HARVEST...continued from cover

With The Black Bear Café generously allowing their centralized location to be used as a distribution point, bi-weekly distribution will continue as long as food is available to be distributed. Any remaining food is then given to the food bank. They are also looking to setup delivery systems for those isolating or unable to travel. Members of the St. Joseph Island Lions Club have stepped up already to offer this service when possible.

The service will continue as long as donations are made.

We are Taking a Vacation!

187 weeks – That is how long we have been doing the Island Clippings, and every single one of those weeks an issue has been delivered to your mailbox. We were originally planning on taking this week as our first week off in over 3 and a half years to celebrate Andrew’s Grandma’s 90th birthday. While we are no longer able to celebrate that with her, we are still taking a week off.

Yes, like every other business during this pandemic we have seen changes and we are currently taking things week by week. One option, which is being strongly considered, is to publish every other week for the time being.

With no events for the foreseeable future, both to be advertised and to written about, that makes each issue a challenge. While there are still limited opportunities to go out and find stories, we have actively chosen to stay home whenever possible to limit risk to ourselves and to our community.

For advertisers who have prepaid ads, your ads will continue by issue number and are not tied to dates.

For readers, you are welcome to submit stories and announcements and other tidbits. For those looking for a means to advertise their products and services, we believe our format is still a very effective means of getting your name out to the entire St. Joseph Island population. We are still receiving positive feedback from advertisers.

Rescue At Twin Lakes submitted by Bob Tisdall

Two young brothers are happy to be back on dry land after a harrowing experience Sunday on the icy waters of Twin Lakes on St. Joseph Island.

The two, aged 12 and 8, set out mid-morning Sunday to kayak along the calm shoreline of the opening waters of the lake. Out in the centre, covering much of the lake, two split ice pans left a tempting channel of open water across the lake to the other side. Had the winds remained calm the pair probably would have made it through to the other side, but the increasing northwest winds closed the channel trapping them in the ice field about three quarters of the way to the other side.

Thanks to the speedy efforts of the Rescue Teams of St. Joseph Island, along with several hundred feet of rope, the pair were safely pulled ashore shortly after noon.

The boys were spending the weekend with their parents and grandparensat the cottage on the lake.

Bob tells us “there had to be at least 20 well trained members of the rescue team. They used our shoreline to launch their “boat” and then pull everyone back to shore”. He adds “Great that we have all equipment

Lions on a Mission to Serve - and invite donations to the St. Joseph Island and Area Food Bank

The St. Joseph Island Lions Club had a member drop in to the Fellowship Hall at Harmony St. Mark Church in Rich-ards Landing to deliver a $600 donation to the St. Joseph Island and Area Food Bank. Due to COVID-19, the precautions limited the number of persons in the hall to practice social distancing and pro-vided hand sanitizer for clients, organizers, volunteers and those dropping off donations. The Rev. Adrian Collins, Committee Chair wants to ensure that everyone is aware that the Food Bank is open and operational for both those in need of the service and for individuals or groups wanting to make donations. This community support is greatly needed and appreciated. The Food Bank is located at the Fellowship Hall at Harmony St. Mark Church in Richards Landing and is open every Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Over the years, the SJI Lions Club has supported the St. Joseph Island and Area Food Bank with monetary and non-perishable donations and turkeys at Christmas as well as pancakes and sausages from their monthly breakfasts. Lions motto is “we serve”. It’s that simple and has been since Lions began in 1917. The Lions Clubs are places where individuals join together to give their valuable time and efforts to improving their Communities and the World. Message from the Township of St. Joseph – Don’t Get Com-placent, We are Here to Help

After weeks of isolation and physical distancing, there are encouraging signs that Ontario might avoid a spike in COVID-19 cases that would overwhelm our healthcare sys-tem. In addition to our residents taking personal respon-sibility by doing what they should to avoid spreading the virus, we have benefitted from being in a rural area with a relatively sparse population that is some distance from large centres.

There is a concern, however, that we will see this as reason to relax our approach toward continued isolation and phys-ical distancing. After all, we are not aware of any cases on the Island, and at this point, Algoma’s cases seem man-ageable – most of us do not know anyone in our immediate area who has gotten COVID-19, let alone anyone who has died from it. In addition, with the weather becoming more spring-like every day, we want to get out and enjoy it with others. Because of these factors, we run the risk of becom-ing complacent and letting our guard down.

We are being told that we have been doing a good job, pro-jections are that numbers will start to go down – and more than that, we want things to go back to “normal”. We want to go out without worrying, we want to get together with friends and family. We can’t though. Other countries that have made early attempts to return to the way they did things before have seen a resurgence of cases and deaths. We have to keep working at this every day and reminding ourselves that the more we clamp down now, the more like-ly it is that we can return to some sense of normalcy earlier than if we don’t.

Algoma’s eleventh case, located in the “Sault and area” (Sault to Laird) seems to have been contracted through “community spread”, meaning they were infected here. This is further evidence that we are not out of the woods yet and there is reason to continue following the advice of medical experts. It is difficult, but we have to keep work-ing at this for a while longer.

Luckily, we live in an age where we have a lot of choices for entertainment and education at home. Luckily, we live in an area that is beautiful and there are plenty of ways to enjoy it while being able to avoid other people. Luckily many of us have yards that we can enjoy, or workshops to putter around in. Luckily, we have a community of people who care about each other, and businesses and services here that will assist us. All of this helps us to continue to make the choices we need to make every day to keep this virus out of our community.

Keep checking on your friends, family and neighbours – complain to each other, commiserate with each other – but continue to encourage and support each other. Reach out when you need help or need someone to talk to. Only go out for essentials, and when you do go to a store, be efficient about it. Remember that getting exercise and fresh air is essential, so go for a walk but respect physical

distancing of at least two meters. Try not to touch your face when you are out and wash your hands regularly. If you have a mask, wear it.
