Bio-based economy in a few words
“Food, feed, fuel,
materials and
products, all made
from biomass and
waste.”
4 4
The Biobased economy today
• A reality TODAY in paper
• …but cross-sectoral in its INFANCY
• … with the POTENTIAL to tackle socio-
economic and environmental
challenges. The sustainable alternative!
• To UNLOCK this potential:
• Bring all actors / sectors together to
build the biobased “sector”
• Invest in R&D and deployment and
make sure we do so in a
sustainable manner
• Create a favourable and
conducive policy environment

Our shared Vision
An economy that:
• sources domestic renewable raw materials
• produces food, feed, chemicals, materials and fuels locally
• creates jobs in a broad range of sectors in Europe, triggering
rural growth across regions
• places sustainable, smart and efficient use of resources at the
heart of industrial, business and social activities
• leads to sustainability in both economic AND ecologic terms.
6
Place in the value chain
Pulp and paper producers are reliant on
wood as feedstock
• Pulp and paper products are fabricated
from sustainably managed forests
• Paper/pulp is made from a renewable
resource, is biodegradable and easily
recycled
• A large portion of the energy used in the
manufacturing of pulp and paper is
renewable
• Pulp products are viable natural
alternatives to petroleum-based products
• Pulp mills always have been
biorefineries, since centuries..

Why European Cooperation?
• Biobased value chains are
transboundary
• Access to international knowledge,
technologies and markets
• Increase deployment
• Substantial R&D-projects required
• And to secure the competitive
position of the dutch industry

BRIDGE – Biobased and Renewable Industries for Development and Growth in Europe
Realising the biobased economy potential in
Europe
A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP ON BIOBASED INDUSTRIES
20 20
• Focus on pilots and demonstration/flagship plants to be in operation by 2020
INVESTMENT
• Build unconventional partnerships to foster radical innovation and improve the competitiveness of biobased products
INNOVATION
• Build value chains: 1) Sustainable feedstock supply, 2) Efficient processing in biorefineries and 3) Markets, products and policies
INTEGRATION
Scope and objectives
20-5-2013
11
21 21
Focus
• Build new interconnections between different sectors
• Build new biobased value chains (from feedstock to products)
• Establish new co-operations throughout industry clusters
• Develop innovative and sustainable biobased chemicals and
materials with locally sourced biomass and validated at
demonstration scale
• At least 5 flagships resulting from the PPP producing new biobased
materials, chemicals and fuels which have proven to become cost-
competitive to the alternatives based on fossil resources
22
Sappi key interest in BRIDGE PPP
• Wood availability
• Enhance profitability by using side streams and
utilization of by-products as new feedstock:
– Wood residues, bark
– Lignin compounds
– Sugar compounds
– Compounds in waste water
• Conversion to new products and development of
new markets:
– New building blocks for biobased polymers
– Fuels
– Biochemicals
– Etc.
• Developing of separation/extraction and
conversion techniques
•Lease the fibre and bring
back into the value-chain
