A MESSAGE FROM OUR MAIN SPONSORS - FROSTS

A warm welcome to everyone attending this year's 67th running of the Frostssponsored Brighton Speed Trials - the oldest event of its kind in the British motoringcalendar.

As the area's leading car retailers, we are delighted once again to be closelyassociated with such a prestigious occasion. Every year, crowds flock to the seafrontin their thousands to witness a day of high speed action. For many of those actuallycompeting, the Brighton Speed Trials is like an annual pilgrimage and we applaudeveryone who makes it to the start line of the famous quarter mile course.

Since last year's Trials,we aretaking stock of another 12 months which has roared by.

The most significant event has been the opening of our SEATdealership at FranklinRoad, Portslade. From day one, this new franchise has been an overwhelmingsuccess - we've even surprised ourselves by just how popular the SEATbrand is.

It has provided us with the opportunity to attract a whole raft of new customers toFrosts and we are delighted that many existing customers are also choosing to buySEATas well.

SEAT aside, our other franchises are currently experiencing heavy sales activity;Vauxhall, in this their centenary year, have unveiled the new Signum flagship modeland the Meriva MPV,to give the franchise its strongest ever line-up. With the new XJnow firmly established, our Jaguar franchise continues to expand whilst Chrysler,Jeepand Lotus all continue to attract an ever broader group of customers.

If you like sourcing new or used cars on the internet, then look no further than our website, www.frostsacars.co.ukft's now officially the best car retailer's site in the UKbecause we have recently won the highly regarded Digital Dealerof the Yeartitle at theannual Motor Trader Industry Awards 2003 in London.

We beat some of the biggest names in the industry, with the judges giving specialpraise for the effectiveness of the Frosts Finance Calculator. The Calculator instantlyshows car buyers what vehicles are available, based on a purchaser's affordablemonthly expenditure.

Don't forget, if you are looking to buy a brand new car, this September saw thechangeover to the 53 registration plate. There are some cracking deals to be had. Justvisit anyone of our showrooms, or our website, to see what we have on offer.

Before then, of course, thanks for your support of this great event. Enjoy your day atthe Speed Trials.

such an exciting event, which is a major attraction for residents and visitors alike.

Brighton Speed Trials

The Brighton and Hove Motor Club, with grateful acknowledgement to our sponsors FrostCars Limited, and to Brighton and Hove City Council for their valued cooperation presentThe Frosts Brighton National Speed Trials, 2003.

Many regular attendees will know that this brilliant spectacle is "not quite as easy as itlooks." Strictly controlled by overall statutory regulations, together with local rulings, theexacting organisation that goes into the event is prodigious; commencing as it does manymonths before the great day arrives.

Regulars will also be aware that the participants, the actual competitors, are strictly andpainstakingly "vetted." Unless suitable qualifying experience is documented and validated, there is no room or place for beginners.

Once on the grid, prior to the starting signal, the driver is completely on his or her own.Experience and judgement comes into immediate play and for the few precious secondsavailable the driver has to make decisions that will either win or lose a worthwhile place inthe timing results. Driving skill and knowledge of the car's capability go hand in hand toobtain a credible performance and hopefully a course record.

Members of the Brighton and Hove Motor Club perform their duties and responsibilitiestirelessly year after year to make this event a success. Our reward is prior to the eventbeginning, to pause for a moment to take in the quite awe inspiring spectacle of so manyspectators: fans, enthusiasts, and visitors, looking down from the Madeira Drive terraces;some of whom have travelled great distances to be yet again at their favourite South Coastmotor event. For us that is truly a great return for our many weeks of preparation.

These events could not be possible were it not for the dedicated interest andencouragement so freely given by our immediate sponsors, Frost Cars Limited.

Wewish all our supporters a worthwhile meeting and a safe return home.

VINTAGE AND HISTORIC RACINGThe Vintage and Historic Class has this year produced an exciting and varied entry of famous cars thathave made motor racing history.Large capacity cars tend to dominate the entry. However, Mac Hulbert in the famous Raymond Mays ERA4RD will be keen to notch up yet another class win for this very fast and competitive pre-war racing car.Records show outright Brighton wins with FTD for Mays in 1946-1947-1948-1950 and for Ken Whartonin 1955-1956. The last appearance at Brighton was in 1991 when Anthony Mayman won the class. This year is the return of the Bentley's with no less than five trying for honours. Andrew Day with thepowerful supercharged 3(8 litre, Geoffrey Ford with another 3/8 litre and Bob Burrell In the superchargedBentley Royce will provide serious opposition for Mac Hulbert.A pair of Cooper Bristols driven by Neil Davies and Michael Parr could be surprising fast over the shortquarter mile sprint course, and Kerry Horan in the evocative Allard Steyr can be quick on it's day.As is a tradition here at Brighton we have a race within a race. the VSCC Handicap. The eligible carshave handicaps set by the Vintage Sport Car Club.John Redman in the Amilcar/Riley will be quick and veteran Tom Delaney will be trying hard. PeterStevens in the 1929 Dry Lakes Special could well be a dark horse. A selection of Austin 7, Riley, MG andBentleys will be having fun. There is a good chance that for the first time a driver could go home withboth awards.

BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS 2003 - The Motor Cycles

Well it's the time of year again for the annual dash up the sea front and so on behalf of the VMCC Sprint Section and itsriders I would like to thank Brighton and Hove Motor Club for their kind invitation to us to field the motorcycle contingentonce again. Our thanks of course must also go to the events sponsors Frosts and Brighton and Hove City Council for theircontinuing support. Thank you.

What is it about our sport, I don't rightly know, but motorcycle sprinting certainly seems to run through the generations. After a lifetime's sport of sprinting Alan Morgan has decided that enough is enough and it is now time to let somebody elsehave a go. so now Richard, his son, is the new rider of the 1930's Rudge Sprinter, after competing with his father on today'smodern superblkes, Richard is gOing to have to learn a complete new style of riding, but sure enough as one Father andSon team step aside so we have another join the ranks. Chris IIlman on his Zenith and son Mark riding a 350 Booth Ariel, let's not forget the Grainger brothers, Fred and Mick, who, no doubt, will have ridden their machines as usual to the eventfrom Plymouth, it seems that once motorcycling is in the blood it Is very hard to give it up.

As usual here at the Brighton Speed Trials we have a broad spectrum of machinery ranging from a 1923 Brooklands ZenithJAP, ridden by Chris IIlman, right through today's modern Superbikes, namely the Yamaha Hayabusa in standard road goingtrim as well as the full on Drag Race versions, both of which are being campaigned here today.

Will we see a run today under 9.00 seconds, maybe if both the weather and track conditions hold good for the riders. Lastyear the guys were knocking on the door, in the top 6 run off for the motorcycles, Roger Simmons managed to lay down a

time of 9.14 secondswith a terminal speedof 156mph only to be followedby DavidHollandwho put in a time of 9.03 secondsand if we go backto September2000, DavidHughesmanagedto put in a run at 9.00 secondsdead, with a terminal speedof1S2mph. I think this shows that the fireworks are there,it's just down to lighting the fuse at the right time. I'm sure that if themotorcyclesgo below the 9-second barrierthen Brightonwill know about it by the volume of the cheer that goes up.

Again this yearwe haveanentry from Germany,MichaelHuebywith his very trick KawasakiTurbo, known as "NOS Fearatu".Last year in practice the turbo let go at the end of the Quarterand that was his day finished, some luck. Let's hopethat hehas exorcisedall the demons this yearand hasa better day,it's a longway from Germanyjust to watch the rest of the ridersfrom the sidelines.

As for the 3-wheeledbrigade things aregoing to changethis year, it seems that after a very successful run of some sevenyears hereat Brighton, Dave Goddardwith his BakerSuzuki has hung up the helmetand gloves. I just wonder for how longDave! I don't think this will allow John Renwickwith his very clean, meanand extremely fast Vincent outfit to have it allhis own way,as we havea couple of new entries to the 3-wheeled clan this year,so we will haveto wait and seewhat theday brings.

It just leavesme to thank you the spectator for coming to the Brighton SpeedTrials, havea great day and when the day isover a safe journey home.
