8 ISSUE #10 NOVEMBER 2012

As we approach the end of the year I always like to use this time to asses myself and how far I have come over the course of 2012 so far. It's my way of making sure that if there is anything that I'm yet to achieve, or something that I feel I could be doing more of, I know that I still have a couple of months to accomplish things before the year is out.

I'll hold my hands up and honestly say to you that there are still a lot of things left for me to do that I have either neglected due to lack of time (at least that's what I tell myself), or that I have not devoted 100% of my efforts to leaving them incomplete. Why not take a moment and do the same? Ask yourself the following three questions to get you started:

1. Have I regularly been attending the gym?

2. Have I regularly been playing sport?

3. Have I regularly been eating clean?

Of course, these three questions can all be rolled into one: Have I regularly been living a healthy active lifestyle? Answer honestly and then take a few moments to think about how you can improve things for the remainder of this year. Here's four tips of mine to get you going:

Exercise more! This may seem like an obvious answer but exercising just three times a week is all you need to do to start transforming your body and health. And remember that exercise comes in

E d I T O R ’ S N O T Ee d i t o r ’ s n o t emany forms - gyms, bootcamps, Zumba, swimming, Personal Training, CrossFit, cycling, hiking... the list goes on. There's something for everyone so why not book a taster session and see what you enjoy the most?!

Eat more vegetables! Consider the vegetable isle at your local supermarket your new best friend. Try and fill your shopping trolley with as many colours as you can and eat them with every meal. If you're unsure how to cook something simply so what I do and Google it for some recipes.

Get more sleep! Have you ever thought that the reason you are tired in the evenings isn't because of the 8 hour day you've just worked, but because you went to bed at 1am? Sleep is such a vital part of how your body will cope with things the following day. I make sure I have no lights coming from digital clocks or TVs when I sleep so as not to disrupt any part of my 40 winks, and I recommend you do the same.

Set yourself goals! In my mind a life without goals just makes things harder for yourself. If you want to lose weight for example, set yourself a target amount to lose and a time frame for which to accomplish this in. Try and be realistic in your choices and make sure you give it your all. One of two things will then happen: One, you reach your target. If so great, set yourself another one and keep going. Two, you don't reach your target. But I guarantee you that you would have still lost weight, so be proud of this achievement and when you're ready try again. It really is a win-win situation as is a great way to keep yourself motivated.

Use this issue of Brighton Active Magazine to help you on your way and make sure you remember to have fun along the way!

Healthy Regards,

Ash

SOL GILBERT

14 ISSUE #10 NOVEMBER 2012

Hi Sol. Tell us a bit about your mixed martial arts (MMA) careerComing from a boxing background I first became aware of MMA back in 2000 where I began practising wresting and jiu-jitsu. This was around the time of the very first UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) events that are now so popular. It was my first experience of learning a martial art and I was instantly hooked! I would travel up to London to train and quickly began my amateur MMA career where I was unbeaten in the ten fights I had, including at the Combat Sports National Championships. I turned pro after this and won the British & European titles including British Middleweight title in

Former professional mixed martial artist Sol Gilbert talks to us about ZT Fitness, ZT Fight

Skool and Sol Gilbert Ultimate Training

Ultimate Combat MMA. I then fought my way around the circuit and finished my MMA career with Cage Rage where I had some great fights against top opposition.

what made you then decide to launch the ZT brand here in Brighton?

When I wasn't travelling up to London there was no single place I could train out

of here in Brighton that had everything I needed. I'd have to go to one place to work on my boxing, another place for my strength and conditioning,

and another where I'd hire a fitness studio for a couple of

hours to work on my wrestling with a partner. So I decided to open my own

Page 15: Brighton Active Issue 10

ZT (Zero Tolerance) facility in Peacehaven in 2003. It had everything I needed to train myself as well as its members, and also helped entice a superb stable of local fighters including Ryan White, Jack McGee and John Hathaway (now fighting in the UFC). After a brief spell at a second location in Brighton, ZT then moved to its current location just behind Hove Train Station in 2006. It was then that I really knew that this was where I wanted to be.

How have things evolved then from the Peacehaven facility to where you are now in Hove?In Peacehaven we were primarily a fight school, and a tough one at that. We were renowned for training hard so that we could fight easy, long before this tag line ever came about. It was just the way we did things. Now in Hove not only are we still a quality fight school but are also a gym at the forefront of exercise equipment, techniques and technology. I am pleased to have some of the finest trainers and coaches in the business helping people of all ages and abilities and from all walks of life here at ZT. Together we've created a centre of excellence that includes an Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Coach who's competed for his country (Danny Vlad), an Olympic Lifting Coach who's helped his students win gold medals (John Walton), a highly

decorated Muay Thai specialist (Kenshiro) as well as some of the best Personal Trainers and Coaches the South Coast has to offer including Alex Backhouse, Laura Howarth and Jack Laing. As a brand we've done an incredible amount in only a short space of time.

You mentioned being at the forefront of it all. Tell us more about thisAt ZT we like to throw the rule book out of the window to a certain extent. Franchise gyms often have strict rules and limit their own members to how they can train. Here we have challenged the way people are supposed to exercise, and in today's society people are more open minded to what we do which his great. For example, in our Senior Circuit class we have members over 50 years old outdoors whipping battling ropes, swinging kettlebells and throwing medicine balls. They love it! And so do the 12-16 year olds in our ZT Rush Kids classes. We also host Box-X classes which are a step up from regular Boxercise classes. These are still non contact but we help teach you correct boxing techniques and drills.

ZT have also been ambassadors for MYZONE since 2011. With MYZONE our members are able to see just how hard they are working from our monitors in the gym. They earn MEPS (MYZONE Effort Points)

Page 16: Brighton Active Issue 10

for working harder and we're able to host regular internal fitness challenges to provide some friendly competition. I'll even throw my keys into the hat and get involved with it all! I'm also pleased to announce our most recent affiliation with TANITA, where we are able to measure body composition in serious detail right down to the muscle / fat percentage on your right arm compared to your left one!! It's an amazing piece of kit.

I'm also honoured to be invited to Leisure Industry Week each year as a guest speaker. This is a great opportunity for me to share my knowledge, but to also keep up to date with all the exciting going's on within the fitness industry. Many of which you'll see in ZT Fitness before any other fitness facility on the entire South Coast!

Tell us more about your own SGUT brandSGUT (Sol Gilbert Ultimate Training) is my idea of a step up from standard Personal Training. I'm well known for

training Katie Price, and am now pleased to be training Chris Eubank Jr. who has remained undefeated under my tuition. I'm not a trainer

that likes to stand next to you on the treadmill and chat for

half an hour. With me you're there to work, but that's why I deliver serious

results! Every training program I develop for my clients I try out first myself to make

sure it's perfect. I also provide my clients with my own nutrition program and have recently

launched my own SGUT Sports Supplement range to compliment this.

what does ZT Fitness and ZT Fight Skool have planned for the future? We're currently undergoing some exciting updates in the ZT gym and Fight Skool including plenty of new toys for our members to enjoy which will all be in place for the new year. 18 ISSUE #10 NOVEMBER 2012

Hi everyone, hope you're all well. I wanted to use this edition of Brighton Active to share with you all a passion of mine. I am of course referring to my Forever Fit over 50’s training group. The group itself is based in Hove and has been running for a good few years now, but my training team took over at the reigns in October 2011 so we are now celebrating our one year anniversary.

We are of course celebrating this with a special offer, but more on that later...

First of all it would make more sense to look at why this group means so much to me and why it should mean a lot to you too, especially if you have friends or family in our age catchment that you care about. Although we cater for all over 50's the youngest member we currently have is 56, yet the oldest is in her 80’s! I challenge you to come and see who you actually think this lovely lady is and I guarantee you’ll need more than three guesses.

The reason I have such a strong passion towards our Forever Fit group comes from within their own self worth, determination and willingness to continue to learn. And even though they are the one’s learning, they teach me so much just by being themselves. The way I see all the older generation is that without them we wouldn’t be here. So why not teach them how to be fitter and healthier so that their families get to enjoy their time together for as long as possible.

I could sit here and give you lots of statistics and facts as to why it is good for people of all ages to exercise regularly, but we all know these. It is down to us to choose whether to make changes happen and to suggest them to

FOREVER FIT wITH MP PT

others, especially those that are older than ourselves.

We're extremely proud of our members as they continuously choose to come along to our Forever Fit group at least once a week, if not two or three times. This is also down to our group providing such a great social hub for them to be involved with. As well as exercising together our members also enjoy going out for meals each and every month. Forever Fit also has fitness and sport events away from the gym / class environment every now and again, such as a mass walk down the Adur or tenpin bowling.

To see what is included in a Forever Fit membership head to our website at www.martinpetriepersonaltraining.co.uk

As a special offer to celebrate us reaching our anniversary there is currently NO JOINING FEE!! When it comes to exercise, there is no such thing as bad exercise. All exercise is good for you, but not all exercise is smart exercise

There have been numerous studies completed in recent years that have proven that less is definitely more when it comes to exercise. In fact, the science is clear: when it comes to efficient long term fat loss and health, you do not need to exercise more. What you need to do is exercise smarter, increasing the quality / intensity of your exercise, not the quantity of your exercise. Which for those of you who are lacking in time means that, the higher the quality of your exercise, the less you will need to do!

Brighton Bootcamp have devised a Personal Training workout protocol designed to boost metabolism, increasing calorie burn long after a workout has finished. We have designed our workouts to help you increase strength, boost fitness and reduce body-fat fast, but with minimal time commitment. Each of our sessions will have you in and out of the studio in 45 minutes, with each workout taking just 30 minutes. By keeping the workouts short, we can keep the intensity high which will maximise your results.

Personal Training (PT) was once available only to the rich and famous, and even now most

Personal Trainers still charge from £35-£60 per session. This means, that to reap the benefits of a Personal Trainer, you could end up paying out a lot of money! At Brighton Bootcamp we specialise in helping our clients get into great shape fast. With our metabolism boosting workouts you can expect to drop up to 8% body-fat in as little as six weeks. We provide high quality Personal Training but without the hefty price tag!

We have designed our Small Group Personal Training (SGPT) packages to be very cost effective, in fact with

the right package you could end up paying as little as £7.69 per session. Getting into the shape of your life has never been easier with a personalised workout that will help you to:

• Boost metabolism • Blast fat • Build strength • Improve fitness • Increase energy • Re-shape your body

Our unique workouts can help you to achieve any or all of the above. We will

custom design a workout to suit your goals, while taking into account any limitations you may have. Our SGPT package has been designed to allow everyone the chance to experience the benefits of Personal Training, but without the hefty price tag.

2012 has been a great year for Connect as we continue to welcome new members into the box as people are turning to CrossFit as their principal training method. With the results our members are seeing from strength gains to body fat losses it is easy to see why CrossFit is growing so huge. It is simply one of the most effective, fun and addictive ways of whipping your body into shape.

Some recent news from the box:To go with our freshly launched website we have also redesigned our Intro Course so that it is now a 4-week, 8 class course that covers the big foundational lifts and slowly ramps up the intensity of the workouts so that you are ready to join the main classes. You will learn a lot on this course whether you are a beginner or a seasoned lifter and we have become the place to train for other Personal Trainers in the

area which tells you a lot about the standard of our coaching.

We are also pleased to announce the start of our CrossFit Kids classes. Following a similar format to the adult classes of constantly varied, functional movements the kids classes will also have an eye on children’s mechanics and learning patterns with exercises and games to engage their bodies and minds.

The biggest UK CrossFit competition yet is set to take place on the 2 / 3rd November. The divided we Fall games are going to be huge this year with sponsorship by Reebok and over 500 people taking part. Connect has two teams in the event and you can follow all the action on our Facebook page and Blog page across the weekend. If you are a

natural competitor and fancy trying a different sport then get in touch.

With the Olympics just gone we have seen a good number of people enquiring about learning the technical Olympic lifts (including BA Editor, Ash Phelps). These can be hard to learn in a traditional gym environment where you get shouted at for dropping the bar! World, British and Southern masters Olympic champ Coach Holly takes an Olympic lifting class on a Thursday night which will get you up and running with these demanding lifts in no time.

Check out our revamped website for more details on all of the above as well as testimonials, galleries and more information about the Connect Coaches

With Andy Murray winning Britain’s first ever Olympic tennis title and Jonny Marray becoming the first Wimbledon doubles winner since 1936, this year has to go down as one of the most successful in history for British tennis.

HAVE YOU GOT MURRAY OR MARRAY MANIA?

Tennis is a fun and effective way of burning calories, getting fit and staying in shape. If you’ve been gripped by Tennis fever, it’s time to dust off your racket and head down to Withdean Sports Complex, where there are a variety of ways you can get involved in the action. The venue boasts three indoor courts and three floodlit outdoor courts so you can play whatever the weather.

If you haven’t played for a while, casual ‘drop-in’ sessions are a great way to get back into the game. You don’t need any equipment or even a partner! Just turn up, meet other players and benefit from some basic coaching.

Freedom Leisure has just launched ‘Cardio Tennis’ a popular initiative from the USA. If you are looking for a fun new way to get in shape then this is the class for you. Sessions take place on a tennis court and are run by a qualified tennis coach. They are suitable for all levels and incorporate fast paced drill and fun team games to provide you with an enjoyable workout. Music is played during the session to help create a high energy atmosphere and add motivation. “Cardio Tennis is growing in popularity through the UK so we’re really excited to be able to offer it in Brighton,” says Giles Brook, Tennis Coach at Withdean Sports Complex. “The sessions are very sociable but they’re also hard

work. By working on elements like movement, speed and reactions your game will ultimately improve also.”

There’s junior tennis coaching available for aspiring Andy Murrays and Laura Robsons at the Withdean Tennis Academy's hugely successful junior tennis programme. The programme caters for 3-18 year olds and is lead by their team of fully licensed and qualified coaches. The Academy run’s the LTAs ‘Mini Tennis’ Programme, specifically designed for age group tennis. There are also ‘teen’ and ‘girls only’ tennis sessions. Adult coaching is also available for all abilities on the indoor courts and courses run throughout the year.

EAT CLEAN, FEEL ENERGISEd & LOOK INCREdIBLE!

Eating Clean is the practice of eating whole, natural foods such as fruits, grains, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. It means staying away from processed foods including man-made sugar, salt, bad fats (hydrogenated, trans-fat), preservatives and any other ingredients that are unnecessary and are usually the cause of excess body fat and energy slumps.

A person that Eats Clean generally practices the following:

- Eliminates refined sugar- Cooks healthy meals- Packs healthy meals- Drinks a lot of water & green tea- Eats 5-6 small meals per day- Eliminates alcoholic beverages (or significantly limits it)- Always eats breakfast (cereal is NOT a good breakfast!)
