BBC Learning
BBC Learning is now part of a new division:
Radio and Education Director, James Purnell
The division brings together Arts, Music
and Network Radio with BBC Learning
and BBC Children's departments.
2. BBC & Charter update
Education remains at the heart of the BBC’s Mission
for the next Charter and is one of the BBC’s public
purposes:
“To support learning for people of all ages: The BBC should help everyone learn about different subjects in ways they will find accessible, engaging, inspiring
and challenging. The BBC should provide specialist educational content to help support learning for children and teenagers across the United Kingdom. It should encourage people to explore new subjects
and participate in new activities through partnerships with educational, sporting and cultural institutions.” (Draft BBC Charter, Sep 2016)

2. BBC & Charter update
In our vision for the new Charter, there is a renewed drive to
put education at the heart of what the BBC does. The aim is
to reinvigorate the BBC’s mission on education through a
new education strategy for BBC Children and BBC Learning.
There are a number of specific initiatives highlighted:
• Working in partnership to create an “Ideas Service” to
provide the public with the best of British ideas and
culture.
• A single front-door for children to the wealth of the whole
BBC and trusted partners beyond – BBC iPlay.
• A commitment to improve services in the Nations,
including through Bitesize.
• An aspiration for a more open BBC working with the
widest range of partners – including in the area of
education.

Live Lessons and Teach
BBC Bitesize supports students with their studies outside the classroom, at home and on the go.
It directly relates to the curriculum, supporting
learners from reception through to taking school-leaving exams.
Students can find material to support their studies wherever they are in the UK.

BBC Teach
BBC Teach aims to support teachers by curating the best of BBC videos, BBC archive and other
curriculum-related resources for use in the
classroom.
BBC Teach has a dedicated teaching resource
site hosted on YouTube, which is updated daily
and contains around a thousand carefully
selected clips, covering subjects at early years, primary and secondary level and across all
national curricula.

External Linking Current external linking approach from Bitesize
Our existing external linking policy has been in place since
2013. It provides contextual links from BBC Bitesize to other
providers of curriculum relevant content, alongside editorially
chosen links.
We link to over 25 different organisations through this scheme,
providing in excess of 10,000 individual links from Bitesize
pages.
This provides an audience benefit as they can move from
Bitesize to other high quality content. It provides a benefit for
external partners through traffic and increased SEO.
The process for applying is outlined at
www.bbc.co.uk/learningoverview

External Linking Next steps for external linking
Based on discussion with industry stakeholders, we have highlighted the following next steps for external linking.
External linking from the app. It is not possible to replicate the Bitesize
desktop external linking approach on the app. However, our plan is to add a top-level menu link from the app to a browser page of external education providers. BBC Teach external providers page. That link would land at a Teach
‘directory’ page. This external providers page would also be promoted on BBC Teach separately, and it enables us to broaden the approach to non-contextual providers and to apps.
External linking from major campaigns. We will broaden the external linking policy to incorporate the BBC Science campaign.

universities, to inspire 9-11 primary school pupils
and teachers through exciting, innovative and
accessible mass-participation scientific
investigations.
With the focus on scientific enquiry, pupils will
analyse data from their own investigations, but
also build up a national picture by uploading
results on an amazing, engaging interactive map of the UK.

BBC Comedy Classroom was a UK-wide campaign to promote literacy skills by encouraging 13-15 year olds to write, direct
and perform their own comedy material.
CBBC Awesome Authors Live inspired and excited 6-12 year olds to share and read the books they love, through a two day
