    * Total water usage dropped by 1%last year and has dropped by morethan 10% since 1990.

    * Waste going to the landfill alsodropped by 1% last year and by 8%since 1990, while the amount beingrecycled and/or composted hasmore than tripled.

    * Over the past year, the percent-age of copy paper purchased withrecycled content rose to 74% of total purchases, from 64% last year.

    * Since 1990, the campus has re-duced the amount of fuel used infleet vehicles and during faculty, staff, and student commutes by atleast 20%.

    * The campus has begun work on200 energy efficiency projects thatwill yield cost savings of at least $3million per year and a 23,000 tonreduction in greenhouse gas emis-sions.

The Office of Sustainability hasreleased two new documents thathighlight our campus sustainabilitygoals and accomplishments. To-gether, they set a standard of trans-parency and accountability by defin-ing concrete and measurable goalsand reporting progress towardthose goals. We hope that you findthese documents useful as youincorporate sustainability into yourdaily actions both on and off cam-pus.

The 2009 Campus Sus -tainability Plan defines avision of long-term sustain-ability and de-scribes stepswe are taking in

    the areas of energy, climate,

waste, water, food, green buildings, learning, and more. The Plan in-cludes two new goals: to reducecommuter and campus fleet fuelusage to 25% below 1990 levels andincrease sustainable food purchasesby campus providers to at least20%.

    The 2009 Campus Sustainabil-ity Repor t gives a sustainability

The new school year has begun andthe campus is buzzing with busybodies. While there is much chitter-chatter about classes and exams, theOffice of Sustainability is also creat-ing more dialogue about campus

sustainability among students, faculty, and staff by launching a new cam-paign.

Talking Louder about CampusSustainability is a communicationsproject aimed to encourage involve-ment in campus efforts to reduceelectricity and water use, and helpthe campus make better choices ontransportation, food and purchasingand overall waste reduction. It isfunded by The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF), a fund that rewards up to acumulative of $250,000 each year ingrants to sustainability projects onthe UC Berkeley campus.

The development and implementa-tion of the Talking Louder about Sustainability campaign will be car-ried out by a team of student com-munications associates working with

The Office of Sustainability hosted its first stu-dent Sustainability Forum of the new schoolyear on September 16, 2009 for environmentalclubs to present to those interested in gettinginvolved in sustainability. With over 20 present-ers from various organiza-tions, causes, and campaigns, the forum attracted over 100attendees!

Groups, whose focus rangesfrom starting an organic gar-den (Victory Garden) to vol-unteering for StrawberryCree k clean-up to saving en-ergy (Green Campus), were each allotted 2minutes to speak. Many volunteer and internshipopportunities were presented and as sign-upsheets were passed around, attendees weresupplied with a wealth of information consistingof current sustainability initiatives and resourcesavailable on campus. After the speeches, guestsmingled with the representatives while munching

on delicious, local food. The forumwas certified as a small GreenEvent and made possible throughThe Green Initiative Fund (TGIF).The Office would like to thank all

the presentersand everyonewho came tothe forum.

The purpose of the forum is to increase com-munication and collaborationamong students who care forthe environment. It occurs

twice a semester and is always open to everyone. Our next forum later this fall- will be more of around-table discussion.

Two New Green De par tmen ts : UCPD and Ca l i fo rn ia Ha l lThis past summer, UC Berkeley Police De-partment and California Hall were bothnewly certified as Green Department s.

UCPD achieved 20 points for initiatives thatincluded switching to reusable kitchenware(Bring Your Own/Wash Your Own), install-ing three new water refilling hydration stations, distributing reusable water bottles, eliminatingbottled water, having a green fleet, including sustain-ability in an existingnewsletter, andhanding out newpedometers toencourage walking.

California Hall was awarded with 15 points forinitiatives such as adding a bulletin board onalternative transportation and building energy

usage, hosting a cleanout of the storage area, eliminating all old monitors and excess printers, adding additional beverage and other recyclingcontainers, reducing single use kitchenware, and encouraging those in the building to bringtheir own mugs. Congratulations to bothGreen Departments !

The Green Department and Green Eventcertifications have been popular tools for thecampus to reduce its environmental foot-print. Over the past 6 months, weve certifiedfour Green Department s and over a dozen Green Events . These groups have composted,

eliminated plastic water bottles, served localand organic food, written newsletter articles, and a wide variety of other green steps.

Weve made some changes to the criteria forcertification starting October 1, 2009 . Thereare new points and prerequisites, as well asnew requirements for the number of pointsneeded for certification. As always, depart-ments are encouraged to contact the Office of Sustainability as they begin the certificationprocess and to con-sult the Resource Guide for more in-formation on theprogram.

    persons trash is anothers treasure!

If youre looking to stepup your waste reduction, keep an eye out for Re-Use Station s around

campus, includingDwinelle and Barrows Halls andUnits one and Two. At these sta-tions, you can donate or pick up freeitems, including school supplies, books, paper, and trinkets. Reusingalso extends out of stations, as Re-Use organizes a Reader Give Awayeach semester. ReUse is a studentrun program that is conductedthrough the Campus Recycling and Refuse Services (CRRS). Also, if youre looking for office laptops, furniture, vehicles, and associateditems, check out the Cal Over-stock and Surplu s. There you canfind surplus UC Berkeley property atlow prices. You can auction onlineor shop at their Berkeley location

just two miles away from campus.

    Recycling

Recycling is one of the most appar-ent ways of reducing waste. At UCBerkeley, CRRS handles much of the

dirty work in coordinating the recy-cling on the campus. As CRRS Man-ager Lisa Bauer pointed out, it is

On a campus with over 45,000 fac-ulty, staff and students, UC Berkeleygenerates a considerable amount of waste but has also taken consider-able steps to reduce waste. With allthis talk about greening the campus,

what exactly is considered waste andwhat can be recycled or reused? Itseasiest to think of waste with thefour Rs: Reduce , Reuse , Recycle ,and Rot .

    Reduce

We are presented with many choiceseveryday. Should I buy an individuallypackaged product or in bulk? Inthinking about the environmentalimpacts of products and its packag-

ing, you can become a smarter, greener shopper. Buy quality itemsthat can last and have less packaging,or considering sharing purchaseswith a friend. The most environ-mental thing might be to not buy.

    Reuse

Reusing items is fun, rewarding, andcost-cutting. Reuse food containers, donate and buy from thrift stores, orbetter yet, have a swap-meet with

your friends. Reusing saves the re-sources that would need to be usedif you got the product new. One

important to know what can andcannot be recycled.

Beverage containers : Publicrecycling bins throughout cam-pus accept glass, plastic, and

metal beverage containers --but NOT coffee cups or plasticcups.

Mixed paper : Public recycling binsaccept all paper and cardboard, butEXCLUDE paper cups, food con-taminated paper, tissues, towels, and toilet paper.

No commingling: Be aware thatthe campus does not comminglepaper and beverage containers.

Recycling is simple: just follow thelabeling. Moreover, recycling doesnot end at the bin: UC Berkeley hassalvaged up to 80 to 90 percent of demolition and construction waste. This means that the campuss wastediversion rate, including construc-tion waste, has been increased to57 percentexceeding the 2008goal of 50 percent.

    Rot (Composting)

Let the microbes handle the dirtywork! Food composting is avail-able in four dining halls, numerous

USCA Co-Operative StudentHouses, and campus restaurants. All of the food scraps are collectedand composted offsite. Once com-posted, the material is sold to farm-ers, vineyards, plant nurseries, and

in the bulk landscaping to increasethe health and water retentioncapacity of soil. With the coopera-tion of students, UC staff, and thecomposting vendor, the amount of composted organic waste has in-creased by nearly 50 percent since2005 and 100 percent since 2000.If you are planning an event com-posting bins can be ordered for asmall fee through Campus Recyclingand Refuse Services.

If youre new to the campus takenote that recycling of mixed paper, beverage containers, and compost-ing of biodegradable to-go contain-ers in available in the residencehalls. Check with facilities managersor Residential Sustainability Educa-tion Coordinators for locations ineach unit. Paper recycling is alsoavailable in all offices and many labsin blue desk-side bins. UC Berke ley i s a Coo l Schoo lLets kick off the year withsome bright green acco-lades for UC Berkeley. Weplaced 8 th as a Sierra ClubCool School and madePrinceton Reviews Green

Honor Roll as one of 15colleges that received the

    highest Green Rating Score.

The Sierra Club magazine, Sierra, evaluated 135 universities nationwide to find the most Eco-Enlightened U.S. Universities. Instead of focus-ing on a specific issue such as energy conserva-tion, Sierra conducted an overview of each cam-puss sustainability efforts. The report card cov-ered 8 categories: efficiency, energy, food, aca-

demics, purchasing, transportation, waste man-agement, and administration.

Our highest performances were in efficiency, food, and transportation. Here are some snap-shots on campus achievement in these catego-ries:

Converted an estimated 75% of campusincandescent lights to compact fluorescentlamps and added efficient fluorescent fix-tures.

Sustainably purchased an estimated 24% of all Cal Dining food and beverage for 2008-2009 academic year.

Reduced gasoline and diesel used in fleetvehicles and commutes by 20% since 1990.Fleet improvements and fewer single-drivercommuting yielded the achievement.

We also preformed well on the Princeton Review sgreen rating system that assessed 697 college s onenvironmental practices, policies, and courseofferings.

A Princeton Review survey indicates that two-thirdsof university applicants say that a schools envi-ronmental report card influences their enroll-ment. With thousands of new students joining UCBerkeley this Fall, our green record may haveplayed some role in their choice.

New Requi rements fo r Green Cer t i f i ca t ionThe Green Department and Green Event

certifications are popular tools for the cam-

pus to reduce its environmental footprint. In

6 months, weve certified four Green De -

partment s and over a dozen Green Event s.

Weve made some changes, though, to the criteria

for certification starting October 1, 2009. There

are new points and prerequisites, as well as new

requirements for the number of points needed for

    certification.

As always, departments are encouraged to

contact the Office of Sustainability as they

begin the certification process and to consult

the Resource Guide for more information on

the program. Click here for more information
