We have positioned fiscal 2014 as a year of Planned Change as we mark our 90th anniversary, achieving revival through transformation and innovation.

In fiscal 2013, orders received increased 6% year on year to ¥74.2 billion while net sales declined 3% to ¥69.8 billion. Although we posted a net loss of ¥1.9 billion, we generated operating income for the first time in four fiscal years, which came to ¥0.6 billion.

In the Third Medium-Term Management Plan, Komori set the revenue target of ¥120.0 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013. Net sales were far lower than targeted, however, as Komori was unable to adapt to drastic structural changes in the printing industry and a massive appreciation in the yen.

During the term, Komori lowered its break-even point and proactively worked to align its structure and staffing levels with its business scale to reinforce its foundations for future growth. Following up on a similar program in fiscal 2010, the Group solicited voluntary retirement for the second time, and transferred some of its workforce to new businesses. At the same time, with the goal of addressing foreign currency exchange risks and enhancing cost competitiveness, Komori increased its overseas procurement ratio and established a production subsidiary in China in June 2012. This subsidiary began operations in March 2013.

Our achievements during the last three years include development of the LITHRONE G40 and the introduction of new product lines in the package printing and gang run printing* markets. Komori also developed low-priced strategic models for Asian markets, such as the ENTHRONE 29 and the LITHRONE A37 and extended models equipped with H-UV, an innovative curing system that has garnered considerable market praise.

We also made steady progress in efforts to attain profitability with new businesses. We concluded a comprehensive technological cooperation agreement with the UK-based De La Rue International Limited, the world’s largest private securities printing firm, and have thus far supplied De La Rue with currency printing equipment for one printing line. We entered into a global sales alliance with Konica Minolta Business Technologies, Inc., and began marketing a high-end Print On Demand (POD) digital printing press employing an electrophotographic system supplied by Konica Minolta on an OEM basis. We also entered into a technological license agreement mainly on nanographic printing with the Landa Corporation, an Israel-based company, to prepare ourselves to commercialize an innovative digital printing press in the future. In the Printed Electronics (PE) business, which employs print technology to manufacture electronic circuits, we developed the PEPIO gravure offset printing presses—next-generation gravure offset systems for fine line printing in the touch panel market. Komori now has already begun sample shipments of these presses for many business entities and research institutes. We look forward to positive results in the near future.

The Fourth Medium-Term Management Plan is themed “Planned-Change”, representing our determination to fiercely pursue such change, which involves the reorganization of Group operations, and thereby returning the Group to a good financial standing. Under the new plan, Komori is working to secure a stable profit with new businesses while retaining the offset printing press business as its core. Komori will also advance its Print Engineering Service Provider (PESP) business by transforming our sales structure. To that end, we will broaden the scope of marketing away from printing presses toward businesses for related materials, consumables, equipment and systems. The sales and customer service section and the Komori Graphic Technology Center will work together to develop a solutions business, aimed at providing more convenience to customers. These initiatives will be the core of our sales activities.

At the same time, the Company will develop new products, including H-UV and other new printing technologies. We will commercialize printing systems for package printing and value-added printing applications. We will also commercialize digital printing presses and next-generation securities printing systems.

On the production front, we will pursue Monozukuri (Manufacturing) innovation activities, spearheaded by our Tsukuba Plant. To this end, we are implementing Monozukuri (Manufacturing) innovation activities as core initiatives to significantly shorten lead times, reduce costs, and control perceived quality. To reduce the need for indirect personnel, we will streamline operations by adopting information and communication technology (ICT) based operations companywide.

To govern initiatives as a whole and develop our businesses and foster a sound corporate culture, we are determined to pursue the Kando Project by rallying all Group members and distributors.

*Placing and print printing materials from different customers or contents onto a single sheet of paper. This approach lowers printing plate costs by simultaneously processing multiple orders for small jobs on the same sheet.

Opening the Digital Creative Lounge

30th Anniversary of Komori America Corporation

Komori set up the Digital Creative Lounge on the second floor of headquarters as a permanent vehicle to help customers build new business models and provide useful materials and equipment that increase production efficiency and cost competitiveness.

As a printing press manufacturer, Komori engages in the PESP business. Here, we aim to create new value-added products that accommodate change and provide comprehensive solutions by optimally combining years of printing technologies and the hardware and software of partners.

The Digital Creative Lounge houses an Impremia C70 full-color digital printing system, a cutting machine, and a laminator for printing demonstrations. We plan to present best printing practices and hold seminars at this venue. We will showcase prepress, output device, postpress, K-ColorSimulator, and K-Supply setups for processes and propose products. We hope that customers benefit from the Digital Creative Lounge.

Komori America Corporation, our first overseas subsidiary, celebrated its 30th anniversary in September 2012. On October 6, Komori America held a commemorative open-house event for 175 customers in the Rolling Meadows, Illinois.

Kazuyoshi “Kosh” Miyao, President and COO of Komori America Corporation, said that, “The event was a great kickoff for what we expected to be a great Graph Expo 2012. We invited everyone to visit our booth at that show and learn about Komori’s revolution to improve pressroom efficiency.”

The event included demonstrations of an eight-color LITHRONE G40P convertible perfecting offset printing press equipped with H-UV, a six-color LITHRONE GX40 offset printing press and the Impremia C80 digital printing system. Benny Landa, president of Landa Corporation, delivered a presentation on nanographic technology. There was also a demonstration of the Impremia IS29 digital ink jet printer, developed jointly with Konica Minolta.

After the event, all participants headed to Chicago for Graph Expo 2012, which started on October 7.

Komori garnered a solid reputation in printed electronics targeting the touch panel market at Touch Taiwan 2012

From August 29 to 31, 2012, Komori and distributor Schmidtek Ltd. exhibited at Touch Taiwan 2012, the International Touch Panel and Optical Film Exhibition 2012 at the Taipei World Trade Centre Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei.

Komori announced the PEPIO F20 and PEPIO R20 gravure offset presses for fine line printing for the touch panel industry.

A booth video detailing the operations of these presses was very well received by a huge crowd. After looking at printing samples, materials and panels, many visitors stayed to ask technical questions.

The Komori booth remained a hive of

activity during the exhibition, hosting more than 70 representatives from 27 touch panel manufacturers, mainly from Taiwan, and 160 visitors from 100 companies around the world, including Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China and the United States.

Some Japanese companies directed personnel from their Taiwanese subsidiaries or affiliates to visit the Komori booth. A significant number of touch panel manufacturers, makers of related materials, and university research institutions requested tests. The demand underscored high expectations for gravure offset presses in touch panel manufacturing.

»Profiles of Exhibits

Print Electronics ProductsKomori showcased its PEPIO R20 and PEPIO F20

gravure offset printing presses for fine-line printing at Printable Electronics 2013. This exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight was from January 30 through February 1, 2013.

We embarked on research into gravure offset printing several years ago. In 2011, we completed the PEPIO R20, a roll-to-roll gravure offset printing press for fine-line printing. Screen printing processes can generally create lines no thinner than 70 to 100 micrometers. The PEPIO R20 narrows line widths to just one-fifth of that. The R20 lines extend for 40 to 50 meters, requiring extensive plant space. We therefore worked on a sheet and roll-to-roll flatbed setup to replace screen printing, culminating in our completion of the PEPIO F20 flatbed gravure offset printing press in August 2012.

The prime current applications for the PEPIO R20 and PEPIO F20 are ultrafine-line printing of smartphone and other touch panel components. The ultrafine-line performance of these models offers tremendous potential, embodying the mechanical perfection, process efficiency, and device practicality for which Komori is renowned as a printing press manufacturer.

China Print 2013 Report A solid response to Komori in partnering customers to enhance their profits and productivity

●The five-day event attracted around 190,000 people

China Print 2013 (the 8th Beijing International Printing Technology Exhibition) was from Tuesday, May 14, to Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Beijing.

We set up a 900-square-meter booth under the theme of Komori OnDemand to showcase three offset printing presses and one print-on-demand digital printing system. The quadrennial exhibition attracted around 190,000 people. This tremendous turnout was more what one would expect for a full-scale trade show rather than a new product exhibition. Our booth was well received for highlighting our ability to help customers in boosting profits and productivity through our technologies and solutions.

●Komori OnDemand SolutionsThe KOMORI OnDemand concept integrates

OffsetOnDemand, a system that handles short runs and tight job turnaround schedules by cutting print preparation time, paper losses and the time needed for all printing processes while retaining the high print quality and productivity advantages of offset printing, with DigitalOnDemand. These new solutions coordinate offset-oriented digital printing and postpress processes. At the exhibition, we presented KOMORI OnDemand solutions

featuring the latest technologies through demonstrations. For OffsetOnDemand, we used a four-color H-UV

LITHRONE G40 that highlighted the OnDemand capabilities of offset printing by first printing on of thin paper, with immediate turnarounds for printing at the highest speed. We made our first demonstration in China for a carton job change with fully automatic plate changing, impressing those present with the makeready speed. For the six-color LITHRONE G40 with the K-DRY UV/IR coater, numerous visitors came to see high-value added print samples. We demonstrated the advanced performance of a four-color LITHRONE A37 with semi-automatic plate changing. This strategic model for the Chinese market handles light through heavy stock.

For DigitalOnDemand, we demonstrated the color matching accuracy of the K-Color Simulator by using the Impremia C80 to print overlaps on samples created with offset printing. For the Impremia IS29 inkjet digital printing system, we first demonstrated printing of 30 sheets on one side, changing to 15 sheet duplex printing with the touch of a button. We also raised commercialization expectations by broadcasting a live feed from the Tsukuba Plant.

We held demonstrations four times daily. Our booth was constantly crowded, and we secured our most orders ever from an exhibition in China.
