We could not do it without you.Dear Friends,

Before our students, before our campus, and even before the State of Maine, there was a dream for something better – and a gift given to create it. This gift is the foundation of Bridgton Academy. With a two hundred-seven-year history, your Academy has witnessed many changes. Our beginnings were humble: in 1806, three of the 646 settlers living in the town of Bridgton pledged personal donations of $500 each for the creation of a secondary school. After two years of petitioning the General Court of Massachusetts, the Academy was offi cially incorporated in March of 1808 (see below). Had it not been for that initial philanthropic support from townspeople, you would likely not be reading this letter today.

Philanthropy is interwoven within the history of this Academy. As a supporter of Bridgton today, you are a champion of our mission and a steward of our history. We rely on you, believe in you, and appreciate you for all that you make possible.

This 2014 Annual Report on Giving is in recognition of the dreams that you make a reality. Each photo in this report refl ects a young man who was impacted by your generosity. This young man is now in a better position to pursue his own path and is working to become a leader of tomorrow. Our 2014 Annual Report on Giving also features stories of those who, like you, give back to Bridgton Academy. Their stories are diverse and intriguing, inspiring and motivational, and we are proud to share them.

In terms of sheer numbers, the Academy’s family of donors may be perceived by others as modest. We aren’t a national nonprofi t raising millions of dollars monthly; we aren’t a higher education advancement offi ce with hundreds of staff working on billion dollar campaigns. Our team of four staff members cares greatly about our work. Our larger community of faculty and staff cares greatly about you and the impact you have. Through our Annual Report on Giving and our work together, we hope to continue to inspire you by sharing the message of the tangible, immediate, and amazing impact that you have as a champion of BA.

Thank you for all that you do for Bridgton Academy, for serving as a philanthropic hero for our historic institution, and for making “The Year That Makes The Difference” possible. We could not do it without you.

The ScienceofLegacya

It is our great honor and privilege to announce that Mr. Robert Anderson, ‘48, has, through a legacy bequest, chosen to establish an endowment at our historic Academy to bene t the sciences. Robert

(Bob) recalled his time at Bridgton Academy as “one of my favorite experiences in life,” and graciously shared his journey with us – from his decision to attend Bridgton – to his generous and heartfelt determination to provide our distinguished school with this great legacy.

Born in Waterville, Maine, and describing himself as a “preoccupied” student while attending high school in Portland, Bob elected to attend Bridgton Academy in an e ort to strengthen his academics. Like many alumni before him, and generations of alumni since, Bob made a lot of friends during his year at Bridgton. Active in campus life, Bob “went out for the teams” and played football for the Black and Grey. Bob was also Co-Editor in Chief of Bridgton Academy’s yearbook, e Stranger, and has fond memories

of working with his Co-Editor, Merle (Deering) Castle. He also participated in the Glee Club. Recalling the sense of community that is still synonymous with our Academy, Bob shared how Headmaster and Principal Richard Goldsmith – who had just purchased a brand new vehicle only two weeks prior – o ered Bob his keys to go visit his ailing mother in Portland. He recounted how Herb Cochran, who served in the combined role of Housemaster, Football Coach and Science Teacher, also found time to work with the students on e Stranger and take them camping. And, as do so many of our alumni, Bob summed up his memories of BA, stating simply: “the whole year was great!”

“ e Year at Makes e Di erence” opened up the opportunity for Bob to gain acceptance to the University of Maine, where he earned a degree in Zoology. Like many of his contemporaries, Bob went on to honorably serve his country. Upon completing his service with the U.S. Armed Forces, Bob taught high school Biology classes for more than twenty years.

Bob’s long-held interest in medicine later prompted him to become a Physician’s Assistant (P.A.). It was during his time as a P.A. that Bob made the acquaintance of Dr. Richard Ames, M.D., who later became his life partner. Bob and Dr. Ames shared the common goal of wanting to return something to the people of their community, as well as the institutions which contributed to the success they each achieved in their professional lives. is philanthropic spirit, coupled with Bob’s fond memories of Bridgton, led to the sel ess decision of Bob and Dr. Ames to choose Bridgton Academy as a bene ciary of their estate.

A strong believer of applied learning in the sciences, Bob is particularly interested in his endowment supporting lab work and hands-on learning programs for BA students. As Bridgton Academy works to further enhance our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs for the 21st century, we feel that a hands-on experience is one of the cornerstones of our teaching and learning. e Academy is truly grateful for Bob’s shared belief that learning is an experience – both inside and outside of the classroom.

Thank you, Bob, for believing in our esteemed Academy and for establishing a gift that will help countless young men learn all of the amazing aspects present in the scientific world that is all around them.

We are truly honored by those who choose to incorporate Bridgton Academy into their estate plans; creating a lasting legacy into perpetuity. Generations of BA alumni, parents, and friends have helped to continue the mission and values which defi ne Bridgton Academy through their planned giving designs. Planned gifts may allow you to make a larger gift to the Academy than you thought possible, often deferring signifi cant tax benefi ts to donors. To learn more about planned legacy gifts at the Academy, we invite you to contact Jessica Priola, Director of Alumni and Development at Bridgton Academy.

Why do you give back to BA?BA encouraged both my academic and athletic achievements and I am extremely grateful for this. Among the many reasons I choose to give back to BA are because I want to assist in providing scholarships and nancial aid to new students, as well as help attract and retain talented faculty. It is very important to me to support the initiatives and culture of BA and, by giving back, I know that I am doing my part to ensure others can be a orded similar opportunities as myself.

Why would you encourage others to give back to BA?By giving back, you are keeping BA relevant and focused and also ensuring that you remain connected to both the BA community and the institution as a whole. As alumni, we should feel proud to support current

students, faculty, and coaches if we truly want the culture and structure of BA to last. We should be willing to give back nancially, as well as with our time and talents.

Using no more than six to eight words, write a sentence that summarizes BA for you.Teach, lead, serve, compete, learn, achieve.

Gerrit Conover ‘05

In the following pages we’ll be introducing you to just a few of our donors as they share their story of what Bridgton Academy means to them, and why they give back.

Rachel Rice Deans ‘39Why do you give back to BA?Simply put: Because BA has given so much to me. It has been seventy- ve years since I graduated from BA and I am still reaping the bene ts of the Academy in my life every day. ere are many things which cannot be taught out of a book that are critical to a person’s success in life in “the real world”. BA nurtured encouragement and self-esteem, and the day-to-day camaraderie nurtured me both morally and spiritually. We learned so much about daily living and getting along with others. e whole concept of the school is unique, especially in those days. We were treated as people and we were taught respect. In turn, our opinions were valued and respected and age did not matter. We were taught to believe in ourselves, which is imperative in meeting life’s challenges. For a number of years in my younger days, times were pretty lean. I had ve children and was holding down a job as a nurse – I certainly had my fair share of struggles, to say the least. I never worried too much, though. I had been taught to believe in myself and I did believe in myself. I had grown into a young woman with con dence and a strong sense of self-worth. I knew how to position myself in my daily encounters to achieve success each day. ese skills have kept me going and made me into the woman I have become – and all of these skills I learned at Bridgton Academy. I have a great admiration for this institution and I can’t help but want to give so that others can have the same opportunities that I did. I am just so happy that BA is still around and people can still bene t from all it has to o er.

Why would you encourage others to give back to BA?So that future generations can reap the bene ts of the opportunities we had when we attended. Certainly BA is progressing and keeping up with modern-day standards, which is wonderful. e evolution of BA is key to ensuring that the Academy can continue to ful ll its tradition of properly educating the youth of today to be the leaders of tomorrow. ere is a ripple e ect to the value of BA in our society. If everyone who has ever bene tted from BA, whether as a student, a parent, a mentor to a student, a friend to a student, etc. just gave a little bit, consistently, in appreciation for all that BA does, we can be assured that BA will be able to continue to evolve and uphold its historic tradition. I know I am a better person for having been there and it would give me great comfort to know that the younger generations who will impact our world will have BA’s values instilled in them.

Using no more than six to eight words, write a sentence that summarizes BA for you. e best education I could ask for.

Giving by Parents of Alumni

Congratulations to the Class of 2014! is past spring, the Class of 2014 was presented with a philanthropic challenge. Mrs. Mary Ames, parent of Christopher ‘10 and current trustee, spoke with students in Chapel last April about the importance of giving back. For many students about to enter their freshman year of college, the thought of paying for tuition and being philanthropic at the same time didn’t quite equate. Mrs. Ames encouraged the assembled class to understand that giving isn’t about making gigantic donations, but simply about the fact that they get into the habit of thinking of others.

Members of the Class of 2014 were asked to consider a $25 Bridgton Fund donation. Five dollars of this donation would be paid to the Academy each year, allowing those that participated to be recognized on an annual basis, while helping to support future BA students. As an incentive to the Class of 2014, Mrs. Ames set forth a challenge to match each one of their $25 gifts.

As a result of this campaign, twenty students from the BA Class of 2014 each gave $25 to the Bridgton Fund, earning them the top participation spot out of all graduating classes for the 2014 scal year.

We are honored to announce that Mrs. Ames has generously o ered to extend the “Five-Year Challenge” to our Academy’s future alumni brothers, the BA Class of 2015. As with their predecessors, students will be called upon to consider giving back to their Academy by o ering a gift of $25.

e BA Class of 2015 is in a unique position to claim the top spot in giving participation and we hope that they will rise to the challenge.

A special thank you to Mrs. Ames for her generous pledge to the students and for her continued and unwavering support of Bridgton Academy. A heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2014 for setting a ne example for all Academy classes!

A special recognition society for parents of alumni or current students who have given $1,808 and above during the fi scal year.

Roger Austin ‘86Why do you give back to BA?I give back to BA because I truly believe in their mission to impact the future of young men’s lives and I am living proof that Bridgton can – and does – successfully ful ll this mission. Twenty-eight years later, I am still applying the lessons I learned during my year at Bridgton. “The Year That Makes The Difference” provided me with the tools I needed to be successful in college and beyond. My success is owed, in great part, to BA, and I will always be grateful for my year there.

Why would you encourage others to give back to BA?When alumni give back to BA, we are doing our part to ensure that other young men have the same opportunities we were given during our year at Bridgton. e main reason I am able to nancially support BA is because of the year I spent at BA, as it propelled me toward a better future.

Chief James Heinz P’14Why do you give back to BA?My answer is simple. I give back to BA because of what BA gave to my son, Je , who just graduated from Bridgton this past May. Je ’s already good GPA got even better while he studied at Bridgton (from 3.5 to 3.92). At the time of his high school graduation, my son had had zero baseball recruitment o ers. For a young man passionate about baseball, this came as a tough challenge. is changed for him after a year at Bridgton. Attending BA started as a baseball decision, but ended up bene tting academics and so much more.

Why would you encourage others to give back to BA?I am a “pay it forward” person. When we can educate our young, it will make the future better for all of us. By giving back to BA, we are reminding both ourselves, and the Academy, that we are committed to shaping a better tomorrow.

Sally HapennyBridgton Academy Faculty 1965 – 2002Why do you give back to BA?When you believe in a school, it is important to show your gratitude by giving back some of what was given to you. BA, and the students who have passed through our Academy, brought me so much joy during my tenure. Perhaps the question should be: “How could I not want to give back?”

I truly believe in BA and all that it is not only capable of doing, but how it successfully carries out its mission year after year. e reasons I believe in Bridgton Academy are innumerable, and the list of reasons grew with each year that I was privileged enough to work there. When students arrive for registration (i.e. “move-in day”), they are apprehensive. Eight months later, the transformation is almost unbelievable. I say “almost” because this transformation is truly remarkable, in every sense of the word, and I can vouch for this transformation rst-hand.

ese young men have gained a con dence, both personally and academically, that is so critical in ensuring their success after they graduate from Bridgton. I also might add that the number of Bridgton Academy alumni who graduate from college is signi cantly higher than that of the national average. While athletics play a major component in the program at Bridgton, academics have always come rst, which is essential. ese young men need that boost in academic con dence if they are to pursue their athletic passions at the collegiate level. By the time they leave BA, they have found that con dence and they know, within themselves, that they are ready for college.

Why would you encourage others to give back to BA?As a tuition-driven school whose endowment is not large, it is vital that anyone who has been a part of it contributes. BA must constantly improve its campus facilities to remain competitive.

Using no more than six to eight words, write a sentence that summarizes BA for you.A unique school instilling con dence and maturity.

Why do you give back to BA?I give back to BA because of the faculty. e current and past faculty [e.g., Tom Austin, Peter Gately, Chuck Hamaty, Joe Daley, Gordon Weeks, Mrs. Hapenney, Martha Flint (the late post-mistress of North Bridgton)] and so many others gave – and continue to give – so much of themselves and their energy to the students. is also includes reaching out to alumni, be it through phone calls, trips to Boston, and so forth. e past and present faculty members genuinely care so much for BA. By continuing to reach out to alumni, we always feel connected to the Bridgton Academy “family”.

Whenever I traveled to the campus in North Bridgton for a reunion weekend (I recently had my thirtieth!), it was evident that the faculty went out of their way to make me feel important and recognized me as a member of the family. Unlike the rest of the world, where life moves on and relationships dissipate, the faculty of Bridgton Academy always let me know that I was not forgotten and that I would always be part of Bridgton Academy forever. at is why I contribute to BA.

Why would you encourage others to give back to BA?I would encourage others to contribute to BA so that the school can continue to evolve and buy the best technology and

learning resources available for its students, which is important in making certain that students can succeed in college and beyond. Such success ensures that future alumni will have the tools necessary to become prosperous nancially and nd happiness with the career opportunities that Bridgton Academy, and their colleges and graduate schools, have a orded them. Bridgton o ers admission to young men who may not have achieved all they could in high school, but have lots of growth potential. Bridgton puts them in an environment away from the disctractions of home, and challenges each student to reach for success outside of his comfort zone. Students are challenged to succeed at the highest level academically, athletically, and as both individuals and team members. Helping in this growth is incredibly rewarding for all of us who give back.

Using no more than six to eight words, write a sentence that summarizes BA for you.I will give you seven reasons: accountability, hope-giving, intentionally focused, tenacity, maturity, courage, and lifelong knowledge seeking ( is is my favorite gift from Bridgton…I love and live to pursue lifelong learning in all areas physically, spiritually and academically; a pursuit I can thank the Academy for instilling in me).

Why do you give back to BA?BA is absolutely unique as it is the ONLY school in the US (maybe the world) that o ers a  homogeneous  group of post-graduate (PG) boys a single PG year to develop.   ere are no underclassmen to detract from the faculties’ or students’ focus and, frankly, no girls to distract from their academic pursuits.

e Headmaster and ALL of the sta are in-sync and completely committed to the success and growth of each and every boy. You can feel it the moment you step on the campus. It’s a very, very gratifying feeling for a parent.

We’ve sent three sons through BA. It’s not a magic pill and not every one of our sons bene ted the same or as much as the other. at being said, BA provided them all with a strong atmosphere in which to grow up, and understand that they are soon fully responsible for their own life paths and decisions. BA gives them the opportunity to grab the reins of their lives. e very idea that it’s a lighthearted stroll through another year of high school or freshman year of college leaves them the moment parents leave the campus.

Why would you encourage others to give back to BA?One of my good friends mentioned to me that he decided to divert his Boston College contributions to BA because the impact was felt so much more.... It feels wonderful to be a real part of something with such history and devotion. And now you are a part of its future. Unlike gifts to larger institutions, your support literally transforms BA.

Fiscal Year 2014 Endowment Growth by Fund

2014 Annual Report on Giving17

I. Meet the Bridgton Fund – Who are you, and what do you do?

Believe it or not, I am over one-hundred years old! Last year I even got a new name – the Bridgton Fund. I provide funds to help bene t the overall operating costs of BA. I help to cover all those expenses that tuition alone can’t handle. Your gift provides for the everyday necessities of running your Academy – from nancial aid to energy, eld trips, food, and far beyond. You may not realize how important you are, but everybody who supports my fund is pretty much a superhero for BA.

Many of you provide unrestricted donations, but some also restrict their gift to a project or program that’s special to them. Gift in kind donations of tangible property also help me to succeed.

is year, the Academy has told me I need to grow to $500,000. I’m excited for the challenge, but know it’s going to be a lot of work as well. We also hope to have over 1,000 donors give a gift in support of my fund – I’d be proud to have so many friends!

II. Meet Capital Projects – Who are you, and what do you do?

When you think of me, think of the big ticket items that the school needs to ensure its future success. I make big changes and help the school stay competitive, boost enrollment, and make a big splash. Frankly, you know it when I walk in the room. I am above and beyond everyday operating needs, but I know that everyone plays a role and we are all equally important.

Right now, the Academy is focused on my fund to raise $6 million dollars for the “Rise, Sons of Bridgton” Capital Campaign. Trust me when I say that this campaign is going to change BA. My fund transforms things. is spring, my fund will be used through the success of “Rise, Sons of

Bridgton” to install a new arti cial turf multi-purpose eld (see facing page). While I do create big change, I also need the help of others to make the Academy’s dreams a reality. In other words, I can’t do it without you.

In addition to campaigns, I also cover improvements and enhancements that are long-lasting and carry a large price tag. For example, this year, donors have proposed new projects and challenge gifts that my fund will pay for. ese include beautifying campus and repairing the Outing Club cabin, just to name a few.

III. Meet the Endowment – Who are you, and what do you do?

I am the Academy’s long-range investment plan—and the grandfather of all fundraising at Bridgton. I have been in existence for decades, and the older I get, the stronger I grow. Caring individuals help build my foundation by creating funds which perpetually honor an Academy program, building, or memory that they hold dear. e largest gift in Academy history, over $1 million dollars, was given to my fund from Mr. Waldron Fernald, BA Class of 1923. e Fernald Bequest has helped decades of students receive the nancial aid they need to enroll at BA.

I am currently worth just over $5.4 million dollars, but need to continue to grow in order to ensure the Academy’s future strength. Between us, in comparison with other independent schools, I am very modest in size.

at being said, improving markets help me grow a little every day, and Academy stewards are always looking out for my best interests.

Each year, Academy trustees utilize a small piece of the funds I earn to help operate the school. I am composed of both unrestricted and restricted funds. I am a wonderful way to create a perpetual gift for the Academy; honoring the donor’s intention for all time. For the long-range gift planner, I am the fund to consider. While I may not have the immediacy of the Bridgton Fund, or the ashiness of capital campaigns, I am the constant in ever-shifting tides and the pillar upon which this Academy is built.

In the spring of 2014, Bridgton Academy launched our “Rise, Sons of Bridgton” Capital Campaign (RSB). This $6 million comprehensive campaign is focused on the full revitalization and modernization of all Academy athletic facilities, including the construction of a new 16,000-square foot Strength & Fitness Center. This project-based campaign will have a transformational impact on our Academy’s facilities and programming, enabling our historic school to stay competitive and current in the 21st century educational marketplace. Most importantly, this campaign will allow us to provide the best teaching environment possible for our student-athletes.

Thanks to the amazing philanthropic support of Academy alumni, parents, and friends, BA is poised

to break ground on the fi rst projects of our campaign: the construction of a 90,000-square foot multi-purpose fi eld and new turf baseball infi eld! This spring, Bridgton Academy will install our fi rst-ever artifi cial turf facility for lacrosse and football, as well as create a turf infi eld for our baseball team. These exciting installations will be complete and ready for the incoming Class of 2016; having an immediate and signifi cant impact on our student experience.

Thank you to all of those who have helped to make these fi rst projects a reality. Your support remains the catalyst for our success. To learn more about “Rise, Sons of Bridgton” please contact Jessica Priola, Director of Alumni & Development at (207) 647-3322, x1219 or email [email protected].
