ii Long Span Bridges and Roofs – Development, Design and Implementation

Preface

The Indian National Group of the IABSE is organizing the 36th IABSE Symposium on Long Span Bridges

& Roofs – Development, Design and Implementation in Kolkata from September 24 to 27, 2013.

India is a vast land and is magnificently and enchantingly diverse. The Indian National Group takes pride in

bringing this event to Kolkata, the first time an IABSE event of this scale is being hosted outside Delhi.

There will be newness to the time spent among the most hospitable people of Kolkata. The city has laid out a

Red Carpet for the distinguished delegates and the accompanying persons.

The Symposium carries two foci: one is on large column-free enclosed or covered spaces like convention

centers, aircraft hangers and other transport terminals, industrial structures, sports stadium and others. The

other focus is on long span bridges, both road and rail, across rivers, sea links, long viaducts crossing deep

gorges, and flyovers in urban areas. A 22 member Scientific Committee comprising experts from all over the

world have worked hard to make the event technically interesting, accommodating various formats,

discussing projects and research that are at the cutting edge of current understanding and technologies.

The fare on offer, even while being localized, is rich in variety. Besides the deep intellectual discussions at

the Symposium itself, the socio-cultural feast, be it museums, the National Library, historical and religious

places, botanical and zoological gardens, river cruise, markets and shopping, street food, a casual stroll along

the river side promenade, and so on, all within the metropolitan area or just outside are a treat to the eyes.

Going beyond, are some of the best tourist attractions, including the Himalayan foothills in the north, the

Queen of Hill Stations Darjeeling, the place noted for the GA brand – Darjeeling Tea, the river delta

wetlands Sunderbans in the south and other attractions across the state of West Bengal.

The programme includes plenary sessions, one each on Long Span Bridges and Long Span Roofs,

highlighting the developments from around the globe. The technical sessions, include technical papers on the

various sub-themes, such as planning, development, design, operation and maintenance. The Young

Engineers Programme (YEP) which is a regular fixture in IABSE events is also included. In addition, three

special sessions, on Poverty Alleviation, Disaster Management, as follow-ups to the discussions at Delhi in

2005 and Special Session on Urban Transit and Metro mainly the Indian urbanization efforts in the recent

years. The programme also includes a poster session.

The commercial exhibition enables many companies to avail tremendous opportunities for exploring

business prospects and deals. A technical tour to the under execution Kolkata East-West Metro, going under

the river bed and crossing River Hooghly is also on the cards.

The Organizing Committee spared no pains to ensure the best available for all. A number of cultural

evenings gave fascinating glimpse of the rich Indian heritage.

Many contributions have been made from all over the world; a total of 270 abstracts were received, and 175

papers from 35 countries were submitted, in which 108 oral presentations and 30 poster presentations were

accepted. Furthermore, eight well known experts were invited as keynote lecturers to present new

developments and outcomes according to the topics of the Symposium. The present Symposium report

includes full papers for the keynote and the special sessions, and the short versions of the other accepted

papers. The full and short versions of all papers are available on the Symposium CD-ROM. We thank all

authors for their efforts to achieve contributions of a high quality level.
