The meeting was opened by Pat Brown, a resident of Hilton Township and the Lay Incumbent for the local Anglican Parish. He introduced Anglican Canon Bob Elkin and his wife Connie, who came from their home in Little Rapids to at- tend. They have considerable expertise in the subject, having helped to bring 27 Vietnamese refugee families to their then- home town of Thunder Bay several years ago. These ‘boat people’ as they were then known had survived horrendous risks and dangers in escaping from the blood- baths and purges that followed the communist takeover of South Vietnam. Their stories of escape by sea in barely-float- ing boats and rafts, suffering from starvation, storms and pi- rate attacks, sound very much like what we’re hearing about today as other people flee their homelands in order to simply survive and start a new life. The Island Clippings published Bob Elkin’s eloquent missive ‘Is There Room at the Inn’ in our December 3rd issue (#1020). Mr. Brown reported that Canon Elkin first planted the seed of the idea in a church sermon that got people thinking and talking … but nobody seemed to have a clear idea of what to do and how to do it. The first step eventually led to this night’s meeting. “The decision was that we’d call a public meeting and see if people showed up and if there was any in- terest in taking on a project like this.” he said. Their stories of escape by sea in barely-float-ing boats and rafts, suffering from starvation, storms and pi-rate attacks, sound very much like what we’re hearing abouttoday as other people flee their homelands in order to simplysurvive and start a new life.

The Island Clippings published Bob Elkin’s eloquent missive‘Is There Room at the Inn’ in our December 3rd issue(#1020).

Mr. Brown reported that Canon Elkin first planted the seed ofthe idea in a church sermon that got people thinking andtalking … but nobody seemed to have a clear idea of what todo and how to do it. The Answer is “YES!”

L to R: Connie & Bob Elkin, Pat Brown, Brad Mittleholtz and Helen Christensen

would need to know and how to make it all happen.

“And then I think we need to have a conversation, and decide‘is it feasible to bring a refugee family into a rural setting?’ Idon’t know!” Pat continued. “Most of what you hear on thenews is that people are being settled in Montreal, Toronto,Winnipeg, London, Kingston and places like that – largecities with lots of resources and lots of facilities – and we’reinterested to hear … do you think it’s feasible, is it reasonableto do, is there good reasons why we shouldn’t do it?”

Bob and Connie Elkin took the floor to walk the audiencethrough their own experience in bringing the Vietnamesefamilies to Thunder Bay which, when combined with PastorMittleholtz and Ms. Christensen’s input, gave the attendees apretty clear picture of the responsibilities, challenges and op-portunities that existed … as well as the rewards.

Canon Elkin also made it clear that “this is not a ‘church’thing! It is a ‘people wanting to help’ thing”. I want people toknow that … this is not done under the guise of religion oranything like that! This is just us – a group of people wantingto help people!”

Following up with a similar message was Pastor Brad and Ms.Christensen who spoke about their own group’s work. “Thisalso began through hearts that were tugged. Whether that’sthrough sermons or the media, well that’s just because we’rehuman … and we respond.” he said. “There was a conversa-tion after church one Sunday in which everyone agreed thatwe have to do something!” That led to a public meeting beingcalled, and the process took off from there.”

There are a number of government agencies, funding op-tions, policies and procedures in place for helping suchrefugees – mostly families – to relocate. There are also severalother ‘umbrella’ groups as well, run by churches or charities, who can help with the cause. The process can take weeks ormonths and in many cases, even when the family or familiesare relocated, the work of helping them to orient themselvesto our culture is just beginning.

Pastor Brad also clarified that “their” refugees are NOT partof the Syrian group that is presently arriving in Canada.

Those people are totally funded and provided for by the fed-eral government. It’s a sad fact of life that refugees are fleeingfrom war, famine, disease – any kind of social instability, from all over the world, not just from Syria and Iraq. “Therefugee crisis was not invented this year … but this is proba-bly the worst refugee crisis that the world has ever faced.” headded.

There are several ways and means for sponsoring refugees, whether a single individual or larger, extended families. Thelargest medium is referred to as a ‘Sponsorship AgreementHolder’ – a group or body that is working directly with thefederal government in a sponsorship agreement. Workingunder these groups’ umbrellas are ‘Constituent Groups.’ Inaddition, any group of as few as five people can establish aformal ‘Group of Five’ through which to enter into an agree-ment with the government to take on sponsorship of a fam-ily. There is also a ‘Community Sponsor’ status, which isusually a local body, organization or corporation that takeson sponsorship responsibility.

To help all of these groups, the federal government has devel-oped a ‘Blended Visa’ approach to how much or how long itwill contribute towards helping to fund a sponsorship. It hasalso created the Refugee Sponsorship Training Program (visitwww.RSTP.ca) which offers online training courses on whatto expect, the social hurdles that might exist and so forth. Italso helps with the initial information needs of the refugeesthey sponsor. If and when a local organization does getformed, it would have to be determined how best to structurethe group for optimum effectiveness.

That ‘if and when’ discussion could be coming very soon. Theevening’s presentations were followed by a period of ques-tions, comments and general discussion amongst the atten-dees. In addition to hearing a terrific exchange of great ideas,we noticed something else: the attendees, who were looselyspread out through the room at the beginning of the meet-ing, had moved in closer to one another, forming a tightergroup. When Pat Brown called for a show of hands on thequestion “how many are interested in proceeding further?”the vote appeared to be unanimous. The answer is ‘YES’!And we learned that at least one attendee has already got her

own ‘Group of Five’ started.

We’ll be hearing more about what that ‘next step’ might be,soon after the Christmas season.

Although most will agree that “religion” should not be a pri-mary factor in deciding for or against organizing a localrefugee sponsorship, we do feel that the last word of this arti-cle was actually spoken at the ¾ mark of the meeting by Pas-tor Brad Mittleholtz. To paraphrase his remark, when askedif ‘their’ refugees were predominantly Muslim or Christian,he replied “We’re not doing this because they might be Mus-lims or Christians. We’re doing this because WE are Chris-tians!”

Christmas

WHILE CHRISTMAS CAN BE THE BEST TIME of the yearwith festivities and celebrations at almost every turn, it canalso be the most difficult time of year. Just as good cheer canbe amplified throughout the holiday season, so can thoseemotions that are associated with pressure and adversity.Whether this is because of temporary problems or long-termstruggles, for many individuals Christmas can be a time ofyear that is endured more than celebrated.

Part of the reason for that is the timing of the holiday, withChristmas just a week from the New Year, is a natural timefor us to take stock of our situation. Individuals looking foremployment at this time of year will certainly feel the addi-tional pressure. Employment struggles are daunting at anytime, but the search for work over the holidays can be extratough as many workplaces reduce hours or even take timeoff. The knowledge that it just takes a bit of patience can ringhollow when forced to wait for something so important.

People struggling with money also feel pressure, and oftenthis travels hand in hand with employment challenges. Thetradition of gift giving can be a cash crunch for the best bud-geted among us. For those struggling with finances, it can bea hurdle that is difficult to overcome. Add to that the messag-

I have heard people bemoan the commercial-ization of Christmas my entire life, but wecan’t take in any form of media these dayswithout being bombarded with advertisingand popular culture messages that are de-signed to coerce our behaviour in a number ofways. While we can acknowledge the way thiscan be a burden on the cash-strapped, it canalso be a powerful reminder of how lonely aperson can be too.

We don’t have to look beyond the fairly uni-form representation of how we should cele-brate the holiday - with family and friends - tounderstand how many individuals can struggleat this time of year. Whether a person is de-pressed, perpetually lonely or simply distantfrom their friends and family, this season thatis supposed to be joyous can be anything but.

I am not trying to say that we have to changehow we celebrate Christmas or enjoy the holi-days, but I do think it is important to remem-ber those among us who are less fortunate.Much of what I have written about can be im-
