The biggest party in the desert!!! Fun was to be found at the 47th Annual CASI TerlinguaInternational Chili Championship and I found plenty!! Where else can you go spend a weekwith hundreds of your friends and compete in the biggest chili championship in the World, participate in two other local chili cookoffs, outlast some of the best Texas 42-domino players, cook a competition dessert with Tequila Rose, enter your float in a parade in the desert, play inthe desert horse shoe tournament, create your best drink for the Mix-Off, enter the ChiliOlympics games, be judged wearing your crazy Halloween costume, and then also compete inthe largest Buffalo Hot Wings, Beans, and Salsa contests in the Universe.

Congratulations to all the winners of the many contests during the week and to our CASIChili Champion, Brian Spencer from Champaign, IL; the first non-Texan to win the coveted

“Big Pepper” since Randy Moore in 2001, an Alabama resident at the time.I am sure that each of you that attended the 47th TICC carried home some great memories, but I would like to

quickly share some of my laughs and memories: How many chili cooks will fit inside Roland and Melissa Pate’smotorhome? The creativity of chili cooks to have a parade in the middle of the desert with thirty-two floats/entries.The VIP Flare party on Saturday night at the Five-0 camp. The pink clad, rose carrying, escorts for the Tequila RoseParty. The great local band on Wednesday night. The wet stuff falling from the Terlingua Sky. New Friends!!! Andwhat a great ending to the week’s event with the Sunday morning rainbow….a memory that will forever be etched inour minds.

A special thanks to all the volunteers that helped to make the TICC happening a success. I would like to take thisopportunity to thank all of my fellow CASI Board Members for their teamwork and contributions in the planning andhard work each day of the event. I enjoyed working with each of the board members and also want to relay mygratitude to the outgoing Directors (David Sexton, Glenda Vrba, and Ed Blair) for their service to the CASI organization.

The planning for the 2014 TICC event has already started with the Board members creating their reports of thesuccesses of the 2013 event and the challenges/improvements needed for the event next year. Each of the CASImembers can be part of this planning by sending your TICC thoughts to me at [email protected]. The Boardwill be meeting for their Winter Workshop and Board Meeting on Saturday, January 18/19, 2014 at the Irving ElksLodge. All CASI members are welcomed to attend this meeting. This meeting begins the formal review and planningfor the 48th TICC.

The Knight family wishes all our chili family the merriest of the Christmas season and the happiest of the New Yearcelebrations. See you on the chili trail, enjoying Chili, Charity, and Fun.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE ED

Hey there, hey there look aroundLook what all those volunteers can do

Forty Seven in the booksThank you to the CASI crew

What a year! I am reaching out to all the wonderful folks that came together to make thisa year to remember. As we roll toward our fiftieth year, we are still celebrating chili, charityand fun. We tried some new wrinkles to go with our old agenda and I think we hit some goodpitches. It is satisfying, albeit exhausting, to transform the desert into the CASI arena once ayear and then put it back to sleep. The crowd comes and goes in a blur of activity. You don’t

have time to stop and smell the roses until it is all over.It is now over and we turn to another chili year. CASI has had some issues this year and we will be stronger as we

move forward. I am proud to serve an organization of volunteers. The unselfish dedication of our members isunsurpassed by anything I have ever seen. We are a cult centered around a love of a hot spicy meat stew. A family thattravels the country doing a lot of great things. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the desert each year to celebrate afamily reunion.

Salud Chili Heads and best wishes for a prosperous new year! Enjoy the photos of winners and sponsors in this“Issue of Champions”.

up on stage looking out I felt very humble and honored to be in the presence ofso many great and wonderful chili cooks. After receiving the coveted trophy, having lots of pictures taken and all the well wishes, I kept waiting for someoneto pinch me to wake me up from the best dream I’ve ever had and to tell me“Oops” we made a mistake. Thankfully that has not happened.

Driving home to Champaign, Illinois from the desert was a long andpleasant one. I had plenty of time looking out my windshield to reflect on whatjust happened. I started thinking about when I first started cooking chili to thismoment now. I remember when I went to my first chili cook off in PeoriaIllinois in September of 2010. I arrived with a pot, stove, table, and a spoon, andnot a clue of what to do or what to expect. I remember being notified by thelocal health department for not having a canopy, meat thermometer, a wash/sanitizing station, food preparation gloves, and to top it off was required topurchase a $35 food handling permit. I was a bit discouraged and ready to call itquits, but we got it all worked out and I stayed to cook my first pot of TexasRed Chili and placed 5th. I was hooked!, A chili head for life from that momenton. Since that first Cookoff I have had fun meeting a lot of great folks whilecooking on the chili trail.

What I like most about this great organization of CASI is that you cantake the word “chili” completely out of the equation and then it’s truly all aboutthe people, promoting local charities, and welcoming, encouraging and mentoringnew chili cooks.

There are so many people that have impacted my life along the chili trailthat I would like to thank. First and foremost, is my loving and very supportivebride Kim. She’s not a chili cook (not hooked yet) but she shares the same

excitement about going to a chili cook off as I do. She has made hundreds oflittle needlepoint chili peppers to hand out to anyone wanting one. She’s my rockand I wouldn’t be your champion today if it weren’t for all of her loving care andsupport for CASI and me. As a teacher it is hard for her to take long vacationsduring the school year but she is planning to make the trip to Terlingua with menext year.

Next I’d like to thank my dad Bob Pulliam. He’s my best friend, and chilimentor. This guy has taught me so much about chili. I remember him making mecook two pots of chili back to back in my garage till I got it right. He wasprobably bored and just looking for something to do that day.

A very special thanks to my teammates and friends of the Rod andWheels Chili Team for all their support, the fun we have together, and fun wewill have going forward. And last but not least, a special thanks to all my chilifriends I have met along the way. I appreciate Bill and Cheryl Pierson being rightthere to welcome a fresh, new rookie cook like me and they kept encouragingme to come back.

I pray God gives me the strength and wits to represent CASI, its greatfamily of members, and its fantastic supporters to the level expected from achampion. I look forward to the upcoming year, promoting chili, all the charities, our wonderful sponsors, and having lots of fun with the whole CASI family andmy friends.

Good luck to all and keep mixin it up! Keep cooking for Chili, Charity, and Fun!

I hope you noticed the amount of sponsor participation at TICC this year.We are trying to increase the visibility of our many fine sponsors with varioustastings and sampling of their products. We could not put on our championshipwithout the underwriting of these fine folks. Sampling gives added value toTICC and the opportunity to meet and greet the representatives. This interactionis necessary for us to attract sponsors and show that we do appreciate theirhelp. We stage our event in a remote area and without representation, sponsorswould have a hard time justifying their investment. The CASI folks always havethe welcome mat out and I want to thank you sincerely for that.

We have also renewed our contract with the Sheraton Arlington Hotel forthe 2014 Great Peppers Meeting. Sponsors also play a large part in that event.Take time to reach out and thank them. Also, take note of our many Friends ofCASI. They play a huge part in the well being of our organization by furnishingthe trophies, stoves, chairs and jackets awarded at TICC. Two scholarshipswere given this year by Friends of CASI and the new administration buildingwas underwritten by their funding.

Thank you CASI and thank you sponsors for a partnership to benefit us all.

Howdy, y’all! Hope everyone got home from the 47th annual TICC safelyand uneventfully, and with no more than a pound or ten of Texas sand in yourgear.

Many thanks to everyone who helps make our week in the desert a reality. All of our wonderful sponsors, hard-working directors, and dedicated volunteersdeserve way more than a pat on the back for everything they do. We shouldalso be grateful for the spectators who fill up Krazy Flats every year. And I, forone, am immensely thankful for Connie Gooch and her crew at B&SServices, who do such a fabulous job with the plastic outhouses. We’d all bepretty miserable out there without them. Love you, Connie!

Thank you to all the showmanship teams who planned, organized, andschlepped their gear to Terlingua. Until you’ve done it, it’s hard to imagine whatit takes to go full-out for two hours in the sun and sand of the arena. Please doeverything you can to promote Showmanship at your regular cookoffs, andencourage those teams to compete at TICC.

I can’t tell you who they are – I can only praise and recognize them as agroup – but the Showmanship judges get just as hot, thirsty, and tired as theshow teams. Many of the Showmanship judges have faithfully served year afteryear, and they always do a great job. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and Ihope to see you again next year.

Last but not least, hugs and kisses to Blu and Big John Daniels. Withoutthem, I wouldn’t have a place to stay. This was our seventh year in a row tomake camp together, and it just keeps getting better. I love y’all; thanks somuch for everything you do.

Hope all of you have a peaceful and happy holiday season. Remember tohave fun, and don’t forget your funny hat!

SHOWMANSHIP MATTERS!

Keeping with the theme of honoring those who were there in the beginningof CASI, the CASI Pioneer Award Committee is honored to award thefollowing three pioneers with the 2013 CASI Pioneer Award:

Judie KingOne of the first Directors on the CASI Board was Judie King, who served

from 1979-1985. Judie’s Terlingua Tamers Chili won her many awardsincluding 1983 Mexico International Champion, 1984 Texas Ladies StateChampion, 5th Place at TICC in 1986, followed by 7th Place at TICC in 1993.

Judie was posthumously named as CASI Chilihead of the Year in 1997.She served as Ray’s right-hand woman until her untimely death in 1997.

Pat Irvine KingAnother figurehead on the 1st CASI Board, serving as Secretary, Treasurer

and Executive Director was Pat Irvine King. After Pat’s 7-year stint on theBoard was over, she remained as legal advisor to the organization.

Pat began cooking her Classic Chili Carousel in 1981 and immediatelybecame involved in the organization. She served as Classic CASI’s GreatPepper, as well as the SAP CASI Great Pepper. Pat was the Terlingua HeadJudge from 1991-1997. She was instrumental in the organization of the LadiesState Chili Championship Committee and a member of the CASI ScholarshipCommittee.

2013 PIONEER AWARDSPat was proud to have placed at TICC in 1983, followed by a 3rd place win

in 1984 and placing 9th in 1998. She was awarded the Houston Pod’s Chili Hallof Flame Award in 1988.

Pat and Ray created the Terlingua Chili History Archives & Museum Truston which she served as an Officer and Director.

Vann YorkVann York once said, “I want people to know damned little about me”,

however he did much for the CASI organization for which he should behonored. The late Ray King stated, “If it had not been for Vann York, I wouldnot have started cooking chili.” Vann was and is a large part of chili history asevidenced by all the “1st” attributed to him.

Vann was a member of the 1st CASI Board and served as Director for 7years functioning in the positions of President, Vice President and Good WillAmbassador. He was also on the CASI Board of Governors. Vann waselected as an Old 320 Alcalde.

He, along with Richard Knight, was appointed in 1978 as one of the 1stCASI Referees and served as South Texas Regional Referee from 1980-1983.

He created the “world in a chili” trophies that are awarded today at TICCand formed the SOTOL Pod serving as its 1st Great Pepper. Vann wasinducted into the Houston Pod’s Chili Hall of Flame in 1981.

When retirement came, Vann headed for Terlingua and resided there untilhis death on Christmas Day in 1997.

Bobby and I would like to thank the following people for helping with theHighway Trash Pick-up effort this year at TICC:

Big John Daniels, Blu Daniels, Sonny Fichtl, Gail Edwards, LarryWalton, Tom Dozier, T.J. Cannon, Don Stoppiro, David Trice, MarkConnor, Diane Fitzhenry, John Goforth, Dee Hay, Diane Hay-Foster,Dana Plocheck, Gene and Jean Whetstone, Cindy Noe, Bruce Stewart,Bob Alvarez, and Lee Kroencke.

We’d also like to recognize Jim Ezell and Tom Dozier for their behind thescene support. These men provided the prizes for the road crew members.

It is unfortunate that four of the prizes provided by Jim disappeared andeven after a “second look” were found to be missing. I assure you that Bobbyand I have devised a plan to ensure this will not happen next year.

We’ve come a long way. Two years ago there were only seven road crewmembers. Last year I seem to recall there were nine. This year we had 23!Let’s keep up the good work.

Cooking With CASIGreetings!

Thanks to everyone for submitting your cookoffsearly. We have seen dramatic improvement in submittinginformation timely, and as usual CASI members are risingto the occasion. December 15th is the deadline forsubmitting February cookoffs, so continue to check yourcalendars closely and connect with your promoters andreferees.

An advantage for submitting cookoffs is to have anelectronic trail of your submission. That is a very easyprocess when you submit your cookoff usingwww.casichili.net

As the chili year winds to a close I encourage you totake a look at how you can grow CASI chili in your area.Maybe all it takes is a phone call of encouragement.

Maybe reaching out and contacting someone you think would enjoy chili charity andfun. This year has been a year with plenty of change, and lots of new younger membersare attracted to CASI. We are so blessed to have them, and we are excited to have theadditional competition.

Congratulations to everyone reading this and involved in CASI cookoffs. Yourinvestment of time, enthusiasm, competitive spirit, and adventure is infectious, and Ithank you for your involvement with CASI whether you are a cook, a promoter, a judge,a volunteer, or just enjoy the company of enthusiastic chili heads. All the best to you infinding what you are looking for in CASI chili, whether it’s points, camaraderie, contribution, entertainment, education, energy, or all of the above.

See you down the chili trail,

Greetings everyone. Now that the dust has settled, laundry is done, motorhome is cleaned and we

are back to the real world, there are some people that I need to thank.First to the Board of Directors; incoming and outgoing…thank you for your

time, work and talents not only over the days we spent at the Ranch but allthrough the year….this was a great TICC.

Thursday at the Ranch was a lot of fun. I especially want to thank TimCollier and the River Runners for the Horseshoe Tournament….even aftergetting knocked out one round before the money round….EVERYONE washaving a great time. My partner was a spectator from the Flats, it was greatgetting to meet him, and we promised to look each other up next year so we canbe partners again. The spectators really got involved in the tournament and itwas a great thing to see.

To all the CASI members that participated in Le Grande Tour de Poivrethis year. THANK YOU. I was so impressed with the support, enthusiasm, andcreativity that so many of you brought to this event. And tothe CASI members that lined up along the parade route…(I promise that the route will be better next year). Specialthanks to Clyde Rogers, Doyle Smith, John

Thompson, Michael Mayorga, Don Hoy and Tim Collier for all their helpon parade day. A very special thank you to Dianna Hoy who without herpersuasive ways and copious amounts of alcohol, I wouldn’t have been able toget creative and organized. Also a special shout out to Scotty…thank you fortaking care of the judges.

To Richard Knight, Jim Ezell, Patti Meyers and the sponsors….thankyou for the generous donations and help with the prizes for the parade entrywinners.

We have already started working on next year. I have received a lot ofcomments, suggestions, and great ideas for next year and look forward to havingan even bigger and better parade.

Congrats to all the winners this year. Be safe on the chili trail and alwaysremember, chili is the excuse…charity, family and friends are the reason.

On Saturday, October 19th, the Colorado Chili Pod and the FortCollins Senior Center hosted the 23rd Annual Sundance Chili Cookoff. Thisevent, which supports the Fort Collins Senior Center, has long been one ofour region’s favorite chili cookoffs.

All of the cooks had a good time under the crystal clear blue skies.Linda Wilkinson from Loveland, Colorado was able to capture first placefollowed closely by Mary Ann Parish of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Interestinglyenough “Team Wilkinson” grabbed four of the top six places!

We all hopefully will be back next year!
