Editor, select MathML equation.

6. Observe that the Generate a preview link and Insert function, as expected.

PRB0051561When you have an exponent in the denominator or numerator of a fraction, and copy either the denominator or numerator, and paste it on a new line, the display of the equation breaks from that point onwards.

The Graphical Equation Editor has been updated and now, when you have an exponent in the denominator or numerator of a fraction, and copy either the denominator or numerator, and paste it on a new line, the equation displays as expected.





1. Open the Graphical Equation Editor (within a discussion post, announcement item, or anywhere that has the HTML Editor tool).

2. Create a fraction that has an exponent in the denominator or numerator.

3. Copy either the numerator or the denominator with the exponent expression.

4. Paste the fraction on a new line.

5. View the Equation Editor source.

6. Observe the addition of an <msup> tag.

7. View the Equation Editor source and observe that the <msup> tag is used, as expected.

Integrations

PRB0052971Enhancements have been made to Holding Tank to further secure critical pieces of information. As a result, you might encounter slower processing times when performing a batch import.


Navigation and Themes

Quicklinks

PRB0047110Previously, when you created an activity using the Content tool, the title of the object was set to the quicklink location. As a result, when you viewed the activity in a report, the item was labeled with its quicklink location.

Now, when you create an activity using the Content tool, the title of the object appears, as expected.



For scenario 1:



1. In a test course, go to Content.

2. Create a new module, click New, and then add a new discussion.

3. Add information to the discussion and then publish it.

4. Click Add dates and restrictions and then set the start date for tomorrow and the due date for next week.

5. Click Update.

6. Impersonate a student role, go to course home and then check the calendar widget.

7. Observe that the start date item and the due date item displays the item names, as expected.

For scenario 2:

1. In a test course, go to the Course Builder tool.

2. Create a new activity, such as an assignment submission folder, quiz, or discussion.

3. Go to the Content tool Table of Contents.

4. Create a new activity, such as an assignment submission folder, quiz, or discussion.

5. After the activity is saved, go to Table of Contents > Related Tools > View Reports.

6. Observe that the items created from Course Builder and from Table of Contents show the correct titles, as expected.

PRB0053592Previously, when using the new Quizzing experience, if you attempted to edit a question that originated from a branched survey, you might have encountered an error.

PRB0044103When an announcement has an image inserted within the message, the exported announcement does not include the image (despite including Course Files). Attachments are included, but inserted images are not.


To reproduce this issue:

1. In a test course, create an announcement.

2. Use Insert Stuff to add an image to the announcement.

3. Attach a second image to the announcement and click Publish.

4. Export the announcement and include course files.

5. Observe that the exported announcement includes the attached image but does not include the inserted image.

PRB0052883New announcements appear in gray. These announcements should appear in blue to highlight that they are new and unread.



1. In a test course, enroll a learner.

2. In the News (Announcements) widget, create a new announcement.

3. Impersonate the learner and observe the red dot in the minibar indicating that you have an alert.

Assignments

PRB0052909In Assignments, if a role does not have the See First Names and See Last Names permissions enabled for the User Information Privacy tool, a user cannot sort assignment submissions by submission date. The sort option appears, but when a user attempts to sort the assignment submissions, the page refreshes and the assignment submissions are not sorted.

A second User column also appears containing the Delete icon, which should appear under the Delete column instead.





1. Create two users, an instructor and a learner, and enroll them in a test course.

2. In the test course, create an assignment submission folder.

3. Impersonate the learner and submit a file to the submission folder.

4. Impersonate the instructor and observe that you can sort the assignment submissions by submission date.

5. Edit the instructor role permissions and for the User Information Privacy tool, turn off the See First Names and See Last Names permissions.

6. Impersonate the instructor again.

7. Observe that you cannot sort the assignment submissions by submission date and note that a second User column appears containing the Delete icon.

PRB0053696When you try to associate an assignment submission folder to a second grade item, you might encounter an error.



1. Create an assignment submission folder.

2. Open two tabs for the Edit Folder page.

3. In one tab, associate the assignment submission folder to a grade item and click Save.

Awards

PRB0053409When you revoke an award from a user and you have another award with an associated release condition that specifies a user needs to earn the revoked award, the new award is automatically issued to the user.



1. Log in to an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment with the Awards tool enabled.

2. Navigate to a course and create an award (badge or certificate).

3. From the context menu of a learner's name, select Issue > select the newly created award > provide a reason for issuing the award.

4. Wait for the award to show up in the Classlist award area for the learner.



5. Revoke the award you issued the learner and enter a Revoke Reason.

6. Create another award.

7. Click Add a Release Condition > Award > Award Earned, and select the award created in step 2.

8. Wait for the release condition evaluation task to run.

9. Observe that the learner has earned the award created in step 6 even though the learner has not satisfied the release condition because the first award created was revoked.

1. Create a new theme in a course offering.

2. Edit the Homepage Background and select black as the background color.



3. Edit the Page Background and select blue as the background color.

4. Click Save.

5. Create a new navbar using the theme you created.

6. Apply the navbar to a homepage that uses widgets.

7. Observe that the widgets cause the height of the page to require a scrollbar.

8. Using Internet Explorer 11 or Safari 9.1.1 browsers navigate to the newly modified homepage.

9. Observe that the background area between widgets is not visible. You can only see a blue background on the entire page and you do not see black around the widgets.

Calendar

PRB0052564When you use the English (United Kingdom) (en-gb) locale, the short date format is currently set to m/d/yyyy. It should be set to dd/mm/yyyy.

As a workaround, create a custom locale with the dd/mm/yyyy short date format and set it as the default date format.



1. In an instance where the English (United Kingdom) (en-gb) locale is used, from the Admin Tools menu, click Locale Management.

2. From the English (United Kingdom) (en-gb) context menu, click View Locale.

3. Observe that the short date format is set to m/d/yyyy.

Brightspace Capture

Content

PRB0052384When you change the due date on a content item, duplicate events appear in the Course Schedule for a few minutes.



1. Create a course and import a large amount of content that needs more than one page to view.

2. Create a new checklist with an early due date so that it displays on the first page of the Content > Course Schedule > Full Schedule page.

3. Edit the checklist due date so that it displays on the second page of the Content > Course Schedule > Full Schedule page.

4. View the Full Schedule page and observe the following irregularities:

the edited item is not there,

the edited item is there but in the wrong order,

the edited item shows up twice (if you click Load more).

1. In a test course enroll 10 learners.

2. Navigate to the Groups tool.

3. Create a new group category and create 10 groups of 1 in the category.

4. Create 10 discussion forums for the groups with 10 discussion topics each.

5. Navigate to the Discussions tool and confirm that you have 10 discussion forums, each with 10 topics. You must see the scroll bar on the page.

6. Navigate to the Groups tool and make note of the learner who is enrolled in group 1.



7. In the Discussions tool, delete the group 1 discussion topic from forums 2 to 9, but do not delete the group 1 discussion topic from forums 1 and 10.

8. Impersonate the learner, whose name you made a note of.

9. Navigate to the Discussions tool.

10. Observe the white space between discussion forum 1 and 10.

Brightspace ePortfolio and Brightspace ePortfolio Mobile

PRB0043454In Brightspace ePortfolio, on the Sharing Groups page, you can only search for courses using the first few characters of the course name that are preceded by a space. If you search for characters after the space, you do not get any search results.

1. In a test environment, create a new course offering called Test Course, and enroll a single learner.

2. From the Admin Tools menu, select Brightspace ePortfolio.

3. On the Sharing Groups page, click New Sharing Group.

4. Click Add Users.

5. Search for the course using the word Test.

6. Observe that you get search results, as expected.

7. Search for the course using the word Course.

8. Observe that you do not get any search results.

PRB0045274In Brightspace ePortfolio, when you try to edit a presentation from the dashboard, you are directed to the org unit where it was created. As a result, you cannot attach items such as rubric assessments that exist at the course offering level.

As a workaround, edit Brightspace ePortfolio presentations from My Items in order to attach items that exist at the course offering level.

If a user calls the GET /d2l/api/lp/1.6/outypes API, information is retrieved for Groups=4 and Sections=6. As such, any subsequent calls that are made for a section do not return any information.



1. In a test course, create a section.

2. Navigate to the Brightspace Valence test tool.

3. Log in to a site and call the GET /d2l/api/lp/1.6/outypes/ API.

Surveys

5. On the Edit Survey page, click Invite Participants.
