Message from the Mayor of BrightonCouncillor Mrs Christine Simpson

I take pleasure in sending this message of greeting and goodwill to all who will visitBrighton on the 8th September in order to be present, either as participants orspectators, at the Endeavour 1990 Brighton National Speed Trials.Over the past two centuries Brighton has attracted a never ending succession ofvisitors. During the eighteenth century, already established as a health resort, theancient village of Brighthelrnston was chosen by the future King George IV as thesite for his Marine residence and through his patronage the modem Brighton wasfounded. In the nineteenth century the town developed as the most popular seasideresort in the South of England and from the middle of the present century it hasbecome an international conference venue of ever increasing repute. Also, to our good fortune, the town has become the goal of a vast number of sportingactivists in walking. running, cycling or driving who set their sights on Madeira Drive.Of these popular events, none creates greater excitement than the Annual SpeedTrials. It is with great pleasure, therefore, that I send good wishes to all the participants, many of whom I look forward to meeting and congratulating on Saturday afternoon.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN 1940-1990

Fifty years ago Operation Sealion, the invasion of England bythe German Army was at an advanced stage and landingswere planned here in Sussex. However, the German HighCommand required control of the air.

It is now a matter of history that RAF Fighter Command wonthe battle that preserved our freedom.

The Chairman Tony Johnstone, and the Committee of theBrighton and Hove Motor Club together with The EndeavourMotor Company are proud to be associated with the RAFBenevolent Fund's Battle of Britain Appeal during thisanniversary year.

They are very grateful for the generous help of VictorGauntlett, David Pennell and Proteus Petroleum who haveprovided the aircraft for the air display.

BRIGHTON 1990It was with something of a shock that I realised very recently that the Speed Trials were

once again upon us, and when mentioning this fact to a friend he said "Yes, another yearnearly gone". It is for the sprint fraternity a strong reminder that the Brighton SpeedTrials over that famous half mile is almost the last blast of the season just as it has beensince 1905.

How things change over the years; in pre-war days Brighton was the venue wheremany of the land's top speed performers brought down their works machinery to testagainst the best. This year we have a return to that tradition with the entry of TrevorNation on a works Norton rotary, a machine that has done so much to assist the re-birthof the Norton marque. What will be interesting is to witness the comparison of thismachine's recognised performance as compared with the two 'Out of the Crate' 1100ccZZR Kawasakis of the Gardner brothers. These 'Street' motor cycles have a reputed topend performance in the order of 170mph-plus in a 'Restricted' form; if the Gardners haveremoved the restriction could they take on the works bike? We must wait and see.

In the Vintage and Post Vintage Classes we have two excellent examples of yearspast. One is Chris Illman's 1923 350cc Brooklands Zenith; Chris always adopts the oldBrooklands style of a white coverall and rides the Zenith in true Brooklands fashion, i.e.bottom right over the rear wheel and chin well down on the tank. The other entry is TitchAllen, founder of the Vintage M.C.C., on George Brough's personal sprint bike andsidecar "Old Bill", still with the 'sort-it-out-'tween-foot-and-hand' gear change.

Two stalwarts in Alan Morgan on his 1930 500 Rudge and Basil Keys' 1OOOccvee twinJ.A.P., still competing since his first Brighton ride back in 1933, can still provide somefireworks. The most hotly contended class is the 1000cc which should prove to be highly

entertaining, with the amateurs chasing after the works Norton. Also in this class we haveone of our two lady solo competitors in Lyn Roe who is no mean performer on herTriumph, as was recently shown with a fourth spot in a hotly contested Ultimate StreetBike run. Our other lady competitor is Jayne Glover on her very quick Low Yamaha350cc sprinter. Welcome ladies, it's great to have you with us.

As always may I thank the Brighton & Have Motor Club for extending their invitationto us for yet another year. Our thanks to all those behind the scenes who started to putthis year's event together right after last year's event had just finished - an immense task.

And finally thank you, the spectators for coming along and giving this great event yoursupport; let us hope that the weather is kind, and that we all of us enjoy the day.
